An unfortunate and unappreciated game, born at the wrong moment and compared with the wrong games is what I would describe Battleborn. Before I start this review, I will mention 2 things:

    1) If you like simple games, u won't like Battleborn
    2) if you like complex games, u may like Battleborn
EDIT: Not saying simple is bad. It all comes down to preferences.

You can still read this review if you've chosen nr.1 ofcourse. So let me start it now.

    The positives:

    - This game has a COOP story mode and PvP modes:
I personally like this, because you will have the choice to switch between brainless shooting AI's or go into a more competitive PvP mode. Sometimes, you want to do something brainless and sometimes you want to play competitively. In Battleborn, you have the option to do both, depending on the mood you are in.
EDIT: This isn't special at all, but some people think this is Pvp-only like alot of similiar games these days.

Negative: Story isn't really impressive, so this can be a negative for people who really likes story modes for the great story telling. Battleborn is a Pvp focussed game.

    - Personalize your own hero:
This is something I like. I like the option to make your own hero more unique to how you play it yourself. I won't go into too much detail, because you can write an essay about this. The game has a lvl-ing system similiar towards a MOBA. You level your hero during the match by killing mobs, building support/healing items or offensive turrets, killing other heroes or assisting heroes and it will reset when you start a new game. The reason why I like this is because you can accustom your hero to how you play or to how your opponents play.
You also have a loadout slot, which makes your hero even more personal. You equip 3 items earned from loot crates or the story missions and activate it by spending currencies you recieves during the match by breaking crystals or killing the enemies. A higher/stronger gear will cost more compared to a low tier gear, meaning you need to grind more currencies to activate it. So it's up to you to play slow at the start to gather currencies, pay less attention to the currencies and focus more on pushing the enemies or doing both.

    - It's not just killing opponet's heroes:
Beside killing opponents heroes, building support/healing/offensive items/weapons, recruiting mercenary, supporting heroes and preventing the enemies to have an high economy is also really important. Meaning, it's a complex game, because you need to focus on alot of things beside killing things, hence the next point is really important.

    - Teamplay is really important in this game:
Each heroes has their own specialty like: Attacker, defender, supporter and healer. So it's pretty important to pick the hero you're going to play this game, because you can't change your character during the game. This mean, if you pick an Attacker, you will always be an attacker. Hence the teamplay and communication is really important in this game. Also, beside the main rolls of each hero, it's also smart to have sub rolls like preventing enemies to get high economy, building alot of support/healing items or weapons, recruiting mercs. This is something I really enjoy, since I like these kind of games where you need to be tacticall.

    - Decent/long longevity(depending how you play and how much play the game):
This will be short, since it's pretty basic but good. You unlock different loots, skins, taunts, lores and heroes as you keep playing overall, with certain heroes or finishing certain challenges.

    - The support is great in this game:
The developers behind this game works pretty fast compared to the other games games. A new hero is already playable yesterday with the next hero already being revealed. Also, they fixxed the map pretty fast when people had unfair advantages.

    Negatives:
    - There aren't alot of interesting PvP modes in my opinion. I will just list the 3 modes and you can decide which sounds interesting and which not. I will only list my favorite to keep it short.
You will get 3 Pvp-modes in the game.
    1) Incursion: This is personally my favorite mode. Your objective is to take down the 2 sentries from the opponents while also defending your own 2 sentries. Alot of things happens in this mode and teamplay is really important here.
    2) Meltdown: Your objective is to escort your minions to their objective, while preventing the minions of the enemies to reach their objective.
    3) Capture: This is basicly the capture and control modes alot of games has.

    - The Pvp-modes doesn't have alot of maps:
You've 2 maps for each Pvp-mode. Meaning a total of 6(I can do math) , but you will play alot of the same maps each modes.

Overall, it's a good game with its issues. I hope you understand why I scored this an 8 and I hope this review will help you. In the end, it's up to you to decide and I hope you will enjoy this game if you're buying this or already enjoying it, but wanted to know other's opinion

A game that's under appreciated by alot of gamers for trying out something new. Being different and trying out something new and refreshing is risky and the creators of Borderlands sadly failed to attract alot of gamers. A game that's under appreciated by alot of gamers for trying out something new. Being different and trying out something new and refreshing is risky and the creators of Borderlands sadly failed to attract alot of gamers. One of the main reason is the game being compared to an other game (looks similiar to newcommers, but is totally different in reality) called Overwatch.

