This game looks bad for a Toys For Bob Standars, plese Activision don't let they touch another sequel for an old game.
    The controls are bad
levels are not hard they're more troll
the story feels weak and the characters personality turn into a political movement.

The game doesn't feel like a true sequel I'm very disappointed.

They waste a lot of money paying "influencers" and in publicity to hide a not so good gane

The levels and game itself seem pretty fun but when you throw in completionist stuff like the box gems (which are now more annoying than ever because there are stupidly hidden boxes everywhere), collecting wumpa fruit gems, dying less than 3 times each level gem, the hidden gem on every level, having to get platinum relics on every level, doing all of that on the “inverted style” level for every level AND the worst thing I’ve ever heard in my entire life with the N Sanely Perfect relics where you have to beat every level without dying WHILE collecting every single box........ you have a game that I absolutely despise. And it’s crazy how simple it would’ve been to make me love it. Throw out the stupid inverted levels, make relic requirements to only need gold or even just regular relic, and get rid of the n sanely perfect relics and you have yourself an amazing game I would’ve recommended to anyone and everyone. But stay away from this game unless you enjoy suffering. And this is coming from someone that 100% completed Super Meat Boy. Expand

I went through the Crash Trilo on platinum and didn't have nearly as many problems with it as with the game, even though I only played through ...
If ever a 5 part should come then for god's sake it shouldn't be like the 4 part.
Character or graphic design is also unfortunately not nice. Why didn't you take over the graphics engine from the Trilo 1: 1? Especially the jumping behavior and the physics are much more pleasant than in the 4 part.
The graphics are also worse than in the Trilo but you have 60 fps which is great.
That's what I missed with the Trilo.
Therefore, a request from a crash fan makes the next game less difficult! The graphic design is also better like the Trilo. Better to bring in the adult humor. See Little Tiger, what relates to his penis and much, much more!
The original Crash was also designed for older people and didn't have a toddler look. The funny and extreme dying animations are missing and have also made crash!
Just like his super hot girlfriend!

The look of the game was clearly designed for younger children. Then why do you make it so bloody hard? Do you want the children to be frustrated or even so angry that they break the controller?
As an adult I can hardly stand it. how are children supposed to survive this without freaking out? Or are today's children all such pro gamers and manage a game like this 100% without any major help or problems? Would be new to me.
Somehow a contradiction and I wonder if the developers even knew for whom they were really making the game.
Should it pick up the old fans? then i ask you why did you change the look and the type of crash so that it has little to do with the old games?
Should it appeal to new customers and children? then i ask the developers why is it so damn difficult and scare off new customers?

This game is so ridiculous in a way that it caters ONLY to the hardcore gamers. Crash 1 was legit hard but average players can still beat it and have fun. The difficulty of this game consists mostly of 2 things: The length of the maps and the camera angle behind Crash which is so zoomed out that its hard to control where he will land, thats why they added the location marker under Crash which i thought was a decent fix but poor design nonetheless.

Best Crash games have Crash zoomed in more (just like some of the maps in this game like Nitro Processed which is actually one of the few maps that i liked).
The length of the maps are so ridiculous because its EVERY map and they are so tedious that each hindrance is just repeated again and again. It feels so lazy, uninspired and uncreative, because most maps actually have 1-2 good ideas that the whole map consists of.
ND did this sometimes like in Crash 1 but it was mostly the 2 stages of going over the bridge which were relatively short because they were so brutal.
Here its every map and they are so ridiculously tedious.

The audio for this game is very boring, best songs are poor remixes of the masterpieces from ND.
The only reason i give it a 2 is because of good graphics and cutscenes. I thought they were the best part about this game and i liked how Dingodile was expanded and become a retired good guy. Kinda like Crash Bash.

Anyway i regret purchasing this game on sale because i've already uninstalled after beating the game because i just dont wanna go through those maps again. I liked that they added content and more characters but alot of it is just lazy (like reverted diamonds and different colors for bosses) or super hard like finding all the stupidly well hidden boxes while not dying - Just isnt fun at all.

I had a miserable time beating this game because i dreaded every single level where Crash never got to breath or slide or anything. Every map is clustered with endless hindrances every step and thats just not Crash and never has been. The masks were remaked from Wrath but i consider that game vastly superior. Its the true 4.
I've never been this critical of a Crash game and i played Titans which were terrible but i new that at time and i wasnt hyped for those releases.

