Firstly, I am rating this game as an online multiplayer looter shooter. Not as a single player story based game, as that is not what it is, I’m not going to rate it as mass effect 4, as that isn’t what it is. This has more in common with a game like Diablo than it does a classic Bioware story based single player adventure. I will be giving my honest opinion from playing the game over this weekend, around 12 hours and I will amend should my opinion change further in.i

Firstly, the presentation of this game is great, the feel of movement, flight, combat are all strong and although I suspect built on the building blocks of ME’s third person shooting but a fair bit tighter. The setting is large, sprawling, beautiful and interesting. This large scale area can be a bit empty, but there are rare chests, hidden areas of interest, codex entries and lore for places of interest should that be something you want to delve into.

The player hub which is a town to pick up missions talk to NPC’s to get some more info on the world and access your javelin to customise it and equip different skills, weapons or buffs which are all loot picked up from enemy drops or chests found dropped from completed events. One thing I found jarring from this is playing a mission with friends, you all go back to town, talk to people, amend your loadout watch a cutscene, but your squad may all be at different parts of the story, meaning there can be a lot of waiting, and whilst the plot interests me and the conversations I want to be engaged in I do find myself distracted worrying about holding up my friends while they wait for me. But the town is where you find the story and interesting characters you may expect from single player bioware titles but much in simpler form mainly because this isn’t an epic single player bioware game but a looter shooter with bioware flavour. This shouldn’t surprise anyone.

The game is really fun to play, the loot is varied and interesting a good number of skills to interchange and combo with eachother, components to boost damage types, weapon types, and all gear including weapons can bolster your skills too so with some gear some great combinations can be equipped to suit your build or compliment your allies abilities. Which for me is enough to say that this game is enjoyable, it’s fun to play and I truly believe I will be playing it for some time.

One criticism I do have from playing is the mission types seem similar, it’s fight several waves of enemies, guard an area for a time/pick up objects nearby and collect them together, defeat a boss. Mission complete, this is also similar in free roam with the random events so it’s not very imaginative. But the core gameplay is fun, and the bosses are interesting so far, so that doesn’t bother me much.

In Summary, I do not think this is a 10, but I know this is not a 0, this is a 7-8 in my opinion with the potential to grow with its evolving world and planned free additional content. I am basing my opinion on my enjoyment of the game and not out of nostalgic loyalty to Bioware, politics or a general dislike of EA. Some pro’s and con’s.

    Pros
Beautiful local with points of interest to explore.
Tight and challenging combat that encourages teamwork.
A decent loot system including skills as loot.
Interesting Javelins that play and feel different.
A good fun multiplayer looter shooter.
Town parts and conversations are interesting and a bioware seasoning upon this different style game

    Cons
Town conversations cutscenes make multiplayer awkward at times.
Not good variation of mission types, only 3-4 formulas that are repeated

Rewarding this an 8 on light of the above comments and based on my own experience of the game. I will edit this once further in should the above change as I progress.

In conclusion: Good space cowboy parkour shooter with nice visuals. If that strikes your fancy you should get it.

This game does lack an end game, has good amount of bugs, doesn't have everything available for purchase in the shop from the get go, has a loot problem at the moment but is being looked into, sound bug, and buggy quick play with broken missions. But you cant ignore the other qualities this game has. The combat is really fun where the guns feel pretty balanced, all four javelins feel and play completely differently from each other as well as all fun to play, story has interesting lore, graphics are fantastic, and a good amount of other great things.
This is one game I can say I really enjoy to mess around in while not all the time but it is a title I would enjoy getting back into playing every especially after every update. I also love making new builds for every javelin which adds onto things to do in the game rather than have to have endgame constantly.

It’s certainly not the second coming of Mass Effect 2, but it’s addictive.

Pros: it’s an Iron Man simulator. All four javelins have vastly different play styles. Only the ranger feels like a “shooter” style game. Story was great. Certainly has the BioWare quality cast of characters. Looter mechanics are much more similar to Diablo than Destiny. Flight mechanics have been nailed.

DO: Start playing Anthem if you enjoy games based around loot grinds and pushing powerful and higher quality combinations of gear and weapons into higher tier difficulties. If you've played and found interest in games like Diablo 3 the gear/build structure in Anthem, while not as deep a pool yet, draws quite close and can easily grow to encompass a wide variety of play styles even within the 4 Javelin lineup currently in place.

This, in combination with a beautifully crafted world to fly around in, and a story that could have been much worse comparatively, makes for a better launch experience than most games in this category that I've come across. The potential is there and I am looking forward to seeing the game grow.

