A highly appraised feature in this game is the character design and animation, you'll watch the main protagonist get hurt fall down stumble and struggle throughout his journey that really gives a sense of realism. The musical score fits the game perfectly and captures the mood in each and every level. The game however can be faulted on the lack of multiplayer and co-op capabilities. Expand

Played through the remastered version and it has a really great story and good voice acting, while the rest is pretty bad. It hasn't aged well in most aspects of the game. I've heard that this is the worst one so hopefully the others are better!

If I was the one to decide, this would be the first and only nathan drak game. (luckly I wasnt the one to decide, because i'm playing the third one now, and its a lot better so far, and i've already finished the 4th and rather liked it (I know, i know, shouldn't have started by the last entry, but, hey, it is what it is), but seriously. this is tomb raider minus the charm of the character plus a man.
and I really think this last part is what made the ~~gamers like it so much. Ok, tomb raider still is a very respected game, etc., but in my mind the easier acceptance of uncharted can only be related to the GUY main character.
Though this game to be rather boring and cheesy and uncreative. Maybe the fact that i'm playing it over ten years after release has something to do with it, but i'm playing older games every now and them, and it hasnt happened all that much.
oh, and the hitbox suc ks a AZ, its frustrating

It helped solidify the action genre and add more cinematic elements to it but sadly does not hold up to modern standards. Uncharted is by no means a bad game but pales in comparison to modern titles. Uncharted’s graphics look mediocre by today's standards. Characters look cartoony and environments are bland as well as blurry. The water effects surprisingly look pretty decent but other than that Uncharted does not hold up well in terms of visuals. The levels are also very bland and samey looking. Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune tells a serviceable story. The main characters Nathan Drake, Victor Sullivan, and Elena Fisher are funny and entertaining. They are well acted and turn an otherwise simple story into something exciting and action packed. The villains on the other hand are boring and generic. Uncharted tells a decent story but the main characters are what drive the experience. Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune gameplay is Ok by current gameplay standards but suffers in some departments. Uncharted is a basic 3rd person shooter where the player fights enemies, puzzles, and platforming. The shooting and fighting in Uncharted are a bit stiff but they control fairly well. The puzzles are basic and very simple where the player will consult Drake’s notebook for help on puzzles. The biggest problem with the gameplay in Uncharted is the platforming which is very stiff and frustrating. Nathan Drake will sometimes not register certain jumps or climbs causing the player to die unfairly multiple times throughout the game. Overall Uncharted is a serviceable game that has numerous problems in many areas showing that the game has not aged well in the coming years.

I have played the game after playing the 2nd one, but it still held up very well. It's a brilliant adventure game with a good balance of story and action. It is linear, but takes us for a great adventure. The graphics were amazing at the time and although there were a few hick ups, the controls played very well.

Not a bad game by any means, but it's definitely one of the most overrated. Story line was bland, despite some cool plot twist. Bland antagonist through out. Extremely repetitive combat. First, the graphics were astonishing on release, I remember renting, yes renting, the game at the local video store to play during the weekend and what a ride ! It is a good game but after having played all the other one, I can't give it more than a 7 since they were some problems in the first game: some controls were not as polished, the last boss was a disappointment on how to beat him (in my eyes) and I remember some encounter with enemies where shotgun wielding enemies were sniping you from 50 or more meters away while when we are wielding the shotgun you have to be extremely close to the enemy to achieve maximum effectivement (like a shotgun).

Anyway, it was a start for the franchise and they did a bit like Assassin's Creed. The first one was OK and the second one is just a masterpiece.

I recently played the game via the PS4 collection and overall the game is fun and the story is great, my only complaints are the wave runner/jet ski parts which are awful, constantly getting shot at, and Drake running slow like he's always in mud... That being said it's still a fun game with great graphics... : )

The beginnings of the Uncharted series was not as good as everyone claims. I would like to go record that the game still is a positive experience overall, but is weighed down by incredibly lazy and stupid ideas that the series would go on to fix and open up in certain areas the issues this one has. Let us get the pros out first:

The visuals (for the time of the PS3) was very good and I like the vistas you could climb and view from them. The framerate was okay, but I would have much rather prefer 60 fps for a better experience (that the remastered improves on).

