It's About Time, Era ora.

Its awesome that we finally get a proper crash sequel. This game was really fun but i have to lower it by 2 points because it’s downright frustrating at times , i died up to 200 times in some levels it was that hard. Takes alot of patience to play this game
And collecting everything is way too hard it’s ridiculous. But as a massive crash fun since childhood this game was really good.

The story is also way more vibrant and they really made coco have a prominent role in the story, and the animations are beautiful as well. My only gripe with this game though is how hard it is to obtain the costumes/skins you can unlock. In a normal play through, I was only able to get 1 costume during it and I kinda wish i was able to get them more frequently Expand

Beautiful visuals, a fun challenge, great controls and creative and well designed levels makes this game one of, if not the best plataformer of all time. It feels bittersweet writing this as Toys for Bob became a Call of Duty support team but now that I have a metacritic account I want to recognize this game for the masterpiece it is.

So in Crash 4 It’s About Time you play as Crash,Coco, Tawna or Dingodile with the main 3 trying to stop Cortex and N Trophy again and with Dingodile he’s getting revenge for the minions that burned down his restaurant. The game looks stunning the game runs at a great 60fps with a little bit of frame drops every once and a while. The colors look outstanding even in the new Inverted levels where say you have already beaten a stage you can go back into them with a new gimmick like spinning to get color back, it’s all topped off with amazing music and great level design that takes full advantage of everyone’s move sets. Crash feels amazing to control either with the analog stick or the d pad but it’s kind of **** when you slip off a edge and you lose your chance to grab the new flashback tapes where it’s a serious test of patience you have to hop on boxes and make sure not to die some of them are unforgiving. Tawna is a new playable character and she controls alright she has a grappling hook that can get boxes from a far but it would be better if there was a lock on feature. You can also control Dingodile how can hover in the air for a few seconds and can suck up boxes and spit them back out, it’s like the Poltergust 3000 from Luigi’s Mansion but again does not have a aim reticule. You can also play as Cortex who uses his gun for a short hover and turns enemies into platforms. The new feature are the new Quantum Masks, they are some good fun Lani-Loli slows you to shift through dimensions and get new platforms, Akano allows your spin attack to hover in the air while your jumping, Kupuna-Wa allows for you to stop slow down time for precise platforming, and Ika Ika allows for you to flip gravity. So the masks are really fun to use. But my favorite part is how they used the Wumpa Fruit and Gems, they got rid of lives in this game so you can die as many times as you want but they have added 6 Gems to each level including the Inverted levels 12 gems per stage. Wumpa Fruit can easily nab you 3 gems by filling the meter, there is obviously one by getting every box in the stage and there is a secret one in each stage as well but for the biggest pain you can’t die more than 3 times in a single stage. That turns this game into a completion nightmare. Overall this is the best Crash game we’ve gotten it’s so much fun and I highly recommend oh pick this up right now. Ranking Masterpiece. Expand

It's not bad by any means, infact it's quite enjoyable, and there are some additional new gameplay mechanics, but it does nothing new, and nothing about it is special.

The Quantum Masks are very creative, each one of them has its own unique ability, and they're very fun to use.

The multiple playable characters are all great, Tawna is by far the best character, she has the best levels, her moveset is very smooth and her tools are well implemented. Dingodile is fun aswell, being able to shoot things and fly feels good.

Most levels are fine, but some of them are just straight up frustrating, mechanics not working correctly, movement being clunky, weird hitboxes and just overall unfair.

The boss fights are... whatever, some of them are lame while others are artificially difficult, what a letdown.

And finally I just want to talk a little bit about the new art style, long story short, it's ugly, the animations are awkward, and most characters look off (there are some exceptions though, personally I think the new Tawna looks fantastic and pretty badass).

This one is a weird case, I like Crash Bandicoot, but the gameplay was cool many years ago, now it's just not on par with other modern platformers, it feels and plays the same after all these years.

Also, no split-screen couch co-op? No actual multiplayer? Really?
    Well, that was disappointing.

    Final Rating: "Decent" ~ 6/10.

Each level is a visual feast, filled with vibrant colors, intricate details, and a charming cartoony aesthetic that stays true to the franchise's roots. From lush jungles to futuristic cities, the environments are varied and engaging, offering a delightful platforming experience. Moreover, the levels are thoughtfully crafted to strike a balance between accessibility for newcomers and a challenge for seasoned Crash Bandicoot veterans.

