Oh my Lord, this is one of my favorite games.

    - It's heart-wrenching in all the right ways.
    - You get super attached to all the characters.
    - Incredible voice acting.
    - Amazing story.

Honestly I strongly suggest this game if you can get around the pixel graphics and point n' click part of it. (Personally neither of those things bother me, infact i quite like pixel graphics.)

It makes me sad that these guys got review-brigaded because of the politics on their Twitter account.

For what it's worth, I played this game when it first came out, and I found it to be adorable. Something like a cross between a point and click adventure and a visual noverl, it has amazing stylistic choices and real heart to it. 10 stars! Would play again.

It's a great game that deserves the 10 stars! All the negative votes are just attacking it because it's queer friendly. The music is good, alongside the story, even with the harshest of critics I would give the game a 7.5/10. All the 0's are undeserved and some seem to be from the same user with random/simple usernames.

Fantastically well-written game. There are characters in the game who aren't straight cisgendered nerdboys! If this is a problem for you, probably don't play the game. With clever, sharp dialogue and characterisation that defies expectations and the labourious rhythm of standard video game dialogue and development, 2064: Read Only Memories incorporates both the history of cyberpunk fiction with inspiration from the experiences of the LGBT+ community in the United States to tell a unique story of identity and self-actualization.

Combining this with its bright, cheerful aesthetic and excellent sense of humour that ensures its points are never too heavy handed, 2064: Read Only Memories is one of the best graphic adventure games to be released in the last 15 years.

A lovely game with great pixel art and a soundtrack that SLAPS. The world leans toward an aesthetically brighter and bouncier vision of the future than most cyberpunk stories, which is refreshing for this oft explored setting. It's also one of the few games that lets you set custom pronouns for the player character; a little thing that meant a lot to me.

The scenario, while not being the most unconventional, was interesting enough for me to actually want to finish the game.
Character development is well thought, not only there is -finally- more than enough diversity through the whole game so that it don't feels like a plain Hollywoodian blockbuster's script, but we get a lot of colourful characters, which everyone seems relatable in some way.

The graphics overall are okay, it's your usual old-school pixel art indie game with a neon palette. Animations are well made, especially facial animation during dialogues. Nothing spectacular but it really does the job.

Gameplay is, well it's a Point 'n' Click, so mostly based on story and choices, puzzles could have been a little more harder, but all the dialogues makes it a good game. Though it does not keep to the same interface everytime so you don't get bored with it.

Soundtrack is definitely good, all the musics are super chill to listen and some of them are really catchy, if that game was only made of the music player with these soundtrack, I would still buy it (though I wouldn't write the same review); voice acting makes a really nice addition to the game, as I stated before, it really seems they found the right actor for everyone, even simple background character. We have dubbing on the same level as Steven Universe except there is no songs (though I haven't 100% completed the game so maybe I'm mistaken).

If you don't like adventure games this might not be for you, it's not a perfect game but its very well done, especially given the restraints of the genre.

The game is purposefully a throwback to an older era of adventure games. The pixel art supports this well and reads crisply while having a destinct style of its own. Rarely did I find myself hunting for pixels. The music of this game both fits the style of the games it's inspired by while being a good soundtrack overall. The music is done by artist 2Mellow of Chrono Jigga fame and I would love to see him produce more for video games if this is any merit.

The story is good. Some twists and turns that aren't too predictable though this is a noir cyberpunk and plays to it's tropes. 2064 fixes alot of issues of certain characters being a bit more one dimensional than in the original ROM and is a welcome fix. There is enough going on and enough for you to change for the interactivity to be engaging. Occasional puzzles break things up and have been improved slightly since the original as well. Most of the voice acting is done quite well definitely adds to many already memorable characters.

Honestly the most impressive thing about this game, having realistically depicted and statistically accurate demographics for future San Francisco should not be impressive. This should be the bar that most games strive to meet, not that every story needs to have as much diversity but having a game match real life statistics shouldn't be as difficult as it is. Not everyone in the game is LGBT, but realistically characters that are gay or trans will spend time with people in similar situations. The world feels authentic for what it is going for.

Is this game perfect? No, sometimes you will wander around not knowing what to do and like any adventure game there is a bit of logic you have to dance around when progressing through the game. But for what it aims to do, that is an interesting small dev team's take on a Snatcher style game with good writing for it's LGBT characters, the game succeeds. I look forward to seeing more games like this since gaming can be so broad for different types of games and gamers.

