This DLC completes Bloodborne to a full 10/10. Exciting, beautiful, well designed environment. More colours to the game, lots of bright shining weapons. Right pace of the game, and challenging new bosses to learn. Rightfully best PS4 game so far over the years.

This is what DLC should be, not costumes and other trash, but actual gameplay. This is much more linear than the main game of bloodborne but it plays perfect homage to the main game with locations that you will recognise with a host of new enemies with bosses that will test your limits.

Miyazaki's Magnum Opus. Featuring the best levels and the best bosses in Bloodborne, The Old Hunters is without a doubt the best DLC of the souls DLCs. What more could you want? The only reason it does not get a perfect score is because 2 of the 5 bosses (Laurence and Living failures) were borderline bad. However, The Old Hunters is damn near perfect, and in my opinion on par with the first half of the original Dark Souls, which is quite the feat. Expand

It also has some twisted and very disturbing moments, possibly more so than the original game. There a lot of new weapons and some of them are really useful and cool to use. I was a big ludwig blade user in the vanilla game but I found myself leaving that behind and try the new weapons.I instantly fell in love with the Whirligig Saw. The DLC is is full of blood stone chuncks so you don't have to worry about farming them to upgrade your new weapons.
During my play-trough I came across 5 bosses and 3 of them took me very long time to beat. They all feel unique and you have to adept to beat them. The soundtracks during the fights were absolutely amazing.
Overall I feel this is one of the best DLC I have ever purchased and played. Bloodborne fans will love this

Amazing bosses, original weapons, beautiful level design, spent 15 hours to finish it alone and spent already 30 hours helping and fighting other players. Bloodborne is to my point of view the game of the year, and this DLC is mandatory, representing almost 25% of the full game and the ultimate challenge for the hunters who loved Bloodborne.

-> Absolutely brutal difficulty. Seriously, the DLC makes Bloodborne look like a walk in the park.
For everyone who wanted a greater challenge.

-> 11 completely new trick weapons; 5 new side arms; 9 new armor sets.
For everyone who wanted more weapon-variety

-> Strength-, Arcane-, Arcane-Strength- and Bloodtinge-Strength-builds have been supported,
For everyone who wanted more build-variety.

-> 2 new and expansive areas contrasty to what was given in the vanilla version.
For everyone who wanted more variety in colors and level aesthetics.

-> Some of THE BEST boss encounters and orchestral scores not only in Bloodborne or souls, but in all of gaming!
(I'm not exaggerating, you will be surprised!)

-> For all people who wanted to transform completely into a beast since Bloodborne's release:
You have to wait no longer!
(there is also another transformation that I won't spoil for you ;)

-> Lore that tightly fits into the missing parts of the given Lore of Bloodborne, granting answers to almost every of my questions considering the Lore, creating a complete overall picture of the mysterious events of Yharnam.

-> Tons of new secrets to uncover

-> And last but not least: more Bloodborne of course ;)

I gave the vanilla version of Bloodborne a 9/10 in my review, considering some of the minor problems it had, but ''The Old Hunters'' completes Bloodborne in every way to make it, for me, a 10/10 game.
With the long-loading times patched and overall bugs and performance issues fixed, Bloodborne in combination with ''The Old Hunters'' now is a polished masterpiece, granting one of the finest gaming experiences of all time in my opinion.
It ruined other games for me completely to be honest, that's how good it is.
    At last, I highly recommend the DLC for everyone who enjoyed Bloodborne;
For all the people who didn't: I would still give it a try, maybe now it changes your mind about it, but don't expect groundbreaking changes to the established formula.

The Old Hunters is a lore-focused expansion which (sort of) explains the backstory of Bloodborne's Lovecraftian plot. There is a great story here, too, but once again it's buried in some item description screens, which is my only real gripe against the SoulsBorne series. There are a few cut scenes but these don't help the player understand what's actually going on. Plus in order to access the expansion you have to meet some requirements in the main Bloodborne game. But enough with my few gripes, because everything else is amazing.

First of all The Old Hunters is tougher than the main game, especially in its beginning area. You have to defeat many minions and hunters like yourself, as well as powerful giants who are more like mini bosses. Regarding boss fights, try and defeat Ludwig solo, hah! But after that initial beating, players should have gotten used to the expansion's increased difficulty.

