Only minus for me is that has to install every act but that doesn't ruin the game at all.

The amazing thing about MGS4 is that it achieves everything it sets out, literally. Guns of the Patriots is an exceptional game and a rewarding one too but never I felt more fulfilled by a game than this, Snake's final chapter. It's vintage MGS you know what your getting the best there is to offer. In terms of visuals the game has continued to stand the test of time, like Snake because the cut scenes are breathtaking. The best part of the game is without doubt the emotional roller-coaster journey you embark upon, never has a game had me so involved and hanging on a characters every move, it is an absolute epic in every sense of the word. The boss battle with Liquid is something to savour and the final moments of MGS4 are some of the most moving yet satisfying scenes for anyone who has followed Snake from the start because the game raps up every loose end from previous encounters. Make no mistake this is something truly extraordinary, you won't experience anything like this, basically, its the must have title on the PS3. A true definition of the word Masterpiece. Expand

I have only a couple of hours to play a game in the evening, it's hugely disappointing when an hour and forty minutes of that time is spent watching a cutscene, then the game has the gall during one of its extensive loading screens to tell me to take a break because I've been playing for a while. No, I've just been watching cutscenes and getting constantly interrupted by codec calls and coke-drinking, smoking monkeys. Expand

I, too, was an impatient run and gun type of guy. With many games nowadays being released with a quicker pace and a mediocre plot line, I can somewhat relate. I have tried MGS4 so many times, and couldn't decide what to think of it. I finally caught on when I sat back and PAID ATTENTION. It's an art, the slower pace towards the beginning may turn many off, but it's a perfect time to perfect your controls and understand the game mechanics. This is the type of game you cannot DIVE IN, and trust me, I have tried to dive in. Finally, after my 5th try to like this game... I finally understood the 10/10. It's an absolute marvel.

Moments after the introduction, I quickly noticed that you'll be required to learn the controls on your own. Many games released after the PS3 went on market has tuned it's gameplay to focus on accessibility for those that have an inability to memorize control functions. Aside from that, the gorgeous cut scenes really place a deep tone that will follow throughout. It's a wonder how they pulled everything off in time for Guns of the Patriots release.

Stealth is available to purist and gunners alike. It just depends on how you, yourself, will want implement it. Just keep in mind that you will not be able to rely on one type of gameplay. Your arsenal will not only consist of various types of weaponry, but also futuristic camo suits and even an ipod to change the mood of a firefight. The AI are something short of fantastic, but more than mediocre. You'll find them waking up their comrades that you have tranquilized and they can even become suspicious when you follow them whilst hiding under a box. They didn't give me much of a challenge, but enough of one to make it interesting.

Action sequences in this game are unbelievable and sometimes jaw dropping. I found myself putting the controller down distracted, only to find out that I was still playing and was being killed. It's a game that will put you at the edge of your seats. The extremely deep plot may have many confused, and it may well be because this sequel is so tightly interwoven with its predecessors. I have only played MGS2, and was introduced to an overload of information that will only be mentioned once... SO PAY ATTENTION if you want to FULLY understand what is at stake in the game.

Overall, it is a serious game with serious game mechanics with an insanely deep story that will keep you enthralled.

I just finished MGS4 for the first time and at first I was skeptical. I thought that a game made in 2008 would not be able to match the quality of 2012 games. Oh how I was wrong about that! Metal Gear Solid 4 is now one of my favorite games of all time.

It's important to note that this game focuses heavily on story. In fact, you'll spend most of your time looking at cutscenes, some 30 minutes long or more. As a movie-lover, I have no objection to this. The quality of the cinematics, story and voice acting were enough to keep me interested all the way through to the end. Character design is fantastic and I can't help but liking every single person, even the bad guys. Fans of the previous games in the series would also be glad to see the references made to those classics. Hands down, Metal Gear Solid 4 has the best story in any game to date. Gameplay wise, MGS4 falls short of the quality of it's cutscenes. I could describe MGS4 as a movie first and a game second. The gameplay feels like filler segments between the cutscenes. An Act starts off with a 20 - 30 minute cutscene, you play for about the same time, then watch another half hour cutscene. But like I said before, I have no objection to this. I like the story driven nature of the game. If there is one thing Metal Gear Solid does differently in the gameplay category is that it isn't about combat as much as it is about stealth. I guess that's why they call it 'Tactical Espionage Action'. I'm more of a run and gun type of gamer, but that kind of thing gets you killed in this game. But it's a nice change from games I normally play. One downside for some gamers would be the lack of trophies. I think that trophies add a lot of replay value to a game and unfortunately they are missing here. However this does not take away from the experience. I played through without caring for trophies at all. I am glad that I decided to play Metal Gear Solid 4 and even today it is still one of the best games ever made. Fans of the Metal Gear series would not be disappointed. I think this is the only game I have played from beginning to end without raging a single time, despite all the deaths. I would definitely recommend it for any PS3 gamer. 5/5

