Visually stunning and intriguing world design. One of the best looking open world games of the modern era. The post-apocalyptic world design with lush green environment with oily-dirty substance and structures make for a unique sight. The presentation is a bit problematic at times, there are sometimes too many cut scenes that slows down an already slow game. Some skipable with one button, others require different buttons.

    Soundtrack & Voice Acting: 10
Music is transcendent, it's up there at the top of video game soundtrack Hall of Fame with Nier: Automata and The Last of Us. Voice acting is excellent.

    Writing & Story: 7
We're getting into controversial territory here. The main plot is unique and unlike anything I've experienced before. The story is built around original concepts only capable of coming out of the mind of a genius or a man man. The plot deserves a perfect score for creativity. Sadly, you can't talk about the story without the writing. The dialogue is questionable at times, the fourth wall breaking regularly shatters the immersion of an otherwise serious storytelling experience. The protagonist's oedipal relationship with his mother/sister/lover also is jarring and everything is too much on the nose starting from the names of the locations (Knot this, Knot that) to names of the characters (Bridges, Strand, Die-Hardman etc). There are too many eye-rolling moments to take the story seriously at times.

    Gameplay & Fun Factor: 0
This is where things get interesting. As I attempt to get the platinum trophy on hard difficulty, this has been easily one of the most frustrating gaming experiences of my life.

The core gameplay of Death Stranding is intentionally tedious, which is ironic since gameplay is the foundation and heart and soul of every video game. The constantly mandatory opening of menus interrupt the moments of auditory bliss provided by the otherworldly soundtrack. Gameplay requires a lot of precision get imprecise controls worsened by realistic physics make traversal a real nightmare. Whilst zip-lines can be fun to use, most everything isn't.

Combat mechanics aren't engaging, most of the enemies provide distraction from the real enemy of the game - the controls. Moreover the excessive slow motion slows down the cripplingly slow gameplay even further. I'd recommend playing on the Easy mode, disregard the stealth and quickly chop through the enemies to get to the good part, the story.

Overall the gameplay is intended to realistically reflect the hardships of carrying inhumane amount of weight and travelling across rough terrains. This is a textbook example of how too much realism can actually hurt a game.

    Performance & Stability: 7
Game plays like a dream. Apart from sudden loading pauses when you're zip-lining through the map (which I imagine can be fixed with an SSD) there's no frame rate drops or no crashes to talk about. Incredibly stable!

    Overall: 6.4
Death Stranding is a unique blend of intriguing and emotional story, sublime music, spectacular visuals and intentionally frustrating and tedious gameplay which makea it an inconsistent work of art that's difficult to recommend to everyone. It's cripplingly slow and takes a little too long to unlock the more engaging elements of the gameplay. One could argue that it should've been a movie or a TV show instead of a game but it's hard to argue that it's an incredible and unique experience should you suffer through the boring slog of a gameplay for 50+ hours.

Incredible game. There is some issues with cars and bikes, but that is absolutely invaluable. I played on hard and after completing story, I feel just good. Story is amazing. You see how story takes the swing and every twist is valuable. I don't know what to say. If you hadn't played it yet, you definitely should.

Death Stranding has a very ambitious story to tell but it fails with it's gameplay mechanics and fights. The story is not simple and revolves a lot on fantasy. It's good and they put real actors in it. The delivery of the story is amazing. At the base however, this is a lot a walking simulator. You get vehicles at some points, most of them are slow enough that the BT can attack you. Making deliveries gets very old, very fast. The gun/grenade fighting works with human targets, but the BTs it generates horrible fighting. The system is so slow and unprecise that the BT have a net advantage. On top of that, they attack from behind, something your character can't handle well since it takes forever to move or turn around. The music is quite good, especially like Low Roar music. I like the fact that you can share other players structures. The reward system is fun too. I give it 68%. The ending is blocked with a series of BT fights, and factually kill the game before the end. Great story but with bad enemy design and choices. Expand

Death Stranding is a kind of anti-game, taking apart what video games really are and what is their purpose. Many people call it a walking simulator and at the first glance it really is just that. The trick is that going from one point to another, figuring out the routes, making choices, building structures that will help you and others to traverse difficult terrain gave me more fun than vast majority of action-packed games ever did. Making deliveries became an addiction for me for many hours. You don't have to shoot people to have fun fighting obstacles in a game.

