-Lost izalith an area with nice atmosphere. But the level design feels very linear and empty. Especially the enemies are very easy. And Bad of Chaos boss fight design. Very very bad. That's why I'm giving 9 points :D.

This game perfectly characterizes the sensation of adventure and the discovery in which the admiration such as "wow" are all the time coming out of the mouth, due to the incredible world and its decoration, for its incredible soundtrack, which perfectly accompanies the environments both of the bosses and of certain areas of the game and that is another positive point, their bosses, creatures which manage to impact the visual and the genius of the combat, some of them with puzzle mechanics which make the combats much more varied . The difficulty, which is what makes these titles stand out the most, is actually not so unfair, but is very fair to the player, having powerful enemies in one area but weaker in the previous one. However, despite having all these positive points, it has some negative points such as recycling some bosses and respawning these as normal enemies, however this is not so bad since you can obtain the objects of those respective bosses. And the other negative aspect is the multiplayer, despite having a very healthy community that is totally willing to help the most novice players and have fun, it is the limited availability of being able to carry out invasions or even help someone due to the little activity taking away a point in favor. Likewise, if you are looking to live an adventure full of memorable fights and a splendid community, this is your game, but you have to be patient in the first levels because you can be somewhat weak, however as you progress you can help other players who be starting and teach them to be as strong as you. I love this game i've invest so many time on X360 and PC tip for a Easy Life, Grind a LOT, except for One Boss on late game you pretty much can defeat everything with little suffering. I Recommend that you play Dark Souls 2 Scholar before this One because this first game a lot more punitive than the Sequel.

Fun gameplay and amazing level design with a great story telling and world building, although it's pretty hard to understand in first glance. Overall, the best game of the trilogy made more accessible to people that don't have PC or older consoles.

This game is one of the first games I played when I got my PS4 and one of the main reasons I bought a PS4. It is easily the most difficult Platinum Trophy I have ever earned. (To be fair, I made it harder on myself by popping all the Boss Souls in my NG cycle which led to me spending hours fighting and dying to Four Kings at NG+2 or 3.)

The story in this game requires a lot of digging and reading item descriptions (and probably some guides) but once you get it it's a great story that leaves you wanting more details. The gameplay is where this game shines. I got absolutely brutalized my first playthrough but once I got a handle on it after playing hours of Dark Souls 1-3 and Bloodborne it became some of the most satisfying gameplay I've experienced. This and Bloodborne are the two games where finally beating a boss after slamming my head against a wall for hours on end made me cry tears of victory. It's a feeling only possible in games this difficult that require practice to get down the timing and strategies needed to succeed. After getting the Platinum in this game, I've replayed it several times because it has great replayability. It is one of few games that I would liken to comfort food or watching your favorite movie. Most of the environments in this game are really well designed and visually impressive.

That being said, there are glaring flaws in this game. I take two points off this score for the Bed of Chaos boss fight alone. I have fought and defeated all but two of the boss fighting in the Souls series and Bed of Chaos is probably the worst designed fight of any of them. Capra Demon is also a slog but would be forgivable if BoC was a better fight.

I would strongly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys a challenging video game. Success requires a lot of practice and learning along the way and therefore feels all the more rewarding.

Something that irritates me though about this game was how many reviewers on YouTube would be saying don't buy this, because it doesn't improve much at all. This logic only applies to people on PC who own the original PTDE. If you're a console player or don't have the PTDE, and you want to play Dark Souls, this is the best way. Hell, even if you have the original PC release, it's still better, because it runs at a proper 60fps with no physic bugs. There's definitely a reason for it to be the only version on PC. Expand

I was expecting a remaster of a 2011 game but this remaster is genuinely awful. The controls have bad input delay and the visuals are atrocious. For a remaster, this is clearly a quick cash grab. The game itself is dated but solid. It deserved much better treatment than it received. It’s a shame that this game was treated in this regard, meanwhile Demon’s Souls remake received a full-on remake and is a masterclass. But even for a remaster, this is sub par compared to other recent remasters. The bar has been lowered with this one. It’s only good for someone that wants to play the original on a PS4/Xbone.

Dark Souls has a simple but extremely compelling story that isn't forced upon you like most other games. The characters are great as well, and each one has its own amazing personality. As for the gameplay it is the best I have ever seen. Never have I seen something so difficult yet so fair. The game is difficult, yes, but the devs want you to beat the game so as long as you keep pushing and don't go hollow you will prevail. It's this genius game design that makes the game so replayable and so incredible on the first run. For newcomers please don't use guides, and only use wikis when absolutely necessary, just throw yourself at the wall until eventually it caves in. I don't even need to talk about boss battles, obviously those are amazing. The variety in builds is extraordinary and makes the game infinitely replayable.
This game is a masterpiece and worth every gamers time and effort.

