Firstly, I am rating this game as an online multiplayer looter shooter. Not as a single player story based game, as that is not what it is, I’m not going to rate it as mass effect 4, as that isn’t what it is. This has more in common with a game like Diablo than it does a classic Bioware story based single player adventure. I will be giving my honest opinion from playing the game over this weekend, around 12 hours and I will amend should my opinion change further in.i

Firstly, the presentation of this game is great, the feel of movement, flight, combat are all strong and although I suspect built on the building blocks of ME’s third person shooting but a fair bit tighter. The setting is large, sprawling, beautiful and interesting. This large scale area can be a bit empty, but there are rare chests, hidden areas of interest, codex entries and lore for places of interest should that be something you want to delve into.

The player hub which is a town to pick up missions talk to NPC’s to get some more info on the world and access your javelin to customise it and equip different skills, weapons or buffs which are all loot picked up from enemy drops or chests found dropped from completed events. One thing I found jarring from this is playing a mission with friends, you all go back to town, talk to people, amend your loadout watch a cutscene, but your squad may all be at different parts of the story, meaning there can be a lot of waiting, and whilst the plot interests me and the conversations I want to be engaged in I do find myself distracted worrying about holding up my friends while they wait for me. But the town is where you find the story and interesting characters you may expect from single player bioware titles but much in simpler form mainly because this isn’t an epic single player bioware game but a looter shooter with bioware flavour. This shouldn’t surprise anyone.

The game is really fun to play, the loot is varied and interesting a good number of skills to interchange and combo with eachother, components to boost damage types, weapon types, and all gear including weapons can bolster your skills too so with some gear some great combinations can be equipped to suit your build or compliment your allies abilities. Which for me is enough to say that this game is enjoyable, it’s fun to play and I truly believe I will be playing it for some time.

One criticism I do have from playing is the mission types seem similar, it’s fight several waves of enemies, guard an area for a time/pick up objects nearby and collect them together, defeat a boss. Mission complete, this is also similar in free roam with the random events so it’s not very imaginative. But the core gameplay is fun, and the bosses are interesting so far, so that doesn’t bother me much.

In Summary, I do not think this is a 10, but I know this is not a 0, this is a 7-8 in my opinion with the potential to grow with its evolving world and planned free additional content. I am basing my opinion on my enjoyment of the game and not out of nostalgic loyalty to Bioware, politics or a general dislike of EA. Some pro’s and con’s.

    Pros
Beautiful local with points of interest to explore.
Tight and challenging combat that encourages teamwork.
A decent loot system including skills as loot.
Interesting Javelins that play and feel different.
A good fun multiplayer looter shooter.
Town parts and conversations are interesting and a bioware seasoning upon this different style game

    Cons
Town conversations cutscenes make multiplayer awkward at times.
Not good variation of mission types, only 3-4 formulas that are repeated

Rewarding this an 8 on light of the above comments and based on my own experience of the game. I will edit this once further in should the above change as I progress.

In conclusion: Good space cowboy parkour shooter with nice visuals. If that strikes your fancy you should get it.

This game does lack an end game, has good amount of bugs, doesn't have everything available for purchase in the shop from the get go, has a loot problem at the moment but is being looked into, sound bug, and buggy quick play with broken missions. But you cant ignore the other qualities this game has. The combat is really fun where the guns feel pretty balanced, all four javelins feel and play completely differently from each other as well as all fun to play, story has interesting lore, graphics are fantastic, and a good amount of other great things.
This is one game I can say I really enjoy to mess around in while not all the time but it is a title I would enjoy getting back into playing every especially after every update. I also love making new builds for every javelin which adds onto things to do in the game rather than have to have endgame constantly.

It’s certainly not the second coming of Mass Effect 2, but it’s addictive.

Pros: it’s an Iron Man simulator. All four javelins have vastly different play styles. Only the ranger feels like a “shooter” style game. Story was great. Certainly has the BioWare quality cast of characters. Looter mechanics are much more similar to Diablo than Destiny. Flight mechanics have been nailed.

DO: Start playing Anthem if you enjoy games based around loot grinds and pushing powerful and higher quality combinations of gear and weapons into higher tier difficulties. If you've played and found interest in games like Diablo 3 the gear/build structure in Anthem, while not as deep a pool yet, draws quite close and can easily grow to encompass a wide variety of play styles even within the 4 Javelin lineup currently in place.

This, in combination with a beautifully crafted world to fly around in, and a story that could have been much worse comparatively, makes for a better launch experience than most games in this category that I've come across. The potential is there and I am looking forward to seeing the game grow.

Action and motion feels good, a lot of the abilities are fun and feel solid. I'd definitely say this is more enjoyable with friends than alone, however.