The other thing is the story, which is incredibly deep and moving near the end of the game. I would compare it to the best sci-fi films in history, like 2001: Space Odyssey or Interstellar. It's epic but also touching and intimate. It makes you wonder what's the meaning of life, what will happen in the future, it questions your beliefs and morality. It left me literally in tears at the end of the game and I will never forget that.

At last, the graphics and music. It's a delicious cherry on top. Almost every frame in the game could be a perfect wallpaper, it's so mesmerising. The thing I keep coming to the most is probably the music though. It's one the best soundtracks ever. Ryan Karazija, who made most of the songs in the game, is one of the biggest musical discoveries for me in the last decade.

I love this game. It has its flaws, like shallow fighting system, little bugs and glitches, but it's constantly on my mind and I can't stop thinking about it. I was never a Kojima fan, I never cared about MGS series. Buy now I'm waiting eagerly what his next creation will be.

I'm studying as a scriptwriter and i can confidently say that if this game was a movie it would be 11/10. What ruins it for many people is the gameplay aspect. Unfortunately i'm obligated to agree since that is true. Controls on ps4 feel amazing and interactions with monsters (i don't mean energy drinks) feel even more frightening because of the smooth vibrations. But vehicle controls… Don't even attempt to drive a transport on a road that has more than 1 rock on it, unless it is a transporting skateboard. The music part hits really good just in time, but i'm disappointed about a fact that you're actually not able to listen to it freely while being on your way.

U should buy this game if you support the idea that videogames are the evolution from books and movies, if you're really disappointed about The Last Of Us 2 script or if you want some really strong story.

The story in Death Stranding is everything you would expect from Kojima. Confusing, convoluted and melodramatic. The whole plot centres around your character who acts as a courier while trying to link data system up from facility to facility in order to connect people together. All this amidst a world that has been devastated by a cataclysmic event that brought ghost like entities into our realm. That's probably the easiest way to describe the plot, anything beyond that dives into insanity territory. All I can say is, whether you end up loving or hating the overall plot, you can't say it's not original.

The game-play is where this game gets a big thumbs up for me. It is a love it or hate it affair (just like the story), but if it's your bag, you'll be hooked in an instant. The game-play predominately consists of your character delivering packages from one place to the next. The challenge stems from how you get there. The multiple hazards along route, such as enemy 'MULES' trying to steal your gear, the 'BT' ghostly entities trying to stop your progress or the rainfall slowly destroying your cargo all pose a significant threat. However, I found the most enjoyable challenge was trying to navigate the terrain itself. This game does an amazing job of conveying how it feels to carry such a heavy weight over long distances (after spending 15 years in the army I can vouch). Once each order had been completed, I felt a great sense of relief over and over again. On top of all that, the game looks great and gives the overall experience an 'otherworldly' feel. Coupled with some great sound and a decent soundtrack, you have an overall atmosphere that's hard to match.

I loved my run of this game. The cast and voice acting kept me engaged, even if the story was a bit too much to swallow. But the addictive nature of the game-play itself is why I stayed. In saying that, this won't be for everyone. If travelling in game for long periods of time put you off, maybe not for you. But if you are into an immersive atmospheric experience that is completely original, give it a crack for sure.

The description "genre defying" is most definitely the most appropriate way to describe Death Stranding(DS). I can't really compare DS to any single game...it really leverages bits and pieces of so many different game genres while creating a brand new experience. Some of my friends asked me why I'd play a game where "you play a delivery man in a game that requires no skill"....and honestly...I can't disagree with their description...but I also can't agree with it either. Death Stranding (DS) is so much more than that...while also not much more than that. But I'll do my best to summarize it.