However there's a lot to this game that make me wonder "did they even play the originals?" Now, I've completed Crash 1-3 including all gems and plat relics, I don't consider myself a top Crash player so I feel like I'm pretty good, right? Well apparently not considering how annoying trying to collect everything in this game; so many boxes in every level that are hidden so well you need a guide to find them, enemies with bad hitboxes, long levels that take an eternity to finish which makes collecting to gems you can only get without dying more than 3 times harder to get, repeated levels and overall less creative level designs, the list goes on. What I'm getting at is that all these things add up and make it so you're replaying levels over and over again trying to 100% them until deaths start feeling more and more cheap, gems stop feeling like rewards and more like blood drying in your hair after hours of banging your head against a wall, and lastly, the game starts to feel boring. I hate that I even feel like this because even in crash 1 when I was going for platinum relics and having a hard time I still felt challenged and engaged; with this game I feel like it expects nearly impossible things of me at times and so I have to spend a bunch of time practicing a certain section or running through the level 5 times looking for 1 off screen crate. I wanted to love this game, but my favorite part of Crash games is the completion stuff and this game honestly stinks at it. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Words cannot describe my hatred for this game!!!! Back in 2020 me and my brothers got this game for Christmas but trust me I wish we NEVER bought this piece of **** game. My complains for this ****fest are endless but lets start with the basics. The 100% completion is absurdly unfair featuring extremely difficult and unfair levels(and bonus stages are just as unfair with some of the worst bonus themes in the series history) the ending is the biggest slap to the face since the 100% ending of Mario sunshine(which is a much better game by far) the 3 deaths gem is the worst in crash history, the bosses are lame, the box placement makes me want to rip my neck off. LIKE SERIOUSY!! I can't count the number of times that I missed 1 or 2 boxes in a level to save my life. I swear to Christ! The flashback tapes make me angry and the death animations look like they came out of resident evil. ESPECIALLY THAT BLOODY SCREAM FROM COCO. Even crash himself is telling me "please don't make me go back through this torture again I BEG OF YOU!" every time I want to restart a level. I personally don't blame him. considering the number of times he will most likely die in a level. anyone who likes this game is either blinded by nostalgia or just plain stupid. Play the n sane trilogy instead. It is a million times better than this sorry excuse of a game. That's not all though because there are the Inverted levels or as I like to call them the same level painted differently. And those dammed PERFECTION RELICS!!!!! **** the perfection relics and **** the person who made them. They are without a shadow of a doubt the absolute WORST collectibles in the series history (even worse than the crash 1 gems by X10000000) I swear to Christ Almighty these will ruin your soul by the time you are done with them. Even the relic system sucks! instead of collecting standard gold relics and calling it a day like in every mainline crash game ever, you have to collect the platinum relics instead!! this wouldn't be so bad if not for the fact that you are given the worst time trial relics powerups in crash history:the triple spin. Or as i like to call it... sonic heroes bonus stage simulator. Just like the sonic heroes bonus stages your thumb will be dead by the time that you are done. Please wise up. Play the N sane trilogy and never and I insist NEVER PLAY this **** of a game!!!!! Expand

Don't waste your time trying to 100% this game. Just play it normally without worrying about collecting all the boxes or gems. The gameplay is fine I guess. Some parts can get frustratingly insensitive. For a basic platformer it is ok. Also don't expect anything from the story or characters, it is very basic and cliche; I'd say skip everything and jump to the gameplay.

I'm a completionist and this game is too hard all the time. When i finished my initial playthrough and saw some of the levels i would have to get all boxes on i didn't want to. The vehicles handle horribly, especially the polar bear and part of it might be its' tiny hitbox to get all boxes.
I tried going through the game without walkthrough and everytime i see one or two boxes missing my initial excitements turns a little sourer. Was it really necessary to hide one or two boxes so well? It's not fun.
Overall, i would say that if you want to go through casually, it's an amazing experience. If you're a completionist then you better have a patience of a saint and be godlike at the game or you're going to suffer.