    1) Gameplay: Anthem > Destiny 2 because in Anthem you can use your abilities more often. Combat is more dynamic, user has to decide more often which ability is used when on which enemy. 2) Story: Anthem > Destiny 2. Both game's stories are standard: Something powerful (traveleranthem) is there, 2 fractions want to use its powers. But: Destiny story presentation is just bad. Anthem has many (skip able) dialogs, nice cut scenes and the story makes a bit more sense to me.

    3) Graphics: Anthem > Destiny 2. Well, ... its just as it is.

I don't think that Anthem is a masterpiece. Its a solid game. Any player who likes destiny 2 PvE should try Anthem. Players who don't like the looter-shooter-genre: just don't buy anthem (or destiny 2).

Destiny 2 was a boring game without any endgame content because the whole content was too easy. You don't need any high level gear for anything. Strikes are not a challenge at all. And the raids are just boring because it's all about learning mechanics, not about skill, timing,...! But destiny was ..."ok".

Anthem is a great PvE experience for those, who like Warframe, Destiny 2 and similar games.

If you like PvP: Don't buy anthem!

About loading times: I have a normal Ps4Pro with the standard HDD using day1 patch. Loading times are pretty short. Got many other games with longer loading times (Destiny 2 for example...!)

And unlike a lot of co-op games, we're not leaving each other behind by playing alone--everything scales and we can join each other's missions and freeplay sessions and help each other out. It is a glaring omission that there are no non-voice communication options beyond a couple of emotes--but BW has already made updates that *have improved* the game (being on PS4 w/out early access, I'm seeing a huge improvement from the Demo weekends to release and am really encouraged by the improvements). Is it a finished game? Probably not, but it has so much potential, and wasn't Destiny a disappointment when it first released too? And you have to pay out the ass for every xpack. This doesn't seem to be the case with Anthem... you can choose to get vanity items or not and it doesn't detract from the gameplay. My big fear is that they'll give up on this game like they did Andromeda--which was also hugely improved after release, and knowing no single player xpacks were coming for that just sucked my motivation out of wanting to finish it. Anthem's combat and mechanics are a lot of fun to play, co-op has a lot of potential (contextual communication wheel ala Fortnite maybe?) and I've even had a good time teaming up with rando's to defeat Titans in freeplay. I'm not giving up on it. Expand

I really enjoy the mechanics, the gameplay and there is lore and background info if you look for it. I played vanilla destiny and frankly, this is much better than when Destiny launched. I think people's problem with it is that it was not what they were expecting when they heard "Bioware" and then tried to explain it as "Destiny with bioware choices". I played vanilla destiny and frankly, this is much better than when Destiny launched. I think people's problem with it is that it was not what they were expecting when they heard "Bioware" and then tried to explain it as "Destiny with bioware choices". I am playing on a PS4 Pro and I am only a few hours in but honestly, I am having a blast and other than one instance of enemies popping in, I have had no problems.

I don't have the time to play the game for multiple hours every day so honestly, I think the content and the planned schedule that the game has will be fine for me. I am having fun with it and I can't wait to play more.

I also wouldn't call this game a shooter, and so to compare it to more traditional shooters like Destiny isn't a fair comparison. Yes, you do use guns, and yes you are shooting but the combat is about a whole lot more than just shooting. Positioning, using skills, movement, these are the things that make Anthem's combat great and different. Since I am playing on PS4 Pro I like the controls but honestly, I don't know how anyone could play this via mouse and keyboard.

Overall, I like the idea of the lore being found via cortex and optional conversations. Is it an in-depth player-choice driven Bioware single-player game like Dragon Age or Mass Effect? No. Is that necessarily a bad thing? No. Look, if you just want to quickly jump from mission to mission with just short conversations in-between, you can! If you want to look for all the optional logs and information to flesh out the world, you can but you have to read about it. Which, quite frankly, was what original Mass Effect did and I loved it.

Are all the decision in this game perfect? no. The load times are mildly irritating but not horrible on my PS4 Pro and does it take longer to go from mission to mission because you have to load back, talk to someone and then go back out again? Yeah, but that just gives me an opportunity to slow down and enjoy the atmosphere, grab a beverage, and then go back in. I personally like these decisions and as someone who isn't trying to simply rush to the end-game, I like the forced slower pace.

