Amnesia: The Bunker is a mix of Alien: Isolation, Amnesia, and a dash of Resident Evil mechanics (including a safe room, inventory and combination system, and back-tracking). This game was everything I hope for in a survival horror title. It has an unstoppable enemy, one safe room (or is it?), a no hand-holding approach on direction, and a gameplay system that has you on the edge of your seat. Planning every move before I left the Administration Office was so fun. I loved having to read notes in order to learn my next objective. The mechanic that has you re-fueling the generator was great, and would still allow you to roam around in the dark (with the exception that the monster can now roam free, of course) This game blew me away. It was far more scary than any other Amnesia title, IMO. I was never impressed with the whole, "your character gets scared, so now you go blind", thing. While Amnesia: The Bunker still has that mechanic, it doesn't completely ruin the experience. Instead, you pop-off a couple shots from your revolver, and run for a hiding spot. This is a MUST-PLAY for survival horror fans and horror fans alike. My only complaint? The final ending, or rather, the final interaction with the monster. Took me completely out of the immersion and just annoyed me. Otherwise, this would have been a 10 from me. Expand

Enjoyed this very much, wasn’t even a big fan of the first Amnesia games but this one really stood out to me. Hope devs continues to improve from here on forward, looking forward to the next game!

Phenomenal horror experience. Excellent sound design and game design overall. The setting is interesting and haunting, the decisions you have to make are difficult and tense. It is claustrophobic and feels very real. A must play for any horror fans!

No no please, fish-eye lens? Noooooo!
I'm looking for new game and have only watched the trailer for this. The description was excellent! I love the idea of introducing randomness! But then I watched it and, oh on -- fish-eye! Nooooo, I get motion sick and this is no-go. I will not name other games, but almost ALL other games are fine with me. (Fovorite games: HZD, HFW)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Big love to the "hide and seek" survival horror genre. Hard difficulty as a rule if you really want to enjoy the game. Didn’t finish it quick (did stretch it to 15 hours) because mostly played without generator (at the beggining playing super safe, later playing more risky and loud, when memorized creature’s behaviour weak spots and personal boundaries) and only running it to loot previously scouted areas, rerun some areas with a purpose to find every last piece of a note, or to try meticulously planned strategy. Was trying to save as much resources as possible, ending with a room full of everything standing here and there, lol.

Great overall design and implementation of ideas. Yes, "picture" and some mechanics do look a bit outdated but it doesn't bother. Better to say, every positive aspect of this game outweighs negatives. World War theme mixed with the unknown terror stalking and taking trapped french soldiers one by one is some fascinating idea. Loved it.

Was stoked the moment I saw that effective cover of the game, then watched the gp trailer, made it clear for myself.

Wish the game was longer. Wish for more interaction with the world and objects when you have that manual action. Like that fantastic revolver reload animation, where you have to press and hold different buttons - big ups for visual and interactive complexity. And wish ps5 icon was that cool cover of the game instead of a freaky eye, you get me.

Was on a hunt for those diaries, trying to find them all. Haha, tried hard but didn't succeed. Maybe you will!

If you played and favored Alien: Isolation, you should give The Bunker your time. Anyway, considering awful scarcity with quality horror games in general, Amnesia: The Bunker is a must. Definitely stands tall! Absolutely looking forward the next big game from them.

P.S. Somehow ending, I mean last encounter and final location kills the mood. Was baked and ready for something extraordinary, as the notes prepared you, but, this interpretation didn't go well with me.