It's definite the Developers were intending to make a "game changer" type of game by involving socio-political ideas into their game. From the blatant sexism of people assuming a female sports player is cheating in a news article to dealing with ethics involving robots. While not new for a video game, it's a pretty integral part of the game.

One nice thing is that when you get to the character building portion (albeit 20 minutes in), you can chose from a variety of genders to associate as including making your own. And from that point the game does use those pronouns for the character.

What's sad is that there's now around 320 fake reviews, about 290 bad and 30 good, on this game all because the Developers have opinions about the current Socio-political state of the U.S.

That aside: Use the Spoiled Milk on everything.

    Over all:

The game would have worked much better as a visual novel. Additionally your character does very little to influence the game's story other than get text dumps at every turn. Which leads me to the most important issue of the game to me - it isn't cyberpunk, or punk at all.

It's a very watered down attempt that feels like it's just modern day with some technological advances rather than a dystopian hell future where anything goes, life is cheap, and corporations own the government. There's anti-gene splicing protesters but that's it. You never really feel there's a danger to any of the characters and that the complaints about gene splicing actually make sense. I wanted to side with them more and was given no options to other than having every character hate and scream at me for being a "bigot" when I had no idea what any of it meant to begin with. Where's my caustic punk rock nazijaegers? Where's my chrome plated street samurais who'll take any milk run? Where's the corps pushing through unsafe gene splicing, paying protesters to flood the streets and violent hate groups forming? Where's the people who don't give a **** and just laugh in your face when you whine like a child at them about how gross they are to you? Instead you get pastel furries whining about how hard it is when you give yourself cat ears to get a job.

It feels like the main creator behind it (who is a gay white cis man) really wanted to show lgbt issues in a good light but forgot to portray them accurately, which includes all the negative and horrifying aspects. It's so tonedeaf it feels like a children's show's take on serious issues. When it was first released I wrote on twitter I hated the X-men style mutant=queers writing and had the creator show up to whine at me, having his coworker/friend jump in and try to lecture me on how it's "transgender people" not "trans" despite me being a) transgender myself and b) dropping the long form to "trans" because of twitter's character limit. I really get the feeling they care more about themselves than showing the realities of what living like I do is, and it's an even worse punch to the gut when they ignore the issues of being a gay transman trying to date in an extremely gynophobic/femmephobic part of the lgbt community. But hey, they're the "progressive" ones and I should be thankful I have any representation at all, even if it's inaccurate and borderline offensive, right?

Don't waste your time unless your politics align completely with theirs or you'll be disappointed. There isn't enough in the writing, gameplay or story to keep you there.

Did I mention boring characters? The worst is your robot assistant, with which you'll interact the most. He's annoying - there is one puzzle near the beginning where I kid you not, he explains it twice as long as solving that actual puzzle takes. Every other character is stupid or snarky (especially women of color). While playing, I longed for old communist cartoons I watched when growing up in Poland. They were less preachy than this game. And had better graphics.

At the price tag of $19,99 it's not advisable to buy this game, mostly due to the very low level of challenge and paper-thin story.

It was beyond dull. The first 30 minutes I kept telling myself "It's a slow build up, keep with it, it'll get better" and... then I reached the end of the game (after a few hours, obviously) and honestly.... I felt like I wasted my time.

The entire game is incredibly slow and, honestly, comes off as a little preachy.
I am fully in support of rights and such for every type of person. I do not judge, and think everyone should live as they want.
However, the plot and character development was legitimately obnoxious. At times I was convinced they'd ripped off the script of a Saturday morning cartoon PSA about identity politics...

And don't get me started on the sound. The "voice acting" (I use quotations, as I feel it would do a disservice to people who put effort into their work) is atrocious. At points it sounded like they got the same woman to voice 5 different people, each with a slightly different vocal tone.

Overall, honestly, it was just bland and forgettable. I have had more engagement and enjoyment from a choose-your-own-adventure game written by amateurs.
Maybe this game was trying to appeal to those who have very strong political views, so maybe that's where I went wrong.

On a side note, I'd like to give a shout out to the developers for going on Twitter and literally begging for good scores because their review section was "raided".
I thought it was photoshoppped, or they'd been hacked, but nope. They actually did that.
This is not a cool business practice. A game should not get a positive score because of something outside of the game.
I'd like to think they'll grow up and learn from this, but they won't.

2064: Read Only Memories is a game that tries to be all things to all people, wrapped up in a story that ostensibly boasts love and tolerance of different ideals, but instead settles on a half-hearted concept that isn't a speck on other beloved point-and-clicks from a better era of gaming.

