Issues with the naming aside, revisiting the title responsible for turning Call of Duty into one of the biggest juggernauts in gaming via this reboot has proved to be the redemption they needed. The Call of Duty experience has in no way been redefined, but by going back to basics like this and readopting the structure of their earlier works, Infinity Ward has delivered their best, most varied, and fun game since 2011's Modern Warfare 3.

While the campaign may test your patience when it comes to Russophobia and historical revisionism, it's hard to fault the actual gameplay. Much like Call of Duty 4, the single-player offering is a diverse series of memorable and exciting encounters. The exploration of the more horrific elements of war and combat are interesting, if also controversial. Placing civilians and children infront of your gun is an odd move for a series known for deriving fun from it's bombastic action and non-stop shooting, but it did garner an emotional reaction from me when I was forced to pick shots carefully in a crowded city to avoid killing innocents or something along those lines, even if that response was just disgust at the brutality of the moment.

The multiplayer is a blast. It's largely still the same experience we've been playing for years now in terms of the modes and core gameplay, but the new engine makes it all feel fresh again. The controls are the same, but shooting is better than ever as weapons carry a sense of real weight are more devastating than ever. The presentation is also phenomenal. The photorealistic graphics and outstanding sound design (I'll likely never tire of hearing bullet casings hit the ground) make each match just cinematic as any of the campaign levels. The amount of freedom you're given to customize your guns and overall loadouts offer the depth of an RPG and the returning War mode from WWII offers the scale and massive battles of a Battlefield game.

The reinvigorated Spec Ops is a nice change of pace from the now repetitive Zombies offering we typically get. Although I personally would have preffered the return of Ghosts' underrated "Extinction" mode, it's hard to not appreciate the amount of genuine cooperation and tactics these missions require even if the difficulty of them can be downright grueling. I would love to see a patch that makes enemies less aggressive as often times failure isn't the result of poor planning or teamwork, but rather every AI on the map bum-rushing your location at once.

With their last two outings coming up short of past glories and causing them to lag behind their peers in the series, Infinity Ward wisely decided to take a look back at what worked for them when they created what is still widely considered to the best Call of Duty. While not without its controversial elements in the monetization and story, this reboot is definitely a welcome return to form. Modern Warfare is once again the king of the FPS scene and it's all due to it capturing a style similar to the one that wowed everyone back in 2007.

Yet it also goes deeper as certain levels have you switch roles throughout, including one harrowing mission where you play as a child. The action sequences are once again spectacular, and the creators are uncompromising in their depiction of terror and violence. This is one of the darkest entries in the entire franchise. But it remains gripping and endlessly thrilling from the first mission to the last.

I've needed a good FPS campaign, and especially a good CoD FPS shooter campaign, and Infinity Ward has delivered. Sensitive or politically correct players be damned. Can't wait for the next installment.

This game would be 10/10 but sadly the deep state or otherwise known as the Pentagon had to ruin the story with anti-russian propaganda so it falls short of being a classic.
Some of the greatest missions "Piccadilly" and "Clean House" are also way to short, I would have loved to see more of that but sadly most of the game takes place in a generic made up Islamic country.

I'm returning to Call of Duty after nearly 7 years and I'm not disappointed. The game looks and feels fresh. The new graphical engine is superb and the gameplay is smooth, yet realistic. The VO work is top notch and again, it looks and sounds amazing. You could actually be there it's so good! There's no crazy, over the top moments. It's grounded and I loved every minute of it. Spec ops is a let down as there's isn't much to do and it's very repetitive. It's more fun with friends but it's still just ok. The mp is great with a few things that need fixing. The maps are impossible to master as there are so many angles and hiding spots. The footsteps are way too loud and need to be turned down by at least 50%. It encourages camping which brings us full circle back to the maps. Gunplay and customization are great. This could be a great COd but it's up to IW to fix the few issues. DLC maps will be free so that's a huge positive as well. It will keep people engaged for a longer amount of time. At the end of the day it's still COD. COD will always be around but iI don't think we'll every get that giddy feeling like we had back with MW2 and Black Ops 1. It's sad but those days are past us and other, more complex games are filling the void. Expand

Show this game to 12 yr old me playing MW2 and my brain would be **** melted. Some glitches and bugs but i trust those will get ironed out soon. Campaign had jaw on the floor moments and really captured the essence of what “modern warfare” means. This is exactly what Call of Duty in 2019 should look and feel like.

