Quick review: What the creative director and team did was take a risk
Most would expect an action driven game like AC, but the team made something else
They took a risk and I believe the risk paid off. Ancestors is the most refreshing game I've had the pleasure of experiencing this year and I can't wait to play more and see what else this amazing studio brings to life.

This game is actually an 8 but I rated it a 10 because of the spaz that gave it a 0 due to quote 'its evolution propaganda'. Evolution is fact and this game is good but not perfect.

If you’ve been around long enough you know that assassins creed is my favorite gaming series of all time, so when I found at the the creator of my favorite series is making a new game, I couldn’t not play it.. so I hopped into ancestors with excitement and intrigue… excited to create a new lineage of primates, go through the struggles, the trials and tribulations of becoming human.. and after about 2 hours of monkeying around, I discovered that this experience just isn’t for me…
Ancestors The Humankind Odyssey is a survival game where you start as a male, female, or random character thrown into the jungle… and I actually got assassins creed vibes right from the jump.. with that classic bird opening, even as im climbing trees and swinging from vines.. this felt like the true assassins creed origins… but the longer I stayed in this world the more it furtrated me and the more it pushed me away….
I feel a bit tricked… the game opens with a little cutscene, youre given a mission to hide, and then go find yourself as a member of your little money tribe… I was kind of under the impression that this game was going to deliver a story, but it doesn’t… it goes from you have my attention to I have no idea what im supposed to be doing… and that’s kind of the point.. our ancestors didn’t know what theyre supposed to be doing either… they had to figure everything out.. so you set out to discover, find food, tools, landmarks…deal with predators, and use this gain knowledge to pass it onto a new generation, to evolve and advance your species… this is a game of discovery and survival.. and its this survival part that kills the game for me personally… I am not a survival fan at all… I’m not into dealing with injuries.. especially in a game with fairly clunky feeling mechanics… im not into finding water, finding food.. dealing with poison and cold, and sleep systems… not even a little bit… but even if I were.. these systems make you feel handcuffed… you feel restricted to exploration because your meters ae draining, and if you venture too far you risk hysteria which instantly pulls you back and respawns you.. like a glitch in the animous when you go beyond that blue wall the game doesn’t want you to see yet… which in turn kind of take away the mystery of the game, it takes away the feeling of exploration and just turns it into survival and discovery.. . which again just isn’t my kind of thing…
if you are into survival type games though, I do feel that ancestors offers a very unique experience.. this isn’t a bad game by any stretch of the imagination… its just one of those kind of games that either its your thing or its not… and if youre not it wont do anything such as having an interesting story to give it a chance to become your thing…
I give Ancestors The Humankind Odyessey
    a 6/10

I can't stop exploring and although that there are a lot of issues such as control lock, bugs, no saving points, no on line approach. But the game itself is 5gb full of emotions, beautiful ideas and an original evolution system which will make you turn every rock, collect all leafs and alter any object.
This is not a run to the final level, this is a story and to dive in give it time, don't think that you need to beat the game, go back to roots when you were just playing in your bedroom without any contact with outside world or who's the best out there.
This is a very underrated game.

This game is a missed opportunity. Fantastic idea, poorly executed. The last half of the game introduces almost no knew content or mechanics. Kinda clunky, just not great game by any means.

I had been waiting on this game for awhile and for me it did not disappoint. I think most people don't like it because it doesn't hold your hand, or because the game clashes with their religious views. As I fan of survival games I really liked this new take on the genre. I spent 52 hours with the game and was sad when it was over. I enjoyed being a helpless little hominid in the big world.I had been waiting on this game for awhile and for me it did not disappoint. This is one of the best games I've ever played. I kept firing up Red Dead Redemption 2 after I beat it and going "man, this is beautiful, I wish I could do something in this environment besides shoot innocent people in the head." Now my wish has been granted. It's probably my favorite game ever next to Kerbal Space Program. The only reason I don't give it a perfect 10 is because there are still some bugs and glitches, particularly with the AI of your clan mates.

This is one of the brightest, ingeniously crafted games in the last decade. Ancestors' design easily steps from survival to community and the generational. Graphics are lush, climbing fun, and learning to craft is natural. No other games compare!

I uninstalled this after the majority of my group swam across a river into a jaguar (jaguars cant cross rivers) and got themselves attacked. Meaning the next 20 minutes of my life where going to be spent trying to stop their bleeding again...
The amount of enemies in this is absurd. I cant bang two rocks together without been attacked 4 times. It's not fun, it just slows down the game to a snails pace. 99% of the time you will be looking for something to stop your bleeding. That's presuming you can figure out how. The tutorial is rubbish, the first 5 hours of your game will be spent alt+tabed looking at google. Because despite spending their entire life in the jungle, your ape has has no clue how to drink water.

It starts out really engaging, discovering the environment and crafting is fun. Replaying it is pure grind though, I had to start over after iit saved in an impossible spot (Millenium Man carrying baby died in a cave, spawned into baby that is infinitely falling, presumably "underground"). I'm about to move on from this game.

This game was fun to traverse, had fantastic music and was genuinely enjoyable to play. Although getting neurons and unlocking new ones was getting a bit boring to do, and a big issue was a certain camp would crash the game and i had to relocate to move on. in the end i loved the game but see it's faults.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ancestors the humankind odyssey is a game that is truly a diamond in the rough in terms of PS games. It has you playing as a group of apes that eventually evolves to become human. The climbing mechanics are almost spot on, very similar to assassins creed. The survival mechanics are also very well developed, it took me awhile to figure out how to eat a coconut instead of just drinking it. The game is mostly about discovery as it does not tell you exactly how to do most things, some of which you need in order to survive. Once you figure out how its systems work, it is a very rewarding if not tedious game. What the game doesn't tell you is that in order to evolve you must complete evolution objectives(Like kill every predator) that advance years in the game once you pass generations. It does a poor job of telling you what your goal is. But the discovery is totally worth it. As you start to get attached to your apes and really care about their fate. If you are okay with some tedium in your games. Then it is surely worth it if you like games like spore. Expand

Although the graphics could be sharper, this game suits players who love to explore vast environments and tackle puzzles along the way. Based on factual science and history, this is a must for survival lovers that want to learn as they conquer this harsh and unforgiving landscape. Also, hat’s off to this game for offering a unique storyline and gameplay experience, striving away from the open-worlds with maps and guidelines that we are used to playing as gamers.

Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey aims to tackle the evolution of mankind from our animal forebears, a hefty task for any one piece of media. While the goal is incredibly admirable, Panache Digital Games puts too much on its plate. It attempts to break down the process of human development in a fascinating way, but the concept ends up being tremendously difficult to translate into typical controls and gameplay. The information conveyance and gameplay implementation are ultimately disappointing, given how much curiosity the game fosters and inspires. The game still offers interesting content, especially in the audio and visual departments. While the effort put into the game is certainly laudable, the result of Ancestors is ultimately middling.

A game that not everyone will appreciate for what it really is: a raw and faithful experience of what the first steps of humanity really represented. It suffers from certain shortcomings, but we believe that the final product is a title worth giving a chance.
