Let's be clear: this is nowhere near the rushed mess that we got from 2018's Radical Heights. There's plenty of fun to be had here for the low, low price of free (or at least "free"). But it's also a really strange release from Respawn—as in, this is the first playable product they've released since Titanfall 2 in late 2016. (And it's apparently the only thing we'll see for a while, as the team has confirmed in interviews that there's no Titanfall 3 in the wings.) Just one map? Barely any new combat ideas? More originality and spark in its microtransaction store than its "TF2 but slower" gameplay? [Impressions]

It's compelling to see a top-tier developer make innovative game design tweaks that change what we've come to expect in the battle royale genre. We'll have to continue to play, but from my perspective, Apex Legends is off to a great start. [Early impressions]

Jeff, Brad, and Ben jump into Respawn's new free-to-play battle royale game.

Respawn essentially reinvented the wheel here, creating a system of communication that effectively negates the need for verbal comms. Competing shooters would do well to take note. [Early impressions]

My experience of playing Apex Legends is extremely positive. This is an exciting, well-crafted game, from a company that understands shooters and is clearly qualified to enter the battle royale fray. [Impressions]

Guns feel great to shoot and Titanfall's movement system carries over to a point. It's a cohesive free-to-play title that has its heart in the right place. With a Battle Pass to come and a seemingly fair microtransaction economy to power it, Apex Legends has all the means to be a game we hear about consistently for the years to come.

Is it a Fortnite killer? Probably not. But as battle royales continue to be de rigeur, the challenge is to offer fascinating twists on the template. In that objective, it is looking like mission complete. [First-Look review]

    Apex Legends is super fun.

With its excellent ping system and fun combat, Apex has had me pretty bloody gripped.

For more casual shooter fans, the kinds who are drawn to Splatoon and solo Fortnite, Apex Legends is just about perfect. Instead of hearing some stranger yell at you for going the wrong way, you hear an in-game character suggesting a new route. It makes a big difference, and it turns an often intimidating genre into something a lot more approachable.

Battle royale game = soulless disposable garbage.
I just hope this fad of battle royle games dies soon.

The game itself seems fine, though I am finding it impossible to enjoy it without a solo mode available. Being forced into teams sucks.

The only good battleroyale game out there that I enjoy, and it's free! The difference? well.. the emphasis here is on team (3 per squad)..The only good battleroyale game out there that I enjoy, and it's free! The difference? well.. the emphasis here is on team (3 per squad).. and even if you die from campers it's not as frustrating because you can still get respawned by your teammates at a beacon (and also revived). The hero abilities (smoke, health drone, and ultimates like artillery blasts, care package, etc) are a unique twist, but none of them are game changers, and quite frankly seemed a little bit uninspired. But I'm sure there will be more characters introduced down the line, (the grind does seem a little bit long to unlock hidden characters however). Titanfall mechanics and weapons, overwatch abilities and micro transaction system; and even a hint of borderlands loot system. When you get down to the nitty gritty of it, it's glorified team death match, but it's free so I ain't complaining, Full Review »