The voice work of Sullivan, Elena and Nathan are good and they definitely set a likability to them that I can see how a movie is framed. Unfortunately, there are times where it feels like they are merely talking to the audience based on their delivery and considering it's not fourth wall breaking it makes it very awkward to watch.

The combat mostly is good. I like the multi hit combos Nathan can do on enemies and it feels satisfying to punch their lights out. Gunplay is okay: it doesn't have much depth and it was annoying to see how bigger non-armored enemies could tank a clip of a AK unrealistically. I am a bit surprised by the allowance of switching shoulder perspectives while aiming, considering most shooters have the gun in the right hand while some people prefer it on their left, but this a tiny little thing I like that doesn't add much to the overall experience.

The puzzles are okay, but it if you run on multiple playthroughs it can become mundane and boring considering you already figured it out before. Some just don't make sense considering some areas are retreaded and turn into "aha!" moments that just are coincidences. Coincidences are poor and lazy methods of telling a story or setting up a game and while it might fly over some players' heads, it didn't for me and I was very disappointed.

The vehicle sections are a mixed bag (and there isn't alot of them). I liked the jeep chase through the jungle with Elena driving and Nate using a mounted machine gun, but I disliked the boat ride with far too many explosives and awkward aiming and stopping to make it fun for me.

The villains and final boss are really not that good. We call this types of people "mustache twirling" because they are so ludicrous in their motives and ways when putting them in a reality that they feel straight out of a cartoon. Navarro has no buildup as a villain, so when he abruptly kills Roman it just feels odd and stupid. His final confrontation is awful. He's more of a gimmick than an actual boss and I really hate that greatly.

Another huge issue is the way level design is setup, where you go into a new area, fight enemies, solve a puzzle, talk in-between, before and after each event, cutscene and repeat. The future titles would go on to at least make spectacles to appease the visual hungry, but the first doesn't do that enough to feel gratifying. For me, I was already tired of fighting enemies halfway through the game. The cursed monsters shake things up, but the awkward running and gunning you have to do to beat them isn't really that clever. Fun, but nothing to write home about.

The story is nothing really good. I guess I am in a minority on this, but story in the Uncharted games are quite barebones; there is massive amounts of plot holes, missteps and foolish writing here (perhaps to be like Michael Bay where action over substance is what people prefer). The first one is definitely a slow grind to go through and I don't agree with fans and critics that it's anything above decent and that's pushing it for me. I'd say storywise, it's mediocre.

Uncharted's first entry is definitely bold and trying to simulate a sort of Indiana Jones that players can enjoy growing up watching those films, but it doesn't really nail those great moments that Indy does. Later on in the series, it can be said for this, but I disagree on this game being anything more than a 7/10. Once again, I want to say that a 6/10 is still a good score, it's decent, it has something to like, but not enough to make me love it.

This game definitely didn't age well. The story is very simplistic. Climbing sequences feel very stiff and dated, they do not offer anything but sequences of "jump and climb". Shooting moments also don't feel right - the best weapon by far is a regular pistol.

The characters are great, the music is very fitting and memorable and the graphics are top-notch for a title released in 2007.
I just feel like it is a bit too rushed for an introduction game to a series and could have more story by getting rid of some of the painfully long action sequences, which are way too similar to stay on the same level of entertaining throughout the game. Also, the supernatural twist, while surprising and exciting, wasn't executed that well. Overall, a decent start to the series and it leaves you wanting more.

His cinematic style feels very new in 2007, but ten years later is very outdated. The pacing is irregular, the action sections to uninspired, but in the end, it's a enjoyable guided action packed experience, despite his flaws.

Its action set pieces were mesmerizing and the views were gorgeous. The characters were well written, accurately reflecting the player reactions as the story progressed. That's it for the good.