After 2020...this game was so refreshing. Where most games encourage you to constantly "destroy" and "indiscriminately kill" all that is around you, DS encourages you to do the opposite. You're encouraged to re-build the a post apocalyptic world while helping strangers...you never actually meet in game. You can tell other players exist...but you never actually see them...but you can help them and they can help you. The game rewards you for helping and connecting people with in game "likes"...but there is no way to "dislike" something. And inevitably, other players will benefit from your paths and structures. Other players will contribute to building and up keeping your structures and I'd be you will contribute to theirs.

As for game play mechanics....you are essentially a delivery man who goes on lots of hikes. And while this sounds super simple...it's anything but... You want to maximize the amount of cargo you can carry, but you also have to literally balance the cargo you choose with the supplies you need to complete the delivery. You'll need to "balance" the cargo you want to deliver with minimal damage, with the supplies you need to complete the delivery. If you take the direct route, you'll likely encounter some conflicts along the way the requires fighting supplies. But if you take a longer route, it'll be more difficult terrain that not only requires you to bring extra supplies but will require more patience to find a route where you won't fall over and damage your cargo. And along the way, "walking" will require you to manage multiple controls. Kojima was so detailed in this game design, that you have to use the left/right triggers to balance the weight on your back along with not only the terrain, but the wind and currents. It's so incredibly simple and yet so complex.

I also find it very interesting that "killing" in this game is possible, but also highly discouraged. If you kill a living being, you have to dispose of their body or risk a "void out" which essentially is a game over moment requiring you to reload from a save point. It's totally possible to accomplish a disposal...but it's also a major pain discouraging killing a living thing. I know some won't enjoy this...but I personally found it so refreshing. I never intentionally killed another player/NPC. But I did accidentally kill one NPC....that I mistook for an in game hologram by running them over with a vehicle. I was compelled to get out of the vehicle and check on the character even though time was ticking for a timed delivery. I was heart broken while I watched his NPC's partner grieve over their partner/porter's body. It was a total accident and still so emotionally impactful even though it was an accident.

As for the story, cinematics, and music.....WOW! I'm still in awe. I'm not going to claim the script was flawless...but the story was VERY WELL done. In various parts of the game, you'll have some eye rolling moments where there is quirky dialogue and you'll question why some character names are so very...cliche. But I PROMISE that if you complete the game you won't regret it. The overall story is very well told and complete by the end of the game. I can't even begin to describe how many emotional roller coasters I experienced while playing the game. I was so fortunate to have a friend who had recently finished the game that I could share my experiences with. If you can share the experience with a friend...I'd highly recommend it.

At the beginning I said this was more of an experience than a game...and I still hold to that claim. I do think you need to play the entire game to appreciate that experience. I know it's hard these days to trust a creator..but I'd highly encourage you to trust Kojima and play through the entire game. It is possible to play the entire game only focusing on the "main" missions, but I suspect you'll instinctively start to complete side missions which will help you along the way.

Overall...I can't effectively communicate how much I appreciated this game. It's absolutely fantastic!!!! As tempting as a 10/10 was...DS isn't without flaws, but no game/experience is. The music and pacing was fantastic. I wish I had more characters...so I'll end with just EXPERIENCE DEATH STRANDING!

Saying that it is a game you should give a chance if you think you’d be open to it, I gave up after 8 hours of my first play through but picked it up again over lockdown and loved it, easily my favourite game of the year and one of my favourites of all time. Gameplay can be described as a walking sim which is true to an extent. But it is more about building networks both with other players and within the world itself and planning out deliveries. Though sparse the world is beautiful to travel through and the idea is once you have made a trip a few times by foot you should have built enough infrastructure to make the trip faster each time. Gameplay and story and well interlinked and once it has you hooked it is very absorbing despite all the walking. The story and acting although not perfect and can tend to be a bit cheesy are exceptionally well done. I would go as far to say this is a masterpiece, though as said before it will not be appreciated but everyone. The soundtrack... it is best experienced within the game as it really elevates those moments but if you don’t like the game and aren’t going to finish it or aren’t even going to get it then just listen to the soundtrack as it is exceptional. It does feel that people tend to complain that most games nowadays are all the same but then when a new concept comes along it gets hated in for being different. So even if you don’t like Death Stranding I hope you can appreciate it for trying something new.

