A boring, empty, soulless game, with no story, just a infinite grind through a jungle of bugs. Pun intended.

I hope they manage to fix this mess of a game, because the potential is there, it's so clear that this game could be amazing. But the truth is, little by little, I won't even bother playing EA games. Maybe this was the last one.

But if Anthem is already dead, then so is EA.

The best way I can describe Anthem as a video game is that it really isn't one. It's a truly barebones experience by all standards that I had little to no enjoyment playing whatsoever. Hating on this game is popular, but I actually played a significant amount it and can safely say that every criticism you've likely heard about it is absolutely true.

For starters, the story is a mess that doesn't make much sense. Nothing is really ever expanded on, nor is a cohesive narrative or game world ever present at any point. Something about the Anthem of Creation and cataclysms and invaders, etc. The characters are also lacking in depth and personality. They all, including the protagonist, desperately try to be funny but rarely if ever achieve that goal. Dialogue options make a compulsory appearance, but it has absolutely no effect on the conversations at all and only serves to waste your time.

You get quests at an empty, lifeless hub world that you have to slowly travel in first-person for some reason. This is where you talk to people who aren't interesting about things you don't care about and take on missions that aren't fun. It honestly serves as a buffer to the gameplay, especially with the gargantuan load times you suffer in transition.

Speaking of gameplay, it isn't very fun. Missions are, as I said, barebones. If you've ever played a patrol mission in the Destiny series, picture those as every mission, main or side, in the entire game. You have essentially 3 options: Fly to place and kill things, fly to place and defend static area while killing things, or fly to place and kill things while collecting materials they drop. That's literally it. That's every mission in the game. Period.

And the gameplay itself gets old really quick. The novelty of piloting your Javelin suit evaporates within the first few hours. Turns out being Space Iron Man isn't fun when you have nothing to do. There are only a handful of enemy types in the entire game and only two different heavy miniboss enemies. You'll get very tired of killing the same giant shield-bearers over and over again. Combat also feels disjointed. Unlike other shooter-looters, enemies don't really react to getting shot. You more or less just fire at them until their health meter goes down then they drop dead. Games like Destiny and Warframe may be grindy, but at least they feel good to play. Anthem does not.

The loot in Anthem is likewise underwhelming. In fact, it feels completely inconsequential. One of the most important things about being a loot-driven game is to make it exciting to get better loot. All "loot" in Anthem looks pretty much the same, from weapons to Javelin parts. Really you're just combing though a post-mission menu equipping the thing with the highest number. There's no variety, excitement, or fun to the loot. In fact, the entire loot system feels like it was tacked on as an afterthought in order to extend player engagement.

Graphically, Anthem isn't great. The lush jungles look nice at first, but textures were always popping in at a distance and constantly reminding me of the broken nature of this game. I played on an original PS4 so maybe it looked better on a Pro, but I can only judge it based on how I experienced it. Also, that lush jungle is the environment for the entire game. Outside of some caves and ruins, there are no other biomes to speak of.

I will say that I did have some fun with the heavy Javelin type (Colossus I believe). It was fairly fun to to used my hulking frame to pound enemies into the dirt. I felt powerful and it was reasonably satisfying given the static overall feel of the combat. But that's as far as my enjoyment went.

Anthem is an early access game that was sold at a premium $60 price. It's an embarrassment to video games, an embarrassment to EA, and and embarrassment to Bioware. Apparently it was in the conception stage for 5 years and only actually worked on for a single year before being dumped out on us in the shape it was in. Not that it's improved much since launch. Bioware literally had to cancel the entire post-launch roadmap because they were unable to fix the game in a timely manner.

Some people are hoping for a Final Fantasy XIV-style rebirth, but I am not. FFXIV was led by a talented lead designer with a passionate team of of developers. Bioware has no creative direction or drive to fix anything in Anthem and it shows. At the time of this writing, it's been almost two years since launch and nothing has improved. Anthem will likely go down in history as a testament to mismanaged game development, corporate deceit, and the absolute failure of live-service games. And honestly, it deserves to do so.

Same with mech enhancements.
I spent months playing Warframe, which is just as grindy, but it offered so many different things to aim for that it kept me hooked. Here you'll probably have fun during the campaign, especially if you play with friends, but after that there is literally nothing. The missions are always the same, and more powerful enemies are simply the same enemies with higher stats. I didn't last one month.

You will be given a choice of NPC's to go and speak to which will raise one of your factions scores slightly. Some of them are interesting to listen to while others ... not so much.

The story is okay'ish. It isn't anything superb but it worked for what it was and I enjoyed playing through it and then it happened. I hit end game.

I call it end game but there is barely anything to do and nothing that would keep my interest for long.

You have 3 strongholds, one of which you've been doing since rank 7 and one is just a repeat of the last mission, the epitome of lazy game design.