Metal Gear Solid 4 is made by Kojima Productions. The story of this game is great! Metal Gear is know from it's great cinematic experience, which i don't mind, but i know some people will get annoyed by the very long cut scenes. The story is about Solid Snake who is very old in this game, and his mission is to stop his brother Liquid from well... taking over the world with his new thing called The Guns of The Patriots. The story might be a bit complex at times if you haven't played the older Metal Gear games(Even thought you should have played them! )but, it is still a great story. The gameplay is more of the same sneaking that other MGS games are about, but it's fixed. Now you can move while aiming, and if you want to just shoot your way trough the game. There's also a new feature called Drebin Shop, which is a weapon shop. You could complain that this feature will make it easier, but that is more fun than search for the weapons. There's also some tweaks to the movement that are also good. Multiplayer is also added to the game, but i didn't really care about it. The graphics are STILL excellent sure they aren't Crysis 2 graphics , but hey! It's a 3 year old game. Cut scenes are also done very well. Animations are great, the graphics are overall great. So i think that MGS 4 is a great game, and my personal favorite game of ALL TIME. Sure some people are not going to like this cause it's slow paced at times, and the cut scenes are long, but give it a chance
    you might like it.

The story captivated me and was one of the few games that made me tear up in the end. I understand some complaints about the long cut scene but for me that only made this game so much better. In the end not only did I go out and bought myself a copy of the game before I beat the rental but I also bought MGS1, MGS2, and MGS3 just to experience the whole story. It's amazing that a game that I jump into in its fourth iteration without playing any of the previouse can still make me fall in love with the characters and plot. This game showed what so much more video games could be and because of this I never view video games the same again after playing this game. 1. The game was not in any way designed for combat which made some boss fights difficult. 2.Sometimes I was left alone not knowing how to proceed to the next stage.
3.Weapons and equipment were hard to find and amo was scarce until I knew that you could find ammo by picking enemies up and dropping him
However MGS4 addressed both of these issues. The game was equally geared towards combat and stealth. The weapons feel solid and the stealth mechanics work perfectly. You could run through the levels like an armored tank or you could sneak through like a ninja. Also the objectives were clear and even though the levels were less open you never feel like you are confined. Drebins shop also added lost of variety by allowing you to choose what your play-style was by buying your own weapons and equipment. The cutscenes were beautiful and the story is one of the greatest I have ever encountered in fiction. I enjoyed the cut-scenes immensely although I understand how others may find them tedious. All in all this is one of the best stories ever wrapped in some of the best graphics and game-play ever even now in 2011. Few games merit the title of art. However, this game is just that. Tying up all the loose ends and unanswered questions, this is a cinematic experience that left me immersed in the game till the very end. It is the perfect ending to the story of Solid Snake, as we join him in his final battle.

Gameplay has been refined to the highest caliber, as CQC requires just a tap of the O button.

Gameplay has been refined to the highest caliber, as CQC requires just a tap of the O button. From there, other possible options are available when dealing with enemies. Though not as good as the Snake Eater's, the bosses in this game are well built and fun; the last boss fight has to be one of the best endings to a series in general with a fitting backdrop, music and slight gameplay change. With the introduction of OctoCamo, stealth and movement are very much affected, making the player make meticulous choices in which they wouldn't in any other game. Some times, the main objective is supposed to be sneaking instead of firefighting. This is a stark change from other games like Call of Duty and GTA, where one necessarily doesn't have to kill all the enemies to proceed to the next area. Gunplay is pretty much the same, though recoil and grip factors have been added, upping the realistic parts of the game. Customization to guns is very flexible with the addition of the Drebin Points system. This makes the game sometimes too easy, but this is overlooked in comparison to the overall technical prowess of the game.

