Wow this place is filled with fanboys - you guys can't seriously think this game is that good. When you're done slogging through long boring mission briefings you get a few levels to sneak or shoot around that are good. Then another awful cut scene - then maybe a rail-shooting chase scene. First of all, I have to say this is the most overrated game i have ever played. -More BORING cutscene than gameplay. -Not about being stealth anymore. just GO in and ambush. - Useless equipment - MK II, playboy magazine, a cardboard box. extremely long cutscenes (i've fallen asleep twice), poor controls (i stand when I want to crouch, i go prone when i want to stand), graphically not up to par with todays games (looks like Gears of War/Ghost Recon 2), must be a fan of the weird japanese humor or you won't get it. you'll either love or hate this one.

I agree with everyone who says the cut scenes are too long. They are.... and they are boring. Sure you can skip them, but they do give you info on what the plot of the game is. The gameplay isn't good enough to live on its own either. I'm not sure why this game is so highly rated.

There are a lot of fans who adore this game and consider it the best out of the series, but If you're the kind of person who buys a game to play it, enjoy it, and not to use as reference material for your compendium of Metal Gear trivia, then stay the fuck away from this shit.

There are few games which I would consider a visual masterpiece, nearer to art than any other form of media. MGS 4 Guns of the Patriots, is one of the closest games (in my opinion) to actually succeeding that feat. The game is simply a gorgeously outstanding masterpiece. The cutscenes are top notch and the Music is ever so compelling, it's just awesome

A masterpiece. With the sole exception of there frequently being EXCESSIVELY cheesy and mindless cut scenes (which already ticked me off in older titles), and a fairly bad storyline, it is just great. Graphics, controls, sound, gameplay... all done to meet an extremely high standard. I also liked the fact that you are now not forced to sneak as much as in some of the other titles in the A masterpiece. I hated the game at first. I got caught by enemies costantly and I died a lot. Then I finally understood how to play. I could sneak past hordes of enemies without them even noticing which is very satisfying. Then when I got a lot of weapons and got caught the shootouts were a lot of fun. There's a lot of replayability with the new game plus mode. A satisfying purchase in every way.

Very disappointed! It is a movie not a game! Just finished and, a part from some the technical issues, the in-game graphics looks horrible, very old gen with some horrible low texture. A part from that the interaction tooks approximatively 1/4 of the overal experience (let me say from 8 to 10 hours of real gameplay).

I had high hopes for this "game" but it turned out to be a boring movie with brief moments of interactivity. Everything you know and love about Metal Gear is DESTROYED by this rubbish. Don't waste your time with this, you think you're progressing through a story, but all it does is keep beating you over the head with a "War is bad" message. This game makes me ASHAMED to be PS3 owner.

There's barely a game here, 5 mins of gameplay followed by 20 mins of cutscene, the final cutscenes in particular are painfully overlong. Graphically it's OK and the music is great. They've obviously spent a lot of money developing it, but this clearly doesn't make it a great game. I can't recommend this to anyone but the most fanatical MGS fan. I returned my copy.

Absolutely amazing. The only thing I regret after playing is that I can't imagine a better piece of gaming or film coming for a decade. Says who, the Pac-man dev team? There are varying genres of games, the MGS series is one in it's own, bordering on film, but not restrained by time. There are plenty of lame first-person shooters being pumped out of the machine if you enjoy them more. I'd say most real fans were sad to see it end. Someone even said it is too difficult. If the difficulty options were not clear enough at the beginning then consult the manual, or better yet try a more "child friendly" product, this is a game for adults. Being a fanboy and praising something you love is one thing and lots of reviews are guilty of that but getting pissed and giving a 0 to a piece of art you didn't even try and appreciate is just disappointing. Popular review sites and magazines generally have a good view of what is good and bad in this generation of video games(the same can't be said for film reviewers sadly). MGS4 follows and in some areas exceeds the previous titles in the series. It's fun, smart, different, beautiful, emotional, and engaging. Expand

First of, metal gear solid 4 is fun to play! the weapon upgrade system is great and the gunplay itsel is addicting to the extreme. Of course stealth is a supreme option as well and it transcends my old standards of what stealth in a game means. The story never faulters and returning to shadow moses is more then nostalgic. Most interesting component however is the characters, Old snake is fascinating and raidens redmption story is awesome. sound has always been important in MGS-hearing the "youve been detected" excalmation point is just as heart-racing as ever and the score is wonderful, using an ipod found n the game world you can play tracks spanning the series 20 year history-including metal gear one and two tracks-nd theres even in-game podcasts to listen to. Its not often a game is annouced and i have no doubts that it will be a great game, but when that game is by kojima productions i know it will be more then great, and Guns of the pariots is proof to that. Good game but horribly overrated/overhyped. The biggest problem is it's niche market. Whilst it might cater to some people, it won't bring new people to the series nor be a huge system seller. After the most likely lackluster sales, it might even come to the 360 so no rush for a PS3.

