No one but a Nippon Ichi fanchild could possibly enjoy this game. The gameplay is repetitive and linear, the characters are completely vapid, and the story is childish beyond belief. The non-cutscene art is even bland and ugly. Seriously, save yourself some time and money and skip this garbage. Even if you like JRPGs, you should think long and hard before you dive into this mess.

The music is decent, I'll give it that.

if you push yourself through the annoying, repetitive initial/tutorial part of the beginning of the game, and twenty minutes of dialogues, maybe this game be for you. i cannot play it for more than two hours...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have many games from NIS America and have not disliked any of them enough not to finish until now. The only other one I almost didn't finish was because it was a port that crashed regularly.

The main character is foul-mouthed and vile. She does things that would be considered utterly despicable by any standard and it is considered humor by the developers. I understand she is supposed to be evil but there are some lines that should not be crossed and some subjects that should never be used for humor in games.

Boss fights are very slanted towards ranged fighting which makes most weapons and strategies non-viable unless you want to use a lot of items or over-level.

Many stages are far too long. It slows down the game too much and grinding to get through a stage is tedious.

I think one of the worst aspects of the game is that if you leave a zone at the entry point you lose all experience and items gained. Any permanent chests that were opened stay that way so you can't get the item back. You can only leave by the pillars and there should be a VERY strong warning that if you try to leave by the entry point you are effectively losing everything gained in that zone visit.

I played 23 hours and 45 minutes before giving up on the game. My current game completion rate is over 70%, 99 of 140) over the last 5 years, and most of the played uncompleted games are still in my list to complete.

Metallia's antics coupled with the dull gameplay was just too much to take. Even if it does get better later on, the hours I sunk into the game's unsatisfying mechanics and nasty storyline left me cold. NIS has many good titles in their library, but this isn't one of them.

The designers decided that convoluted RPG mechanics and 40 hours of artificially bloated content is what the action RPG genre needs. [05/2014, p.68]

It's never enough to help you forget the game's warts. [June 2014, p.85]