Even with all these things, something else stands out as a top feature: just how clean this game is. Everything sounds nice, from that gunshot when you choose an option at the main menu to the low-key sound that starts when you save between acts. The blood shown in the game is gritty enough to show that someone is in pain, yet not overly filthy to glorify the act of bleeding. All fights that happen utilize sensible and real-world martial arts and/or some other type of combat. Yet even with all this realism, Kojima Productions is able to pull off awesome and unreal action. There is barely any wasted movement and how the characters move in the game is very satisfying. More important than the gameplay though, is the emotional content. The emotions of anger, happiness, sorrow are all evoked at some point in the game. Towards the end of the game, a pseudo-cutscene with gameplay on the top will start playing; when one comes to this part, they will know exactly what I'm talking about. This particular cutscene evokes a whole lot of emotion and is one of the crowning moments in all of fiction. In terms of plot, many should not find a problem. Other than superfluous dialog, plot is well put together. However, there tends to be debate over just how mixed the plot is, but I for one do not find fault. A gamer is able to connect with at least one character in this game and it is somehow easy to root for all the characters, with the villains included. However, most people will find Snake their main favorite, with this being his final mission. If one were to have played the previous games, the meaning of this would bear a whole lot of weight and emotions would surface. Video games in general don't tend to do that, even to casual gamers. However, this game just does that, and with its technical supremacy, it is well-deserved of a perfect 10 score. There is no better way for the legend of Solid Snake to end other than this. Kudos to the entire staff at Kojima Productions and Konami; you have set a standard for gaming with this adventure.

I would easily give this game a 9 or possibly 10, if not for egregiously overlong cut scenes. This seems like a case of talented game maker and no one reeling him when has clearly gone a little overboard. This how this plays out. You go from checkpoint to checkpoint with about 10-15 mins of actual gameplay (which is excellent). Once you reach a checkpoint you are treated to then 10-15 minute detailing you into the story. But the worst part is when you actual complete an act. At the end of the act lies a 10-15 minute cutscene then you have treated to a pre cut scene before your mission brief. Then you are given the mission brief. Then you are treated to another 10-15 minute before the next act starts. Then you must go through your codec briefing with ottocon. If you do not cut out any of the cut scenes you are literally not playing game for almost 30 minutes a stretch at times. Its mind boggling how someone thought this was a good idea. I do not buy a game to watch second rate actors read off second rate dialogue. That being the said the game itself is quiet addictive and all technology gizzmos you get are great..and the story itself is interesting. Expand

Metal Gear Solid 4 is a good game. Don't get me wrong, I like the game. But is it as good as that Metacritic score of 94/100 makes you believe? No.

Let's start off with the pros. First of all, this game looks great. Yeah some of the textures are a bit off, but if THAT is the decisive factor that makes you go "Ugh, this game sucks", then you need to get out of gaming. Now. The animations are very fluid, the character models are great, and even the lip sync isn't all that bad. Yeah, there are a few instances were you notice that the mouth doesn't move according to the word, but this game came out in 2008. It did a fantastic job with what it had. (Some of) The gameplay elements are worthy of commendation as well. Snake can (FINALLY) move while crouched, and a lot of the problems in MGS3 are greatly streamlined in MGS4. Camouflage is handled brilliantly in this game, with the new automatic OctoCamo system. No more fiddling around in menus in this one. The Solid Eye is also a great addition, combining multiple functions in one handy gadget. The enviroments are (for the most part) pretty creative and well realized, and even like the concept of the story. War has become a business that holds the global economy together, and through war The Patriots have essentially achieved world domination. It's a very good summary. Couple that with some interesting ideas, such as Snake's accelerated aging, and there is a lot to like about this game.

Sadly, not everything is good. Let's start off with one of my biggest problems with the game: The Story. Im one of the people who play Metal Gear games for their story first and foremost. And unfortunately the story does not deliver on a lot of different levels. While some of the ideas are good, their execution is sloppy at best, and at worst it's just terrible. On top of that, there are several plot holes that really take away from the experience. For example, Meryl states that she can communicate with her team through the nanomachines in their bodies. However it is later revealed that Johnny does not have nanos. That's fair enough, but why does Meryl look so surprised? She should have known that Johnny didnt have nanos the mometn she couldn't communicate with him. While we're on the subject, why is Johnny even in the game? I mean, I understand that his inclusion is tradition at this point, but Jesus Christ, he doesn't need to be in the game to the extent that he is. This brings me to another topic I would like to discuss. A lot of the returning characters in MGS4 have no reason to be there. Im not talking about people like Raiden or Naomi, Im talking about the likes of EVA and Vamp. Think about it. The whole point of going to Eastern Europe in the first place is to get the equipement that can heal Raiden. However once you get there, Otacon calls you and says "Oh Raiden is fine. We got the equipement from this completely unecessary returning character, that most people don't even know to begin with. Still, go meet Big Momma, because... REASONS".

