So don’t be deceived by the somewhat tired “retro indie puzzle-platformer” description; Adventures of Pip sets itself apart from the nostalgia machine in some interesting ways and it’s well worth your money.

For a well-crafted, enjoyable side-scrolling adventure, I’d recommend Adventures of Pip.

The Adventures of Pip is an example of a perfectly fun platformer. It doesn't do anything exceptionally well, but it's a solid and well-made game.

A simple and fun platforming adventure with interesting gameplay ideas and good level design. With an adequate presentation, memorable soundtrack, and the transformation system for Pip, it will make some platformer fans happy.

Adventures of Pip is sure to provide any fans of the genre with a good few hours of fun, and offers up some very interesting gameplay mechanics to boot. Unfortunately, the game is undermined by some niggling issues and poor design choices, but these don't hinder it enough to obscure an otherwise charming and intelligent little outing.

It's really nostalgic, good for those who miss the old classics.

It’s an undeniably cute platforming adventure that’s sure to provide a good few hours of enjoyment, but this is mostly due to it not stepping out of the norm. The Adventures of Pip does little wrong simply by not doing much at all, its colorful stages, tight mechanics and often humorous writing are all disappointingly dulled by an overwhelming and unshakeable sense of déja vu.

Some of the time it does one of the genres better but most of the time you feel it didn’t do either genre very well. Adventures of Pip actually manages to combine pure 2D platforming with a puzzle game and is surprising good at both genres.

The eponymous Pip can take three forms with different abilities: an Atari 2600 square pixel, an eight-bit sprite, and a Super Nintendo-esque sprite. Changing forms, often in mid-air, will give you the ability to solve puzzles and progress through the stages. Progress is not difficult but obtaining all the collectibles, often hidden, can be challenging. Useful upgrades can be purchased from collectibles but most don’t change the game too much. As someone who usually hates boss stages, I found them delightful in Adventures of Pip.

The story is harmless lighthearted fluff with meta jokes that range from truly funny to groan inducing. The art style is a tired retro look that probably has been used by too many games but is always pleasant on the eyes. The music is fantastic but doesn’t feature enough songs so finishing a world greatest reward is the ability to listen to another song.

My biggest criticism of the game is that it actually becomes easier towards the end by accumulating health and buying additional abilities. Players expecting a hard challenge should look elsewhere.

Overall I am surprised by how much I love this game as it could have easily been just another 2D retro puzzle platformer. Adventures of Pip isn’t a revolution in gaming but it does achieve the rare accomplishment of being a fun platformer and a delightful puzzle game.