I wouldn't have given this game another thought, but after reading about the developers openly antagonizing anyone who didn't vote a certain way in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, I felt I might as well give it a shot and see if it has anything compelling. I knew I was walking into a political minefield, but I still wanted to try it just the same.

For the first half-hour, the concept of a cyberpunk point-and-click adventure with a robot buddy and influences from real-world issues is not only enticing, but delectable. The early setpieces of 2064 relish in allowing you to experiment with different combinations of items and details in the environment, with lots of custom responses for each pair you try out. The game's aesthetic and color palette heavily evokes a cross between a late-80's Sierra PC game (like the Laura Bow titles) and a mid-90s interactive novel for the Sega CD. Even though the prologue is on-rails, it does a good job introducing you to the wider world set-up in the opening cinematic, and it feels like there's the promise of a much wider exploration of gender issues as seen through the lens of individuals who genetically modify themselves.

Then the plot gets going, and that's when everything goes to hell.

The biggest problem with the game is that it seems to be a study in gender dynamics. The set-up of how and why Professor Webber disappeared takes a backseat to numerous scenes of NPCs and other characters talking down to the player because the latter doesn't understand the choice others have made to modify themselves. This doesn't even take into account that there is next-to-no player agency whatsoever, and the plot is built in such a way that Turing does most (if not all) of the decision-making for you. The entire experience feels like an on-rails story where you do very little except watch and listen as other characters play out the story for you. Compare this to titles like the aforementioned Laura Bow series and other Sierra titles, where you gave the player character agency and it was your actions and investigations that drove the plot.

I actually thought that the early-game choice to designate which pronouns you want to reflect yourself as in dialogue was a tongue-in-cheek joke towards the same real-world disputes about gender identity and self-identification. It turns out that it wasn't a joke, and that this moment is just part of an ongoing, more subtle attempt to bring the player onboard with a left-wing ideology that you can't discuss, criticize or confront in any way. Any attempt to play the game as a bystander or ask questions is met with resistance, insults and put-downs. Turing talks down to you and treats you like an idiot constantly, despite the fact that it voluntarily came to you and asked for YOUR help. As the player, I had no choice to criticize some of the choices the in-game NPCs were taking, like deliberately gene splicing themselves and attempting to have children despite the obvious challenges such a procedure would have from an in-universe standpoint.

The promise of the early-game setup doesn't bear itself out for the rest of the game, and the material becomes preachy and belittling as a result. The game just doesn't give you enough information to make an informed choice in conversations, and as someone who generally plays as an inquisitive, pious character in RPGs, I quickly found myself being insulted, belittled and yelled at because I wasn't playing the game the way it was "meant to be".

Even more confusing is the ending, which changes based on whether you've been overly loyal to Turing or not. I never made it through the rest of the game and ended up watching the rest on Youtube. Safe to say, I didn't really miss anything.

At the end of the day, 2064: Read Only Memories has a handful of compelling ideas and a promising start, but quickly devolves into a preachy, simplistic mess that wants to hold the player's hand and shovel a message down their throats at every turn.

    Avoid.

I have to assume that 'all their friends' thought it was great, and wonder if there was anything beyond a minimal QA process. It doesn't perform well, leaves the user feeling empty. I thought it had potential, but the the puzzles and general gameplay was redundant and quickly became more tedious than fun. The characters were rather droll, but overall stereotypical and even somewhat offensive, yet far from memorable. Overall, lacking in thematic substance and technical challenge.

Trailers looked decent, game was very lacking in gameplay. Artstyle is okey i guess? If it where released a couple of years ago when the whole "pixel" look wasnt a fad then it might have been somewhat original. Now it just drowns in a sea of uninspired Unity games garbage.

I have to say, when I saw the trailers for this game I went in with high hopes. I have no objection to the retro graphics--there have been some fantastic roguelikes in the genre of late, and one doesn't need to run a game in Unreal to tell a good story. Look no further than FTL: Faster than Light for a first-class example with amazing replay value. Cute graphics, decent lore, but the game quickly becomes tiresome.

If it was a little shorter and cheaper (this game should be $6.99) or they revised the pacing I would put it at a 6 or 7. But as it stands I can't recommend a buy, maybe watch part of it on YouTube to see if the pacing and lore is right for YOU.

Oh, January 2019, the time when I had no worries and knew nothing about politics and western "culture." This game has just dropped on PS plus and I decided to give it a try.

