Finally the combat is atrocious. It's sluggishly implemented and enemies respawn any time you leave an area. When you die, you lose half you experience so get stuck on an enemy and you're now in an endless loop of progression halting. Finally the main character's bland and has no personality. Maybe if you can find this under $10 you can have a fun weekend with it (it's short) but if you're looking for an awesome immersive experience akin to Prey, this isn't it. Expand

Control is aggressively mediocre -- a classic case of a game tripping over its own dick. Many of the mechanics work beautifully, and the environment is well-conceived and creepy. I've heard a lot of buzz about the story, but it's pretty boilerplate "evil corporation exploits the paranormal" stuff. Where Control falls flat on its face is a) technical issues (yes, frame rates drop precipitously right when the game spams you with enemies), and b) extreme fluctuations in difficulty. Enemies will appear out of nowhere, or manifest behind you with no warning whatsoever, decimating your health. Then you wait for 30 seconds for the game to reload, only to get kicked back 3-5 minutes and have to work your way back to where you were, re-fighting enemies along the way. One boss randomly destroys the floor, causing you to fall to your death, causing you to wait for the load screen, causing you to claw your way back, etc. Control would have been exceptional but for these perpetual frustrations that could have so easily been solved. It's not for everyone, and I get why it's polarizing. I loved the bizarreness of the world, the lore, the skill progression, the Metroidvania elements. You'll probably die once or twice each big fight, but then you learn and improve and feel great. All the way past the Ashtray Maze (a masterpiece), I really liked the game. Unfortunately, that game ends all to soon. And a new, horrible game takes its place.

The curtain drops and suddenly you're playing a very bad Dark Souls. The difficulty scales in the most infuriating ways for every side quest and the end of the main quest. Long load times and long runs back make for gameplay loops of just dying over and over to have a slim chance at the perfection needed to succeed. When you do win a fight, it's usually because you found a cheesy spot where the AI is too dumb to engage and you just fling auto-aimed bricks. Otherwise, it's nonstop homing attacks and enemy design that couldn't be worse or lazier if it tried.

The Jukebox is an embarrassment to good game design. The weapon upgrades and customization feels so poorly balanced that there's often a "correct" option. Although, even that can be hard to tell because this game loves to punish you for trying anything new at this point. You'll be dead before you know what did or didn't work.

Add in bugs, crashes, and performance issues on the PS4 and your nightmare is complete. One loading screen after another. If you enjoy that amount of grind and masochism, then I hope you enjoy Control. Otherwise, play something with competent balance that respects your time.

It’s supposed to be a story-strong game that can stand on its own but also pulls all Remedy titles into one universe. However, this is not the case. Control plays more like a tech demo, of which it does very well, in its physics and lighting department. Though this does have a drawback on the PS4, with terrible framerates and freezing as the game tries to keep up, even after the patches! And then there is hardly a story to be found in comparison to Remedy’s other titles. I really wanted to like this game, after all it was trying to pull all the Remedy games into one universe, but I think in doing that it lost track of itself. At the end of the day, what makes Control Control? What will I remember in the long run, what will make me come back to this game years down the road? Answer nothing except perhaps watching the videos of the AWE DLC.

This is a game that never should have been a full game. Its story is too thin, it would have been better off as an expansion or something that was no more than perhaps 6 hours. At least then it would have been concise and it wouldn’t be filled with ridiculous fetch quests and empty open world. I mean come on you become Director, head of the entire Bureau, and your underlings have you collect mold samples. Seriously? Also, should have been an expansion because this game simply can’t stand on its own. It pulls too much of Alan Wake and even Max Payne into its story, which is the point of the game, but if you’ve never played those games you’d be at a complete loss as to what it’s talking about.

You have to play past the first two chapters to finally start getting into some meat of the story and have yourself wanting to know more. But you’re in for a shock of disappointment. Every moment as you progress through the story you’re hoping for that moment where story and explanation starts happening but with every new cutscene you’ll feel your dread rising as you realize the characters know what’s going on but not you. The main character, Jesse had some terrible event happen to her as a child in her hometown of Ordinary. You want to know what happened there and why? So do I, because you’ll never receive a satisfactory answer.