Overall, I think Anthem tried to combine so many different things together that it didn't fit into the traditional molds of what a bioware game is, or a loot-driven game, or a shooter and so a lot of people got upset. I play Anthem for what it is and I think it is great now and will get better in time. If you disagree, that's fine, that's your opinion. My opinion? 8/10

There are bugs for sure. 99% of which I can deal with, the servers STILL being sketchy bothers me (please fix this BioWare). The main story is pretty run of the mill, good guys trying to stop bad guys from having unstoppable power (what rpg/action game/looter shooter doesn’t boil down to that) and isn’t anything to really write home about. I personally however have enjoyed the side characters and MANY conversations you can have in Fort Tarsis and learning about them. MINOR SPOILER ALERT Like the old lady who’s son is dead but she is still waiting for him and you can either tell her the truth or play along to make her feel better. The game play is VERY fast paced and I will admit sometimes there is too much happening on the screen (I’ll be investing in eye drops). The shooting feels solid and the abilities look amazing. The flying handles well and just feels right, which is another one of the stronger points of the game. Overall if you want a game with fun and fast action, with a decent run of the mill story that offers some interesting and sometimes deep side characters Anthem is worth the pick up but I’d pass on the Legion of Dawn version. Learning the culture and history of this new IP is very interesting. Several memorable characters-- my favorites so far are the gossiping Neeson, and the Arcanist Matthias.

Freeplay mode is decent, world events spawn as you fly over or near, adding to the sense that you are on patrol and responding to emergent threats. But, unless you are pre-grouped with friends, you feel disconnected to the other three players in the shared space.

    Visually stunning game world.

Planned future content is a boon here, as we are just in the beginning of Act one of three announced. I look forward to what the future holds for acts two and three (presumably covering at least year 1 of Anthem), and hope EA/Bioware give Anthem time grow.

However, as noted by others: solo story and group play don't mesh well here:load screens are annoying; and loot could use a fix (which is pending).

I'd suggest giving this game a try, it has flaws, but also strengths. Given time, Anthem can become a very solid title and franchise.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Anthem shows a lot of promise, but as it stand now (1 week out of launch), it's trying to use it great gameplay to hold up the other aspects that are lacking, such as mission/enemy variety and subdued narrative. The novelty will wear off and most players will be left with an empty game with untapped potential. This makes the support planned for the title all the more important. A variety of quality-of-life fixes, mission variety to encourage recurring players to keep completing challenges, and a strong, consistent dose of narrative expansions to keep the world front and center and not behind "codex" entries. This will ensure a strong and passionate community to capitalize on what Destiny was struggling with. This gameplay and this idea should not be squandered, because once things click, its a fulfilling and intense experience, and if the loot and lore reflects that gameplay, Bioware will have something truly special Expand

Anthem is not nearly as bad as people are making out. The controls are superb and are some of the best of any game I've ever played. Operating your javelin feels so smooth and enjoyable, so hats off for that. The gun play is also great and the guns feel balanced enough. The graphics are amazing and the environment is one of the best I have ever seen this generation. Freely exploring this world in your own iron man type suit is absolutely amazing. Character models look good and the voice acting is on point, though I found myself not caring about the story at all. The loading times are obnoxiously long at times, and the customization of your javelin (appearance) is weak. Their are virtually no new helmets or other parts besides one or two. I was hoping for more customization besides simply changing colors. Missions can feel repetitive and fighting the same enemies over and over again can get boring. But I fought the same enemies over and over again in games like Zelda Breath of The Wild, Destiny 1 & 2, The Division, Far Cry, etc., so no big deal I suppose. Drops feel fine to me after the latest patch but prior they were weak. My biggest complaint is fire and getting hit by nothing. I will literally dodge attacks and they still connect somehow, and heaven forbid you get caught on fire. Fire will deplete your shields and health quickly, even if you are standing in knee high water. Overall this is a fun, but short game that they promise to add to for free with large team. Currently the game feels incomplete which is sad, but normal anymore. Expand

The ridiculous number of negative reviews are a testament to the double standard we hold for our open world triple A titles. Anthem is a solid game. Is it a master piece? Titles like KH3 can breeze by with a bad plot, repetitive game-play, meh graphics, and horrific voice acting but games like Anthem are bombed because some random idiots get all worked up because it isn't perfection.

In short the bugs and glitches are minimal. The lore is interesting and well represented in the world around you. Flying around in a custom mech suit with your friends is a blast. Combat requires thought and the application of different strategies and skills. It can get repetitive for sure but no one has really reached end game yet and there is a lot of potential for depth there.

    - Edit. I have lowered my score some on this one and added a little context. The bugs have become problematic. I stand by my statement that the game has a solid core, fun game play, and unique premise but am willing to concede that the technical errors, especially this far in, are not really acceptable.

And with that said I'd like to point out the positive: the traversal part of the game is the best ever in a game. They auto-correct flight, auto-correct landing, every detail and polish in that part is beyond incredibly done! And the feeling of getting something great is amazing and really jumps up your strength. The environments, even not very varied, are amazing and believable. For now, it won't sustain your attention for longer than a few tens of hours, but if they keep going at it there's such a strong base that it has the potential to become of the best looter-shooters out there. Combat is where this game earns it's points, flying around and engaging numerous foes is a lot of fun, but there there could be more variation of weapons and skills

Customization is not as detailed as I'd like, it's mostly just color swap with 2 Armour sets per Javelin (1 of witch costs €10) so if they plan to add more they better make it more accessible.