The gear drops, oh dear the loot drops. Once you hit ilevel 400 in hard and got some masterwork weapons it's time to hit grandmaster. Now with the 165% increase in mob health and damage and a huge 75ilevel for the next grandmaster rank I expected the gear drops to be higher level than hard mode.

    How very wrong I was.

Drops in hard mode are ilevel 36 and drops in grandmaster are ilevel 36 which the occasional legendary that has a bit of an increase. This takes grinding to a whole new level because at ilevel 400 you are barely useful in a fight. Your guns do minimal damage and your abilities will barely scratch anything. The ult from my colossus at that level didn't even knock the shields from a legendary mob with all 3 hits. Speaking of playing colossus at grandmaster, welcome to revival 101 because that's what you will spend most of your time doing while running around reviving those that play like it's still hard mode and think they can fight the same.

I can see why they slowed gear progression down, there is nothing else to the end game.

The story isn't long enough to drag out the game and end game isn't deep enough to warrant me playing it on a regular basis. There is only so many times I can see Tyrant Mines or The Heart of Rage before the sight of them bores me and i'm beyond bored of the first stronghold by this point.

Now it has come to light that Anthem is bricking PS4 consoles and Sony is offering full refunds to anyone that bought it digitally, no questions asked. Just mail Sony and it's done.

Sadly I got mine from Amazon so i'm stuck with a game I can't play because I daren't risk my console.

All in all it's an average game plagued with more problems than it's worth. I cannot recommend this game to anyone. It was released far too early and BioWare can't seem to fix the problems the game has. Current issues are quite serious but nothing.

One thing I see a lot is the game is fun with friends. Everything is fun with friends. I could sit and watch paint dry on a fence with my friends and still have a laugh. If a game isn't fun on it's own right and needs your friends to make it entertaining then it isn't worth your money.

The story really disappointed me with repetitive gameplay and really REALLY long loading screens. Microtransaction, do I need to say more. It felt like the voice actor/actress for the NPC felt lazy and no passion. It's probably better playing with your friends but I had trouble actually getting in a game even if I have my PS Plus. These things really affect how I play this game and it's not an enjoyable experience. This game had a lot of hope to be great and this makes me feel worried about the future of Bioware Expand

Missed opportunity. In short, it has potential but its not a $60 game right now and may not be for a good while.

    Pros
    1. Flying is fun
    2. The game has potential
    3. The world is beautiful
    4. Combat at least at first is a lot of fun

    Cons
    1. Shallow story
    2. Bugs galore
    3. The missions are extremely repetitive, lacking real variety
    4. In 2019, this many load screens and the long waits in them(even after the patch) is unacceptable
    5. Its a game as a service which means its not finished and as of right now theres not enough to do in the game. Essentially you're buying a promise from EA for continued support even if and most likely sales are lower than projected.
    6. Framerates do drop especially during combat.
    7. As much potential as this game has, its been rushed out whether by EA or Bioware or both. And it shows.
    8. Novelty of combat wears off quickly.
    9. Game needs better and different weapon types bc all feel and are about the same outside of damage. Also customized looks for the javelins would be great. Outside of the microtransactions ones i mean.
    10. 7 yrs in development to get this. I don't mean to sound biased but if it takes you this long to come out with a game that still belongs in beta imo, I worry absolutely about the state and depth of any dlc Bioware may come out with.

4/10 right now but it has a chance to get better but it's not worth $60 first day.

Sure, there are good things about this game, especially the flying. The flying is the huge highlight of this game which is great, but to me that's the one of a few things that is good. The story itself is terrible and I got really bored through the story. It's sad that there's only 3 stronghold after completing the game and one of the stronghold is basically the final mission on repeat.
We have to wait until May (2 months) for the raid to drop and I'm sure by then most players that are still active will reach max level and get bored.
This game will definitely improve in the future, but as for now it's really glitchy and buggy. The flight is one of the reason why it boosted this game to a 4/10 instead of 1/10 or 2/10.
I'll probably still play this game down the road to see where it goes but right now it's a huge disappointment. Hopefully they improve and fix everything that is wrong about this game

The main story is generic and not very interesting, with most players I speak to choosing to skip through conversations completely, as well as this, prepare to frequently cringe at NPC dialogue during missions and cutscenes, completely removing any sense of immersion or tension, and the ending will leave you more disappointed than most recent Star Wars movies.

Customization of your Javelin is one of the selling points of this game, giving you the ability to combine 6 elements across your character, including textures, patterns & colours, and while this is a refreshing change, armour pieces are currently locked behind a coin grind/paywall, with only 3 or 4 options currently available.