Another thing that bothers me big time about this game is the fan service. It's one thing to be self referential (like the previous games were) but it's another to go all out and bring every character under the sun, and make every possible reference, and have ridiculous bits (like Snake going into Eastern Europe in a Young Snake disguise) just to please fans.

Last but not least let's talk about the cutscenes. Before I get started, let me tell you that I LOVE the cutscenes of MGS1, 2 and 3. They are super entertaining, and I never skip them. MGS4 has a lot of cutscenes, yes, but that's not the problem. The problem is how BORING some of them are. Im giving Act 3 a hard time, but it's my review so shut up. Take the final cutscene of Act 3 for example. It is 72 minutes long. That's a very long time, but the problem isn't the 72 minutes, the problem is the fact that this thing could have been trimmed down by about 50/60 minutes, without any detrimental impact to the story. Another particular pet pieve of mine is the final "Epilogue" Act. It takes 75 minutes to wrap things up in a nice bow. The problem is that, by my estimative, it could have been trimmed down to around half an hour.

So overall, MGS4 is a good game. It looks very good, It has some nice ideas, and the gameplay for the first two acts is very "Solid" (sorry, I couldnt resist). BUT, from Act 3 onwards, the gameplay takes a backseat to a poor story and a load of fan service, and it suffers because of it. It's a damn shame, because this could have been the best game in the series. As it stands though, it's a nice "tribute" with a few good ideas.

    VEREDICT: 7 out of 10

Disclaimer* I know most people aren't going to agree with me and think i'm trolling, but this is my honest opinion. And just a heads up, this review is also about both MG4 and MG3.

I have played the third and the fourth installment of this franchise and for the longest time, i just didn't get why people loves this franchise so much.
And to be completely honest with you, i think this entire franchise is simply awful in every way possible.
Why you my ask, well let my break it down for you.

First lets start off with the story.

    It's way to freaking complicated.
Call me stupid or what ever, but i wasn't able to follow along with any part of the story.
And the main reason for that is the cut-scenes are way to **** long! Every time somebody starts talking, i immediately notice the completely terrible voice acting, the god awful script, and bad pacing in the story.
Every cut-scene almost made me fall asleep.
The main character sounds so off, like the voice actor was trying too hard. It almost reminded me of Christian Bale's Batman voice. The worst part of his voice that is.
It's all so very cringe worthy, when the characters are talking like they have to say every emotion possible.
Making all kinds of awkward stuttering noises all the time, which makes the dramatic moments fall flat on it's face. Like they are forcing an emotion that they clearly want the player to feel, even though we all **** know what is happening on the screen. We used our freaking eyes. That's 50% of the dialog making "huh" and "hmmmmm" noises. Just **** stop it already!
The story also interrupts the game-play constantly, And by constantly i mean all the **** time. Just when they are teasing you with a little bit of game-play, *BIiiib biiib*
And you have to listen to this moron explaining every **** detail about every mechanic the game has to offer.
(Why can't i just find out about some of that **** by my self huh?)

There is all so a lot of filler with overreacted motions from the character, Like at the beginning of snake eater when he lands after jumping out of the plain, him landing in that ridiculously cringe worthy pose, and stretching it out for like 10 sec.. Wh.. why????? Why do you have to make it so freaking stupid?!

Second, the game-play (Mostly aimed at Snake Eater.)
It's just way to basic when it comes to combat.
Go behind the guy, and snap his neck, or shoot him with the tranquilizing gun that makes them fall asleep.
Crawl around all the time and hid in the grass, or out of sight.
Don't kill or kill the endless spawning of enemies.
I don't know man, i just don't find that fun. And don't get me wrong, i love stealth games, (Like Hitman, Splinter Cell, Dishonored etc.) Which i have play many many many many times before through out the years of my gaming life.
But this **** just feel dated as heck and down right boring.
It's all so very choppy when it comes to close combat, and aiming with weapons.

But some of the gadgets are really creative, and well thought out. Like the camo suit in 4, and the stamina/food meter or what ever it's called.
But they never feel like they did anything to the game-play that made it fun for me.

    Third, Theme and Verdict.