Overall this game will be a GOTY candidate so long as the address

Andromeda.
The Division.

The game is completely different to Destiny and it’s made by Mass Effect developer BioWare and it damaged their reputation as a great developer for EA. Dont expect the same graphics from PC on the consoles. Still, its amazin how detailed the world of Anthem is... fly through cannons, water falls, dive into lakes, caves, its definitely beautiful.

Comparing the gameplay with Destiny and The Division, Anthem is MUCH MORE fun than those two, specially when you select harder dificulties later on. Its really challenging and teamplay is essencial.

Unfortunately, the major mechanics of the game are broken. The loot system seems quite unimpressive, even when you defeat hard stances (called fortress here), boring items, few weapons designs (even the same models with diferent stats... LAZY!). Before the launch, Bioware showed us tons of cosmetic appearances for us to choose and buy with in-game money or real money if you want. Where are those? Cosmetic shop is a JOKE! Not even woth spend time farming for those items.

Loading screens are also stupid! Imo, its look like they had problems during the production of Anthem, because there is 5 types of zones that needs loading every 10-20 minutes:

1 - NPC area (where you grab your quests, talk to NPC for missions and choose stupid dialogues that there is NONE repercussion in the game. Like, why they implemented it? Its useless..
2 - Lobby area. You can meet other random players here. A small garage with some short cut to grab contracts, use your vault, and etc... its basicaily Social area of Destiny 10x worse.
3 - FORGE. YES, you need a load screen to access your itens. Never seen this in my life... one thing is prevent switch equipments during a misson (im ok with that 100%). Other is a damn loading screen in and out of the inventory.
4 - Loading screen for world map.
5 - Loading screen for dungeons and sarcophagus rooms (yeah you know what im talking about LOL).

Map is almost useless. Cant ping, cant mark, no N/S/E/W, no world events mark, no nothing. Crap!

Imo, every one who is in doubt of grabbing this game should wait until the major patch coming in april or may, OR at least fix these issues that i mentioned.

Like i said, gameplay wise its the best loot shooter game in this generation, but all the other thing are poor.

I'm really struggling to understand how some reviewers are saying the story is confusing and vague.
If you take a few seconds to read the codex, it fills in any gaps you think are there.
Bioware nails the characters, and the story is clear as day. It is told via codex, numerous cutscenes and constantly via the banter between you and our cypher, and through the vast number of fleshed out NPC's.
Within the first 20 minutes the story hurls you into a clear narrative with fast paced action, and it continues to build from then on.
It feels that reviewers are throwing Bioware under the bus, much like IGN did with Borderlands VR.
I admit that the demo was terrible, and Bioware shouldn't have released an early build. I feel that many have reviewed it based on that, or are just wanting Bioware to fail for some childish reason.

Fort Tarsis feels like a living and breathing hub. Ignore what reviewers have said about it getting in the way of action. They seem to forget that the much loved Mass Effect did the exact same thing with the various ports you'd visit.
Whilst the forge gearing system can feel counterintuitive, it does makes sense. You equip yourself before heading out into battle. You character isn't going to be carrying 40 weapons to cycle through - so read your mission briefing and equip yourself accordingly. That's just common sense.
Something just doesn't feel right with the way this game has been handled by the community.
I started using the Interceptor, as its been lambasted as being the "worst". It ended-up being awesome and fun to play as, but I had to learn how to approach battles differently than I did with the Ranger. It felt completely different to me and when I unlocked the Storm, it felt like a whole new class (as it should), which made me reapproach my playstyle again to match its abilities and strengths.
This is an incredible game, and I am loving the characters and feel connected to its world much like I did with Mass Effect 1-2, and Dragon Age. The gameplay mechanics are solid and levels well designed.
If you are comparing it to Destiny for some reason, then you're wasting your time. It's completely different. Just go and play Destiny for that experience than comparing the two at every corner.
Bioware has given us a beautiful and chaotic world with compelling characters.
I'd highly recommend this title, and take caution when reading reviews from prominent websites.
Pros - gameplay, graphics, music, sound, characters, class differences
cons - teething issues with connectivity (experienced once in 20 hours of gameplay), load times (resolved) - now only takes a few seconds on PS4 Pro.

Don't expect a rich story or deep characters, expect fun content and good visuals. My rating of a six is based largely on the fact that I found this game to be next to unplayable on Xbox One. I upgraded to an Xbox One X and the experience is much better. I full expect there to be some future support for Anthem, the 'games as a service' model has worked very well for Ubi and I think we will see EA on that bandwagon as well with this title. Expand

They could have done so much more with this game and it leaves you wondering why there isn't more. Guess when you waste 6 years trying to make decisions and 1 actually putting the game together you get Anthem.

