    Simple combat, forgettable boss fights, and a reticent narrative--not to mention an overly vague map--are the only dampeners on what is an impressive sequel, despite never quite feeling like one. The unsuspected changes and additions are bold and mostly pay off, with consistently engaging and rewarding exploration that's propelled forward by an ambitious central mechanic. Axiom Verge 2 is a game that constantly evolves and delights, but just lacks the same bite as some of its contemporaries.

    Axiom Verge 2 impresses with its level design. Its complex structure supported by two parallel worlds accessible at all times will offer a major challenge to aficionados of metroidvania. Too bad that gameplay inaccuracies spoil the party and cause frustrating situations. Without this, this second episode could easily have risen to the level of its predecessor.

    Even as the story continued to hammer home the point that looking back can be a curse, its last couple of hours are very specific nostalgia trips that undercut that notion. Both mechanically and narratively, the ending was disappointing for how predictable it all felt. That Axiom Verge 2 so deftly parallels Metroid’s isolation and difficulty is its greatest strength, and it sets it apart in the Metroidvania genre. But that same rigid adherence is also a good reminder of why the wider genre has had to innovate. As alluring as nostalgia can be, at a certain point, it’s time to move forward.

    The games has great music, controls and its own visual flair, Thomas App once again created a world that is inviting to explore... However he managed to make the game less appealing compared to the first one by attempting to make it more "accessible", you have a choice between push over enemies or bullet sponge, you can bypass most bosses, etc. It breaks a game's soul when you can bypass those moments that should be high points when you finally figure out how to get past them.

    Maybe next time make an "explorer" mode for those who want to uncover the map without too much challenge and create a well balanced main experience for those who like a mid-tier challenge (like the first game by example)... or give serious rewards for defeating the bosses (they are not bosses if you can just walk by them).

    Thomas Happ has done it again. The first Axiom Verge game is an all-time favorite of mine, so I wasn’t quite sure how the sequel would live upThomas Happ has done it again. The first Axiom Verge game is an all-time favorite of mine, so I wasn’t quite sure how the sequel would live up to that standard. But boy howdy, does it deliver. The DNA of the original game is intact, but the sequel offers creative and surprising takes on an already fantastic formula. Everything here ups the ante in ways I couldn’t have expected; the music is even more lush and engaging, the environments more dynamic and striking, the story more engrossing, the controls and UI more fluid, the weapons and abilities more unique. This is a serious GOTY contender. Do not miss this, and play the first Axiom Verge if you haven’t already!… Full Review »
