Beautiful level designs and well detailed terrains. Great Easter Egg homages hidden throughout the levels. The city streets looks better than even most Resident Evil or Silent Hill games.

Too bad the story is absurdly incoherent, the characters are entirely unlikable and baffling in motive, and the weapon ammo system is frustrating beyond belief. Whoever said video games need to be more realistic with how ammo is managed (clips, etc.) never played this game. Most of the consumable items (stamina refills, mental drops) are completely pointless and a waste of space in an unnecessarily strict item management system. The healing item mixing system is also baffling in how overly complicated it is. Dropping off items in the "storage box" requires you to have binoculars to read what items you are even choosing. Even switching weapons is a long, drawn out process which frustrayes the player and opens them to slow attackers. The main character hunts down military guys even though his wife was murdered by a monster. If you lost your loved one to a zombie in the Zombie Apocalypse, would you go on a tear of vengeance searching a city WITH AN AERIAL GAS CONTAMINANT wafting through the streets just to search for the specific monster which killed her, and then forget and start hunting down random military survivors? Why does the park service employ a government employee to singlehandedly watch for forest fires, lost aircrafts, etc. when he has a severe psychological disorder which constantly creates severe hallucinations? I wonder how many false sightings he called in because he forgot his meds (again)...

No characters make sense, or have personalities worth noting. The hit detection is garbage. The item management system is frustrating for no reason. The story is utter rubbish. This game absolutely wasted the level and background designers' hard work and beautiful atmosphere.

    -It's a dishonest plagiarism

-Some of the worse gameplay controls in a survival horror game, the bullets inventory is ****
-Absolutely uncharming and flat characters and enemies design and characterization
-39$ for a shiiit like this and black edition is just just terrible!
-combination of music and sfx at its worse
-some of the funniest bugs and glitches ever that few times shutdown the game too.

Controls are terrible, let's explain it simply you have to load individual bullets into each magazine before you can use the magazines. Even then if you fast reload instead of slow you lose the magazines so must pick them back up manually.

The inventory system is about as manageable as a brick, you have different tabs you can use in here but since the game isn't paused when you use it, you gotta decide when to use it. Two of the tabs are useless - map and collection of stuff. Never use those, the place isn't a maze and it's hardly worth the effort to bring up the map. Actually the third tab health is useless too, it tries to be metal gear solid 3 but you'll just be using the quick heal button. So you have one tab that you'll use out of four. Nicely done.

Be glad this team didn't do resident evil 2 remake. Yes they are small, but that's no excuse to make you pay £30 for a game barely worth £10. The dialogue is terrible, the story is forgettable and the shooting is ugh. Your character is also prone to bugging out when moving or interacting with things (hit R2 to get out of this) seriously my character got stuck in a locker before he even fired a shot.

Graphics are sub par, music forgettable and the dialogue is spoken as if they're 12 year olds doing a school play. They try to borrow so many ideas from the resident evil series, they forget what it was all about.

Don't buy, don't rent, just forget this game exists and move on.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pure garbage fire! I've just spent the last hour attempting to complete the last boss section thinking, surely past the clunky, glitchy, badly designed, awful controls I would be able to complete the section AS I'M PLAYING ON EASY! No, there's always something that glitches out and the boss kills me in one hit. The elevator video playing whilst the boss is running towards you and when the camera flashes back I'm on the floor dead is just unacceptable! The normal enemies holding onto you and sometimes pressing X does nothing so you have to watch your character slowly die for a reload because the game hasn't been properly tested! The last straw was when shot a canister dead on and knocked down the boss, ran past him then his instant death animation suddenly plays and i'm dead, AGAIN!

A truly awful way to end my dedicated perseverance due to this game having led the path of what I feel is one of the greatest genres of game, I stuck with it's clunkyness though out, yet to be totally insulted at the end just due to sheer incompetency gives this game it's well deserved ZERO out of 10! Simply AWFUL!

In my opinion there are two major issues this game has that lets its overall quality down.

    1. The guns in this game feel like toys and thus detract majorly from the game and its gameplay.

    2. Even more than the first point the reload system and interaction from the inventory is so bad.

If the devs do read these reviews (and I hope they do) PLEASE fix these two issues and I feel you would improve this game immensely.

Overall this game is a very decent game that is let down badly by the two main points mentioned above in my opinion. The game itself would be so much better if they were fixed.