The gameplay improvements in Crash Bandicoot 4 are evident from the moment you take control of Crash or Coco. The controls feel tighter and more responsive, making the platforming sections smoother and more enjoyable. The introduction of new abilities, such as wall-running and time-bending mechanics, adds depth and creativity to the gameplay. These abilities are integrated seamlessly into the level design, allowing for engaging and dynamic platforming sequences that keep players on their toes.

One of the standout features of Crash Bandicoot 4 is the inclusion of multiple playable characters. In addition to Crash and Coco, players get to take on the roles of Neo Cortex, Dingodile, and Tawna, each with their own unique playstyles. This diversity not only adds gameplay variety but also provides additional depth to the story, as players get to see the events from different perspectives. The ability to switch between characters breathes new life into the gameplay, making the overall experience more enjoyable and replayable.

However, one area where Crash Bandicoot 4 stumbles is the difficulty of collecting relics and gems. While challenging gameplay has always been a hallmark of the series, the demands in this installment seem disproportionately high, especially when compared to the first trilogy. Obtaining relics, which require beating levels within tight time limits, can be particularly frustrating and may deter some players from attempting to achieve 100% completion.

Similarly, collecting gems often proves to be an arduous task. Some levels are designed with precision and patience in mind, requiring players to execute near-perfect runs to secure all the gems. This level of difficulty can be alienating to more casual players, who may find the task daunting and unrewarding. Striking a better balance between challenging and accessible collectibles would have made the game more enjoyable for a wider audience.

Despite the challenging collectibles, Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time remains a joyous celebration of the beloved franchise. The great level design, improved gameplay mechanics, and diverse cast of characters contribute to a fresh and entertaining experience that pays homage to the original trilogy. Fans of Crash Bandicoot will find themselves delighted by this nostalgic journey, and newcomers to the series will discover a thrilling platforming adventure that stands strong on its own merits.

Controls and physics just feel off, the double jump is one of the clunkiest I have ever encountered in any video game, and the fact that Crash cannot hold on to ledges never managed to quite sink into my brain because it has been a standard not only for platformers, but video games in general for literally DECADES. The locked camera makes it very hard to correctly appraise distances and positions when you're going into or out of the screen. All of this maybe could've been fine if the level design was a little more forgiving, but every level is just one long series of frustrating traps designed to immediately kill you, many of which require trial-and-error to even get a sense of what's going on. Look towards the king of platformers, Mario, on how to do this better: In every level, a mechanic is first introduced in its most basic form and without severe repercussions, then it is GRADUALLY expanded upon and made more challenging throughout the level. Whereas Crash just says: FU, it's sink or swim right from the get-go. Not fun.

The game certainly looks good, but could've definitely used more clarity in its visual design because sometimes you can't even accurately make out hazards until it is too late.

Music and sound are OK I guess. Story doesn't matter at all, it is fourth-grader s**t and I soon started skipping through all of it. Once again, take a hint from Mario: It's OK not to have a super-deep story in a platformer, but if you don't, then don't interrupt the game with dumb*ss superfluous cutscenes all the time.

    - Gameplay: It's serviceable, level design is decent. Crate placement is poor. They are often hidden out of view for no reason or have poor visibility and this hinders completion, but the generous use of hidden pathways is welcome.

Puzzles are often overtuned for 'perfection' which will require the player's suicide often if they miss something for completion, which combined with the unfamiliar quantum mask mechanics does slow the pacing to a crawl very often. Movement is okay. Crash is heavy and slide jumping doesn't provide extra speed like the originals, but gravity is spot-on (and crates don't slide past Crash's body when they should break, which is nice).

Sound design: The game's strongest aspect if I'm honest. Best in class (especially those armored crate shattering sounds...) The SFX are grade-A, but the music is not. Very forgettable tunes this time around.

    - Story: The plot and premise are very strong which I think sets an unrealistic precedent for Toys for Bob who are very new to Crash, when tasked with writing the Bandicoot's next adventure.

It takes a while to get going but it's fine for a story to be a late bloomer. The climax of the game is handled beautifully I think, with absolutely absurd setpieces and level designs popping up, and the return to normalcy and nostalgia at the end to reign in all the insanity was masterful and shows great restraint. Excellent structure.