The rest? The one thing that kept me going for the first 80% of the game slapped me in the face after that. Anyone that introduces a random monster into the third act of an otherwise hyper-realistic environment, or setting, is a hack. So... the plot went off the rails for the final stages of play. The shooting is janky, though I will be the first to say all console shooting is janky for someone moving from PC. The climbing controls are clunky at times too, especially when coupled with environmental features that look scalable until it is too late.
Adding a further gripe to the shooting, it is undoubtedly repetitive, but worse than that is that each shooting segment forces the player to be ambushed. This is despite their best efforts in attempting to spot enemies from afar or to play stealth-strategies... the game allows for none of that. When this style of play meets the *spoilers* zombies... the pacing of the game crawls. This may have been done to extend a very poor 10-hour solo campaign.

I am relieved to have bought this on sale, after the hype, for $5, because anything close to recommended retail would've left a very poor taste. With the general lack of variety in its gameplay, content, unlockables, or replayability... "Uncharted: Drake's Fortune" was the epitome of overhyped.

Im going to start with the positive things first. The game has pretty good graphics and i think it still holds up to this day. Even tough it was released in 2007 on playstation 3. I played this game on playstation 4 and i don't have anything to complain about the graphics. The story is also good. Its not bad but it isn't also anything great. Gameplay is fun and intense, also it has these iconic "uncharted" moments what are pretty unrealistic but epic as hell.
Then the negative parts of the game. Game has really broken cover system. It ruined many parts of the game for me beacuse my character wouldn't want to take cover where i wanted it to. Then there is no sneaking in this game. Even if you try to sneak the game doesn't let you and the enemies will immediatly spot you and start shootting at you. I'm big fan of stealth games so it was dissapointing for me. But if you don't like stealth games its like made for you. Linear action with epic moments. Even the close combat system feels really boring and forced. At least the shootting feels pretty good. The game is also pretty short. I played it in like 8-10 hours and there is no replay value if you are not a trophy hunter, perfectionist of a true lover of the game.
Even tough all of these negative things i enjoyed my playtrough and would recommend it to all people who like intense linear action or cinematic games.

Drake's Fortune is not a bad game by any stretch of the imagination, though it is not an amazing game either. The game has great characters and voice acting, but awkward gun controls, repetitive gameplay and a forgettable villain keep this game from getting a higher rating. As the first game in the series though, I can't be too harsh on it.

Too many repetitive shootouts in claustrophobic environments with enemies that spawn ad nauseam.
Set piece moments are dull and clunky.

And most part of the game are these action parts, so the good Characters and the standard Indiana Jones Story isnt enough to compensate the lacking gameplay. There are to less riddles and to less climbing parts.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. At this day and age, the Uncharted series has become synonymous with cinematic storytelling and third person action adventure. However, when Naughty Dog first revealed Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, everyone was skeptical of their ability to pull this off. Before this, Naughty Dog was known for franchises like Crash Bandicoot and Jak and Daxter, which were nothing like Uncharted. However, Drake's Fortune released to good reviews, and a promising start to an unexpected franchise.
The initial premise of Uncharted is Nathan Drake and Elena Fisher have found the coffin of Sir Francis Drake, and when opened, the coffin was empty, except for a journal. This journal outlines a search for the mystic El Dorado, and you set off with a third friend named Victor Sullivan.
The story is very fun and engaging, even with some horror elements that I most definitely did not expect.
Even for a PS3 Launch title, the graphics of this game hold up surprisingly well. Part of this can be attributed to the fact that the version I played was the remaster on the Nathan Drake collection, but the original still looks good. Character models are good for the most part, with maybe a few sharp edges, but the facial animations are the most dated part of the presentation. The environments are beautiful, lush, and so full of detail it's hard to believe they were made in 2007.
Exploring this game is a reward of it's own. It's just so cool to find a little nook you wouldn't have seen otherwise and you might even find a treasure, the main collectable of the game. The verticality of the level design is very fun, so it doesn't feel like all you do is walk on a straight path. However, the climbing itself, while not bad, doesn't feel very precise, and I had many deaths where I was very confused why I fell.
That dated feeling also seeps it's way into the shootouts. While fun and engaging, the cover system doesn't always work, and I found times where I got hit and i couldn't figure out from where. One other thing I noticed that worked as a blessing and a curse was the lack of an aim assist. I played Uncharted 4 first, seeing how it came with my PS4, and I didn't get the Nathan Drake Collection until later, and I turned on aim assist, because I'm very bad with console aiming. However, because I was forced to learn to aim with Drake's Fortune, I actually felt like I was getting pretty okay. It forced me to learn a skill that I didn't have, and while I hated that at the beginning, I appreciated it as it went on.
The A.I is in this weird spot where it is simultaneously ridiculously smart and incredibly dumb at the same time. The moment I would walk into a room, every enemy immediately knew where i was, and I always knew my position, even if I changed spots and the actual enemy models never saw it. A fun time to be sure, but a flawed one.
The soundtrack is incredibly good, always kicking in when it needs it the most. It's varied and dynamic, with many different instruments that you normally wouldn't use in an orchestra.
However, I do have one rant:
CHAPTER 18 CAN GO DIE IN A HOLE AND NEVER COME BACK. THE ENTIRE TIME SPENT ON THAT BOAT WAS STRESSFUL, BORING, AND TEDIOUS. THERE'S NOTHING FUN ABOUT WALKING THROUGH A BUNCH OF HALLWAYS, ONLY TO BE JUMPED BY AT LEAST 3 EL DORADO ZOMBIES EVERYTIME YOU ENTER A NEW AREA, AND ONCE YOU FINALLY TURN ON THE POWER, EVERY DOOR OPENS UP, AND WAY TOO MANY MORE ZOMBIES SHOW UP. NOTHING IS FUN ABOUT THIS PART. Rant over.
As the first try on this genre of gaming, Naughty Dog did a very good job, and despite it's flaws, it's a fun, exciting time. It established the groundwork for the sequels to take and polish to an absolute gleam.

