Game World Navigator MagazineOct 25, 2014The combat system is one of the best features of the series. It has nothing to do with the classic turn-based battles and resemble three-dimensional team fighting. Heroes are free to move around the battlefield, they know how to put the blocks, dodge, and not only execute fierce battle tricks but carrying out deadly team combos. All this looks very spectacular and saves from the boredom in those frequent moments when player runs out of desire for more grinding. Unfortunately local grind is a must – without it one never will be able to kill some bosses. [Nov 2014, p.106]

Play UKOct 19, 2014It's a good JRPG but not a great one. [Issue#249, p.72]
-
Sep 11, 2014The story isn’t as well-written or engaging as the plot of the first game, there are superficial characters tossed in for no reason, and the cutting-and-pasting of previously visited locales isn’t doing us any favors. If you can accept all these drawbacks and indulge in the awesome battle mechanic, well, good for you.
-
Oct 1, 2014A few tweaks short of the mark.
-
Sep 25, 2014A game that's bloated beyond necessity, thanks to a terrible design decision, Tales of Xillia 2 does a few things to address the flaws of the first title—and then completely runs that progress into a brick wall. Multiple times.

Playstation Official Magazine AustraliaSep 19, 2014An easyish “yes” to fans of the first. A total “no” to newbs. [October 2014, p80]
-
Sep 18, 2014The fear of not being long enough is what makes the developer introduce an invasive mechanic that ends up severely affecting the pace.
-
Sep 15, 2014Ultimately, it will always be remembered as “the sequel to Tales of Xillia”, rather than as an event in its own right.
-
Sep 1, 2014Tales of Xillia 2 isn't exactly better than the former episode. The game from Bandai Namco recycles too many features and too many elements, and fails to improve visually. But it's not worst either. Tales of Xillia 2 unfolding is far better and integrate the so-much-asked-for optional quests very well. The possibility to visit some new locations and switch between pistols, blades and hammer during the fights bring some fresh air too.
-
Aug 24, 2014Tales of Xillia 2 both succeeds and fails by playing it safe.
-
Aug 22, 2014Tales of Xillia 2 is better than the first episode, even if it takes too much stuff directly from it, which could be disappointing for the fans. Anyway the story is still interesting and the fighting system is really cool.
-
Aug 22, 2014If you played through Tales of Xillia, this is an interesting but rather lumpy postscript to that adventure. If you've never played a Tales game, this isn't the one to start with.
-
Aug 18, 2014Unlike the last Tales sequel, 2008’s Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, Xillia 2 is a worthy entry in the pantheon of Bandai Namco’s flagship RPG series. Unfortunately, the game’s ill-advised debt-payback system to unlock new areas and story chapters sabotages the overall enjoyment at times, and some other curious design decisions make Xillia 2 a less compelling adventure than it should’ve been.
-
Aug 28, 2014Tales of Xillia 2 is most notable for its unusually dark storyline and strong character development. It's only truly worthwhile when played as a sequel, however, and is dragged down by poor design decisions.
-
Aug 28, 2014Tales of Xillia 2 ‘s greatest strengths are also its greatest weaknesses. Continuing the saga where it left off will be a joy for fans of the original who couldn’t get enough of its intricate world and colorful characters, but Bandai Namco’s choice to revisit a previous game may not satisfy those who are in search of new experiences in the Tales of series.
-
Games Master UKSep 19, 2014Giving the player choice and narrative input is admirable, but it just doesn't come together. [Nov 2014, p.72]
-
Sep 19, 2014Tales of Xillia 2 feels like not much more than a repeat of the previous game. You'll spend most of your time walking through familiar environments you already explored thoroughly in the previous game.
-
Sep 4, 2014Tales of Xillia 2 is all about fan-service. Instead of adding new areas to explore, Bandai Namco have focused on stuffing the game with a lot of optional material, such as extra tough monsters, side quests and bonus chapters where you'll learn more about the characters. It's all fun and dandy, but after a while the repetitiveness of it all proves to be a bit much. Xillia 2 is a better sequel than Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, but it is far from being as good as many of the earlier installments in the series.
-
Aug 27, 2014That's Xillia 2's biggest problem: It's run time is bloated and the decisions the game presents you with are just illusions.
-
Aug 21, 2014Tales of Xilla 2 is a house built on a solid foundation with a rotting roof. It takes the best elements of the first game — thrilling battles and a fun, quirky cast — and drags them down by gating off content in a way that felt insulting to my time.
-
Aug 20, 2014It's hardly a disgrace to the Tales name, but there are other games within the series we'd far sooner recommend. [Sept 2014, p.120]
-
Sep 5, 2014Tales of Xillia 2 is a frustrating brew of boring JRPG tropes and needlessly repetitive busywork. Don’t let this be the first Tales game you start with.
-
Aug 25, 2014A disappointing and unnecessary sequel that squanders the potential of its story and is saved only by the series’ customarily excellent combat.