Sure the big name cast and Kojimas fetish for movies shines so bright that it’s blinding, but it’s a worthwhile experience. So much attention to detail went into the game whether it’s in needing different ways to combat enemies, modes of transportation, or even just idle animation, this game has everything that fits for its story. The game has a neat way of incentivizing you to complete orders and the online feature helps to make that happen even though my one gripe about that is it kinda leaves a mess of too much stuff not enough usability for my liking. While I would have liked Silent Hills this game is unique and has a level of polish that makes other AAA games seem a bit janky. I get people may not like this sort of style in terms of action games but it definitely does a great job in sharing its message and wrapping things nicely in the end. Also smacking people with boxes is good cathartic fun. Expand

Fantastic original game. Great characters and storyline. Good balance of action and exploration, may not be to everyone’s taste, but I thought it was a Kojima classic

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The majority of negative reviews you'll see for this game will say the same things: Slow. Boring. Not what was expected. A few hours into the game and I could see why some people were saying that. Although very definitely a Kojima game it was very definitely NOT Metal Gear Solid, or anything like it. Then again, nor was it ever trying or claiming to be.

You start the game feeling lonely, isolated, ferrying packages between a few points and trying to figure out what to do when you encounter BTs. Anyone slating the game on the basis of this feeling of isolation, I dare say has missed the entire point of the game. You're MEANT to start out isolated, you're MEANT to start out alone and it's MEANT to completely suck.

Underneath the stunning vista is a story of how the human race needs connections. The pace does pick up and the story is beautifully interwoven between your progress through cinematic sequences. You begin to sympathise with Sam Bridges aversion to human contact given his condition. Once you approach the end game there's a huge sense of achievement. Especially if you've taken the time to get all the waystations and so on up to maximum connection.

You'll get attached to BB in a way that will surprise you, making certain aspects towards the end even more emotional.

One gameplay aspect I really enjoyed is that Hideo Kojima doesn't hold your hand. It's an exploration game in more ways than one, you have to figure out menus for yourself. It's on you to figure out where the best place to concentrate your resources and buildings (spoiler: it's the snowy mountains, zip wires are a MUST).

Kojima achieved with this game what should be the holy grail in gaming, I was left completely satisfied, and yet wanting more. Troy Baker and Norman Reedus are outstanding (because of course they are) and if there's a sequel (I don't see how, but I can hope) then they HAVE to be part of it.

I loved this. Read the next review down and it's likely to be someone who hated it. Fact is, because it's a game that is designed to elicit emotional responses it really is one you have to experience yourself. No-one can tell you how you're going to enjoy this game or otherwise.

    PONTOS POSITIVOS

    - O que realmente brilhou aqui é a história, aqui temos toda a doidera de Hideo Kojima, mas que fez desse mundo algo rico com personagens memoráveis, que começa com o protagonista, e vai até parte de seus NPCs que encontramos, o enredo é rico, cheio de reviravoltas justificáveis, tudo nessa narrativa me leva a crer que Death Stranding seria um excelente série da HBO fácil fácil.

    - A mecânica social de Death Stranding é algo que realmente me surpreendeu, os elos socias das estruturas que o jogo possui, me fez, uma pessoa que odeia multiplayer, querer estar mais lincado com pessoas que jogam o game

    - Death Stranding é um jogo que tem bastante coisa para fazer, de forma errada se fala que é um jogo com missões de ir do ponto A, para o ponto B, mas o que você pode fazer para facilitar suas missões é algo que me prendeu realmente nesse Jogo;

    - Os gráficos desse jogos estão muito bem feitos, é fácil ficar preso olhando para os cenários do Título, eles tem uma beleza peculiar que faz o jogo ser relaxante, ao mesmo tempo que se percorre a sua história

    - Por ultimo, a trilha sonora do Jogo é memorável, e merece um tópico exclusivo por aqui.

