A snappy length means the horror of The Bunker’s pitch-black darkness and wandering monster mostly don’t overstay their welcome. [Issue#29, p.84]

I find the horror falls flat but Amnesia: The Bunker delivers a surprisingly open experience full of experimentation. It's freeing to be given the opportunity to blow a door wide open or circumvent challenges in an ingenious way. It visually shows its age and I feel the storytelling is bland but the atmosphere remains taught and tense. The monster doesn't quite hold a threat but the ticking time pressures and compromised nature of your tools did make for an interesting game. It's short but there's definitely room to replay with a different approach.

With so many scary games to choose from in recent years, Amnesia: The Bunker wouldn’t be my first or fifth go-to for horror. Even though the game starts strong, it’ predecessors are fierce competitors in terms of mechanics and scares. Amnesia: The Bunker is a good game but not a great one.

The Bunker is a great addition to the Amnesia series and shows that Frictional Games is on the right path, and even though it doesn’t offer as much quality as the very first game, it’s still an atmospheric survival horror and is the best in the genre this year.

When it comes to Amnesia: The Bunker, you can tell that Frictional Games really wanted to up the horror. And it’s achieved it. This is true survival horror where resources are limited, and while you can fight, it feels hopeless. It’s not the biggest game in the world, and feeling constantly stalked and preyed upon means this won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. But those who get a kick out of skulking around in the dark, solving puzzles while evading something grotesque, will absolutely love this

Amnesia: The Bunker sticks a little too close to what Frictional Games has been doing for over a decade now, but with a more free-form approach to gameplay, the team is back on the right track again. Coupled with an excellent setting, Amnesia: The Bunker represents a vast improvement over its predecessor. You'll still encounter the same stumbling blocks of old, but this horror experience comes recommended.

Amnesia: The Bunker is a more guided experience than it claims, where ingenuity and improvisation are replaced by tedious resource management.

Amnesia is not a flagship of the genre. It doesn't pretend to be, and it doesn't even try to revolutionise the genre or its franchise. It evolves a little in its content and structure, but retains the same strength. Its job is to scare you for a few hours by immersing you in its world, and it succeeds perfectly. The Alien Isolation-style beast that stalks you incessantly makes you break out in a cold sweat, and the game is gripping. You'll simply have to get used to the decade-old gameplay. The problem is that it can also put some people off.

This game was everything I hope for in a survival horror title. It has an unstoppable enemy, one safe room (or is it?), a no hand-holding approach on direction, and a gameplay system that has you on the edge of your seat. Planning every move before I left the Administration Office was so fun. I loved having to read notes in order to learn my next objective. The mechanic that has you re-fueling the generator was great, and would still allow you to roam around in the dark (with the exception that the monster can now roam free, of course) This game blew me away. It was far more scary than any other Amnesia title, IMO. I was never impressed with the whole, "your character gets scared, so now you go blind", thing. While Amnesia: The Bunker still has that mechanic, it doesn't completely ruin the experience. Instead, you pop-off a couple shots from your revolver, and run for a hiding spot. This is a MUST-PLAY for survival horror fans and horror fans alike. My only complaint? The final ending, or rather, the final interaction with the monster. Took me completely out of the immersion and just annoyed me. Otherwise, this would have been a 10 from me. Full Review »