The game Battleborn is trying to blend First Person Shooter with MOBA's like SMITE and they did well in my opinion. The game has 25 characters(5 being free DLC characters) with each of the characters being different. The game offers COOP Story mode(Loot will carry over to PvP) and 3 PvP modes called:
    - Incursion: Destroy the 2 sentries from the opponents with your team, while defending your own.
    - Meltdown: Escort your minions to their objective, while preventing the opponent's minions to reach their objective
    - Capture: Typical capture and defend game mode alot of FPS has.

The reason why I like this game is because of the freedom in personalizing the hero you're playing combat-wise and the support of the developers. You've alot of freedom to personalize your own hero. Increasing the attributes of the heroes with different loadouts and changing their abilities during combat.
The support is also great with a DLC character already being play-able. Also they already changed the map lay-out, since some people played with unfair advantages.

I also like the complexity of this game compared to your other FPS. You need to incl. alot of different things like managing your economy, building turrents, buying gears, recruiting mercs, etc.

So to summarize it. Battleborn is underappreciate for what's trying to do and is being compared with the wrong games. It's a complex game with freedom and great support. The complexity is something not everyone will like. So do you like a complex, yet fun First Person Shooter? If so, Battleborn will most likely be a game you would want to try out. If you know someone who has Battleborn, try it out with him/her by playing Coop story to feel if you like the settings, characters, etc.

The one thing that's nice with mixed reviews, is that Gearbox is adapting to the pressure. They've dropped the price (I paid $60, I'm not bitter) have performed numerous hotfixes, and have already released one character. I would like to see a better rank system and penalties for quitting.

If you're tired of the old chase around death match, this brings another level of co-op and intensity to the game due to all the different things you can do and being able to customize your character differently every match! The moba aspects aren't overwhelming at all unless you play the meltdown mode, where you follow minions to try and lead them to the other goal, or defend your goal. All in all though, it plays very easily, you just have actual goals instead of blind killing. Theres so much store and lore with an amazing raid-like campaign that I've already played through a good couple times! The characters are so interesting and you can unlock more of their backstory through completing certain challenges. It's been a blast and I highly recommend it. It's definitely more enjoyable with friends, but don't fear because it was super easy to make and add new friends due to the integrated steam friend list! Don't be afraid to dust off that mic and talk! The motto is fight together or die alone and they mean it! It's about playing your role right! Expand

I haven't had this much fun with a shooter in a long time. I really enjoy the wide variety of characters which really extends the replayability; getting tired of the game, learn a new character! The versus modes are where I spend most of my time. I queue solo, and although some matches can be a blow out, I find myself having fun even if my team loses.

It had a STUPID bar to the left with 1 radar for each player. Sooo the screen was so small and i could not read anything that was on the screen. for example when you level up, it is tiny texts that you HAVE to read in real time when your enemies almost have you killed. We played for 50 minutes and it was really late. I quit the mission and had not the slightest that it had not saved. I thought i would, because borderlands saves when you quit the game. But this game did not save. So i had to start from the beginning!! again!! I choose this time to play the first mission with 3 other strangers online with us. It was soo much fun! You have to rethink this game. it is not like borderlands at all. This is all about coop, helping and supporting and think what is best to do in the moment. This is not a ordinary shooter. The story mode is like an old Arcade game. you only have 5 lives through the missions, and if you die, you have to start over. I love it. I fixed the small text issue(moved the sofa closer the tv) Expand

I think in a couple months time, Battelborn will be a polished gem with a strong community of engaged players, but eh time will tell.

My only complaints are creature comforts, I'd love a training room mode, where I can try out new chars and builds, and I'd love a bot player when PC's disconnect, and a way to reset helixes in game, perhaps with shards. Other than that, I'm a happy customer and excited to keep playing!

The loot packages are a nice idea as well to upgrade your characters with plenty to choose from and the ability to sell items you wont use to get more.

The only reason this game isn't getting a 10 from me is the problem when there are more than normal 'enemies' the game has a sort of lag effect which I am sure will be fixed in the future.

So for full out fun, yet still competitive enough and some really interesting characters to choose from to keep us interested in replaying the game until all characters are fully maxed is something I haven't come across in a while.

The multiplayer is where the fun begins; Incursion, not my cup of tea but still enjoyed the crap out of it. I really liked the idea of being focused into one single lane that packed with action, rather than been underwhelmed by a few lanes that separates the combat. Meltdown is a blast to play, really cool idea and could be jumped with a lot of different tactics. didn't try the Capture yet, but it looks like King of the Hill from HOTH kind of thing, which is right up my ally.