Action and motion feels good, a lot of the abilities are fun and feel solid. I'd definitely say this is more enjoyable with friends than alone, however.

    1) Gameplay: Anthem > Destiny 2 because in Anthem you can use your abilities more often. Combat is more dynamic, user has to decide more often which ability is used when on which enemy. 2) Story: Anthem > Destiny 2. Both game's stories are standard: Something powerful (traveleranthem) is there, 2 fractions want to use its powers. But: Destiny story presentation is just bad. Anthem has many (skip able) dialogs, nice cut scenes and the story makes a bit more sense to me.

    3) Graphics: Anthem > Destiny 2. Well, ... its just as it is.

I don't think that Anthem is a masterpiece. Its a solid game. Any player who likes destiny 2 PvE should try Anthem. Players who don't like the looter-shooter-genre: just don't buy anthem (or destiny 2).

Destiny 2 was a boring game without any endgame content because the whole content was too easy. You don't need any high level gear for anything. Strikes are not a challenge at all. And the raids are just boring because it's all about learning mechanics, not about skill, timing,...! But destiny was ..."ok".

Anthem is a great PvE experience for those, who like Warframe, Destiny 2 and similar games.

If you like PvP: Don't buy anthem!

About loading times: I have a normal Ps4Pro with the standard HDD using day1 patch. Loading times are pretty short. Got many other games with longer loading times (Destiny 2 for example...!)

And unlike a lot of co-op games, we're not leaving each other behind by playing alone--everything scales and we can join each other's missions and freeplay sessions and help each other out. It is a glaring omission that there are no non-voice communication options beyond a couple of emotes--but BW has already made updates that *have improved* the game (being on PS4 w/out early access, I'm seeing a huge improvement from the Demo weekends to release and am really encouraged by the improvements). Is it a finished game? Probably not, but it has so much potential, and wasn't Destiny a disappointment when it first released too? And you have to pay out the ass for every xpack. This doesn't seem to be the case with Anthem... you can choose to get vanity items or not and it doesn't detract from the gameplay. My big fear is that they'll give up on this game like they did Andromeda--which was also hugely improved after release, and knowing no single player xpacks were coming for that just sucked my motivation out of wanting to finish it. Anthem's combat and mechanics are a lot of fun to play, co-op has a lot of potential (contextual communication wheel ala Fortnite maybe?) and I've even had a good time teaming up with rando's to defeat Titans in freeplay. I'm not giving up on it. Expand

I really enjoy the mechanics, the gameplay and there is lore and background info if you look for it. I played vanilla destiny and frankly, this is much better than when Destiny launched. I think people's problem with it is that it was not what they were expecting when they heard "Bioware" and then tried to explain it as "Destiny with bioware choices". I played vanilla destiny and frankly, this is much better than when Destiny launched. I think people's problem with it is that it was not what they were expecting when they heard "Bioware" and then tried to explain it as "Destiny with bioware choices". I am playing on a PS4 Pro and I am only a few hours in but honestly, I am having a blast and other than one instance of enemies popping in, I have had no problems.

I don't have the time to play the game for multiple hours every day so honestly, I think the content and the planned schedule that the game has will be fine for me. I am having fun with it and I can't wait to play more.

I also wouldn't call this game a shooter, and so to compare it to more traditional shooters like Destiny isn't a fair comparison. Yes, you do use guns, and yes you are shooting but the combat is about a whole lot more than just shooting. Positioning, using skills, movement, these are the things that make Anthem's combat great and different. Since I am playing on PS4 Pro I like the controls but honestly, I don't know how anyone could play this via mouse and keyboard.

Overall, I like the idea of the lore being found via cortex and optional conversations. Is it an in-depth player-choice driven Bioware single-player game like Dragon Age or Mass Effect? No. Is that necessarily a bad thing? No. Look, if you just want to quickly jump from mission to mission with just short conversations in-between, you can! If you want to look for all the optional logs and information to flesh out the world, you can but you have to read about it. Which, quite frankly, was what original Mass Effect did and I loved it.

Are all the decision in this game perfect? no. The load times are mildly irritating but not horrible on my PS4 Pro and does it take longer to go from mission to mission because you have to load back, talk to someone and then go back out again? Yeah, but that just gives me an opportunity to slow down and enjoy the atmosphere, grab a beverage, and then go back in. I personally like these decisions and as someone who isn't trying to simply rush to the end-game, I like the forced slower pace.