Furthermore, all but one of the 16 new weapons and firearms can be found in the environment. No need to buy them from the messenger shop like in the main game. Highlights include the Holy Moonlight Sword and Rakuyo. This expansion actually has more cool weapons than the main game.

Last but not least, the soundtrack is still amazing. The new music is a perfect fit for the game and along with the graphical style gives it a unique atmosphere. The theme of the Ludwig boss fight is a highlight.

You can't go wrong with The Old Hunters, it's essential for every Bloodborne player. It's one of the best expansions in modern gaming, a far cry from the average DLCs which often feel boring and unnecessary.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a fantastic addition to my Game of the Year. The Old Hunters adds three huge areas, five bosses, armor sets, and sixteen new weapons (eleven right hand, five left hand) for twenty bucks. It's a steal, hunters.

It's more Bloodborne really, except darker, more twisted, and more difficult. I ran my level 260 through, on NG++, and had a helluva time. It's certainly less forgiving than anything in the vanilla game. Three of the five new boss fights are some of the best in the game, and all three of the new areas, even the opening, reskinned Hunter's Nightmare, are iconic and memorable, both visually and aurally.

The weapons are badass. One knock against the vanilla game was the lack of variety in builds. The Old Hunters remedies that through the addition of the new weapons, but especially to Bloodtinge and Arcane builds. Most of the new weapons have unique movesets and are just plain fun to use, like the Whirligig Saw and the Bloodletter. Also, The Old Hunters adds three new Hunter's Tools to bolster Arcane builds.

The Old Hunters is great and exceedingly difficult. I got about fourteen hours out of it on one character, but I'll be running all my characters through it. It's so fun and the weapons are so awesome and I can't wait to go through it again.

If you look at how I review games, you will see that The Old Hunters has earned the 10. Let's Play!

    Pros
1.Adding a lot of weapons in the game increases a lot of replayability.
2.New areas are great. I love environment and everything.

    Cons
1.DLC is a little short in my opinion (I was hoping to have big area in Astral Tower, but well ...)
2.Boss design are not unique. Only the first is, the others lacks of innovation; 2nd like another version of celestial being. 3rd like another hunter with flashy movement, 4rd like normal human enemy in CD wielding a big blade. Optional boss is just like Cleric Beast with fire.
3.Enemies in Research hall are quite boring. (Just 1 type of enemy for a whole map, that's lazy)
4..Story is still vague, I don't think this DLC add anything to the vanila story. I don't understand the connection at all. On top of that, I don't know how these three maps connect to each other especially from Research hall to Fishing hemlet. We were on very top of tower and then we walk into the swamp ??? (at least they should build a lift for us to go to the ground lv first)

That's it, and no improvement in NG+, no PVP arena. This dlc doesn't address the stagnant issues that are here for a long time.

In sum, I was expected more from DLC. It is still good, but not great. If you are bloodborne real fan, this DLC worth, but if you were not impressed much by Bloodborne vanila, I suggest you skip this one :>.

The new weapons are spectacular and feel really viable for different builds and runs. The enemy variety is substantial enough to feel good and not lacking too much.

There are a couple reasons I cannot give TOH a 10/10:

    1) Despite some of the best bosses being apart of this, there is a couple that are not so clever or well thought out, leading to a few frustrating moments as a result.

    2) There are a couple of enemy types that are reused, but others that are so strong and powerful that they can serve as unofficial mini-bosses because of this, making them tedious if you are not on point with them.

That's really it though. There is a alot great things this expansion has done for fans and even in a critical eye, it stands on a positive scale very well. It also serves the notion that quality beats length; it might seem short, but the content presented is grand and strong. As mentioned, this easily stands among From's best dlc work ever made.

I honestly think that some parts of this Expansion should have been in the main game.
It contains the best boss fights in the entire game, adds more depth to the story and answers some questions.
Also, it's significantly more challenging, which is a good thing because the second half of the main game was a cakewalk. The only thing that bothered me is its length, it feels very short but

Bloodborne: The old Hunters is a very refreshing take on DLC after so many other games releasing small tidbits here and there for the same or similar price. Where other games re-use assets like there is no tomorrow, From Software re-used very little and instead created entirely new enemies, bosses, and new weapons.