The character writing is very poor, however. If you bought this game expecting Crash Bandicoot's usual comedic edge, you will be sorely dissappointed. This game is not funny. In fact, the characters are dry and morose. Everyone acts distant towards Crash who should be the star of the show. He ends up feeling more like a leper. Coco doesn't entertain her brother's antics and prefers to be above them, and she doesn't laugh at his jokes. They don't have the same bond as before. Tawna and Crash aren't shown to have a bond either and i think this was even MORE important to highlight as their first new adventure. He's just left in his own little box, and is ignored by everyone except Cortex, who he hugs near the end... which he has good reason for doing, honestly it's very sad.

Fans will notice just how many villains are missing in this adventure, mainly Tiny who was present in the Timetwister during Crash 3, and his absence is felt in every cutscene as we see Dingodile roam freely. Many will also cite Uka Uka's disappearance early in the story as a negative, but I think it's pivotal in keeping Cortex and N. Tropy's performances front and center, and their motivations pure, and they do not disappoint. Dingodile doesn't either.

However there are quite a few things about this new Tawna that do, and I must address them more because the game simply doesn't...
This was a golden opportunity to establish how disenfranchised Tawna is as a character, and the story doesn't address her lack of screentime with the cast prior. It treats her like she was always there and... most fans know she wasn't. Tawna wasn't always there. We don't 'know' who Tawna is, actually and never have. It's very tonedeaf. Here however, she's stubborn, brooding, and realistic looking. She feels very foreign, at the beginning, and STILL feels very foreign at the end, which I don't think was the intended effect. This character internalizes the rejection and shame that Tawna from before should, and I think that shows history there, but she's clearly NOT the Tawna from before, and it doesn't feel appropriate here. This doesn't 'feel' like Tawna, and her performance wasn't terribly likable either.

This game is an easy 8 or 9 out of 10, were it not for the shortcomings with the cast and puzzles, but I think it's solid for Toys for Bob's first attempt.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've reached 100% now, so I'll provide you with two perspectives in this review.

    1. Playing for fun or just willing to unveil the story?

If you're a casual player, you can have lots of fun with Crash 4. Indeed, people tend to say that Crash 4 is way too hard, but that's not exactly the case here. Will you die several times? Yes, but there's a game mode in which you just don't lose lives (the game is literally the same). Also, you learn with your failures, Crash 4 is all about learning the patterns. If you die multiple times, they give you an Aku Aku (so you can absorb +1 damage), and they make the next checkpoint closer. So even if you die 20 times, you'll finish the stages no matter what. Also the story is super fun, characters are very charismatic, especially Neo Cortex. Long story short, you can have lots of fun and even collect some fancy skins along the way.

    2. Looking for some fun and challenge?

Well, if just like me you like to explore the game and potentially try to snatch all achievements (e.g. platinum trophy), please be prepared to spend several weeks or even months with this one. Don't get me wrong, I've been enjoying it!

Trying to achieve 100% is the only way to have the "FULL CRASH EXPERIENCE". You'll understand everything behind the level designs, and this made me have even more respect towards the game creators. You'll learn that there's always an easy way to avoid dangers in each level (with exception of the polar bear levels which are terribly designed, sorry I had to say that). The first time I finished Cortex Castle, I died around 40 times, but after replaying the level I noticed it was all about patterns, and I managed to finish this one without dying a single time.

I love the game and I do hope they make a Crash 5, but there are two things that I really dislike in this game. First and foremost, the time relics. I love the trophies in which you have to collect everything and avoid deaths, that's challenging, but you can take your time to think about your next step (in most cases). But time relics are done for speed-runners and that's a pity that I am now blocked at 85% trophies, as the platinum relics are simply way too steep. Achieving all the gold relics would be a fair challenging trophy, but platinum?! That's really unnecessary and made it impossible for most people to achieve this milestone.

Second thing that I don't like, is that the hardest part of some levels takes place exactly when you're close to the end. So you're playing a level for 10+ minutes, and you die in a very stupid way because you're way too nervous, and then you have to restart (if you're aiming to get N. Sanely Perfect Relic).

Other than that, as I've mentioned above, I finished the game 100% (all gems, all inverted gems, all Cortex tapes, all colored gems, perfect relics), but the game is not over yet. To fully "finish" the game, one needs to achieve 106%, but in order to achieve this milestone, I would still need to get all the platinum time relics, and I am not sure if I should spend another month to get it (and there's no certainty that I'll really get it, even if I put time and effort).

I dont get how anybody likes this so much yeah it has some fun stuff to it but its not at all like classic crash games takes everything that made those games good and throws it into the trash can making it one of the most generic and boring platformers i ve played in a while wow

Great game, but it's difficult and I couldn't finish it, because I died 40 times at the first boss.