Second half of the game (after Anor Londo) sucks, the bosses in this game also suck, you're really going to sit and lie and tell people that this game has better bosses than Bloodborne or Dark Souls III? Not a chance, you fight a re-skin 3 times, and there is genuinely only two (yes, two) bosses that are truly great being Ornstein and Smough and Knight Artorias, who are undoubtably outstanding. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. my opinion on the souls franchise is somewhat bias as I have been a massive of fan of Fromsoftware's releases over the years so take that into account. And remember this is my opinion.
This game is fantastic, if you've never played it try it. And don't you dare go hollow!

    *Some Spoilers Below here*

This is one of my favorite games of all time, I think it is one of the few games I have played that come close to video game perfection.
The Kingdom of Lordran (The games setting) Is one of the most immersive environments I have ever explored in a video game, and a lot of that has to do with excellent Metroid esc level design, meaning that the whole entire world is literally connected; In Dark Souls you are able to go through almost the entirety of the game without seeing a single loading screen (Not counting dying). And this really helps build world building in a way that you really just have to experience for yourself to really understand. The world building of Dark souls also lies in the look/aesthetic of the areas you explore, which is something I don't hear people discuss a majority of the time. Lordran is a beautiful and haunting land, you go from stunning the sun bathed Anor londo. To the dark and twisted abyss of the Oolacile, the contrast of the areas you explore in is so polarizing and they somehow complement each other perfectly. And the music is absolutely stunning as well; while exploring Lordran you will hear very little or no music at all, making the moments when you hear something like the powerful choir and the grand piano of Gwyn's arena even more powerful.

And now the topic of difficulty, I don't think you need my review to know that this game is difficult and unforgiving. Everyone has heard the classic "This is the Dark souls of ___ ", as much as game journalists love to compare this game to everything that they dies once in, its really to the level that they make it out to be. However yes you will die, if it is the first time you have played one of these games, you will die a lot; however death in these games is treated much differently in this game than most, the developers are very aware of the games difficulty, many of the Npc's that you will encounter will always try to cheer you on and give you words of motivation, as when you quit and give up you go hollow.

Lastly I would like to talk about how i had given the game a 7 after all of the praise I've given the game, now I would give Dark Souls a 10, not the remaster. To put it bluntly I have never seen such little passion and effort put into remastering a classic such as this, there are such little changes it is downright laughable. The most you will be getting is a somewhat better pvp scene (at least on console) and maybe some new vines. The only changes I really noticed in my playthroughs were few quality of life changes that you could just mod in the original, and they work worse than the modded changes. Lets take the Drop amount feature, it essentially just made you be able to drop many items all at once rather than one. I have had many problems such as items just disappearing when using this feature, it also has at least 3 known duplication glitches and adds even more of a cheating problem that Fromsoft has simply neglected to even exist for the longest time. This remaster hardly even fixes many of the issues of the original had if not it has more bugs than its predecessor, which is absolutely ridiculous. The only thing that is good the has come from this remaster is that got ported to the eighth and soon to be ninth generation consoles. If you are interested in all of the problems with this remaster, I suggest a great video by Infernoplus titled "Dark Souls Remastered is Trash".

All in all Dark Souls is a fantastic and brilliant game with impressive world design, a beautiful soundtrack, Addictive combat (All be it clunky at times) and a great challenge most people I think are bound to hate and love.

It isn't a perfect game, you can easely see that the gameplay isn't polished. But about the lore and zones design maybe a 9 ( after Anor Londo the game declines, you can see that they didn't have much time). It also has some bosses that aren't very interesting. Indeed, it isn't the worst soulslike but it isn't perfect.

They could have taken the time to fix some of these Moving on to the game itself I personally didn't like some of Dark souls features. Like the huge lack of warp locations. I can't think of any reason why they had so few of these. You end up having to sometimes walk several minutes just go to a level you need to revisit after beating it already? Sometimes there is hole areas without a single warp location yet other areas there is 2. It's tedious and annoying. Especially when your previous game had a decent amount of them. A few of the levels on dark souls I'm really not a fan of and not for the difficulty. I hate when games have invisbke floors. It looks like a bug that hasn't been patched. And you get MSG's in the game anyway so you can tell where they are if someone has wrote on them. It's just a cheap way to add difficulty. And another level where it's so dark even with the brightness on the game and TV ramped up to max you still can't see anything. So you can be walking as slow as possible hit a ledge then fall. It's extremely frustrating. It's like a hooror movie with crappy cheap jump scares instead of designing something that is scary without making you jump. That takes really good design and creative thinking. From software is capable in this as when you goto Demon Souls the prison was a great map. Or even the dlc in dark souls where those ghost things are. Dark souls is no doubt a good game. With a decent variety in spells. Loads of weapons and great bosses. But certain levels were just poorly designed and lack of warping location's means allot of tedious messing around. Expand