Well balanced for the most part, just keep in mind it is centered around team play. The two maps a mode is a bit of a shame, but compared to other MOBAs that have only one map per mode it is actually doing well. A few glitches remain from the beta and that is the only reason it loses some points: can glitch on top of the map in incursion, some lines get needlessly repeated, some enemies in campaign become unable to be hit due to visual glitches. Other than that a great game. Expand

This problems are only because of the flooding of servers upon release, but they are still jarring none the less. I have complete confidence in Gearbox fixing these problems quickly, so don't let it deter you from experiencing the balls to the wall fun that this game has to offer. Expand

Innovative, but still harsh, gameplay. Passable campaign, but action-packed moment. PvP is not too punitive (even bad game gives you enough to enjoy great loot). The first of its genre. Imperfect, but surely a milestone with a unique design in term of graphic and gameplay.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. 10/10? I think that is a little absurd. Yes the multiplayer can be GREAT. I am a fan. I hit 40 in the beta to unlock Ghalt. They did an excellent job fusing genres and the product is actually pretty awesome. But 10/10 is pure fan-boy-ism. If you like Moba and you like FPS and you like the art direction - I definitely recommend!

Let's be honest and express some of the negatives. The gameplay isn't as good as OverWatch (or LawBreakers from what I've seen). Only 6 maps, and that's only 2 per mode..... which there are only 3 of. Many characters are similar. Progression can be slow unless you are winning every match and playing all night. Gear can make the game unbalanced. Some characters suck (TOBY). The in-match leveling system is neat but if we are being honest, once you find the perfect build - YOU ALWAYS PICK THE SAME.The list goes on and on. The game is polished but not enough imo. They did a commendable job while the main team is working on Borderlands 3 - which brings me to the campaign.

There is only 1 cut-scene in the game and that's at the very beginning and it's just a comic book (lazy). The intro to every map is a snippet from the first intro (lazy).
The game only has 8 missions. You read that correctly = 8. If you've played the beta you've already played 2 of them. So 6 missions + a prologue is what you get.
They are fun, but they are largely repetitive and it's mostly waves of enemies just thrown at you in hordes.
The design isn't stellar, definitely not in comparison to any other top tier fps campaign. It's pretty mindless but it can be fun with friends. The characters, the writing, and the humor are all first class. They make the game more compelling. It will make you laugh at times, the characters are engaging, and there is definitely fun to be had. But the way it's fragmented is AWFUL. Not only is every level locked. But when trying to play online co-op everyone votes for the level. So you can potentially do Mission 3 as your first mission. To make things even worse, if you run out of lives or what your protecting (escort, a reactor, etc) dies - you fail the mission, and you get booted to the main menu (think NightFall) but worse. You have NO option to retry, and you lose the group you were in. This is just HORRENDOUS. They should know better - this is bad game design from a fundamental and very basic level. If you ever do finish all 8 missions (never in order) you will never replay them again.
The meat and the bones on this game is the multiplayer which albeit fun - is pretty bare bones and you will grow tired by the time you unlock the last character.

OverWatch is so much better in every way. You can switch characters at any time, the gameplay is better, the team synergy is better, the graphics are better, the attention to detail is superior, double the maps and modes, no clones of characters, literally everything is better.

I love both games. I own every console. I am just saying 10/10 is too much.
The campaign is a 7-8 and the multiplayer is a 8-9. Hopefully they add more post launch,
Plus those coming from Borderlands - remember this is not an open world. You literally just sign up for missions. So they have actually regressed in that department.

Like someone else said = If 60 bucks is nothing to you - BUY THE GAME!
If you are tight for cash, I would redbox or gamefly unless you are absolutely DYING to play the game even after the beta.

    Overall = 8.5

The gameplay itself feels very much like Borderlands, although the art direction is less comic book and more Saturday morning cartoon. Anyone looking for top notch graphics will be dissatisfied but I personally enjoy cel shading, it reminds me of the ps2 era in HD. Single player is broken into multiple raids lasting a half hour to an hour, they feel fast and give a nice tutorial for characters and their skill trees which reset adter a match. Pvp is a mixed bag for me, it can either be mildly fun in short bursts or very frustrating due to varying skill levels of randoms in matchmaking. The maps are also very dull, lacking verticality or multiple lanes, theyre mostly very linear and small with little breathing room for exaping ganks. This is disappointing compared to the large open campaign maps. The game really feels like a mixed bag and ultimately will most likely be overshadowed in the coming months by Blizzards Overwatch and Epic games Paragon. But I personally enjoy it for what its worth and will be playing jt at my own leisure. Be warned though, unless you are a big Gearbox fan, rent it or wait for a sale, its hard to say it will be worth $60 for many. Expand

I should note that this review is coming from someone who played the Technical Test AND the Open Beta, so I've been in this boat for a while now.