A big problem i have is the theme of the games.
It's like it doesn't know what theme it's going for.
In this game in particular it's trying to be all serious, but it never hit me emotionally in at all throughout the entire campaign.
For example,(!!!Spoilers!!!) there was this woman that "died" near the end of the game. And the guy who talks to you through snakes eye-patch and that woman had a thing for each other i guess. But it just come out of nowhere, with no build up what so ever in the game. How am i going to feel any emotion if non of these to had any connection at all huh?
And maybe i missed something, or maybe i just have to play the first two games to understand it, but **** that, people starting out on these games needs to know wtf happened between these to in order for this to work.
I'm not gonna freaking waist 100.000.000.000 hours of cut-scenes of my life just to figure that out!!

Look, i can go on on on but the think is, i know why i feel this way about basically all of these games.
And i think the reason why i don't like these games is because i never grew up with them.
And a lot people who did are praising all of them for that reason.
They care about these characters, and know every little detail of the story.
But for me, i just don't give a **** about any of this.
And trust me i have tried so many times to get in to this franchise before, but i'm **** done trying now.
Maybe these game just isn't for me, which really sucks because i really wanted these games to blow me away like they have been doing for millions of others.
But i guess that's just not gonna happen.
So my final verdict for Metal Gear Solid 4(And 3) is a 1.5/10

it's amazing how a lot of the professional reviewers acknowledge how bad the game is, namely in terms of storytelling and writing.

I mean, beyond the game having more cutscenes than actual playing scenes, the story in itself just becomes so convoluted that nothing makes sense anymore.
You also have the worst combinations of "anime" logic: grim ambiance mixed with "toilet humor", action scenes where the heroes NEVER DIE even if constantly out of cover and getting shot multiple times (unless they have cancer or something equally dramatic, so they can end with a long monologue). So you have a mix of attempting to portraying a grim future with nonsensical "action". And mechs vs swords.. let's not even get into that.
Dialogue is even worse, as everyone is a philosopher and eager to share their generic insights as the great truths of the world. Great for the younger generations, I suppose.
Another thing that was especially confusing was when they make a shocking revelation, the characters don't react much, only to appear terribly surprised when they go over the same topic AGAIN. I guess this is to make sure that those who fall asleep during cutscenes don't miss everything? So exasperating..

    Then, what about the game?
You've got stealth mechanics that are as good as they were a decade ago, with enemies going from blind to omniscient and omnipresent in seconds.
Snake, for the legend that he is, can barely climb over a box, so you're pretty much railroaded from A to B, not a lot of a freedom.
I don't play a lot of console games, and this is a good reason why: aiming and moving is extremely awkward and slow, leading to "battles" that look extremely awkward.

So yea.. I don't know. I remember loving MGS 1. MGS 3 I couldn't be bothered to suffer through the game parts. Now this. How can anyone put up with this, if not entirely blinded by the "coolness" factor?

I was disapointed as MGS1 was truly epic and there were maybe 3-4 cutscenes with this kind of pointless ramblings about sciencific facts. In contrast, this game, the whole experience is like this!!
I find myself being unmotivated to start after taking 1 day breaks.

Also, the game has turned from being stuck in the middle of nowhere trying to infiltrate bases....into a boring action game where there's too much action on the screen going on at the same time... it killed the whole espionage aspect that I liked the most about this series.

I hate developpers these days, they keep changing things that weren't broken to begin with and end up changing everything I liked about the series.

The story did matter then, and it's blown out of proportion now. The cut-scenes are uninteresting and absurdly long. Overall I am very disappointed with this one. But I hear many people like it... And while it might be overrated for what it is, you also may easily fall in the other camp of fans, who will actually enjoy the game. I did not. Expand

Only two Acts out of five offer interesting gameplay. Stealth options are being increasingly taken away or not needed. I don't mind lengthy cutscenes, but there's just not too much game to talk about. Bad game design galore (Drebin's shop available mid-battles?).

It's game play is simple and easy to get behind, but Metal Gear Solid 4's lengthy cut scenes and short amount of interactivity make it less of a game and more of a way to wrap up the complicated story line of the series.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is the apotheosis of the MGS series.

Historically speaking, MGS4 was a very important game for the PS3 and Hideo Kojima. When MGS4 launched in mid-2008, it was a time when generation-defining games such as Assassin's Creed 2 and Grand Theft Auto 4 hadn't launched yet. It was also the time when PS3 games were infamously worse than Xbox 360 versions, and even Naughty Dog had launched a messy Uncharted game. On top of it all, Hideo Kojima stated MGS4 would be his last MGS game, but no-one ever believed him LOL. In any case, not only did MGS4 launch in a very good technical shape despite the PS3's Cell chip making it difficult for everyone to code games, but Hideo Kojima and his team had delivered on all of their promises, too.