    PONTOS NEGATIVOS

    - A Física de alguns veículos são completamente frustrantes em alguns casos, quase todos os equipamentos de Sam são aprimoráveis de forma a se tornarem as entregas mais fáceis durante a progressão do jogo, mas os veículos as vezes são totalmente sem resposta, alguns exemplos são um rocha mínima é capaz de fazer o veículo travar, outra é que até a ré parece que tem um delay enorme no jogo para entender que é para o veículo andar para trás, ao meu ver os aprimoramentos dos veículos poderiam incluir o aumento da tração dos mesmos, tenho certeza que não iria influenciar na proposta do jogo;

    - Sem dúvidas o jogo tem uma histórica que beira o inpecável, mas no terceiro ato do game, senti que ficou arrastado algumas partes que já davam para ser entendidas sem uma cutscene de 2 **** horas, adicional a isso a parte chata é que uma parte legal da história está em entrevistas, e eu até entendo que tem coisas que simplesmente não da para jogar diretamente na história, mas particularmente em um jogo que tem potencial para se ter mais de 100 horas de jogo, sou a favor das coisas serem mais simplificadas;

    - A mecânica de gerenciamento de carga poderia ser mais otimizada, as vezes para fazer uma ação eu tive que percorrer 3 itens do menu, acho que se a proposta do jogo gira em torno disso, poderia se encurtar as escolhas nesses menus, um exemplo disso é que não da para pegar uma carga do chão e colocar diretamente no veículo que vc está usando, vc tem que colocar na suas costas abrir o menu de cargas, e se o veículo estiver bem próximo é que se pode fazer essa transferência, no inicio nem da para reclamar, mas depois de 50 horas de jogo fica massante.

engaging and calming core gameplay loop.

Almost everything else in the game is subpar, though. The biggest offenders are the driving sections. You don't have to do anything during those sections. Nothing is happening, and nothing will ever happen. There is no threat, no rules to follow, nothing. It's repetitive, boring and I wish they just weren't part of the game.

Setting up zip-lines to skip bits of walking was a very satisfying experience, but they break the game.
I'm amazed how much the game lets you skip through zip-lines.

The story and characters were a bit of a letdown. The game has been shrouded in this air of intrigue and mystery, but it turns out that despite everything, Death Stranding is a pretty conventional game.
Please don't go in expecting any great writing or characters or anything.

I'd recommend the game if any of what I said sounds interesting to you. Keep in mind that the walking is quite repetitive, and if lots and lots of walking doesn't sound very fun, I don't think you should play it.

Kojima shows in this game all his passion for the video game and what it represents, transcending the simple concept of entertainment, creating a story not only interesting, but with deep and interesting characters.

The atmosphere in this game is like no other, and many times throughout my playthrough I found myself sort of wandering around like I was in my own Denis Villeneuve film, admiring the vast and empty landscape. Death Stranding really made me feel a lot of different emotions. Every now and then a shiver would send down my spine, whether it be in amazement or fear. No matter how strange and "Kojima-esque" the narrative got, I was still completely engaged throughout. All of the actors' outstanding performances (a special "Bravo!" for my man, Norman Reedus) were complimented by an excellent script that truly provided an unforgettable video game experience. Although the boss fights were few and far between, every single one of them was hauntingly unique (the shots of the boss in the downtown battle are *chefs kiss*). The soundtrack is one of the best I've heard in a while, adding so much emotional weight to the story. Death Stranding is truly unlike any other video game you will play.

A great work of art. Typicall Kojima game with twists and turns. It’s not a game built on action, it’s built on exploration and managing during hard circumstances.

