Alekhine's Gun comes with an interesting story and some decent gameplay mechanics which are ruined by sub-par execution. The lack of features that are standard in modern video games such as auto-save and the ability to skip cutscenes, sluggish performance, convoluted controls and mediocre gunplay are just some of the most glaring issues of the game. More development time might have made Alekhine's Gun a better game, but in its current state and with a full price tag, the game is hardly worthy of anyone's time.

When the various elements come together, which does happen in certain sections and when fate allows, the game has the potential to be a clever, informative and historically accurate stealth game set among one of the most intriguing and fascinating in recent history, but too often this potential is over shadowed by clunky controls, questionable AI and dated graphics that make the game look like it is a port from a previous console generation.

Alekhine's Gun stole from the best, but didn't know what to do with the spoils of its crime. The story is interesting and the levels are playable thanks to the source material being just that good, but it's missing the spark and attention to detail which made Hitman such a phenomenon. The copycat locations may look better than the originals, but the gameplay simply isn't there.

Stop playing, though, and it melts away: there's nothing memorable about Alekhine's Gun on its own terms, because it doesn't exist on its own terms.

It may be a less refined version of a Hitman-style game, but the delivery of its rote narrative is sometimes innovative.

Alekhine’s Gun is a title where the ambition of design outmatches the execution with gusto.

It’s not impossible to overlook Alekhine’s shopping list of shortcomings. There were a few occasions when everything would neatly come together and create something genuinely fun and entertaining. However, the consistency simply isn’t there.

Alekhine’s Gun would have scraped by had it not had the hubris to call itself ‘Best Cold War Shooter’. It’s barefaced cheek to appropriate the Hitman formula to a different time is interesting, were it not taking everything else from a franchise that has just revamped itself.

I cannot recommend this game at all, to anybody, for any reason.

This title is one of a very rare breed, one that will appeal to absolutely no one, and buying it would quite literally be akin to throwing your money away.

Within seconds of starting the first level you will quickly discover that you have been deceived. The AI for the guards is either hyper sensitive or completely unaware of your presence. The missions are boring and unoriginal as you move from one hit to the other hoping for something interesting to do but are always disappointed. It should also be said that the graphics appear to be last generation at best. My advice is to avoid this game at all cost and wait until it is available as either a Xbox Games with Gold or PlayStation Plus offering. Full Review »

This game has been HARSHLY CRITICIZED! . Reviewers rating this game 1-3 out of 10 is unjustified.

While the game is not perfect for its bugs and lack of polish there is a ton of nostalgia and good moments to be had in Alekhine's Gun. The developers clearly on a small budget have produced a Hitman style game that resembles the series from Hitman Codename 47, Hitman 2 and Hitman Contracts with elements of Blood Money.

There are 11 levels in Alekhine's Gun, all of which can take around 1 hour plus to complete if thought about properly. A few stood out more than others but each level offers something new and fresh and have a hint of the old Hitman too them. There were times when playing the game that I felt nostalgic as it bought back the feeling of playing those older Hitman games and although the combat and AI are not as good as Hitman its still rather difficult pulling of the perfect score and kill and importantly when you do it feels rewarding.

On ps4 the graphics are rather last gen with the occasional frame rate drops during busy on screen action or outside sequences this was really my only complaint. The rather stupid AI never really annoyed me as in all honestly most stealth games do have stupid AI these are just more stupid than the usual ones but still enough of a threat to make the levels hard to complete.

Many reviewers have complained about the controls, at first i could understand this but once you unlock more weapons and get use to the mechanics i didn't find them a distraction, my best advice is to save frequently in case of an occasional mishap

The game took me around 10 hours to complete all levels once, I rushed the final 2 levels and went more aggressive as i struggled with the increase in enemies. The last level is a fantastic finale with the highest score almost seeming impossible to pull off. I still have some trophies left to unlock and look forward to replaying some of the better levels.

Overall I believe this game to be considered for any Hitman fan who played the originals and doesn't have high expectation for graphics and slick controls. The developers must be rather upset that the game hasn't received a few more better reviews as I genuinely believe they are big fans of Hitman and were hoping to bring back the nostalgia of those classic games. While the game is not perfect by today's standards, the gamers that love Hitman will find something to enjoy here while we await the next episodes of Hitman. I would recommend waiting for the price to drop or looking for a bargain as at the moment the game shows as a full price game. This game would have been better received had the price tag been cheaper as that would have been fairer due to the low budget and lack of polish to the final product.
