Dark Souls Remastered is a missed opportunity to spruce up the most beloved title in the Souls series. While it was exciting to take a trip back to Lordran, it's less of a Remaster and more of a port. If you're looking for Dark Souls 1 on modern consoles, this is for you. If you're looking for a new experience out of Dark Souls 1, this may not be for you.

    Still a solid title, but

It was a massive disappointment, The graphics were barely updated, 60 fps is good but not a big enough change for me to care other than blighttown no longer being negative three fps that was good, however the game didn't change enough for me to be to interested in doing everything again it was just so over hyped and not really worth the price tag at all, it's original intended audience was newer players to the franchise whether they started on Bloodborne or DS3/DS2 and of course the veterans that wanted to experience this amazing game again, but it turned out that it was more tuned to players who are new to the series who never experienced the better gameplay and in general game compared to the others (especially Dark Souls 2) I finished this game and noticed something not sure whether it was because before I got Dark Souls Remastered it had been awhile since I played Dark Souls but common enemies seem harder to deal with now but the bosses seem so much easier, seriously I'll run down how many deaths I had to each boss (yes I counted)
Gargoyles: 2 Deaths, Quelaag: 0 deaths, Capra Demon: 0 Deaths, Taurus Demon: 0 deaths, Iron golem: 0 deaths, O&S: 2 deaths, Four Kings: 1 death, Nito: 0 deaths, BoC: 0 deaths, Seath: 1 death (not including purposeful death), Sanctuary Guardian: 0 deaths, Artorias: 2 deaths, Manus: 0 deaths, Kalameet: 1 death (not including Purposeful death), Priscilla: 0 deaths and to finish it off Gwyn: 1 death... That is my honest and hopefully well written opinion to summarise New players definitely check the game out but veterans please don't get it unless you want to I can't stop you...

I was expecting a remaster of a 2011 game but this remaster is genuinely awful. The controls have bad input delay and the visuals are atrocious. For a remaster, this is clearly a quick cash grab. The game itself is dated but solid. It deserved much better treatment than it received. It’s a shame that this game was treated in this regard, meanwhile Demon’s Souls remake received a full-on remake and is a masterclass. But even for a remaster, this is sub par compared to other recent remasters. The bar has been lowered with this one. It’s only good for someone that wants to play the original on a PS4/Xbone.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is hailed as From Softwares 'magnum opus'. It simply isn't. It's not at all on the level Bloodborne is at all. Second half of the game (after Anor Londo) sucks, the bosses in this game also suck, you're really going to sit and lie and tell people that this game has better bosses than Bloodborne or Dark Souls III? Not a chance, you fight a re-skin 3 times, and there is genuinely only two (yes, two) bosses that are truly great being Ornstein and Smough and Knight Artorias, who are undoubtably outstanding. The world/level design is truly phenomenal though and saves the game a lot. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. my opinion on the souls franchise is somewhat bias as I have been a massive of fan of Fromsoftware's releases over the years so take that into account. And remember this is my opinion.
This game is fantastic, if you've never played it try it. And don't you dare go hollow!

    *Some Spoilers Below here*

This is one of my favorite games of all time, I think it is one of the few games I have played that come close to video game perfection.
The Kingdom of Lordran (The games setting) Is one of the most immersive environments I have ever explored in a video game, and a lot of that has to do with excellent Metroid esc level design, meaning that the whole entire world is literally connected; In Dark Souls you are able to go through almost the entirety of the game without seeing a single loading screen (Not counting dying). And this really helps build world building in a way that you really just have to experience for yourself to really understand. The world building of Dark souls also lies in the look/aesthetic of the areas you explore, which is something I don't hear people discuss a majority of the time. Lordran is a beautiful and haunting land, you go from stunning the sun bathed Anor londo. To the dark and twisted abyss of the Oolacile, the contrast of the areas you explore in is so polarizing and they somehow complement each other perfectly. And the music is absolutely stunning as well; while exploring Lordran you will hear very little or no music at all, making the moments when you hear something like the powerful choir and the grand piano of Gwyn's arena even more powerful.

And now the topic of difficulty, I don't think you need my review to know that this game is difficult and unforgiving. Everyone has heard the classic "This is the Dark souls of ___ ", as much as game journalists love to compare this game to everything that they dies once in, its really to the level that they make it out to be. However yes you will die, if it is the first time you have played one of these games, you will die a lot; however death in these games is treated much differently in this game than most, the developers are very aware of the games difficulty, many of the Npc's that you will encounter will always try to cheer you on and give you words of motivation, as when you quit and give up you go hollow.

Lastly I would like to talk about how i had given the game a 7 after all of the praise I've given the game, now I would give Dark Souls a 10, not the remaster. To put it bluntly I have never seen such little passion and effort put into remastering a classic such as this, there are such little changes it is downright laughable. The most you will be getting is a somewhat better pvp scene (at least on console) and maybe some new vines. The only changes I really noticed in my playthroughs were few quality of life changes that you could just mod in the original, and they work worse than the modded changes. Lets take the Drop amount feature, it essentially just made you be able to drop many items all at once rather than one. I have had many problems such as items just disappearing when using this feature, it also has at least 3 known duplication glitches and adds even more of a cheating problem that Fromsoft has simply neglected to even exist for the longest time. This remaster hardly even fixes many of the issues of the original had if not it has more bugs than its predecessor, which is absolutely ridiculous. The only thing that is good the has come from this remaster is that got ported to the eighth and soon to be ninth generation consoles. If you are interested in all of the problems with this remaster, I suggest a great video by Infernoplus titled "Dark Souls Remastered is Trash".

All in all Dark Souls is a fantastic and brilliant game with impressive world design, a beautiful soundtrack, Addictive combat (All be it clunky at times) and a great challenge most people I think are bound to hate and love.

They could have taken the time to fix some of these Moving on to the game itself I personally didn't like some of Dark souls features. Like the huge lack of warp locations. I can't think of any reason why they had so few of these. You end up having to sometimes walk several minutes just go to a level you need to revisit after beating it already? Sometimes there is hole areas without a single warp location yet other areas there is 2. It's tedious and annoying. Especially when your previous game had a decent amount of them. A few of the levels on dark souls I'm really not a fan of and not for the difficulty. I hate when games have invisbke floors. It looks like a bug that hasn't been patched. And you get MSG's in the game anyway so you can tell where they are if someone has wrote on them. It's just a cheap way to add difficulty. And another level where it's so dark even with the brightness on the game and TV ramped up to max you still can't see anything. So you can be walking as slow as possible hit a ledge then fall. It's extremely frustrating. It's like a hooror movie with crappy cheap jump scares instead of designing something that is scary without making you jump. That takes really good design and creative thinking. From software is capable in this as when you goto Demon Souls the prison was a great map. Or even the dlc in dark souls where those ghost things are. Dark souls is no doubt a good game. With a decent variety in spells. Loads of weapons and great bosses. But certain levels were just poorly designed and lack of warping location's means allot of tedious messing around. Expand

Dark Souls Remastered doesn't make any dramatic changes to its original release several years ago. The struggle to progress is constant, but just as every moment could be another death, it could also be a moment of great triumph and self-accomplishment. Playing at 60fps makes me wonder how I ever managed to play at half of that rate several years ago. It's a beautiful remaster, even if it isn't a complete overhaul. It's a great entry for newcomers or a great walk down memory lane for fans of its original release.