Don't get me wrong, I loved the game as a casual runner. But a when you decide to get the optional routes, which is the path of every single Crash game. It's the worst to complete. I think Toys For Bobs would have the more time and money if they:

    1. Remove the N. Verted stages so that you'll won't have to replay the entire game again, but with a different art style and a mirror mode.

    2. The Second half of the alternate character stages so that you won't retread the same level you did over 20 minutes ago.

    3. Remove the Three Lives or Less Gem to save you another level replay.

    4. The Flashback tapes because of it's higher difficulty.

    5. The N. Sanely Relics because the levels aren't made for this relic.

The gem and relic hunting is kinda ruined now due to the extreme difficulty but if this game is completed normally it’s still good! The music isn’t as good as past games; but there are some tracks like the snow levels which are still fantastic!

On the plus side the Bosses are better than ever before, It would be one of the funniest crash games you’ve played and prettiest you’ve seen too!

Warning though, some parts are not for young children with swearing from the playable character dingodile haha

+ Bold and brave move to take on the naughty dog boots and continue from legendary trilogy of crash games. Did toys for bob succeed? Yes and no. Great way to continue with the top level villains in the crash series from the start and bringing new things on the table with different playable characters (like in spyro 3) grinding rails (ratchet and clank) and new masks that brings new dimension to gameplay.

    - Difficulty goes from the start of the game hard! Building from hard to very hard through the game.
I like to complete everything in a game if i like it but in crash 4 its impossible. Perfect relics challenge should be something extra for very skillfull players to test their skills and gold relic should be enough good time and not to force go all the way. Naughty dog did bonus levels feel very chill and fun brake from hectic level but in this game they are very hard puzzles...

Very good crash game nonetheless of its flaws! Good momentum on levels and very good music fitting to crash game. if it wasnt for the repetition on levels and crazy 106% requiments this review would be even higher.

Really toxic game. Its very colorful ok nice visuals but why they make it evil difficult? They lost the fun part of the game.. U need to put a lots of effort to just finish the stages later on in the game. If u want to take all gems and the runs u must spit real blood on gamepad. Realy why?? For what reason? I am very disappointed......

My issues with Crash however stopped me from seeing the game as the energetic, yet simple adventure that others seemed to view it as. In an attempt to play it safe and provide a formulaic yet definitive crash experience for all to enjoy, it failed to grab me at any moment with its stages or story.
Although pretty, levels rarely ever contain something to genuinely impress me. More than anything it can feel like an obstacle course that's gratifying in small doses but generally either frustrates me or made me feel nothing. As I pushed through the story hoping for an instance I can experience some classic video game enjoyment but the moment never came. The levels' low connection to the story made the problem of the game feeling like a checklist more apparent, which would be ok if the experience was more rewarding.
Overall, not for me. The game no doubt had effort and love put in with good intentions but its hassle-like gameplay and low reward for input made me put it down after hours of trying to grab its hook.

I don't know what Toys For Bob was thinking, but most probably they wanted to torture us. The levels are too long. The og trilogy levels were up to 5 mins max to beat. In here it can be 15 to 20 min easy - for regular level not the harder ones at the end.

Parents, if you have fond memories of the OG trilogy and want your kids to have fun with Crash... don't buy this game. For the sanity of the next generation. And your own. I like to think of mysel as fairly patient person and yet this game had me raging. In the end if you like bashing your head against a wall and hope to win go for it.

I honestly did not expect such a stellar game. Crash Bandicoot 4 is breathtakingly beautiful, features an amazing soundtrack full of references to the original trilogy, offers tons of content, and thrilled me to bits with its brilliant level design. What’s more, it stayed true to its gameplay roots, while introducing loads of great new mechanics. For me it’s the game of the year. I salute you, Toys For Bob! [12/2020, p.58]

Crash Bandicoot 4 is a worthy addition to the Crash legacy. It captures the spirit, fun, and challenge of the original games, and adds a lot more that genuinely makes the experience even better rather than simply padding out the gameplay. The game is certainly challenging and the levels could probably use a few more checkpoints, but the number in the game is truer to the spirit of the originals than modern gaming standards. A little perseverance will get you through the game, but it’s going to take a little work if you want to be a Crash completionist. Overall it’s a great platform game that perfectly blends the old and the new into a fun new experience.