MGS4 is divided in 5 chapters, with the maps being far more open than before, especially in the Middle East and Latin America chapters. It's no open world game by any means, but it's got no linear corridor-like gameplay either, nor any need for backtracking. You still have to go from point A to point B, but there are multiple routes and ways to do that. You can sneak in, openly take on enemies, or mix the two strategies.

MGS4 improved upon the stealth-based design of previous MGS games and also paid homage to the series' long history and lore. Who can forget the emotional return to Shadow Moses, the place where the series really took off? Or that surprise fighting game-like final battle against Liquid Ocelot? Or the unexpected appearance of Big Boss?

MGS4 is far from being perfect as it's got its fair share of issues. The psyche bar was an interesting concept in theory but ended up being just as superfluous and useless as MGS3's hunger meter and wound-healing menu (no wonder why Hideo Kojima never brought any of these mechanics back in later MGS games). Most of the boss fights against the Beauties were actually lame (the Crying Wolf fight can easily be won by simply hiding under a vehicle that can't be moved even by a rail gun shot while shooting at the boss without it being able to harm you), and even their names are derived from past games' baddies. The mini Metal Gear robot from Otacon was of very little use. The concept of buying ammo and guns in real time from a store via the mini robot was awful and impractical. But most of all, Kojima was so obsessed with tying every loose story thread across all the past MGS games that he forgot to focus on telling a good and cohesive main story. MGS4's plot ended up being a messy mix of conspiracies and deceptions without any good foundation to back it up, and the side-stories were mostly lame (the Johnny-Meryl out-of-nowhere romance especially standing out as pretty bad).

However MGS4 's core quality is the gameplay. Sneaking past enemy guards can be tricky even with all the gadgets and expanded moveset at your disposal, and at higher difficulties it's a real challenge to remain undetected for long. The gunplay is also significantly upgraded from past games, and it's up there with the best of the 3rd person shooters of the PS3/Xbox 360 generation.

Overall, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is a pinnacle for the MGS series, both in good ways and bad ones. Hideo Kojima would later release the excellent MGS Peace Walker and the disappointing MGSV The Phantom Pain, but MGS4 is still a reminder of Kojima's ambition at its highest - even if the game's a bit flawed in retrospect.

It answers questions that I didn't ask, it sloppily puts in convenient plot points for the sake of fan service and it takes away almost all the charm that I fell in love with from the first 3 games. The best thing I can say storywise is there were a few parts that made me chuckle and if you ignore this one, it doesn't really take away from the original 3.

The only part of this game that I legitimately enjoyed was Shadow Moses. It was the only fan service moment I enjoyed and it was honestly just really cool to see that iconic area in HD. It's probably the only part of the game I think I would ever want to revisit. Most of the game is inferior stealth, easy boss battles and incredibly annoying on rail shooting sections. Not to mention more forced combat segments than any Metal Gear game before it. Basically, everything I don't like about the Metal Gear series is brought to the forefront here.

At least I'll always have the first 3.

I know that this game is supposed to be "high art", but it feels like talking to someone who really likes the sound of their own voice. When people say the cutscenes are long, it's not just the actual time it takes, it's the fact that between the stilted and poorly translated dialogue and the repeated, drawn-out exposition I can't even tell you how many times I fell asleep during a cutscene and had to restart it. I do really like a good story in video games, but everything here just feels like a crap anime.

There is a good story here (and the nostalgia of act 4 is a high point) but it's drawn and spread out for the sake of being artsy. And we've got a healthy dose of toilet humor and female characters designed by 13 year olds.

It should also be mentioned that the gameplay sections (less than half the runtime of the game) are straight out of 1998. You still get that weird hunched shoulders running and you have to stop dead to hit the crouch button, otherwise you'll dive. But don't worry so much about that-you're only running from cutscene to another cutscene anyway.

So I think the real questions you need to ask before diving in are: Did you want Solid Snake to be older with a dad mustache? Do you want a 20 minute phone call explanation of each weirdly buxom boss AFTER you kill them? Do you want someone to spell out for you why war is bad over and over? Are you in to the type of story where you might spend several minutes watching a little girl cook eggs? What about the type of story that might culminate in a slap fight between two geriatrics? If the answer to any of these questions is "yes", then go for it.