The Old Hunters takes players to a new "nightmare" area that reshapes the old locations of Central Yarnahm, The Cathedral District and a new location with the Fishing Hamlet. The new bosses offer a new frustratingly amazing experience to be had by adding multi-phased fights and new rewards alongside them. The new armor sets look very well done and add to the atmosphere of the Gothic Victorian horror setting. The best part of the DLC has to be the new weapons. Each one feels powerful and offers a new robust experience to any players fighting style.

While many players may find the re-use of the Central Yarnham and Cathedral Ward areas to be annoying, From Software has re-made the areas and changed the layouts where past experiences will not help you. You may notice the occasional land mark here and there but the enemy placement, lantern locations and item locations are entirely different. The areas look older and more of a hellscape than the aged city of Yarnham. The new old hunters that are placed in the area are even more tenacious than their counterparts in the base game and require a new approach to handle because of their new weapons and aggressive fighting style. There were times when I expected them to viceral attack me after forcing me into position but was instead I was surprised to find that they waited for me to get up and instill a false sense of security as I would attempt to strike and force me into a parry stance again but go for the kill the second time around.

The Old Hunters is a joy to play as much as it is a masochistic adventure that made me glad to come back to Bloodborne. For twenty dollars US it is a must have experience for anyone that owns the base game and enjoys products from From Software. It makes having a PS4 worth having and for PvP and PvE fans alike, adds new reasons to explore the city of Yarnahm and its nightmarish secrets.

This is completely unacceptable. I understand coming back and reloading once....but multiple times? This DLC is fun, in the beginning. It is undoubtedly very hard (compared to the main game) and sadly doesn't ad anything new in mechanics. This results in a frustrating but atmospheric expansion at the same time. But to be quite honest, as opposed to some people that state the boss fights are better than in the main game, I personally thought them less iconic and more repetitiv.

I think my main gripe is that if I look at the entire package--for example, if I had bought the complete game with DLC included and started my first play through from scratch--the DLC doesn't seem to fit in very well with everything else. It just felt very much like they tacked on a few extra levels with some very tough enemies and bosses for the sake of pushing DLC out. The weapons have a coolness factor to them, for sure, but ultimately they don't get the job done any better than the previous weapons, which makes them pretty useless as you progress. And the settings were almost entirely copies of settings from the main game that they tweaked and called the Hunter's Nightmare so they could produce "new" areas quickly and cheaply. I guess I was hoping for more considering it took 8 months for the DLC to come out and cost quite a bit for a DLC. Overall it was pretty good because I love the Bloodborne style of play, but relative to the rest of the game it's hard to give it a higher score than a 7/10. Expand

This is DLC done right, and for 15 bucks, it'll take you far. Much farther than most story add-ons these days.

The new environments are sprawling and beautifully designed on top of being downright treacherous. You get three new areas that are massive with much to uncover, and exploring these areas feels new and fresh, even for the seasoned hunter who knows the streets of Yharnam like the back of his hand.

The new weapons are a welcome addition, as well. The most eccentric of trick weapons are found here, from a double edged blade that splits into a sword and dagger to a curved sword that transforms into a bow to a massive mace that uses your own blood for spikes. More styles of play open up to you from the new weapons offered here. Additionally, new spell items are available, so arcane builds have something to rejoice about, too.

The new clothes will help you with your fashion even more, providing some sick new threads that's sure to impress any beastly monstrosity or malicious invader, because as we all know, armor is used only for Fashionborne.

The new bosses are... well, they'll stomp you. Make no mistake, this DLC presents the hardest challenge any hunter can face, even outside the bosses. Take them into account and you're in for a pretty tough slog. The bosses, however, as with all of From's masterworks, are eloquently designed to push you to your limits and test your meddle more than anything ever has before requiring you to be fast, aggressive and absolutely at your best, even moreso than the main game. They will test your patience, your skill, your wit and your perseverance more than any Soulsborne boss ever has before.

Despite just being DLC, The Old Hunters does indeed have a story of its own that's tied in with the main plot. It's as incomprehensible and convoluted as the rest of it, so as much as I'd like to give a summary, the proper words to describe it seem to elude me. What it is, though, is compelling and mysterious, and you'll want to delve deeper into its world and see it to its end just as much as anything else from the series. Just look up VaatiVidya or something, he'll know what the f*** that weird mumbling dude with the creepy hole skull was about.