Flying is an interesting concept, although combat is nothing revolutionary, as you will eventually tire of using the same COMBO attacks and a small handful of Masterwork/Legendary weapons against the same enemy types, enemy AI actually improves at Grandmaster 1 difficulty, but once you have beaten this, it also becomes repetitive.

Due to a current shortage of End Game content, the game feels unfinished, and the above issues turn an otherwise good looking grinding experience into a chore, upcoming patches and free DLC's promise to fix these issues but at this point, your money will be better spent on any of the other current games coming out on the market.

Note: if you have nothing else to play, or have very LOW expectations, you will enjoy this game for a week or two like I have, anyone rating this game 0-3 / 6-10 is most likely a TROLL, do not be fooled, this game is at best an AVERAGE looter shooter, and at worst a BELOW AVERAGE title given it's competition.

Anthem is one of those games that try to please everybody but in the end pleases nobody. The story is convoluted in that once a part of the story is done, it snaps right into another part without a smooth transition. Another part of Anthem’s legacy is its bugs. Even 1 year after it’s released, it still has server errors that sometimes makes it impossible to get into the game. At times Anthem is enjoyable, it is just unfortunate that those times are few and far between.

Anthem is effectively a four-person, instanced; squad shooter. The bulk of the action takes place within instanced missions, or strongholds (dungeons). These can be fun, especially on higher difficulty levels; however the objectives consistently boil down to 1. Kill everything, 2. Fetch this, or

Anthem is effectively a four-person, instanced; squad shooter. The bulk of the action takes place within instanced missions, or strongholds (dungeons). These can be fun, especially on higher difficulty levels; however the objectives consistently boil down to 1. Kill everything, 2. Fetch this, or 3. Kill everything & fetch this. This is not uncommon, but other games in this genre try to present these objectives in an engaging way. In Anthem, they are presented lazily.

    This all gets tiresome quickly.

Yes - flying in a robotic suit, firing missiles, hitting combos; and shooting machine guns is fun.. but there is no real depth here.

There is little incentive to play at higher difficult levels other than for thechallenge. In other looter shooters you are rewarded by the increased chance of better gear or loot; that isn’t the case here.

The game is also disjointed. The menu layout is unintuitive, there are long load times, you have to return to Fort Tarsis (your base of operation) far too frequently, you cant swap equipment in-mission, sound stops and starts in big firefights, the javelin controls are a bit peculiar (there is no ascent option, you have to move forwards if you want to fly up; thus prepare to hit a lot of walls). I could go on. Basically, all of these frustrations pull you out of what could have been a good game.. if there was any game there to have. This is just a lot of interesting sci-fi shooter ideas, poorly executed.

There are some bizarre design choices. Fort Tarsis (your base of operation) is purely singleplayer. You have to actively travel to (load) a separate social area to engage with other players. Why not integrate the two ala Destiny?

Customisation is good, and there are a number of components, weapons, grenades etc.. which shows potential for customising a build. However, you are still effectively pigeon holed into a specific part of the class spectrum (Rogue: Interceptor, Mage: Storm, Tank: Gladiator, Generalist: Ranger).

All in all - this feels more like a demo than a fully fleshed out game. The fact that this was released at full price is shocking.

I give this game a 4 because it can be entertaining (and I only paid £5 for it), but it needs a complete re-work.

The game is missing a story line, or at least a connected story and objectives.
Too many pointless side talks for time wasting

Yikes. This was another blunder by Bioware. Very little content and mundane gameplay.

Anthem in some ways reminds me of death stranding. Everyone from the narators to the people that you meet in the game you just want them to shut up and go away the moment you meet them. The main guy that supposed to be the heroic brave guy is a little Gremlin looking guy that's just completely cringy and annoying. The wise wahmen are kust over the top.One thing death stranding did right is that this game didn't is things like progression and satisfying rewards for grinding. Death stranding was very addicting in the way that it progressed you through the game were as anthem gets boring very early on with a shallow progression and loot system. One positive about the game would be the visuals the world looks pretty but it's completely shallow and non interactive. Also controls and movement feel very satisfying for a little while until you realise that it's just the same thing over and over. I think the only way to salvage a game would to be completely redo the loop system for better weapons and better more interesting gear. And just completely cut the story and the characters out just have little Dark Souls hints about what's going on. Because I couldn't stand one more second of the people in this game or the horrible writing. Expand

There’s an intriguing game buried somewhere in Anthem, lying broken beneath its loot and structural frustrations like chunks of fossilised dinosaur bone.

Even if I ignore all the bugs, glitches and disconnects I had, Anthem is still, by and large, a mediocre game. The lackluster story, loot system and gameplay make this game one to pass on. At least in its current state.

Though it’s one of best-looking titles on PS4, Anthem’s uninspired action and obsession with grindy tasks mean BioWare’s mechs aren’t on song. [Issue#160, p.83]