By the end of the game, I understood where the Hiss came from and how this event came to be but it just wasn’t that great. It should have been explained over time, teasing little bits and pieces making you want to get to the bottom of the mystery. And how is the biggest explanation in the game a 5 minute monologue where you actually have to stop and stand next to the character because it’s not a cutscene?! And players could totally blow past it without even knowing because it’s during a really monotonous portion of the last level where you’re desperate to get it over with!

Gameplay-wise: It has difficulty spikes, ranging from a simple cake-walk to heading into another room and finding the combat impossible, dying four times in a row against the same boss, with a horrendous checkpoint system that has you traversing across a good portion of the map to get back to the battle. It’s so bad to the point that an assist mode was patched into the game later on with reduced damage and invincibility, just to make you want to throw the controller through the tv a little less. This can plainly be seen in the achievement percentages when only 16% of people finished this game! The enemies themselves are just copy/paste, once they’re all introduced they either shoot at you or throw objects at you, with bosses sprinkled in between, it’s not different enough to make memorable combat using tactics. There’s a skill tree and weapon mods, which shouldn’t even exist. The skills don’t add to helping you get through the game and by the end of the game, you’ll be drowning in weapon mods and not giving most of them a second glance before turning them into upgrade points.

As someone who managed to get a platinum trophy (and not going way out of the way to do so), I found 323 collectibles throughout the game and that wasn’t even all of them!! I spent hours reading things that should have been put in the game to explain what the heck was happening. Collectibles are supposed to be something that adds to the game but ultimately, doesn’t matter if you miss them, however in Control, you range from if you don’t pick these up you’ll be even more lost or why the heck do these exist because who cares what office drama is happening?

Don’t bother picking this title up, it’s not a game and it’s just plain not good. This game clearly exists only to push the Alan Wake story forward, mostly on the monetary level; they wanted to make some quick money to begin the AW sequel. Your best option? Watch someone’s videos on YouTube of the AWE DLC Alan Wake moments, as will probably play a factor into the upcoming Alan Wake 2.

The puzzles in this game are incredibly dense. You will never figure them out without using a guide. Solutions dont feel organic. You will walk away from this game wondering how anyone was supposed to figure that out. Beyond that the story is convulted and pretentious. (Even for a kojima fan). The destruction and special effects is top notch . Unfortunately not enough to redeem this game for me.

The writers (both of the reviews and game) should be deeply ashamed. They (the game developers) took a great concept, which they even marketed as based on SCP Foundation, and absolutely ruined it. The main character won't shut the **** up. It's maddening. She constantly narrates everything with the most inane commentary of all time. There is zero immersion because you are not the main character, some moron is. The best parts of the game are totally immolated by this. The gameplay loop is also tragically bad. Run through office space after office space shooting enemies who for some reason take your entire clip to kill, but themselves are armed with SMGs and sometimes even forcefields (that also take your whole clip to bring down). There are no difficulty settings either, except to make yourself invincible or turn on one-hitting. Which of course, ruins any tension in the fights. The dialogue is all poorly written exposition, and then followed by more inane and incredibly annoying narration by the main character. All I could think is "why won't she shut the **** up so I can have my own thoughts about what is happening." The mystery and paranormal intrigue is the only redeeming factor, but they ripped the concepts straight from SCP, which is a much much better use of your time if you enjoy that kind of fiction content, because SCP contains literally thousands of stories, and "objects of power", and this game contains maybe 5 or so. The game's best quality is that it isn't totally linear, and you can explore around and find clues and hints about the mysterious objects and events. But this is not the focus, and there isn't nearly enough of this content to justify the game's existence.

Do not buy this game. I was lucky that I got it for free from a friend and didn't waste a dime on it

Instead of pulling you into a story, it leaves you constantly scratching your head at why any of it matters. And you really won't care in the end after being assaulted by constant gibberish.