Short version is: If you are a fan of horror games, this game is an absolute must-play. There is nothing that comes close to the type of experience you get on your first play-through, and for a game that’s only $25, it is very affordable and the quality of the game exceeds that price. There is nothing that comes close to the type of experience you get on your first play-through, and for a game that’s only $25, it is very affordable and the quality of the game exceeds that price. The Bunker nails something in specific, and that is its atmosphere. Right from the start, you can feel that the environment you will traverse through is extremely tight and claustrophobic. The bunker itself is expansive, but everything will feel so dangerously close to you. It feels like you have nowhere to run or hide. The environment is also enhanced by some phenomenal use of lighting. This game is dark; really dark. A small source of light can give some form of reprieve, but realizing that your surrounding is completely pitch black really sells the fact that you are trapped in a bunker alone. Your obvious choice, then, would be to use the flashlight given to you. However, almost every tool at your disposal can be both beneficial and severe red herrings, demanding you to understand how and when to use your tools. The consequences can be severe if they’re used carelessly. It’s a game of not only escaping from the monster, but also about tracking your inventory and your own actions. It leads to this experience that is not only very scary, but also tense in the fact that many of the actions you do can have their pros and cons. You can definitely tell this game took some inspiration from the RE franchise (esp with inventory management and safe areas), but it implements some of its ideas to great effect to the Amnesia formula. The sound design is also really good. The droning music combined with the loud sounds that occur in the bunker are really well executed. The presentation and environment of the game in general is extremely oppressive. The bang of your weapon, the rolling sound of your flashlight, they all feel very organic. I played this game on my PS5 and it also ran great with little to no issues other than very few microstutters which only lasted a few milliseconds. This will surely get patched later. The game also looked good graphics-wise. They’re nothing that will blow your mind, but it absolutely fits with the type of environment they were aiming for. To put it simply, this is one of the best (and scariest) horror games I’ve ever played. The experience is carefully crafted and polished from start to finish, with a heart-pumping environment and monster. I hope it gets a native PS5 version soon because I can see this game really benefiting from haptic feedback. And while it might be a short game for some, I think it’s absolutely worth it nevertheless. If you’re tired of broken AAA releases, the polish this game has will be a relief to you. I hope we see more AA-quality games like this in the future. Not everything needs to be a huge $70 AAA experience or really small indie experience. The Bunker hits the middle point of both while bringing both sides’ best features into a single product. Frictional has done it again! Expand

Just finished the game, it was unfair and annoying a lot of times but overall great horror experience. My girlfriend watched me play and actually gave her nightmares :D

Rats are the worse part of these game by far.

I'm in love with this game. It's fairly short, but for your first play through, it's masterfully crafted. There's no reprieve in the bunker until you finally find your way back to the administration office, lock the door, and light the lantern. You'll use the fuel you find to refuel your generator, capable of lighting most areas and keeping the monster at bay. Unfortunately, it's only a matter of time until you're forced to venture back out, knowing that each second you spend walking away from your safe house is one second less until your gas generator depletes and you're lost in the dark.

An RE2-style map is used to give you to choices in how you want to explore. You'll solve small puzzles and collect notes to find clues toward your next objective on your search to escape the tomb that's claimed so many already.

This is the scariest game I've ever played. If you're a horror fan, it's a no-brainer. Just know that it is a bite-size experience, so expect to get through it in just a handful of hours.

A brilliant game to fall under the horror genre! Personally where I enjoy watching these types of games I'm not great at playing them, I have to say I had a lot of fun playing this! I'm also really enjoying the setting that it gives us. 8/10 I would recommend playing at least once, currently available on xbox game pass

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Game designers of this game are so bad it fells good indy games that are firstcomers are triple aaa with 7 year of production cicle. I never was stuck in any game for so long for bad game design. I guess most of these commenters never played other Amnesia games and also didn't finish this one, all I can say because of broken gameplay I didn't even experienced The Bunker, worst money spent, if you do something wrong in this game for fun and you were in need to use that bullet to open some lock and you didn't you will just walk around for infinite time. Gameplay designers of this game should go to work to some more straighforward work. Expand

A snappy length means the horror of The Bunker’s pitch-black darkness and wandering monster mostly don’t overstay their welcome. [Issue#29, p.84]

Amnesia is not a flagship of the genre. It doesn't pretend to be, and it doesn't even try to revolutionise the genre or its franchise. It evolves a little in its content and structure, but retains the same strength. Its job is to scare you for a few hours by immersing you in its world, and it succeeds perfectly. The Alien Isolation-style beast that stalks you incessantly makes you break out in a cold sweat, and the game is gripping. You'll simply have to get used to the decade-old gameplay. The problem is that it can also put some people off.

Not even an intermittent crash or clunky load screen can minimize what Amnesia: The Bunker does so well. The intimate world, wonderfully interwoven mechanics, and semi-random nature make The Bunker a nerve-racking experience that’s a natural evolution of its landmark first entry. On a surface level, it’s still about creeping through a dimly lit hellhole and evading unspeakable horrors, but Frictional has spent the last decade advancing that formula to create the best version of it so far.