This is the best that Call of Duty has been in a very long time. It offers the strongest campaign since Black Ops 2 and the multiplayer can be very fun when it's not being plagued by lobbies of campers. The co-op mode unfortunately needs a lot of work.

When its being COD this is the best COD since MW2. The maps that riff off Battlefield aren't too special. and I'm not too partial to the game-modes that borrow from Counter-strike/Rainbow Six (I personally prefer old-school deathmatch) but there are game modes for everyone. Graphics, sound and gun play are really top-notch. Didn't play the campaign and never have in a COD game.

Game mechanics are better than ever!
Multiplayer: Great experience, deep weapon customisation.
Campaign: Too short, and new captain price is does not have the same nobility and empathy. It is alright, but a bit empty for that price tag.
I bought it, but I feel the campaign should be more complete.

However, it's a huge turnoff when it comes to the length of the campaign and the maps in the multiplayer side did not align well in terms of a bad spawning system and campers. Especially when the special ops even the survival mode feels unfinished and underdeveloped that could easily upset those that love to play coop with friends or strangers online. This is a technically well crafted reboot, but it desperately needs more room for improvement. But hey, it's better than the fantasy Black Ops 4 right? Expand

Modern Warfare is a convincing game campaign-wise. I won’t enter into the politics ground where some things are indeed criticizable. My review is made with the belief that the story of this game is purely fictional, but I get some people might get offended by the way the truth of some real-life-similar events might be modified. Those things aside, the campaign was quite a good surprise. IModern Warfare is a convincing game campaign-wise. I won’t enter into the politics ground where some things are indeed criticizable. My review is made with the belief that the story of this game is purely fictional, but I get some people might get offended by the way the truth of some real-life-similar events might be modified. Those things aside, the campaign was quite a good surprise. I felt interested and entertained. Unlike most of other CoDs, it was not just about shooting enemies from point A to B with a dull story. There was more depth in this story mode, more variety. You can play as a soldier trying to neutralize a terrorist attack or as a child seeing his country destroyed. We’re showed something new, something different with many bridges made to our current world. It’s really good to see great Campaigns being made again. Unfortunately, it is very short. It would be good if the sequel is released in a DLC but that will most likely be MW2 material.

The multiplayer mode got me very excited at first sight. The weapon design is very profound, there are a lot of attachments and weapons can virtually be unique (even though in the end some weapons are always overused), each having a different feel. I loved the new Gunfight mode, and Ground War is a smart addition despite its many flaws (vehicles?). Crossplay is also such a perfect addition, and NAT problems were all corrected in the process of it. Connection-wise (despite the 12hz private matches), I am very happy with this game. Something I regret is the absence of ranked play (and a bad private match system where items cannot be banned, once again, resulting in abuses such as seen in CDL Minnesota), but instead we got a SBMM system that fails to convince me. Furthermore, some of the maps are very debatable, knowing the developers had in mind to make them newbie-friendly (i.e. safe zones) took dynamism away and quite frankly results in too much camping. Maps such as Azhir Cave or Piccadilly are questionable, alongside the large size maps such as the horrendous Euphrates Bridge. All that said, I think the MP remains correct, but not good enough to make one think it’s better on every aspect than all what COD has showed in previous titles.

Finally, we cannot ignore the Spec Ops mode. And I would say that this was my biggest disappointment. It’s empty, feels very cheap, and IW did it way better 12 years ago. I don’t like the idea to make it on a giant BR-like map. The ops are all similar, without any good story background (despite many teases aimed at making us think oppositely) and boring. Day one, there were very few ops, and at this day (26/01/20), I am still very disappointed in it. If the Spec Ops mode of MW was similar to the ones of MW2 & MW3, the game would have been a success in my opinion. But this big minus shows how not ready IW were to release this game, and once again, gave the community less than what it expected.