Also, players must pick up endless text notes of which 1 in 25 serves any real purpose. After being bored to death and stopping reading these moronic notes, players are left scrambling to find the important gems tossed in with garbage. Any game relying on text to fill in massive plot holes... sorry... you had one job and you failed.

I honestly can't recommend this game at all. There are far too many games out there much more deserving of spending your time on.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Yeah i'm on rage mode. I bought this game because i'm a freak when its comes to telekinesis like sh*ts i love them. And i love the most of the games when i'm feeling i'm free. This game doesnt give you the feeling of freedom. You're playing almost entire game in a god damn building. Oo i'm flying but you know i have a god damn ceiling of my head. Let me give you a good review. First of all games graphics arts good. I loved it. But everywhere is concrete so you're feeling playing the game like its in grayscale mode. When i first started the playing this game i had a feeling this game is little bit scary the atmosphere is amazing like lord of the rings. You were embraced with darkness and the feeling of how the hell i am gonna alive this place? Then the things happened. You kill red head robot like creatures. One two tree bam bam bam then it hits you. Dude why can't i get any response. Looks like i'm killing punching bags. One two tree down. So in the beginning you think damn i'm in a claustrophobic place and this god damn monsters ain't help the mood. You see people hanging in the air and you were waiting the game needs badass foes but you are getting only the silent sh*theads. Then you are not going to understand where are you and what are you doing. You're going to speak some people and baaaaaaamm you realised your characters dialogues are like sh*ts. Ton of sh*ts. She is always sob* what i'm gonna dooo, plis help meeee sob* sob* Dude no sister. YOU ARE THE F*CKING HEAD OF THIS PLACE! WHAT KIND OF CHARACTER YOU HAVE YOU SAID I'M GONNA BE THE LEADER OF THIS BUREU. WORLDS GOING TO BECOME HISS KINGDOM. DROP THAT SH*TTY ATTITUDE.

So i played this game to the end. There where some amazing things like superpowers. You can play whit foes with good reflexes. I said look at me ma i'm crazy as sh*t. Bam bam bam *silent noodle like foes dies* Why the f*ck i can't torture them. This enemies never going to end. You play almost entire game doing someones footwork and repetitive mission. Go there and find someone. Dude are you f*cking kidding me what kind of map is this. You have spawn point. But that building has stories. Where is the god damn spawn point. And when i die or quit the game i begin at the nearest spawn point. Don't start with the building plan. Because that buildings architecture maybe one of hiss agent i suspect. You are playing amazing game but story is sh*t, environment is sh*t. OP is crying sh*t. One thing isn't **** wepons and superpowers aaaaaaaaand one hallway in front of bathrooms. That place is looking green plants i loved it. I LOVED A F*CKING BATHROOM HALLWAY BECAUSE EVERYWHERE IS GRAY. *calms down*

So your character is tells you, you are my only and a only family polaris. Help me. And then she's causing to polaris being killed by the hiss. God! *histerical laughs* How the hell this sheila get the job being the director i couldn't understand. So Polaris dies game ends, but not end. Story is sh*t i didn't get whats happening. I swear and swear because i needed to wait 15 min cast screen. Dude i f*cking hate this i've bought this game why the hell i cant skip this sh*t. Every time i open game i have to wait some f*cking logos thats angering me but why the hell i need to wait cast crew names? Get over it.

So game needs to be more freedom like and color management is boring you need to give some color change. Story is like sh*t and the dialogues. I hate almost every time when Jesse speaks. She is waiting too long every between sentences and this game needs boss enemies. I though i'm gonna kill my brother but i'm went to give that douche a head massage wtf? And this is the most i'm curious about. 52 GB game, and the map is not that big. WHY? Every enemies looks alike. Flying to mold ones. I only see red, head, arms, legs. Boring. When i kill enemy at least i can tore apart them. I'm hitting them with forklift but they are like they made of adamantium and puff they are smoke. Let me see blood, broken pieces. They took my brothers and sister and made them fly in the air. And the f*cking doors. If i can't throw some huge sh*t with my finger i'm sure i can open them.