Overall, I think Anthem tried to combine so many different things together that it didn't fit into the traditional molds of what a bioware game is, or a loot-driven game, or a shooter and so a lot of people got upset. I play Anthem for what it is and I think it is great now and will get better in time. If you disagree, that's fine, that's your opinion. My opinion? 8/10

There are bugs for sure. 99% of which I can deal with, the servers STILL being sketchy bothers me (please fix this BioWare). The main story is pretty run of the mill, good guys trying to stop bad guys from having unstoppable power (what rpg/action game/looter shooter doesn’t boil down to that) and isn’t anything to really write home about. I personally however have enjoyed the side characters and MANY conversations you can have in Fort Tarsis and learning about them. MINOR SPOILER ALERT Like the old lady who’s son is dead but she is still waiting for him and you can either tell her the truth or play along to make her feel better. The game play is VERY fast paced and I will admit sometimes there is too much happening on the screen (I’ll be investing in eye drops). The shooting feels solid and the abilities look amazing. The flying handles well and just feels right, which is another one of the stronger points of the game. Overall if you want a game with fun and fast action, with a decent run of the mill story that offers some interesting and sometimes deep side characters Anthem is worth the pick up but I’d pass on the Legion of Dawn version. Learning the culture and history of this new IP is very interesting. Several memorable characters-- my favorites so far are the gossiping Neeson, and the Arcanist Matthias.

Freeplay mode is decent, world events spawn as you fly over or near, adding to the sense that you are on patrol and responding to emergent threats. But, unless you are pre-grouped with friends, you feel disconnected to the other three players in the shared space.

    Visually stunning game world.

Planned future content is a boon here, as we are just in the beginning of Act one of three announced. I look forward to what the future holds for acts two and three (presumably covering at least year 1 of Anthem), and hope EA/Bioware give Anthem time grow.

However, as noted by others: solo story and group play don't mesh well here:load screens are annoying; and loot could use a fix (which is pending).

I'd suggest giving this game a try, it has flaws, but also strengths. Given time, Anthem can become a very solid title and franchise.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Anthem shows a lot of promise, but as it stand now (1 week out of launch), it's trying to use it great gameplay to hold up the other aspects that are lacking, such as mission/enemy variety and subdued narrative. The novelty will wear off and most players will be left with an empty game with untapped potential. This makes the support planned for the title all the more important. A variety of quality-of-life fixes, mission variety to encourage recurring players to keep completing challenges, and a strong, consistent dose of narrative expansions to keep the world front and center and not behind "codex" entries. This will ensure a strong and passionate community to capitalize on what Destiny was struggling with. This gameplay and this idea should not be squandered, because once things click, its a fulfilling and intense experience, and if the loot and lore reflects that gameplay, Bioware will have something truly special Expand

Anthem is not nearly as bad as people are making out. The controls are superb and are some of the best of any game I've ever played. Operating your javelin feels so smooth and enjoyable, so hats off for that. The gun play is also great and the guns feel balanced enough. Skills such as grenades and launchers are fun to utilize and change out for combos. The graphics are amazing and theAnthem is not nearly as bad as people are making out. The gun play is also great and the guns feel balanced enough. Skills such as grenades and launchers are fun to utilize and change out for combos. The graphics are amazing and the environment is one of the best I have ever seen this generation. Freely exploring this world in your own iron man type suit is absolutely amazing. Character models look good and the voice acting is on point, though I found myself not caring about the story at all. The loading times are obnoxiously long at times, and the customization of your javelin (appearance) is weak. Their are virtually no new helmets or other parts besides one or two. I was hoping for more customization besides simply changing colors. Missions can feel repetitive and fighting the same enemies over and over again can get boring. But I fought the same enemies over and over again in games like Zelda Breath of The Wild, Destiny 1 & 2, The Division, Far Cry, etc., so no big deal I suppose. Drops feel fine to me after the latest patch but prior they were weak. My biggest complaint is fire and getting hit by nothing. I will literally dodge attacks and they still connect somehow, and heaven forbid you get caught on fire. Fire will deplete your shields and health quickly, even if you are standing in knee high water. Overall this is a fun, but short game that they promise to add to for free with large team. Currently the game feels incomplete which is sad, but normal anymore. Expand

One of the best gameplay ever, great lore and graphics. Too many bugs at day one but BioWare is working hard to solve them and improve new content.

There’s an intriguing game buried somewhere in Anthem, lying broken beneath its loot and structural frustrations like chunks of fossilised dinosaur bone.

Even if I ignore all the bugs, glitches and disconnects I had, Anthem is still, by and large, a mediocre game. The lackluster story, loot system and gameplay make this game one to pass on. At least in its current state.

Though it’s one of best-looking titles on PS4, Anthem’s uninspired action and obsession with grindy tasks mean BioWare’s mechs aren’t on song. [Issue#160, p.83]