You have to be impossibly precise to not die.
The second pain point is level length and box placement. The game is not designed with smart, fun puzzles like the trilogy. It uses cheap camera tricks in levels with 300-500 **** boxes. Playing through this game has led to some mixed impressions on my part. Let me start off by saying that the "E 10+" rating is somewhat deceptive. While I'm only an average Crash player this game is pretty difficult even for someone like me who has played Crash since Warped. At one point Dingodile says the word "bastards". That made me chuckle for awhile. I just wanted to include those two things for any parents of young children who are reading this review. The game might not necessarily be a good introduction to Crash for them. Anyways on to the main review.

    1) Plot - Yeah it's a Crash game. Stop Cortex from taking over the universe yada yada yada. You know the drill at this point. I love Crash games but let's face it - If you want a game with a plot you're playing the wrong series. And that's fine because Crash is about fun and has always had a loose plot.

    2) Graphics/playable characters - Very good and immersive graphics. The prehistoric levels are probably my favorite in this game and in my view some of the best in the series. The redesign of Crash and Tawna annoyed me a bit but it's nothing too major in my view. Overall beautiful graphics and fun to look at. You get to play as Crash, Coco, Dingodile, Tawna and even Cortex which is enjoyable.

    3) Soundtrack - Not a lot to say here. Pretty average honestly. The N-Gin fight and a couple of others are memorable enough. But mostly just average or forgettable.

    4) Difficulty - Oh boy here we go. This is going to take awhile. A game like Crash 1 is a good measuring stick as it's difficult but fair. Crash 2 is easier but not too easy and probably the best difficulty in the series in my opinion. Crash 3 (Warped) is my favorite Crash game but it is definitely the easiest of the three originals. I like challenge in my games but Crash 4 is over the top difficult just to complete the story. The later levels, especially Cortex's Castle, are not enjoyable in the difficulty. The levels are too long and have too many boxes that are hidden in dumb places. That's okay occasionally but not all the time and should be reserved for hidden gems. It honestly feels like some of the levels were designed by fans to make the game as frustrating as possible rather than by professional developers. I have no desire to go back and try for 105% (or whatever percent it is) with this game. In comparison the original games and the N-Sane trilogy make me want to go back for more.

4a) Difficulty - Adding to that, the game includes a death counter instead of the traditional lives system. (This can be switched back and forth) The reason for the death counter is because you WILL die. And die a lot. The fact that the death counter is even included is a red flag for me as it seems the game is difficult just for the sake of being difficult. The maps seem crowded for the sake of being crowded a lot of the time. Crash 1 is somewhat difficult but the difficulty is fair. It seems like Toys for Bob took the whole "dark souls" comparison to heart and made this game as hard as they could. To me that's just not all that enjoyable. The game is still fun at times but too often it's just frustrating in ways that not even Crash 1 can compare. Crash 1's difficulty is challenging but does not take away from the fun of the game for me. Crash 4 does take away some of the fun. Crash 4 is still a decent game and I don't wish to bash it. But with the difficulty, some of the level designs and overall frustration it is not as good as it could be.

    5) Mechanics - Some flaws here as well. The mask powers are interesting, but they are frustrating and clunky at times. (Gravity and Spinning masks) The spinning mask has no reason to exist anyways. Why was this even included when we could have just kept the double jump followed by the death tornado spin (now removed) to clear long jumps? In this instance the old system was much better and less tedious. Also the parts of the game where you climb on the sides of walls is incredibly clunky and frustrating. I don't know how many deaths I had falling off the walls that shouldn't have been deaths. It was a lot. The Crash Dash mechanic was also removed in favor of fast spinning. Why? I don't know. Some of the platforming is also quite tedious when it doesn't need to be.

    6) Humor - Crash games generally have some humor. This one is no different. Even being older now some of the jokes made me smile. It's nice to have a game with humor that both kids and adults can enjoy.

TLDR Conclusion - A sometimes fun game that is weighed down by its frustrating difficulty and mechanics. I would only recommend it for long time Crash fans. If you're new to the franchise just play the N-Sane trilogy instead. You'll be happy you did.