I would give game a 0 because of the boring story and the horrible gameplay but I respect that he tried something different with this game. It’s a love or hate situation and for me, it wasn’t love.

Death Stranding is captivating and intriguing from the offset. You're thrown into a bizarre apocalyptic United States that is never too obtuse in its weirdness, but rather strange and beautiful enough to make the basic act of traversing from point A to point B an interesting and challenging task.

It's core gameplay loop of delivering items in an attempt to reconnect the country is deeper than it may initially appear, and as you progress through the game more avenues of traversal are opened up, so you'll soon be doing much more than just walking. That said, even when you are just walking it's more engaging than it sounds, and the combination of gorgeous Iceland-inspired geology and sporadic Low Roar needle drops punctuate the experience.

The story, worldbuilding and characters are top notch in Death Stranding. Despite some iffy dialogue, the narrative is enjoyable and bolstered by some great performances, in particular from Troy Baker and Mads Mikkelsen, who shine as Higgs and Cliff respectively. The cinematography in some cutscenes is frankly amazing too.

I do have some gripes with the game. Sometimes the mechanics feel a little janky, especially when climbing or colliding with terrain. The combat and boss fights weren't as strong as they could've been, and the gunplay is just so-so. Death Stranding is quite a long title and it's core gameplay loop can get repetitive after a while - getting all facilities up to a 5 star connection is quite a grind, and one that I've not seen through. After the story concludes and the credits roll, continuing to rebuild America becomes less compelling.

One little thing I wish was included in the game is a portable music player - the music featured in Death Stranding is excellent and I wish you could play it wherever you wanted, not just while resting in a private room. The sound design is spot on but having a music player may have benefited the lonelier stretches of gameplay.

Still, I think this is a great game and one that is a refreshing deviation from the norm. It exists in its own space, and it's uniqueness makes it a game well worth trying. The social features are fantastic; knowing that your contributions to the game world make an impact on other player's journeys is rewarding in a way I've not experienced before. The game's message of unity permeates through the story and all facets of the gameplay.

It's a very original, memorable title, unlike other AAA games on the market, and I'm glad I took the plunge and gave it a go. At the end of my playthrough, I can safely say that this is a game that I really enjoyed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. If someone said to me, you are going to enjoy a walking simulator with story mode a couple of years ago, I couldn't believe it. Death stranding changed my ps4 gaming experience, and general gaming experience. The story of Sam Bridges is incredible and very mysterious. At the ending of the game i just could not tell, what happened but it was just fine. I felt like Sam died but maybe he can came back as one of these ghost and, destroy all of them from all the sudden, at the end he had bad experiences with them ale since he is very kind men, I think he is able to get rid of them for everyone and make the world better. Music in this game is gorgeous, especially when you arrive at new places and the views are simply but incredible, it makes really pleasing experience. Graphics are awesome, physics are really nice. At the point you walk slower and you get tired faster walking on snow or mountain or the random trips on small rock and the way paths are made by going on them makes the game very immersive. There are so many ways of how we can delivery our packages, we can do it on foot with big shortcuts like going past a small mountain using ladders and ropes or rebuild old roads and make huge deliveries with a truck or smaller but faster with a bike. Overall, gameplay is very refreshing and graphics, music story are pure art. Definitely a must play. Expand

I think there is some content and good story telling in there but gees do you have to slog through terrible gameplay to get there! The gameplay improves massively once you have better gear and vehicles and as you get better at navigating and avoiding the particularly irritating geometry issues. Overall I look back on the game quite positively, its probably much cheaper now than at launch so not a bad time to pick it up.

    old review:

The gameplay is just tedious, so tedious and uninspired that it really lets down a stunningly beautiful game with a fantastic soundtrack. I really wish I hadn't bought this game at launch. Probably the purchase I regret most out of any PS4 game I have purchased. It is not worth more than £10 - if you're lucky enough to be reading this ( and haven't bought it yet) then just wait until the game is in the bargain bin and you might actually feel quite a bit more positive about it.