Where to begin? First off, the game still plays like it's from 1998. Why should we be forced to pull two triggers and then a third button just to be able to fire a gun in this day in time? Secondly, for all this bullshit about the graphics being great, not too many "reviewers" mention exactly how limiting these environments truly are; I don't want a sandbox-style stealth game, but when the game uses a myriad of invisible walls and "blocking in" techniques as well as the cheap respawning ideas forcing your hand to complete it just the way Kojima wants you to, it's a little ridiculous. Which brings me to the final failure of MGS4, a lot of reviewers have complained about a lot of the game and then given it a perfect score because it's a Kojima game; I'm not going to bite, Kojima, you are a failed video game developer and a failed movie director if you ever became one. Terrible dialogue and a heavy amount of redundancy throughout many of the cutscenes make what little inspiration that could be taken from them seem trite and when you, as the player, are taken out of control of the game and are forced to WATCH all the great action sequences, it makes me wonder how they can call this a "game" at all. When games like Mass Effect, Bioshock, Halo 3, or even Resistance are out there, it is completely inexcusable to lack such a sense of immersion in a game that's taken this long to create. Expand

I agree completely with 8ballz wilson. I just couldn't get into this game with the looooooong cutscenes, learning curve, and not even an ability to jump. Compare that to metal gear solid where it does all of those things well. shoulda tried to be more cheezy action action movielike, 4 went overly serious and it didn't have the writers for it. The characters actually had intersting stuff to say back then, i wanted to talk to all of the codec people to see what interesting things they had to say, now i just want them to shut up and let me play. The stealth elements of the game are done well in game, but the number and length of cut scenes reduces the intensity of the sneaking. it gives you too many breaks and totally destroys the pacing and numbs alot of the excitement of the game. They also shouldnt have made old snake seem so old, like senile old. not appearance wise that was ok, but dialogue wise, it felt like everyone was looking down on him like he didn't understand anything. it was sad. I can kinda see what he wanted to do but kojima had the wrong writer and cutscene people for that, this game is a below average game at best and I cant give it any more than that. Expand

Fourth if you don't like the story game play and cut scenes go make your own damn game, mass produce it, sell it and make one of the top ranked games in the world. Otherwise stop hating because the game was to difficult for your tiny mind to handle. On another note I think Snake deserved something better than what happened and It would have been fine if they turned him back to his original age. Its also very sad this is the last time we shall see very important characters such as : Solid Snake, Big Boss, Ocelot, Liquid and others. This game deserves a 10 because it has phenomenal game play, cut scenes, dialog, action and story. Expand

This is not so much a game, as an awesome interactive movie experience. All these people who are dogging it for too little gameplay and too much move time are definitely exagerrating (360 owners probably). My only complaint, if you could even call it that, is that the bosses were too easy, but I'm about to play through it again on a harder setting! Although the boss fights were easy, they were fun and the characters were really cool. I like how the producers realized how MSG1 was the best one, and incorporated much of what made that games so great into MSG$. A triumph. Expand

I could go on and on about how amazing and completely flawless this game is, but all I am going to say is Kojima himself predicted that "The Best Is Yet To Come" - And so here it is, the best video game to date. From story to graphics to gameplay to characters to soundtrack - Completely flawless. A masterpiece!

Solid Snake, even as an old guy, is still a badass.

This was the first MGS game I ever played, and it is still the best, followed closely by MGS3.

PS3 is worth buying for this single game. For me at least. Production values, quality of storytelling, character designs are top-notch. One must be warned though that every Metal Gear game contains many references to previous games in the series and you are losing a lot of fun if not playing them in correct order.

As other reviewer said, this game is made for fans. Yes, it is over the top, story is extremely convoluted and only works if you are familiar with characters already. Yes, I admit that I didn't have patience for some stealth segments because I just wanted to see story unfold or get to next awesome boss battle. Yes, this is a game where story makes up for all the minor flaws and quirks in core gameplay.
And those who complain about realism should just grow up. Yes, games are not real, get over it.

The latest entry in the Metal Gear Solid series brings the age of Solid Snake to a fitting and beautiful conclusion. Not only the best game in the series, but far and away one of gaming's true masterpieces, a testament to the vision of Hideo Kojima and the dedication of his crew to letting one of gaming's all-time greatest characters go out with an earthshattering bang.

This is not just a regular game. You need to come to this game prepared for an "experience" think of it as a conclusion to a series of books/movies/games/media you have been awaiting for a long time. If you take all of this into consideration you will appreciate it for what it is and it's a masterpiece at what it does.

Considering MGS4 just a game is a pretty limitative point of view: in fact, it is so absorbing that its fruition will broaden your gaming horizons up to a new level. Those who rated this game with negative votes didn't understand this work of art. This is actually the best multimedia experience I've had in my whole life.

Wow, I can't believe people are complaining about the cutscenes. I mean, there is a skip button!!!!!! The graphics are still up to par and this is 2010. What are you people playing? It's a classic MG game for this generation's console! If you didn't know you were going to be playing a true Hideo Kojima game, then take it back because you truly get your money's worth with MGS4!!

Guns of the Patriots is almost intimidating in the consistent quality of its ideas, invention, and execution...Even by the series' stratospheric standards, MGS4 is a remarkable high point. [June 2008]

If you've ever loved any one of the Metal Gear games, or any moments from the series, there will come a moment when MGS 4 will send your spirits soaring. If you've loved them all, well then there'll be many, many more. It’s a masterpiece.
  3. Guns of the Patriots is a frustrating, fractured game that turns Metal Gear Solid's world upside down several times over, but never changes it.