I came to this game late, but it is truly a masterpiece. I’m so glad I decided to go back and play it, even in 2021. This game is timeless, and plays so well even many years after its creation. While some complain about the difficulty of Dark Souls, It is truly worth the effort to play and experience the game. Don’t miss it.

We raised the optimization and resolution of the picture, removed some bugs, changed the graphics of fire, but also did not change the interface (you can’t change the armor and immediately see it on a non-hero, you just need to exit the inventory and then go back in), didn’t change the 3d model of trees, she still looks stupid, etc. Another controversial point: the textures of the metal armor have been changed, I personally like the texture from the first part more. I can appreciate that many fantastic moments in future fromsoftware games came from Dark Souls but I feel that these big and impressive moments in Dark Souls don't hold up when compared to future fromsoftware games. I still recommend Dark Souls but I think it should be your introduction to Soulsborne games rather than a game to visit after playing the others. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. About the difficulty, just ignore those who say that "it is too hard". It is a senseless criticism that only proves that the person didn't understand the game. It is like complaining about The Lord of the Rings because the films or the books are too long, when that property is an essential feature of the product.

    Pros:
    - Good and deep battle system with good amount of weapons, spells and armor sets.
    - Amazing map design that still today stands as the best in the series.
    - Beautiful art that makes every area feel unique and engaging (except Lost Izalith; not that).
    - Memorable bosses and fair variety of enemies.
    - Great community.

    Cons:
    - Bad menus, especially the inventories, being these hard to organize and offering little options to sort your items.
    - Too little information. You will probably need a basic guide to understand the stats, how to upgrade weapons, etc.
    - Checkpoints far from bosses arenas. If you die (you will), get ready to walk 1 - 3 minutes back to the boss arena. For me, this is by far the worst aspect of the game and they definetly should have fixed it in the remaster. This issue is especially relevant in the DLC.
    - Some bosses and enemies are repeated in the second part of the game. Thankfully, it wasn't enough to make the game feel repetitive at all.

    I give it a 9.1/10.

    Cons
    - the lack of omnidirectional rolling is sad for a remaster
    - the dreaded Demon Ruins/Lost Izalith como still feels unfinished on every playthrough

The original Dark Souls has become an iconic entry for the series and for a good reason. The game oozes its own personality and presents you with what it is right off the bat. It has no issue punishing your bad decisions.

More than any other entry, the combat puzzle in this game is slow and methodical, rewarding careful shield blocks and taking opportunities only when allowed by the enemy. Not getting greedy is beyond important in this game.

When it comes to its world, no other game does level design like the original Dark Souls. Not even other Fromsoft games have ever recaptured the greatness that is this world. How a game released in 2011 still has yet to find an equal to this day is baffling to me.

What also helps is the attention to detail when it comes to environmental storytelling. The missing statue in Anor Londo, Havels gear alongside the occult club and the armor of Iron Tarkus beneath the rafters. The world makes so much sense it is haunting.

The one thing I wish was added with the remaster is omnidirectional rolling. I luckily played this as my first entry into the Souls franchise but I can see people coming back to this game from Dark Souls 2 and 3 and finding it super clunky thanks to it lacking this mechanic.

Overall, Dark Souls is one of the best games ever made, from top to bottom just fantastic. I am not a person to replay games often, but I have 12 playthroughs of this game behind me and I know I will go for number 13 when a fancy for a new build strikes me. What a great start to a franchise.

Expand

Rather than a remaster, it's a port. It will entertain mainly rock fans who want to have a complete collection on a new console or complete Souls novices. [Issue#287]

Dark Souls Remastered doesn't make any dramatic changes to its original release several years ago. The struggle to progress is constant, but just as every moment could be another death, it could also be a moment of great triumph and self-accomplishment. Playing at 60fps makes me wonder how I ever managed to play at half of that rate several years ago. It's a beautiful remaster, even if it isn't a complete overhaul. It's a great entry for newcomers or a great walk down memory lane for fans of its original release.

Dark Souls Remastered has aged well, despite the progress of its successors. Newcomers might fight it abrasive, but it is still worth a pickup for old fans and new alike. Here’s to a release of Demon’s Souls Remastered.