That being said, Battleborn is just a blast for those looking for a relatively light hearted, and yet still indepth, and potentially competitive twist to the usual FPS drudgery. Made by the crew from Gearbox, who made the relatively well known and liked Borderlands series, Battleborn feels like a distillation of all the things that made Borderlands fun, and a couple things tossed in. Some ideas work, others don't, some will work from player to player, while others fall flat on all fronts.

At its core, Battleborn is a teamwork focused FPS. Many people try to point out that when a character is melee focused, or due to its different objectives, it doesn't fall under that label, but if you play it you see it is. In it, you can play Story mode, available as a Solo mode, in private parties with a group of up to five people total, or with public matchmaking, or Versus mode, with three different modes and a couple maps for each mode. Admittedly, with only eight story missions, and three game modes, this doesn't sound like a lot, but if you're anything like me, you'll be playing through some of these missions, trying to beat your best scores, and trying to unlock new characters.

And THAT is where this game really shines, the characters. At release, the game has 25 different characters, 5 for each of the in game factions. Each character has their own moves, their own weapons, skills, and perhaps most important of all, their own personality. You start with a handful unlocked, but as you play, you unlock more. The game doesn't tease you with it either, it tells you straight out what you need to do to unlock them. This doesn't take anything away though, as some of those tasks are crushingly difficult. Of course, you could just play naturally, rank up, and unlock them that way.

Ultimately, Battleborn is a fun game. It is more enjoyable with friends whom you can cooperate and communicate with, but even in public matchmaking, it can be very enjoyable. It has its flaws, some glitches here and there, and most characters will not be for everyone, but if you're looking for an enjoyable branch from the norm, give Battleborn a try.

P.S. Do not let the fact that his game has a T rating fool you, it is full of the humor you'd expect from a Gearbox game.

If you buy the game expecting Overwatch, Borderlands, or anything else, you're going to have a bad time. This is honestly one of the most unique and compelling games I have played in the last decade. It has an appealing blend of unique gameplay and characters that keep me coming back.
Those complaining about the graphics simply don't understand the art style.
I will admit that the game may have some minor issues at the moment, but what you need to understand is that this is a LIVING game. Weekly hotfixes, monthly patches, and free DLC's being released regularly with new games modes and characters.
Albeit the game is discouraging to new users with the lack of proper tutorials and guidance, but the devs are very involved with the community forums and are working to constantly make the game more fun.
Best advice I can give you is hang in there! If you find yourself lost constantly or struggling to accomplish anything online, simply youtube or visit /r/battleborn on Reddit and learn a little more about the game. Also, finding the right hero to main may be part of the issue. It's all about finding someone you just click with and suits your personal play style.

TL;DR - Don't be discouraged. There's a hero and game mode for everyone, and if something isn't clicking with you try to research the game a little more. Once you have the hang of it, the game is truly fun and addicting. Happy hunting!

The storyline gameplay reminds me of WoW raids which is interesting although the storyline can suffer because of this, even with the three prequel episodes. Another thing which has made me excited about this game is the high interaction the developer team has had with the community both on the gearbox forums and reddit, they work on weekly hotfixes and patches to help make the game best for the players, something I have not seen in many other games.

I really enjoying unlocking the Lore for each character, especially because you do that through completing specific challenges. The game modes are innovative variations of MOBA and FPS styles. The key word is "innovative", as you won't find this style of game mode with this type of gameplay anywhere else. I've already put in over 100 hours of gameplay, and haven't even begun to master more than about 4 characters. There is a lot of depth to each one, and that's where the PvE components greatly assist in learning and improving each character's skills and style. The game controls map perfectly to consoles, at least for the Xbox One. Finally, the characters and their comments, as well as the comments from NPCs in game, make me lol, even after 100 hours of play. Most recently I was working toward an achievement and had to play El Dragon for the first time. I was having a rough game trying to learn his moves, and after respawning and feeling somewhat frustrated, the character starts shouting his own name in a long, drawn-out, voice-cracking singing voice. It couldn't help but make me laugh and remind me not to take this game and this match too seriously.
This game is definitely worth your attention. The steepest barrier to gameplay is probably learning the MOBA-style patience of when to focus on objectives vs enemy players. If you can focus on learning not to simply suicide into the enemy team, you'll find matches to be much more intense and fun.
