CrossCode is an ambitious title, has a strong style that fans of this type of RPG will appreciate, and the combat is great. Unfortunately, the lack of a compelling narrative and loads of filler made it an experience that didn’t convince me to play to the end.

There is a lot to love in this indie RPG, with a wonderful level of detail. It’s just a shame that it has only the bare bones of a plot, and some MMO tropes that should have been cut.

I think what it comes down to is how much you need a strong narrative framework to guide you through a game. CrossCode asks for a rather large time commitment -- over 40 hours in my case -- and if you’re expecting a compelling plot to keep you glued to it, you may never find it. On the other hand, if you can push all that story into the background and focus on the sheer thrill of the game’s combat and the challenge of its puzzles, it has a lot more going for it. CrossCode puts its mechanics to good use in inventive ways, and at times, I found it to be legitimately impressive. However, without the beating heart of a convincing narrative, you may find yourself logging out too soon.

Like Owlboy and Iconoclasts before it, CrossCode is the latest in a long line of longer-gestating labors of love that emerge with varying degrees of cohesion. The best thing that can be said about CrossCode is it doesn't feel at all dated or clunky on the other end of a prolonged development time. The biggest knock against it is that CrossCode can and often does wind up feeling both bloated and inspired simultaneously.

There's only so much of theThe game has a great concept, and the story is fascinating, but I quit and uninstalled it midway through. There's only so much of the designers' "difficulty equals slightly bigger rooms and more annoying enemies" style of challenges. The puzzles are often inspired, and most of the characters are at least interesting, but I simply could not justify the annoyance and frustration of another room asking me to now kill 37 of the enemies I just fought in the prior room, albeit in fewer numbers. The combat isn't fun or dynamic enough to keep me playing within the context of these design choices. Full Review »

    Pros:
    + Controls are incredibly smooth
    + Great combat gameplay
+ Pretty good RPG mechanics (skill trees, gear with stats, trading, loot, leveling system and more)
+ A game with smart puzzles, finally!
    + Beautiful 2D retro graphics
    + Lovely soundtrack
+ Well designed world, full of life
    + Intriguing story with twists
+ Plenty of things to do and secret to discover
+ 50 hours to reach the end, a lot more for the 100% completion!
+ Challenging overall (but combat and/or puzzle difficulty can be tweaked)
    + Solid 60 frame-per-second on PS4 PRO
+ One of the very best 2D action RPG ever made!

    Cons:
    - Auto-jumping mechanic can be tricky to master
    - Not always simple to figure out the different cliff heights while jumping
    - The map doesn't show precisely where your character is

Saw this wasn't getting a whole lot of reviews, wanted to drop my two cents. I played it on PC a while ago and absolutely loved it. ItSaw this wasn't getting a whole lot of reviews, wanted to drop my two cents. I played it on PC a while ago and absolutely loved it. It surpassed my expectations in nearly every way from gameplay to the RPG system, to the story. If you're into retro-style action RPGs, Zelda-likes, Ys games, Alundra, etc. Whatever you're playing right now, finish it and pick this one up. It's got pretty much everything you need and more.