The game is good but too many mechanics are awful. Finishing the levels without dying, and also having to take all the crates is sometimes really impossible. The crates are often too many and too hidden, reaching the end of the level with 599 crates out of 600 and missing one that was off the screen is unnerving

I love the Crash series and this started good too but I almost hate the game to the end due to the track design. The boss battles were great as usual, but f.e. in the last stage before the last boss I died 91 times. In the last 3 dimensions my average death rate was 25-30 times, I was very very frustrating. The mask design is epic but to the end it was too much for me.

The story and plot are forgettably formulaic, with a general decrease in intelligence to all characters, with dialogue that is either cringey or uninteresting with very rare chuckleworthy lines scattered here and there... The music is surprisingly good, generally because it uses the og soundtrack as a base for remixed versions. The Crash formula is fun, but the attempts to make the game "new" only serve to make it worse, and interrupt otherwise good but dated gameplay. Some times fun, very pretty, but mostly annoying. The story could have been better but I wouldn't say it's lacking when taking the original trilogy into consideration. Crash was never known for it's amazing storytelling but rather its difficult yet fun gameplay which this game does wonderfully. It's also one of the few games I can think of with a skin system that doesn't have any **** microtransactions tacked on (and from how it looks, would be hard to add on later like they did for the CTR remake)

With all that being said, if you've played the original trilogy and have been looking for a new game to scratch that itch, this game will do just that. For anyone new to the series, I would say this is a competent game on its own (Though I would recommend playing the original trilogy first to see if you'd like the kind of gameplay Crash has to offer)

But this game in my opinion is a live child of crash twinsanity and crash1. In the adventure you have crash's moveset from twinsanity without the long jump but the game often times feels like Toys for Bob was given the trilogy and player through crash1 and only gone and skimmed crash2 and 3. With their new mechanics like grindingits a double edge sword as it's a good way to keep levels inter connected but with how the lighting system works where especially in booty calls where the blind spot for you is in front of you as you wouldn't know where is and when you're suppose to jump. It feels cheap because how it just pubish you not knowing what's next especially when it wants you to be on your toes. This game isn't Darksouls but this game feels like it with how crash controls.
With design of levels hits an awkward situation. As level design is densely better than wrath of context it feel off as well having boxes being out of view and have search for it be more prevalent. The issue is when the game ask you how crash controls between going in and out of 2d and 3d section. 2d section feel like you're in a beat on up level as you still control him up and down it gives a simple jump on a box a mannerism just by how you set crash up for it. This kind of design can work if it made can make obstacles more easy to read. You look into the second world where the game shows how fore is going to be the big obstacle in this but since it blends so easy to the background where it feels like a sucker punch to your face if you're not ready for it.
But with those set backs I still think the game is still god but feel like it needed to do is look back why people liked crash series in the first place. It was crash having tight controls where you were to blame if you lost a life. Overall how thoes grind sections work it feels like a mobile game with how cheap it can be. But with those blemishes it dose give up the sequel crash3 truly deserve with bringing tawna (TFB knows what they did z:]) and making the stakes bigger to make a game we don't forget from the series

There have been complaints of how secretive many of the crates are, and the lack of handholding, but for those who grew up in the NES era, where games didn’t apologize for being tough as nails, this will be a refreshing challenge in a sea of watered down mediocrity. One of the best gaming experiences I’ve ever had. Also, heads up. Take your time exploring the levels before trying to get all the crates. Lots of tricky hidden ones.