I played it, wanted to keep playing it but much like other botched rollouts that involve EA I have moved on till something happens or improves the game.

I skip most of the storyline which says a lot. The seamless transition that was promised in this world is actually full of loading screens. For a game in the making for 6 years it’s not good enough. Fed up with devs releasing unfinished games then working in them over time. Might as well wait a few years then buy the complete game at half the cost. As the weekend passed and Anthem was released global we saw a variety of things from the long awaited EA BioWare 2019 flagship title. Many of which were terribly disappointing; to say the least.

I think that however distasteful as it may be, the best thing to do is start with the bad. At least that way there will be the proverbial silver lining at the end; which thankfully there is.

I think that however distasteful as it may be, the best thing to do is start with the bad. At least that way there will be the proverbial silver lining at the end; which thankfully there is. Well; slightly.

With ridiculous loading screen times that, literally left room for some important tea and bathroom breaks, and more crashes than my Dad’s 8 year old desktop pc it can easily be labelled as a rocky start. With that said, it also raises questions about how much testing of the final product was done prior to release or if these issues were a result of the post-beta changes.

Other less serious issues included extremely short game ending times after a final boss defeats and lack of loot. Hanging on screens between instances, and many other niggling annoyances.

It really begs the question of what they were thinking when they decided to release the game at this stage, and with knowledge of the post-beta changes they’d made. However, this can be partially forgiven as recent comments from the Anthem camp have said they thought it could have benefited from a little more time. So they know things have gone a bit array and are looking to change them.

Thankfully, it seems that BioWare are learning from the failings of their competitors and were all over them like a dog on a bone churning out patch 1.03 in an attempt to fix many of the pressing issues; then whatever it didn’t fix, or seemingly made worse, they tried tackling in the quickly succeeding patch 1.04.

On the other side of the coin there were quite a few good points that have been noted by a vast number of players, which I have to agree with. Anthem, by far, has some of the most impressive environments gamers have seen thus far. Also, In spite of the lack of general storyline, the game is very much enjoyable to play and with some fine tuning could very well turn into a great game; even a brilliant one.

I think one of the main things that everyone, including myself, noted from this weekend‘s gaming was that, in spite of the over exaggerated claims otherwise, this was nowhere near as bad as the Fallout 76 disaster. And another thing is that EA BioWare have been especially quick to, and progressively, respond to players issues and feedback. We'll see how it goes, but for now It's a middle of the road rating from me. Good ideas, great look; bad execution.

2 things this game does very well:

    The music is very good.

The characters are great, well acted, and interesting.

The story is a real let down, it feels unfinished anti-climatic, dull.

The flying feels great, but it's extremely limited flight time is a real irritation for no apparent reason.

The combat/ abilities are good, each javelin feels unique and useful.

The loot is boring, doesn't seem to matter much, an absolute death knell for this kind of game, how do you screw that up? Definitely something they can fix though.

The voice chat is very poor and doesn't seem like anyone even tries to use it anymore, there is no written chat, this game feels very much like you are playing alone, not a good thing for this kind of game, this game is hurt by it's poorly functioning online features and offers no benefit in return. Bad bad bad.

I can see this game turning into something great once it's finished, but it's certainly not there yet.

If you try join friends whatever mission the loading screen appear again, again, again and when you least expect it Anthem crashs. Even now, weeks after launch, I am still experiencing an unacceptable number of technical bugs. From the scores and from the potentially poor sales numbers the game is receiving, people have had it with games being launched in a state that would make the word Alpha blush. I don't care how ambitious your game is, I don't care what road bumps came up during development; it is unethical and simply bad business practice to release a game that is not ready. If the game isn't ready THEN DON'T RELEASE IT. Simple. Why I seem frustrated is because this game at it's core is very fun and very addictive. It had the chance to be a great looter shooter with a robust gameplay loop. Instead the developers have decided to keep dicking around with the player base and keep the loot economy crippled, despite everyone's incessant call for loot changes, Bioware had decided that they know best, and their game will fail for it. Bioware doesn't have the luxury of debating game direction with their fans. They are lucky to still have any at all. I would say simply that unless you are a die-hard looter shooter fan like me, steer clear of this title. If you want a looter shooter fill then maybe try out Division 2. Which no matter how fun the game is when you see these stories coming out it will be in the back of your mind. That being said I still had a bunch of fun when it came down to it.