That being said, the game is good. We’ve seen good things, and we must encourage Activision to continue in this direction. Crossplay and limitation of microtransactions are important additions that I hope will show the way for the future.

There's alot to this game so I'm gonna break it down into elements that I think are worth mentioning.

Firstly, the important parts.... Graphics, Sound Design and mechanics are all spectacular. I would honestly say that the gunplay mechanics in this title are pretty much the best I've come across in a shooter.... top of the pile.

The solo campaign is just as taught, tense and at times graphic as has been reported on, and ... well, I'm sure most have seen what many are saying about it... basically, war is complicated, Russia is bad, America is the righteous savior, blah, blah. It's a decent romp, but with some pretty gruesome moments. Acting is decent though and characters are well portrayed.

Multiplayer modes are decently varied. I'm not hugely keen on the very large map 'ground war' mode tbh. It's just too chaotic for my tastes. Other modes on medium maps such as the bomb disposal one and domination are decent, with potential for mastering the maps. My favourite is the one in the Swiss Alps. The Arabic maps are often very complex (particularly the Palace map) with a complicated matrix of interconnected corridors and alleys on various levels. Had some genuinely fun times so far, particularly with the quad bikes etc.

So here it is..... gunfight. My baby. It's an absolute gem of a mode. The maps are mostly superb - I particularly love King, Pine, Stacks and Speedball, but they are all varied and most offer decent opportunities for tense highly competitive gameplay. The seamless and simple joining of lobbies and fast turnover of games makes it a very addictive mode. What can i say.... this mode alone is worth the ticket price for me, esp if the game is picked up for around 30 quid. Kind of wish they just sold this mode for 15 quid as a standalone MP game, as it would mean the player base would be huge for ages like Rocket League.

I pre-judge the f*** out of AAA releases these days but this one is good. Guns feel great, graphics are lightyears ahead of previous CODs (which puts them at about average for 2019), maps have somewhat taken a departure from the 3 lane system. Still early but PVP feels balanced although I'm still in the noob servers.

Storey seems ok to me not really why I play CoD mind but seems to be one of the better campaigns. Overall I am really pleased with it so far.

Multiplayer is also very good, slower paced and a little more tactical which is not my usual style so having to adjust a little to this. It also seems a bit more campy but then you just need to check things more now and use flashbangs etc. Weapons all feel nice and beefy sounding, I actually do not mind using a sniper rifle in this game now as well. Not my usual cuppa but on the big maps it good. As usual it has me shouting foul mouthed words at times and raging when I play rubbish but when you do get a good game its great as usual. Maps should be free etc and here is hoping that its just cosmetics that you pay for (does anyone trust them on this? I do not think I do atm)

Now for all the reviews that are 0 you guys must be idiots for starters it is a Call of Duty game and you must know what you are getting into, bugs on release day etc. There are enough changes in this game to keep it a little bit fresh. The user score means nothing on Metacritic as I do not see how this game is anywhere near a 0 unless you lot are just review bombing it then well that's that I guess. Activision still has time to mess this game up and knock more points off though but from me it is a very good effort from the people at InfiniteyWard at least at launch. Crossplay is welcome so no buying this game on other platforms etc if you have friends scattered about on different platforms. Some nice new maps along with 64 players etc. Weapons have lots of customisation and so far they all seem pretty good with nothing being well overpowered. Mouse and keyboard support on consoles is also worth a mention :)

Right off to complete the campaign now.

Overall Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is a good title that is marred by the expectations that the Modern Warfare name brings with it. The campaign has some really stellar gameplay moments that are brought down by the mediocre plot. Multiplayer was fun but felt a bit like the competition’s output (despite there being no Battlefield release this year) which may be a turn off for some. I don’t think Modern Warfare 2019 has done anything to make me rethink waiting for substantial price drops to play Call of Duty campaigns, because clearly multiplayer is still Activision’s main focus and that’s just not where I get my kicks.
