Alekhine's Gun is being marketed as in the spirit of the Hitman franchise, it isn't anywhere close to it. The missions are boring and unoriginal as you move from one hit to the other hoping for something interesting to do but are always disappointed. It should also be said that the graphics appear to be last generation at best. My advice is to avoid this game at all cost and wait until it is available as either a Xbox Games with Gold or PlayStation Plus offering. Expand

Poor copy of Hitman. Even the $18 Hitman demo is better. Even Hitman Absolution is better. This game is a poor excuse of a video game, the developpers should never make another or should I say ''copy'' another game again.

Alekhine's Gun is a cold war espionage third person, somewhat stealthy (when AI isnt broken) shooter. This game completely sums up what is wrong with the video game industry. The fact is Maximum Games knew this game was broken (and trust me its broken) and released it anyway. I am however grateful that I wont make the same mistake of spending a single dollar on any of there titles. Honestly though with a game like this i doubt they will get the funding to make any more. Learn from my stupidity and stay away. If you are wondering why i gave it a 1 when i cleary hate it enough to warrant a zero, the game actuslly runs, surprisingly. It gets 1 pt for that. Expand

I would really like to give Alekhine's Gun a positive review . It has some good intentions and starts decently. The starting missions works ok, but then it declines, the disguise system fails to work properly and there are a lot of ground to cover without anything of interest. The awards/buy system is also very pointless, as you only need a few weapons and you only have a few slots for equipment/weapons (not a bad thing in it self) but after half the game you have bought everything you need. Play Hitman, Thief, Dishonered or other good stealth games instead. Expand

A poor mans Hitman, that tries to take the best of the game it wants to be, but handles it poorly.
Broken game play and low-res graphics point to this game being made on a budget, and its hard to call it a coincidence that this game was released at the same time as Hitman itself.

I created an account just to review this game. It's the worst game I've ever spent money on. It was crap even for a PS2 game. Controls, voice acting, story, mechanics, graphics, sound effects; all some of the worst I've ever seen. I tried really hard to find one positive thing to say about it, and I failed. I'd rather play Hide &Seek on an Atari than ever play this game again.

There’s a stealth game here, but it’s not a great one. It’s a genre that’s admittedly lacking in titles, so if you’ve played Hitman, and need something to occupy you until Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is released, then you might be able to stomach Alekhine’s Gun. For everyone else though, it’s one to avoid.

This is the most worst game in the entire universe. Slow loading, very stupid, waste of money. I took this back the second it started. Don't ever play this game or you might die from boredom

It's a horrible game and one that I couldn't possibly recommend to anyone.

The graphics are horrible even if the game had come out 10 years ago, the objects often times have severe texture problems that causes water to hitch at times, in other cases the aliasing is severe enough that it actually makes my eyes hurt when looking at the leafs and trees in the game.

The animations are extremely clunky and rigid, the voice acting is decent but terrible when the narrative tries to transmit a powerful emotional moment.

The writing is awful for the most part and it's a godsend that you can skip the cutscenes by mashing the circle button.

The actual a.i. perhaps the most important part of any stealth game, is sadly erratic in its behavior and at times plain braindead, in some cases I even shot at targets right in front of guards who didn't even check for bodies.

Even the game has technical problems, I thankfully didn't experience any crashes in the ps4 version of the game but the same can't be said for the pc version of the game, the ps4 version however does have some horrible framerate drops that are quite noticeable and prolongued, whilst also appearing when you least expect it, at times entering into a room causes the framerate to drop down to the low 20's, in other cases the outdoor areas in the game cause it to drop even below that.

    However...

The issue is that I enjoy the game personally, it is so awful, and so ridiculously absurd in some situations that I can't help but to enjoy it.

The game attempts to be just like Hitman Blood Money, you can even see the developers added subtle details as to how the a.i. behaves and acts that work exactly like Blood Money only if Blood Money had buggy a.i.

But generally I thought the game was so horrible that it was fun, if it was up to me I would recommend it in that way, but other people might not enjoy a game for being as horrible as this is.

You can unlock weapons between levels, and after the completion of the game you can revisit several different levels with your unlocked items and upgrades, although the missions sometimes limit the items that you can choose, I wouldn't be able to tell you why.

As for the rest of the game, the missions, locations, etc...

There isn't that much to say, the game tries to be an interesting drama with romantic aspirations near the end, but it just pails and ends up becoming a mess of different missions set in similar locations with similar objectives.

The game never got repetitive for me though, perhaps because everything that happened seemed so unexpected and silly, every mission was like a pandora's box waiting to be opened.

At one point in a mission there were two guards watching a door where the target I needed to take down was going in and out from, I thought:

I'll dristact the guards by luring them with my whistle to another room and then take advantage of that moment to follow my target through the door and then take him out.

But the guards didn't reacted to by distractions, instead some random guard at the other side of the level did.

That got me frustrated and desperate, so every plan I had went out the window, Because what's the point of elaborating a fun, and intelligent plan if the game can't keep up with it?

Eventually I returned to the location only to find out one of the guards had left and there was only one more guard with his back turned to me, I noticed this while the target walked right in front of him.

I ended up shooting at my target and the guard didn't reacted in the least, he just stared at a wall as if nothing had happened, it was hilarious, but then as soon as I shot the guard, the floor started shooting at me, because it turns out the other guard I had thought it had left, didn't leave, but instead fell through the freaking floor.

At this point I was laughing my ass off, but as an added punchline the game threw another npc's at me that seemingly came from nowhere, it was a woman wearing an american flag bikini shooting at me with a revolver.

And that whole situation became and incredible and joyous moment for me.

But this is really a situation that describes exactly why I enjoyed this game and why I don't recommend it...

Alekhine's Gun is a game that really pisses me off. The terrible graphics, the bugs, the laughable character textures and the completely idiotic AI are all irritating, but what gets me the most is it's lost potential. The music is great, the levels are designed in a way to get you lost and explore everything to find the best way to complete your mission, I found the story to be interesting in a basic and "james bondish" way and many more factors are a beacon to what this game could be. It's of course a Hitman clone, walking the line between learning from Hitman and strict copying it. If you like the Hitman series or the stealth genre generally, it will not be hard for you to play this game, what you'll find hard is to get past the things that hold this game back. For me, the graphics are in the top of my list as to why I can't really recommend this; I would call it a ps2 game but many ps2 games have way better visuals than this. Especially in the open world environments, the textures are so bad it hurt my eyes. The AI acts either as extremely dumb or everyone is high - in the Hard difficulty you can get past through doors though guards by running, they immediately forget what happened. To close this, for me it's a shame. I would be lying if I was to say that I didn't enjoy this game, the thing is, it takes a lot of effort to do that and you'll still feel like you're playing some ancient ps1 stealth game. Definitely not worth the 20 euros price tag which it stands now but if you run across it on 3 euros (as did I) and you're a fan of stealth, it's not that terrible. Just don't expect anything - it may even surprise you. Expand

Alekhine’s Gun would have scraped by had it not had the hubris to call itself ‘Best Cold War Shooter’. It’s barefaced cheek to appropriate the Hitman formula to a different time is interesting, were it not taking everything else from a franchise that has just revamped itself.

Alekhine's Gun stole from the best, but didn't know what to do with the spoils of its crime. The story is interesting and the levels are playable thanks to the source material being just that good, but it's missing the spark and attention to detail which made Hitman such a phenomenon. The copycat locations may look better than the originals, but the gameplay simply isn't there.