Anthem has one of those ancients created old technology and we must stop baddy from accessing it. For some reason almost all Sci-fi games fall on this trope and I am not sure why. Regardless I was still enjoying the story. While your character never is more than a cypher that CAN TALK they never are more than a snarky badass. Your AI mission helpers/quest givers are full of personality and fun. I did enjoy the talking bits much more than I thought I would. Unlike Destiny, which this game is ripping off partly. They explain the plot right there not once did I wonder why I was doing anything, or why I was killing these villains. Yet again unlike Destiny they have multiple cutscenes that function like little exposition movies that are beautiful and entertaining to watch.

Speaking of beautiful this game looks amazing. I was in awe by the scope and look of each plant and explosion. The gameplay is if you were Iron Man on a distant planet blowing aliens to pieces. It is a third person action game with a dash of RPG in the mix. Of course it has loot drops for better weapons and you can play raids with friends, or even the story missions. What I adore was the fact that I could just play the story missions solo and not feel like I was being forced to play online. At least Bioware had the good sense to let me play their games how I want and not how EA wants.

Overall the game is a lot of fun, and with friends I could see the replay value through the roof. Yet if you’re me I don’t see myself going through this story more than once. It is more fleshed out then say Destiny is, but nowhere near how any other Bioware game typically is. I would say this game would be a great RENTAL. Play it over the weekend and send it back to Gamefly/Redbox you won’t be disappointed with it.

I have just started playing Anthem, and in my opinion, it had a decent concept, beautiful visuals and nice mechanics. However the final product of this game was not well executed, whenever I try to move, jump, dash or fly, it teleports me back to where i was a few seconds ago. Sometimes I cannot shoot my weapon, and what annoys me most is that it forces me back into the menu, saying that II have just started playing Anthem, and in my opinion, it had a decent concept, beautiful visuals and nice mechanics. Because of this I am forced to do the entire mission again from the very beginning, and the teleporting/latency does not help.

Like what many others have said, this game had so much potential, but that potential was not used, and the bugs that Bioware could not be bothered to fix ruins this game. If another update was to be released and this game was to be a fixed, good game, then my rating would be higher.

But it's so brutal for solo play. A word of warning to anyone with kids, significant others, or jobs that require you to be on call all day: if you are inactive for 5 minutes, you will be booted out of your game. You will have to return to that mission and redo the ENTIRE MISSION.

There's no real pause button, you will still get booted after 5 minutes. Same deal with putting your console in rest mode. Oh and Playstation Plus is necessary even if you never intend to play with other people. I did my research so I knew that going in, but it's counterintuitive so I want to let people know.

I get these limitations for multiplayer, but applying them to solo as well is so absurd and seems like it'd be a simple, obvious fix.

Gameplay is a blast - it's a great Iron Man simulator. If you can deal with the issues, it's a lot of fun, especially since you can now find it for $15-$30. But I find the solo limitations so frustrating that I keep leaving the game, and I may never finish it.

The best way I can describe Anthem as a video game is that it really isn't one. It's a truly barebones experience by all standards that I had little to no enjoyment playing whatsoever. Hating on this game is popular, but I actually played a significant amount it and can safely say that every criticism you've likely heard about it is absolutely true.

For starters, the story is a mess that doesn't make much sense. Nothing is really ever expanded on, nor is a cohesive narrative or game world ever present at any point. Something about the Anthem of Creation and cataclysms and invaders, etc. The characters are also lacking in depth and personality. They all, including the protagonist, desperately try to be funny but rarely if ever achieve that goal. Dialogue options make a compulsory appearance, but it has absolutely no effect on the conversations at all and only serves to waste your time.

You get quests at an empty, lifeless hub world that you have to slowly travel in first-person for some reason. This is where you talk to people who aren't interesting about things you don't care about and take on missions that aren't fun. It honestly serves as a buffer to the gameplay, especially with the gargantuan load times you suffer in transition.

Speaking of gameplay, it isn't very fun. Missions are, as I said, barebones. If you've ever played a patrol mission in the Destiny series, picture those as every mission, main or side, in the entire game. You have essentially 3 options: Fly to place and kill things, fly to place and defend static area while killing things, or fly to place and kill things while collecting materials they drop. That's literally it. That's every mission in the game. Period.

And the gameplay itself gets old really quick. The novelty of piloting your Javelin suit evaporates within the first few hours. Turns out being Space Iron Man isn't fun when you have nothing to do. There are only a handful of enemy types in the entire game and only two different heavy miniboss enemies. You'll get very tired of killing the same giant shield-bearers over and over again. Combat also feels disjointed. Unlike other shooter-looters, enemies don't really react to getting shot. You more or less just fire at them until their health meter goes down then they drop dead. Games like Destiny and Warframe may be grindy, but at least they feel good to play. Anthem does not.