Despite all of that, I really had fun playing the game and I'll probably give it a few extra playthroughs to get through everything. The story is compelling, the documents provide heaps of lore, the writing and voice acting is campy but honestly I think that adds to the charm of the game. As for Daymare 1998, the game is bad, the game has poor story telling and development, its one of the worse story telling and development i have seen in a video game. The three characters you play as are unlikeable and their facial models are pretty bad. The gameplay has some deal of competence, however due to bad performance optimization, the game suffers from serious frame drops and even input controller laggg, which simply is unacceptable. The environmental models and textures are well done, so the developers do deserve some props for that. Sound is fairly good too, though the mp5 sounds horrible when fired. Voice acting was atrocious, im not even going to get into awful dialogue. The final chapter of game really some's up how bad this game is, you face off with the final boss multiple times. The final boss AI is completely braindead and can even break entirely, causing the creature to grind to a complete halt. Glitches and clippings through doors and walls plague this game and sometimes there's weird physics, where the neck of a zombie can grow and begin to wobble in strange manner, never seen anything like this before. And the Puzzles, in particular the very first one is horrible and frustrating. Everything besides environmental design and sound is truly horrible. I don't understand why so many gamers are giving this game a pass, it was made by an Indy team of 10 people, that's more than allot of other Indi titles. Highly not recommended, 4/10. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Whoever says this game deserves a 10 out of 10 is absolutely deluded. This game deserves a 5 at most. I persevered and was always close to just snapping the disc. The game is not exactly terrible, but it's not fantastic. I understand it was made with old school survival horror fans in mind and it would have worked if they just made it a pure Resident Evil clone.

Now, I see people say the story is generic, but then with it being a zombie game, there's not really a lot of room for innovative story, so I can forgive that. I can also forgive the bad voice acting, having put up with it in past, similar games, it's not really a game killer for me, so again, I can forgive that.

What I get from this game is like it's a cross between Resident Evil, F.E.A.R and Heavy Rain, so as I stated above, it does try to stand out story and gameplay wise. But the gameplay is just bad. The aiming when on manual isn't too bad, but someone like me who is unsteady and not very accurate, I tend to use aim assist (yes, you can laugh at my lack of skills ;) ), but it doesn't work. Well, it does. And it doesn't. it locks on to an enemy, but only on the body, you can't cycle upwards to the head, nor can you auto lock on to the head and once it's locked onto the body, it's very difficult to move the crosshair up to the head without putting the gun down as it's like a magnet to the body. You waste bullets sometimes as the stumbling animation of the zombies is that long, you sometimes can't make out if the zombie is dead or just recoiling and ammo can be scarce and health items can be scarcer, I was low on health and all I had or could find was stamina replenishing items.

Oh, and the reloading can be tedious and sometimes was the reason why I died. The shotgun and magnum reload fine, but when it comes to the handgun, for some reason, you have manually reload in the inventory screen, which is kind of like a Dark Souls inventory where you can still get attacked when cycling through it for health items or ammo. When you reload it, you drop the magazine and have to pick it up again, no idea why they thought this was a good idea.

The tabs on the inventory screen are just horrible, the map is completely useless (And it's displayed in portrait mode. WTF)

The hallucinations were straight out of F.E.A.R. It's not a bad thing, but enemies you hallucinate (Which, to be fair, you have no idea which enemies are hallucinations or not) can hurt you, so you have to waste ammo on an enemy that isn't really there, rather than just fizzling out or whatever if it grabs you. I've had enemies hit me through the geography, not registering a shot to the head and during one part of the game where you are hallucinating, the character stops hallucinating and there is a big zombie stood right next to me with no warning with another one just appearing at the other side.

Melee attacking is the worst thing in the world as while you swing to pistol whip enemies, they latch onto you and drain your health. They may as well have not put melee attacking in this game. And there is a trophy which encourages you to melee attack a certain enemy, but doing so is an instant death to your character. Bit of a troll move when there is also trophy for finishing the game without dying.

Some files you pick up just have a website address on them. I assume the developers have hidden files and information on the websites they put on the in game files? I never checked anyway as I was busy playing the game. I mean, do you want people to play your game or trawl through your website, Invader Studios?

The only likeable character is Sam, only because he looks exactly like Idris Elba on the box art (And no, Idris was in no way a part of the development process of this game. I wonder if he knows) and I'm a fan of that guy. The others are just massive jerks.

It's nice to see references to things like X-Files, Die Hard, Resident Evil, IT, 2001: A Space Odyssey to name a few, but I think Invader Studios should have spent more time making the game good, than worrying about what pop culture reference to put in certain parts of the game.

Call me nitpicky and harsh, but that is how I feel about the game. The graphics are alright for a small studio, but it just seems to lack that polish. Personally, it's a not a game I'll go back to and IF they make a sequel I may check it out. In my opinion, this game will probably appeal to hardcore survival horror fans, I get heavy RE2 vibes, but just remember it's not or will it ever come close to RE2. And lastly, the game is not worth the £35 asking price. I'd say more £15-20 at a push.

    End communication.

Daymare: 1998 is a well-honed zombie experience that lacks originality but scratches the itch of those interested in the modern zombie game. It provides an alternate take on the traditional Resident Evil story, one that deals more harshly with the real-world consequences of investigating government science. Everything has a level of varnish, from environmental details to the documents that you read. Some of this must be counterbalanced with the fact that the game is a doppelganger. The well-crafted aesthetics also resemble the Resident Evil remakes, the Evil Within franchise, and countless others. Re-creation is many times easier than synthesis, allowing more time for attention to polish.

I was hoping that Daymare: 1998‘s intentionally schlocky feel and cheesy voice acting it would result in an enjoyably old-school experience that Capcom’s re-releases don’t quite nail, but the technical issues, dull action and lack of fresh ideas mean it’s never more than a pale imitation of the real thing.