Now for the nitpicks. Pretty big ones, at that, two of them. The NPC hunters in this DLC are absolutely ludicrous. Two particular encounters, to be precise. Though NPC hunters are all over in the DLC, these two encounters are particularly guilty of absolutely atrocious and unbalanced design. Ludicrous damage, infinite stamina, HP values bigger than a list of feminist's complaints. Just absolutely stupid and not fun to fight at all. Even NPCs should follow the rules the game sets, and these do NOT. They break the rules to an almost appalling degree and I absolutely hate them. The other, and everyone will know what I'm talking about, is the OTHER most unbalanced and ludicrous enemy in the game. The bipedal f***ing s*** whales in the Fishing Hamlet. What the flying flaming chicken mcnuggets was From THINKING when they designed this enemy? They're ludicrously overpowered, have a ridiculous moveset that can cross the entire map and stunlock you to death, and the ones with the anchors can go f*** themselves with it! They SUCK. EVERYONE hates them. And if you think you don't, trust me, you're mistaken. Those two points alone are so egregious that I'm taking a point off my score for the entire DLC. They're THAT bad.

Other than those stupid two points, the DLC is perfect. It's big, it's challenging, it's engaging, and it adds onto what is already a masterpiece. From really did outdo themselves with The Old Hunters.

Terrific game play, though can be too difficult sometime,
    Marvelous map design,
    Varied enemies and bosses,
Tens of weapons, several ways of fighting,
These all make it the best game I've ever played.

Excellent DLC, excellent and quite interesting locations, bosses are not worse, and many are even better than bosses of the main game. Wonderful musical accompaniment, which only cost the soundtrack in the battle with Lady Mary and Ludwig. Added a huge amount of new weapons, which makes the game even more diverse.
    Must have

Trust me when I say this DLC is undoubtedly one of the best DLC's in gaming-history. A true masterpiece in every way. If you love Bloodborne or the Souls-Series you will love this the most!

The DLC does add a lot of great weapons and items to the mix, but the best parts of Bloodborne for me were the initial levels that all make sense and connect to each other in meaningful ways. With the DLC taking place entirely in a dream, it bears more resemblance to the latter half of the game where the developers just start making everything gruesome and creepy.

    I did stick with it

I did stick with it and complete all of the levels and every boss, optional or not. So it's at least interesting enough for me to go that far with it.

Edit: I decided to change my review score after reading "The Paleblood Hunt" by Redgrave. That essay explains the lore of Bloodborne and should absolutely be required reading after finishing the game. So much of what seemed like nonsense in the game was actually a very intricate story.

DLC is quite good overall. Unfortunately, it was much too easy for me. But it is all my fault. I spent quite a lot of time exploring chalice dungeons and I got my hero pumped up to the level 225. With the most powerful gems and +10 weapon, I beat all bosses except one with first attempt. I would also beat the final boss with first attempt, but I was not prepared properly, I had 15 bloodDLC is quite good overall. Unfortunately, it was much too easy for me. But it is all my fault. With carefull exploration and curiosity of the secrets, It took me like 5 hours overall. I love Bloodborne but the love ends here, I never play any game twice. I am looking forward to Dark Souls 3 definitely. Good job From Software, please continue with the serie! Expand

I got into this game few years late and is regret not playing this at launch.

Everything you want in an action RPG is superbly represented in this game.
And if you think casual gamers would not like it because of the difficulty, they even catered to them by allowing you to summon up to 2 person to help you with boss fight.

This is an excellent DLC and I really loved the boss fights here (all but one the easiest one).

However I have to say that I really think this was way too short. I am wondering how some people can spend 15 hours to complete it. I think it took me roughly 6-8 hours to finish the whole DLC. And yes those were extremely fun 6-8 hours and especially Ludvik and Orphan of Kos were epic

Basically the only reason I am giving only 8 is the lenght of this DLC:

I've never seen a more exciting expansion for a game. This is easily the best DLC of 2015. Bloodborne was already my Game of the Year, and this DLC confirms it. Each one is more epic than the last, my personal favorite being the third boss. There are five total, including a secret one, which provides a lot of content for the $20 asking price.
In total, The Old Hunters is an excellent return to an already phenomenal game, and I hope to see more DLC soon.

Some insist that Souls’ and Bloodborne’s greatest quality is their sadistic difficulty. If so, The Old Hunters is hands down the best game by From Software. [02/2016, p.48]

Grueling, gruesome, but ungrudging, it expands on all that's great about the original. Marvelous. [Jan 2016, p.79]