The loot in Anthem is likewise underwhelming. In fact, it feels completely inconsequential. One of the most important things about being a loot-driven game is to make it exciting to get better loot. All "loot" in Anthem looks pretty much the same, from weapons to Javelin parts. Really you're just combing though a post-mission menu equipping the thing with the highest number. There's no variety, excitement, or fun to the loot. In fact, the entire loot system feels like it was tacked on as an afterthought in order to extend player engagement.

Graphically, Anthem isn't great. The lush jungles look nice at first, but textures were always popping in at a distance and constantly reminding me of the broken nature of this game. I played on an original PS4 so maybe it looked better on a Pro, but I can only judge it based on how I experienced it. Also, that lush jungle is the environment for the entire game. Outside of some caves and ruins, there are no other biomes to speak of.

I will say that I did have some fun with the heavy Javelin type (Colossus I believe). It was fairly fun to to used my hulking frame to pound enemies into the dirt. I felt powerful and it was reasonably satisfying given the static overall feel of the combat. But that's as far as my enjoyment went.

Anthem is an early access game that was sold at a premium $60 price. It's an embarrassment to video games, an embarrassment to EA, and and embarrassment to Bioware. Apparently it was in the conception stage for 5 years and only actually worked on for a single year before being dumped out on us in the shape it was in. Not that it's improved much since launch. Bioware literally had to cancel the entire post-launch roadmap because they were unable to fix the game in a timely manner.

Some people are hoping for a Final Fantasy XIV-style rebirth, but I am not. FFXIV was led by a talented lead designer with a passionate team of of developers. Bioware has no creative direction or drive to fix anything in Anthem and it shows. At the time of this writing, it's been almost two years since launch and nothing has improved. Anthem will likely go down in history as a testament to mismanaged game development, corporate deceit, and the absolute failure of live-service games. And honestly, it deserves to do so.

this game is not a finished product, for those who claimed those bugs and issues will be fixed in the future, I suggest to others, buy it one year later and you will have less buggy game with half of the price

This is a great game. Realistically an 8 out of 10 but I'll leave a 10 to do a bit to counter the obvious hate train running over this game.. I've been playing all night and haven't become bored of it at all! It's not perfect but some people want this game to fail hard.

-Story mode so lacking they padded it out with grindy missions.

While customizing one of the 4 Javelins is entertaining for a little while, there's not enough there to justify a $60 purchase.

If you have Origin Premiere, go ahead, but wait for a patch and more content before diving in.

This game didn't have the elements I was waiting from the next-gen Bioware game.
My expectations we're to get next classic Bioware game, such as Neverwinter Nights, Dragon Age(s), early Mass Effect(s).
The game looks nice, the combat and motion is nice. Game itself is fast paced rumbling. I need more in-depth storytelling, reason to play (not just gearing and fancying up) and

Ok, so I was initially impressed by the admittedly very good forest-with-overgrown-ruins design of the play area. I picked up a mech and gradually learned how to use it at its best. Same with mech enhancements.
I spent months playing Warframe, which is just as grindy, but it offered so many different things to aim for that it kept me hooked. Here you'll probably have fun during the campaign, especially if you play with friends, but after that there is literally nothing. The missions are always the same, and more powerful enemies are simply the same enemies with higher stats. I didn't last one month.

What can be said about a game that is bricking PS4 consoles and is riddled with bugs and ridiculously long loading screens.

The gameplay is pretty good however that's bogged down by everything else. After every mission you are sent back to one of the most boring hubs i've seen in an online game. You will be given a choice of NPC's to go and speak to which will raise one of your factions

You will be given a choice of NPC's to go and speak to which will raise one of your factions scores slightly. Some of them are interesting to listen to while others ... not so much.

The story is okay'ish. It isn't anything superb but it worked for what it was and I enjoyed playing through it and then it happened. I hit end game.

I call it end game but there is barely anything to do and nothing that would keep my interest for long.

You have 3 strongholds, one of which you've been doing since rank 7 and one is just a repeat of the last mission, the epitome of lazy game design.

The gear drops, oh dear the loot drops. Once you hit ilevel 400 in hard and got some masterwork weapons it's time to hit grandmaster. Now with the 165% increase in mob health and damage and a huge 75ilevel for the next grandmaster rank I expected the gear drops to be higher level than hard mode.

    How very wrong I was.

Drops in hard mode are ilevel 36 and drops in grandmaster are ilevel 36 which the occasional legendary that has a bit of an increase. This takes grinding to a whole new level because at ilevel 400 you are barely useful in a fight. Your guns do minimal damage and your abilities will barely scratch anything. The ult from my colossus at that level didn't even knock the shields from a legendary mob with all 3 hits. Speaking of playing colossus at grandmaster, welcome to revival 101 because that's what you will spend most of your time doing while running around reviving those that play like it's still hard mode and think they can fight the same.

I can see why they slowed gear progression down, there is nothing else to the end game.