After all, while that game, along with the “Crash Bandicoot N. Little did I think that just about a year later, they’d come forward and announce the next game, fittingly titled “Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time!,” and let me just say, you’re damn right it is. The second entry in the series to bear the “Crash Bandicoot 4” name in some way (after 2001’s “Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex”), this game caught my eye as soon as the previews came out, and it was one I was very much looking forward to. And let me tell you, it’s every bit as glorious as I hoped it would be.
“Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time!” brings back the classic “Crash” gameplay, and does a marvelous job of translating it to a new generation. Crash’s movement feels fluid, the platforming elements are strong as usual, and this game certainly brings the challenge. Believe me when I say, no matter whether you go for everything in the game or not, this game is going to kick your ass in more ways than one. Fortunately, though, the challenge is welcome, and even if the game gets difficult, it’s not an unfair type of difficult: it’s a test, sure, but the challenge feels smart and the level design is so brilliant, you’ll feel rewarded when you get through the levels. The game also features plenty of new content to keep things fresh, chief among them being the new masks. These masks bring new powers to Crash that allows for great new ways of platforming, and they also help the creators get even more creative and exciting with the level design. Furthermore, the addition of new types of levels, like N. Verted levels and Flashback levels are great, as are the numerous gameplay styles brought to the forefront with new playable characters, like Tawna, Dingodile, and even Neo Cortex himself. All of these characters have their own charm to them, and are an absolute blast to play. Visually, the game is beautifully designed, the environments are wonderful to look at, and the game is bursting out of the screen with colors. Beyond how wild the gameplay goes, the visual design is equally as inventive. And while the story may not be the main focus of “Crash” games, I enjoy this game’s many callbacks to Crash’s previous adventures, and I think the characters and dialogue are charming and hilarious.
I honestly can’t think of any negatives about the game that really detract from my enjoyment of it. Yes, the game is extremely challenging, but as I mentioned, it’s a welcoming challenge. It’s not packed with “fake difficulty,” it’s a game that’s smartly crafted and, as difficult as it can get, it feels rewarding when you do a great job.
Overall, “Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time!” is everything that I hoped it would be, and it’s exactly what “The Wrath of Cortex” should’ve been almost two decades ago. It’s the finest “Crash Bandicoot” game that I’ve played since “Crash Bandicoot: Warped!,” and it establishes that Crash is back and better than ever. It’s a beautiful, faithful, unforgettable adventure for the orange marsupial, and it makes me happy to see how excellent of a job Toys For Bob did with this game. It’s truly amazing, and beyond being one of the best games I’ve played this year, it’s far and away one of the best entries in this great series. I can’t wait to see where the series goes from here. Also, hey, Activision, so I’m thankful you answered my request for a new “Crash” game from the “Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled” review, and if you don’t mind, I have just one more plea for you guys. I don’t want to ask for too much, so I’ll make it quick, but…can “Spyro” be next?
Final rating: 10 out of 10 “Fantastic”

Crash Bandicoot 4 is almost everything I could want from a sequel to to a beloved childhood game. Must have been hard to fill the shoes of Naughty Dog, but I think Toys for Bob have pulled something truly spectacular.

    Intro

Crash Bandicoot 4 sets out to reestablish the old style of Crash games while throwing out the past 21 years of subpar attempts made by other studios after the original 3 games launched. Toys for Bob, the developers behind 2018’s Spyro: Reignited Trilogy and 2011’s Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure, try their hand at continuing Crash’s legacy in a way that feels like no other game came after the 3rd installment until now. Building off Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy was a must here but since that was made by Vicarious Visions, I was a bit worried that this game might falter in a few areas, and unfortunately it does.

    Story/World Building – 3/3

If there is one area that this game excels in, it’s the amazing cartoony cut scenes. A fun story with great voice acting and entertaining visuals. Voice acting withing levels can get a bit grating if you have to repeat a level over and over but VA audio can be muted for such an occasion. For a more casual playthrough, the story makes the game all the more special even though you need to 100% the game to see every scene within the game. The story is not the primary focus but the cartoony nature of this game lends its way to an overall fun experience.

    Gameplay – 3/4

Toys for Bob make this platformer worth the full 60 dollar price tag due to the amount of content within the game. Regular levels can be replayed inverted, special optional levels with different characters, videotapes to collect, and play through. So much replay value is bundled with this game that it will easily take you 50+ hours to 106% the game and see everything. This does lead to an issue where levels can feel a bit overstuffed. Special character sections can lead to some frustration like Tawna grappling hook not locking on to an object properly or Neo Cortex missing a platform due to weird hover physics. Crash plays like his normal self, just like in the original 3 games so no complaint about him. I love that this game has high replayability but levels that have boxes that are way too hidden or have too high of difficulty spikes to 100% clear can be annoying. N. Sane Trilogy had a pretty fair balance between fun and difficultly minus a few levels but Crash 4 is easily the hard game in the series, almost to an unfair degree in the later levels. It’s still a fun Crash game but most will have a struggle getting to 106% completion due to buggy special characters and high difficulty spikes.