The game is absolutely not interesting. Locations look the same, npc’s movements look the same, dialogues are boring and senseless, the world is empty. All quests are super boring - go there, deliver something. Game mechanics is not anything genius, just few scripted moves. Spend more than 30 hours in game, stuck in the 3rd chapter and deleted it.

I hope other developers and developers to come make note of this. You can gamify anything. For the longest time, games have been about shooting and killing. This is includes open world games. But games can be about anything, especially open world games Death Stranding proves that.

Usually I separate the bad and the good in my user reviews. Death Stranding is such a unique entity that it is impossible to separate the bad from the good because the bad might be the good. The game begins like a slow “walking simulator”. The player character is a porter who carries goods on his back and makes his way through a barren post apocalyptic landscape while a song from a little known Icelandic group plays in the background. I can understand how gamers, including professional reviewers, would be slow to warm up to this game. My advice for new players is to keep going. Like Kojima’s Metal Gear series, Death Stranding keeps adding gameplay elements and tools for the player character to overcome obstacles. By the end, this game is as relentless as any. Basically, a game like Death Stranding is for finishers.

The premise of the game is connecting people. The player character does this by transporting goods from one location to the other. Traversing terrain is not trivial but also not impossible. You can be strategic and lay out a path with ladders and climbing ropes in the early game and larger structures in the later game. Or you can try to shove a vehicle over the rocks and through streams. Anyone familiar with the Halo series knows that you can eventually fit a vehicle into a space that it is not supposed to go. This is only a portion of the game. The other portion, if you want it to be, is kicking ass.

The game gives the player character a progressively more powerful arsenal to defeat enemies. You start by using fists to knock out humans and end by using assault rifles and rocket launchers. The game is very clear that human enemies are not to be killed. No spoilers except to say that dead bodies are difficult to deal with. That doesn’t stop the player character from ramming humans with vehicles or knocking them out with rubber bullets. You can be stealthy like Metal Gear Solid if you want to, and the multitude of options is what separates a magnificent game from a decent game.

An arsenal of weapons also becomes available to deal with ghosts, a.k.a. BTs. No spoilers here. The player confronts ghosts in the opening cutscene. You start out playing a survival horror game and finish in monster slaying game. At some point you have to realize that Death Stranding is a video game and the ghosts are NPCs that follow rules. You can rely on stealth like with humans or you can also go in guns blazing to clear an area. Preparation and strategy is all up to the player and I love it.

The real gem of this game is the connection with other players. Although you never see the other players in you game, right from the start, you will see structures built by other players. You will build a bridge and another player will use it. You will find cargo lost by other players that you can use or return to them. Some structures will be partially built by other players and finished by you. During an intense fight, an avatar of another player will toss you items to help you. I found myself growing more communal, and sending items I did not need to a shared locker instead of my private locker. I built bridges to make the game easier for new players. I was effusive with likes to other players. I would love to see more of this.

If I have any criticism of Death Stranding, its in the UI for handling inventory. After about 40 hours of play, I still have difficulty understanding when to hold the X button to go back to the menu or when hit the O button to cancel a selection. The inventory system in Death Stranding is a bit unique in that each item is a fully modeled object. You can see how the items load into the player character’s backpack. There is no magic bag of infinite volume and finite weight like Skyrim or a grid of boxes to fill like The Witcher. I merely wish there were a few tweaks to make the UI easier to understand.

All in all, Death Stranding is fully deserving of all of its game of the year awards. In many ways, it deserves better of players. Few games bust through genres and even fewer succeed. Consumers like familiar things. They want the same Call of Duty, the same actors in every movie, and the same sounding music. Every now and then, someone like Kohima comes along and gives us something different. Embrace it.

Full disclosure: I played Death Stranding on PS5. The load times were super fast like any game on PS5. Transitioning from safe houses to the open world may have been torture on the PS4. I wouldn’t know.

This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