The story isn't long enough to drag out the game and end game isn't deep enough to warrant me playing it on a regular basis. There is only so many times I can see Tyrant Mines or The Heart of Rage before the sight of them bores me and i'm beyond bored of the first stronghold by this point.

Now it has come to light that Anthem is bricking PS4 consoles and Sony is offering full refunds to anyone that bought it digitally, no questions asked. Just mail Sony and it's done.

Sadly I got mine from Amazon so i'm stuck with a game I can't play because I daren't risk my console.

All in all it's an average game plagued with more problems than it's worth. I cannot recommend this game to anyone. It was released far too early and BioWare can't seem to fix the problems the game has. Current issues are quite serious but nothing.

One thing I see a lot is the game is fun with friends. Everything is fun with friends. I could sit and watch paint dry on a fence with my friends and still have a laugh. If a game isn't fun on it's own right and needs your friends to make it entertaining then it isn't worth your money.

I will oblige the combat mechanics were decent but it ends there, I would not suggest this game at any price over $10.

The future of gaming is single player story campaigns and fair and honest multiplayer. Sorry EA, but these cardboard app games are not the future of gaming your greedy hand wringing board of directors envisions.

I had so much hope that this game was going to be at least a great game and will make a comeback from a company which created the best narrative story game (Mass Effect 2) with fun gameplay and great voice acting and only half was achieved in Anthem. Whilst it does have smooth controls which is easy to understand, some of the best graphics I've seen this year so far, surprisingly great customization to your character and cutscenes with good facial animation, it doesn't live up to my standers. The story really disappointed me with repetitive gameplay and really REALLY long loading screens. Microtransaction, do I need to say more. It felt like the voice actor/actress for the NPC felt lazy and no passion. It's probably better playing with your friends but I had trouble actually getting in a game even if I have my PS Plus. These things really affect how I play this game and it's not an enjoyable experience. This game had a lot of hope to be great and this makes me feel worried about the future of Bioware Expand

Its not a 0 but it is definitely not a 10 either. Any review with either just disregard as fanboys or EA haters. The game's mechanics are fine, flying is fun and its nice to see and play in the world. However as a game as a service, it has all the issues that come with it. Games not complete, its closer to a beta than a finished product, very little to do, the hub is lifeless, story isIts not a 0 but it is definitely not a 10 either. Missed opportunity. In short, it has potential but its not a $60 game right now and may not be for a good while.

    Pros
    1. Flying is fun
    2. The game has potential
    3. The world is beautiful
    4. Combat at least at first is a lot of fun

    Cons
    1. Shallow story
    2. Bugs galore
    3. The missions are extremely repetitive, lacking real variety
    4. In 2019, this many load screens and the long waits in them(even after the patch) is unacceptable
    5. Its a game as a service which means its not finished and as of right now theres not enough to do in the game. Essentially you're buying a promise from EA for continued support even if and most likely sales are lower than projected.
    6. Framerates do drop especially during combat.
    7. As much potential as this game has, its been rushed out whether by EA or Bioware or both. And it shows.
    8. Novelty of combat wears off quickly.
    9. Game needs better and different weapon types bc all feel and are about the same outside of damage. Also customized looks for the javelins would be great. Outside of the microtransactions ones i mean.
    10. 7 yrs in development to get this. I don't mean to sound biased but if it takes you this long to come out with a game that still belongs in beta imo, I worry absolutely about the state and depth of any dlc Bioware may come out with.

4/10 right now but it has a chance to get better but it's not worth $60 first day.

    5. At level 30, you still get common and uncommon gear drop which I don't understand why
    And many more!
Sure, there are good things about this game, especially the flying. The flying is the huge highlight of this game which is great, but to me that's the one of a few things that is good. The story itself is terrible and I got really bored through the story. It's sad that there's only 3 stronghold after completing the game and one of the stronghold is basically the final mission on repeat.
We have to wait until May (2 months) for the raid to drop and I'm sure by then most players that are still active will reach max level and get bored.
This game will definitely improve in the future, but as for now it's really glitchy and buggy. The flight is one of the reason why it boosted this game to a 4/10 instead of 1/10 or 2/10.
I'll probably still play this game down the road to see where it goes but right now it's a huge disappointment. Hopefully they improve and fix everything that is wrong about this game

There’s an intriguing game buried somewhere in Anthem, lying broken beneath its loot and structural frustrations like chunks of fossilised dinosaur bone.

Even if I ignore all the bugs, glitches and disconnects I had, Anthem is still, by and large, a mediocre game. The lackluster story, loot system and gameplay make this game one to pass on. At least in its current state.

Though it’s one of best-looking titles on PS4, Anthem’s uninspired action and obsession with grindy tasks mean BioWare’s mechs aren’t on song. [Issue#160, p.83]