    Technical – 2/3

This game can be buggy at times like the aforementioned grappling hook but works most of the time when playing as Crash. The cartoony style is fully realized and makes this game look beautiful. Framerates can be an issue with some levels dropping it to as low as 20 FPS and inverted levels shooting up to 60 FPS due to minimal style filters applied to these levels. Music through is serviceable but nothing that reaches the heights of the first 3 games. Nothing too game-breaking but issues arise here and there.

    Verdict

Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time is a great first attempt for Toys for Bob. They almost stick the landing with great visuals, a fun story, and serviceable gameplay that almost reaches the heights of the originals. Difficult spikes and a few character glitches can be annoying and lead to some frustrating moments but if you’re willing to power through that, there is a lot of fun to be had.

Crash 4 looks absolutely stunning and every environment looks new and distinct from the others and will show set pieces that will have you in disbelief that this is a crash game. In the level offbeat many easter eggs and such can be seen on the rooftops and in the background, rewarding players with a keen eye.

This game does come with a small handful of negatives such as the framerate chugging a bit on a base PS4, and some crates being almost impossible to find unless you spin every nook and cranny of the level or give up and google it.

But other than that, this is personally the best platformer I have played within the past decade.

The first major complaint I have is the controls, they're not smooth at all, one slight move and it's a full commitment. If there's any game in this series I'd like every Crash game to aspire to, it'd be Crash Bandicoot 3 Warped (NOT the remake - the actual game on PS1.) Playing during those rail gliding parts in missions or Tawna levels can be fun at times but most of it (especially if you're trying to 100% the game) is ridiculously hard. There's a difference between difficult level design and trolling. My next major issue is the redesigns. I feel like instead of sticking to what could have been a direct continuation of the game from Warped, they've gone with this late 2000's punk/early 2010's 3D Nickelodeon animated design rather than a classic look. I appreciate the efforts in making characters like Tawna more active and relevant to the game/story (as shown by the trailers) but to make her design to be a more Mad Max style of a look doesn't feel like crash. It reminds me of how the audience looked at Crash Bandicoot characters after the Twinsanity/Tag Team Racing games. Overall to summarize, I'm going to simply say the gameplay could be a lot more fluid and have a more free like feeling as well as the redesigns not looking to well but it's nice to at least see an effort by Activision to reboot the series but at the same time continue on from Warped. Since the ps3 era, I've been hoping to see a new Crash game but was a little let down at this one. Fortunately seeing what Naughty Dog did to The Last of Us franchise, I'm glad it's no longer in their hands but I think Vicarious Visions should have been the one to create a new game/story instead of Toys for Bob Expand

Awesome game! Definitely the most true to the trilogy since the trilogy itself. It's much closer in gameplay to crash 1 and 2 than 3 though, which isn't a bad thing.

I'd probably give it a 10 if not for two things: 1. Hit boxes on crates during vehicle segments feel absurdly small. There are times where you hit a group of 4 head on and just straight up miss two or three. 2. Like 70% of

Best Crash game yet. A big step up technically. Although linear in design it suits perfectly the game style . 60fps on Pro. Silky movement. Variety. Lots of levels..great audio and solid gameplay. Far out performed my expectations. Gameplay nods towards Donkey Kong Country.

The bad things are the loading times, it takes forever to play a level, the games has a lot of fat like the N.Verted mode that doesn't add anything interesting, it's just a palet swap and mirror mode.
They should have made exclusive levels for the side characters and don't remix versions of Crash and Coco levels.

Flashback tapes where you need to stay alive until a certain part of the level to get it? Pfft!

Almost every level requires a youtube tutorial to be able to find all of the boxes and hidden gems. The bonus levels are so convoluted that some of them require going back and forth over the level multiple times, dying 40+ times to try and succeed. The precision required all the time is ridiculous. The game looks great, and the new addition of the quantum masks and playing as other characters is great, but this game is too much about frustration and anger than challenging and fun.

Crash Bandicoot 4 is a worthy addition to the Crash legacy. It captures the spirit, fun, and challenge of the original games, and adds a lot more that genuinely makes the experience even better rather than simply padding out the gameplay. The game is certainly challenging and the levels could probably use a few more checkpoints, but the number in the game is truer to the spirit of the originals than modern gaming standards. A little perseverance will get you through the game, but it’s going to take a little work if you want to be a Crash completionist. Overall it’s a great platform game that perfectly blends the old and the new into a fun new experience.