After several hours in this pixelated click-and-point world I've finally finished the story. It was a slow-paced drive through a weird world full of L+ freaks and discriminative cyber-furries with only one normal character. You, the player yourself. Wondering why the deuteragonist calls ?self in plural, my eastern block brain couldn't take the amount of propaganda so I failed the "subtle" homophobe test and got the ending number three for you're a bigot, reee!!
Looking back at this, I laugh and can't believe I was so blind and beat the game and also thought the game was a 7/10 just two years ago.
This game belongs to oblivion for its blatant propaganda. But at least it was more intriguing than Gone Home (aka "explore your little sister's lesbian frolics") and Tacoma (aka "obese lesbian astronauts solving their relationship"). Gaynor must be proud of you, folks.
The number on my review is just the number of genders, I give this game a 5/10.

The main character is uninteresting and it's sort of there, you never see much emotion from it. The villain is even worse, it acts like a child and is very annoying, it certainly doesn't feel like it's a threat at any point. The game design is just laughable, everything is on rails, there's no challenge to speak of, you just go from one place to another, talk to people and hope you get sone basic action and move on to the next location. It's like a visual novel in that regard, and it's a shame because you can see the potential for a great point and click game here. I was completely disappointed in this game, and I cannot sincerely recommend it to someone looking for either a great story with memorable characters, or a point and click fan. It fails in both aspects. Expand

Buggy and all around mediocre. Gameplay is completely uninspired. If you want to buy it to support the devs, that's understandable, but you'll ultimately be left with a very underwhelming game.

2064: Read Only Memories is a cyberpunk point & click adventure game that takes place in Neo-San Francisco in the year 2064. While the soundtrack is good, the story makes the game really unappealing. There are better point & click games out there.

I was hoping for the throwback feelgood game shown in the trailers but it was honestly weak in every aspect. Huge disappointment and likely a historical tale of how not to promote a game pretending to be entertaining.

Was looking forward to this game, but unfortunately it is far too buggy to play. Constantly losing frames and it often closes itself, losing all my progress.

Repetitive and boring, bad attempt at retro. NOT worth full price at 19.99. If you have to have it, wait until it's deeply discounted, or better yet skip it and buy ANYTHING else. Salt and Sanctuary is cheaper and far better. Frankly burning a 20 dollar bill is more fun than this excuse for a game. Avoid.

I didn't give this game a zero because I'm a fan of the genre and usually support indy projects. However, this game's content is the worst I have ever seen. I programmed better games when I was in 7th grade. Don't waste your time or money on this title.

Games controls are sloppy, art is uninspired, writing feels like it was done from a new person on fanfiction.net. All in all an amateur game. I don't see how this game could be considered good by an objective standard.

All around weak and boring a very amateurish effort. Plenty of better games around much more deserving of your money. Ok maybe the graphics are kind of OK.

Completely uninspired garbage. As other people have mentioned, for a story driven game, the story is utterly lacking. Genuinely feels like it was written for a highschool English project, and by a particularly unimaginative student at that. The voice acting was also incredibly disappointing, and there is no excuse for this given the nature of games with little active gameplay.

To the developers: I would not have even come here to rate this game, I don't use metacritic, but after seeing you blame the review score on "alt right trolls", I had to chime in. In fact, after reading some of the 10/10 reviews, it appears that the only positive reactions you have gotten are based on your political leanings rather than gameplay elements.

If you want to sit through a few hours of PBS Kids style feel good **** this is the game for you. If you want decent gameplay and a substantive, intelligent storyline, please don't purchase this game.

Feels like you are being told that "this is cyberpunk" and doesn't really fit in the whole fifth element, shadowrun feel you would normally come to expect from a game claiming to have a cyber punk vibe. So I decided to try it out on steam. It's really overpriced for a visual novel with pixel graphics but I thought I can always get a refund if it's bad. The art is nice, but the novel is really badly written and just not enticing at all. Without spoiling too much, the story essentially shoves political opinion in your face, constantly.

Bugs aside, I had a killer time with 2064. Although series like Phoenix Wright and Danganronpa have successfully reinvented the Japanese-style adventure game for the 21st century, there's a certain allure to the mysterious world of menu-driven microcomputer adventures of decades past. 2064 not only successfully simulates that feeling, it welcomes players of all backgrounds and orientations with open arms. 2064's future is one that belongs to all of us.

2064: Read Only Memories presents an interesting, if not predictable, narrative that is propelled by its strong cast of characters and excellent world-building. It’s refreshing to see a developer put so much care into creating a cast as diverse and interesting as this.

I alternated between enjoyment and stretches of indifference. I am genuinely glad, though, that we have this addition to our growing Western library of visual novel hybrids (!).
