Age of Wonders: Planetfall is a game on an epic scale in every sense of the word. Both a world-building strategy sim and a turn-based tactical RPG, Planetfall offers a wealth of content to keep players engaged for a long time to come. While some initial commitment is needed to get past the learning curve, playing becomes smooth and intuitive within a couple of hours. Armchair generals with a penchant for lasers, robots and mysterious planets will find plenty to enjoy in this tremendously deep title.

A few minor flaws can't ruin this truly great game. Almost everything in Age of Wonders: Planetfall has been done perfectly. The futuristic world turned out great, the satirical atmosphere is refreshing, and the combination of the best parts of Civilization and XCOM resulted in such an addictive game that the developers should warn about it beforehand.

Despite a collection of minor technical issues, Age of Wonders: Planetfall is one of the best strategy games on any platform this year, console or otherwise, and weaves a compelling tapestry of play within every layer of its design, including tactical battles that are so good, they almost seem out of place in 4X. It may not entirely escape the colonialist trappings of its genre, but it manages to sneak in a thoughtful twist or two as it indulges in a delightfully weird sci-fi reverie.

The science fiction setting puts a compelling new spin on Age of Wonders: Planetfall, with a lengthy single player campaign and half a dozen contrasting factions to see rise from the ashes of the Star Union. There's some niggles I have on console, but this is easy to recommend if you're hankering for a new 4X strategy game.

Age of Wonders: Planetfall successfully brings a 4X title to consoles. The manual combat can slow things down too much and there's a learning curve to tackle, but the controls generally do the trick and there is so much content here for a solo player that you'll lose dozens of hours to it and still have much more to explore.

Planetfall offers a lot of content for fans of strategy gamers, as the amount of customization, options for growth, and routes to victory are staggering when all put together.

Alas, if you’re coming to Age of Wonders: Planetfall for a brand new angle on games you’ve played before, then you’ve come to the wrong place. It’s novel to see several different recognizable mechanics blended into one genre soup. The final product isn’t better than the sum of its parts, though. It makes the 4X a faster game to play, but not a better one, ultimately.

Single player campaign did not really captivate me, so this may account for the negative user scores.
Bit of a learning curve even for a strategy gamer, but worth it. Can be played in multiplayer without PS subscription.

    - HoMam = Instead of units you move whole armies with unique heroes. And there is a story campaign with branching sotry and dialofues.
    - New Xcom = Each battle can be played in a very similar way to the Xcom missions.

The result is very fun and addictive game.

It's a remix of various popular 4X games that works really well and keeps you playing. I'd highly recommend getting the PC version though as even the PS4 Pro is woefully underpowered to play this game. Late game turns end up taking in excess of 90 seconds to complete. A decent PC does not have this issue. Expand

When I first loaded it up I was a little confused with all the different elements. All the icons at the top are barely explained. Whilst the diplomacy option is a good idea, I feel it has been poorly implemented and frustrating. When it comes to the battles I feel it is extremely irritating. You can either skip the battle and win almost every time or you can fight them yourself only to your whole army miss almost every turn and when you are lucky enough to hit the enemy, even the best units and hero's only take a small nibble off the enemies health bar Even the special weapons like laser strike only take a tiny amount of health of your enemies. When it's the enemies turn it ends almost everytime with an entire squad of your best soldier's being wiped out by a land jellyfish or grasshopper destroying a whole squadren of your toughest units. This makes what should be the best part of the game pointless to play as you are guaranteed to suffer a complete wipe out. It seems like the development team are half vegetarians (herbal health supplements, donkey sanctuary & celery stalk supply centre as city names !?!) and half psychopaths that hate penguins. I feel that the game could benefit from building your own teleporters so that you can actually get back to your base to defend it against surprise attacks that take over your best city, and leave you feeling that you are wasting your time playing. All the elements are there to make this one of the best strategy games ever. Sadly it is not implemented successfully. Give me a few days with this Dev's and I can guarantee I could iron out all of the niggles that leave this game an over complicated and unfulfilling mess. So sad as this could have set some of the developers on the road to success. I wonder if they actually took time to play it themselves, because the issues are obvious. Glad I got it for free on the PlayStation store. Why would anyone buy the add ons if they can't be arsed fixing the base games numerous problems. Disappointed Expand

I dunno why but the developer released an expansion before stabilizing the base game. AVOID THIS GAME UNLESS YOU LOVE WASTING MONEY