Umm i'm thinking do i forget something. Yes. I didn't get the feeling of hero who saves people. I must have killed thousand enemies and hundreds of people but didn't get. So you need to threw some people which is medic helping some someone or yelling hail the queen. And please do not use wuss characters. When i play game i can use variables techniques and make them great but. Oo sob* what i'm gonna do now i need to save my brother like characters killing the mood. Use freedom elements such as bouce from wall, run on the wall, when character uses levitate and dash she needs to continue, etc. And i can't heal by myself. WHY? Last of all running. This girl got some god power and she can't use that to run fast? She can use levitate some extend make herself light and dash in theory. Facepalm*

    This is it. Stinson out.

Graphics are partly nice, but totally bland. Level design and navigation are just terrible.
There is no emotion involved on any level, everything is under control. The enemy is nameless and every encounter has basically the same enemy types, and they all look just unhealthy. And they keep coming. You have no idea why you have to keep fighting them at all. Combat and it's gameplay is lifeless. You are kind of required to spam your throwing powers, everything else is fluff. You find many, many mods, but they just add a percent onto something you probably already have.

I’ll start with the positives: Control offers a unique IP, a rarity these days that’s quite refreshing. Your character’s abilities also chain together in a way that feels both powerful and natural.

Unfortunately, the game’s negatives outweigh the positives:

Control’s heavy use of its signature red and black color palette makes it difficult to see enemies. This is especially frustrating for a game that relies so heavily on the use of visual cues to indicate when an enemy is about to attack. I found myself frequently dying simply because I couldn’t see where I was being attacked or because I fell through a hole I had no idea was there.

I also hated getting swarmed by hordes of enemies who spawn in with seemingly no rhyme or reason. I experienced more than one encounter where a new group of enemies spawned in before I had even finished dealing with the initial wave. Taken together with the fact that enemies are so hard to see, I often felt that my deaths were “cheap” rather than outcomes of my genuinely having made a mistake.

The other problem with Control’s combat is that the environments don’t lend themselves to the way the game tells you to play. During Control’s many endless loading screens you’ll frequently be admonished to move around in combat to avoid being swarmed by enemies. The problem is that this frequently isn’t an option as you’re forced to fight in narrow hallways or narrow platforms that don’t give you any options for movement.

Finally, the game runs terribly on a base PS4. I’ve played tons of games on my PS4 and never encountered anything remotely approaching the performance issues of Control. The game’s framerate will frequently drop dramatically or freeze altogether and the load times are painfully long.

You can get a sense for how frustrating these issues are for players by looking at the game’s achievement statistics. Just 21% of players completed chapter 6 (still a long way off from the end of the game). Give this one a pass.

Never really felt like a game deserves a zero before but find this game almost irredeemable. The powers are not fun, the shooting is lacklustre and the story is boring. It also likes to withhold information for no real reason. The worst PS4 game I've played.

The gameplay may be mediocre, but the writing and performances are the worst of any video game since the dawn of time. From the very first overwhelmingly blunt and graceless voiceover exposition dump, Control outted itself as the product of the laziest minds in recent memory.

Impactful gunplay bolstered by a telekinetic twist, and a mystery you’ll be turning over for a long time afterwards. Welcome to the Oldest House, Director. [Issue#167, p.79]

The writing, direction, and performances are consistently brilliant. This is Remedy at the peak of its game. Control feels like a company rediscovering itself, waking from a long slumber. Remedy’s legs work as intended once more, the vestiges of sleep paralysis a distant memory.

I don’t want to use the word masterpiece lightly, but what else do you call the combination of gleefully chaotic gameplay with earnest storytelling in a setting as refreshingly unique as Bioshock? What else do you call a combat system that goes so far beyond the simple act of shooting a gun without drilling down into a set of intricate menus and complicated controls? What else do you call darkly malevolent horror that doesn’t feel like it was cribbed from someplace else? What else do you call the crowning achievement of a studio with a unique voice, an uneven track record, and 25 years of experience? If there’s a better word to describe what Remedy has achieved with Control, I can’t think of it.
