Despite enjoying all of these fantastic games, I find myself consistently crawling my juicy ass back to this one. Its lore, simplicity, and freedom are all profoundly captivating. It's an absolutely astounding game, with the only drawback being its occasional clunkiness, which I don't care for since the game is just that good. Expand

I love this game i've invest so many time on X360 and PC tip for a Easy Life, Grind a LOT, except for One Boss on late game you pretty much can defeat everything with little suffering. I Recommend that you play Dark Souls 2 Scholar before this One because this first game a lot more punitive than the Sequel.

Those small bugs and clunky mechanics are the definition of a game of its age. I think a remake is a must for this masterpiece. The world is the best in the souls series by my opinion. It's connected in a way where you can just explore to your hearts content and unlock shortcuts that can get you anywhere. You get fast travel later on in the game because the game wants you to taste the interconnected world. The combat is good but definitely not better than the sequels, because although it's slow and methodic, it can get very annoying sometimes based on the build you are. Of course, with a strength poise build, this game is way easier. Poise is a mechanic where you don't get staggered when being hit by enemies, so some enemies with combos give you way less trouble like Gwyn or Artorias. Generally, this game is a masterpiece but I truly would like a remake with fixed hitboxes and combat. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Cons
    - the lack of omnidirectional rolling is sad for a remaster
    - the dreaded Demon Ruins/Lost Izalith como still feels unfinished on every playthrough

The original Dark Souls has become an iconic entry for the series and for a good reason. The game oozes its own personality and presents you with what it is right off the bat. It has no issue punishing your bad decisions.

More than any other entry, the combat puzzle in this game is slow and methodical, rewarding careful shield blocks and taking opportunities only when allowed by the enemy. Not getting greedy is beyond important in this game.

When it comes to its world, no other game does level design like the original Dark Souls. Not even other Fromsoft games have ever recaptured the greatness that is this world. How a game released in 2011 still has yet to find an equal to this day is baffling to me.

What also helps is the attention to detail when it comes to environmental storytelling. The missing statue in Anor Londo, Havels gear alongside the occult club and the armor of Iron Tarkus beneath the rafters. The world makes so much sense it is haunting.

The one thing I wish was added with the remaster is omnidirectional rolling. I luckily played this as my first entry into the Souls franchise but I can see people coming back to this game from Dark Souls 2 and 3 and finding it super clunky thanks to it lacking this mechanic.

Overall, Dark Souls is one of the best games ever made, from top to bottom just fantastic. I am not a person to replay games often, but I have 12 playthroughs of this game behind me and I know I will go for number 13 when a fancy for a new build strikes me. What a great start to a franchise.

Dark Souls Remastered doesn't make any dramatic changes to its original release several years ago. The struggle to progress is constant, but just as every moment could be another death, it could also be a moment of great triumph and self-accomplishment. Playing at 60fps makes me wonder how I ever managed to play at half of that rate several years ago. It's a beautiful remaster, even if it isn't a complete overhaul. It's a great entry for newcomers or a great walk down memory lane for fans of its original release.