However gunfights are way too frequent, everywhere you go there are NPCs waiting to shoot you, and this wouldn't even be that much of a problem if the gunplay was actually good. Unfortunately, the gunplay is mediocre at best and I struggled and died a lot of times while playing on easy difficulty. The hitboxes seemed small, with a lot of my shots not hitting, and there were overall way too many enemies who also dealt way too much damage. There's also a couple of puzzles which take a bit too long to figure out. If I had to give an overall score I would give it a 6.5/10, if you don't mind the difficulty then it's certainly a nice experience, but personally I would not play this again however I will give the second game a try. The characters were super charismatic even in this first game but the story was only decent and pretty short compared to the rest of the series.

Even playing in 2021 on a PS4 the game is enjoyable. The graphics are good and not too old, and probably one of the best ones for PS3 at the time. The plot is interesting enough, and the characters are memorable. The gameplay has many flaws, especially compared to its sequels, but still enjoyable. Playing this game as a starting point for the Uncharted series is perfect, since it provides context for some references later on, and it presents the characters well; all people interested in playing the whole Uncharted series should start here if possible. Overall, not an outstanding game to play now, but it's pretty good and I actually would recommend it to most people--I personally really like it. Expand

I'm 14 years late to the party...
This game started awesome and I thought "wow, a male Tomb Raider, nice".... But it soon began so boring with all the shooting. It's more a shooting game than exploring/adventure one.
Hopefully the next titles will be better.

Amazing game. Fantastic story. Interactions between the characters made the game extremely realistic and made me feel like I was inside the game. Gameplay, story, presentation of the story, level design, everything is amazing.

A fantastic game, however, held back by time. The game has a story filled with treasure hunting movie tropes and the characters are unforgettable. But almost everything this game does, its sequels do it better. It would probably get an 8/10 back in 2007, but now, it is undoubtedly a 7/10.

The final sum is far greater than the individual parts. Maybe you don't dig the combat or maybe the pop-in gets you down, but the overall package of an endearing story, outstanding score, great performances and fun gameplay should put this title on the top of your holiday wishlist.

This game is one of the most immersive gaming experiences I've had this year, and it's definitely a great reason to own a PS3. The mix of platforming and gunplay worked really well and left me craving the next title in the series.
  3. By starting with a great control and camera system, building on that with excellent combat and a wonderful spin on Ico's platform adventuring, and then topping it off with a decent storyline, Naughty Dog has cooked up one of the most relentlessly entertaining, fat-free games to emerge in ages. Topped off with the most stunning use of the PS3's underused technical prowess yet, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is, for my money, the first must-have PlayStation 3 title.
