Not the game I expected it to be. The cutscenes are long and annoying, and the gameplay is a bit outdated. It follows the MGS standard, but doesn't really improve on it, and the series did need to improve on it's gameplay a bit to keep up with the times. It's a good game, but not great.

Graphics, gameplay and music are fantastic, but the story and voice acting is flat out terrible. The character development is lacking and it reeks of cheap anime forumulas. It's a stealth game so you lose points for killing and being noisy. They tried to add underlying story to MGS1 and there were several pieces that caused huge plot holes. They do not attempt to bring newcomers to the series up to speed on the story. And the 300 different endings are so boring I feel asleep twice on two different nights trying to watch it. There are a lot of fanboys out there who will eat anything Hideo throws out there, but this is not the case. Fun game, but is nowhere close to the critical acclaim it received. Expand

I rented this and am new to the series. This game seems suited for the MGS fanboys. Not something you will pick up and play well the first couple hours. my main gripes are .. why can't Snake jump ? I constantly was held up by 18 inch boxes or crates. Also why is Snake sooo slow ? He runs slower than most game avatars walk. And why oh why is there so many lengthy drawn out cut scenes I rented this and am new to the series. This game seems suited for the MGS fanboys. Metal Gear Solid 4 Guns of the Patriots is very much into its own self importance. This does not really feel like a game but more an interactive movie. I know this because at the end of the game there are stats of how long you spend prone, crouching and walking etc. The action in the game is very much what Metal Gear fans like with the classic formula still intact. Its just a shame that these are broken up by LONG video sequences that CANNOT be skipped. One scene i had to watch two or three times at 20 minutes each because I died. It was just painful. There is one really genius moment which fans of the original will spot and hopefully enjoy as much as I did.
I cannot say this game is bad because it wasn't. But the story really took over what is meant to be a game. At times I began to really switch off to the story just because it felt like my life was being sucked away from the LONG LONG backwards and forwards conversations throughout the game.
The serious serious fans of the series are likely to not have a bad word to say but if like me you just want to play a game then this just goes on for far to long. Playing only one third of a game does not sound right does it?
I had such hopes of this game and its the reason i brought a PS3, but it left me very disappointed.

The older games had a good balance of play to watch ratio. Metal Gear Solid 4 unbalances it to ridiculous proportions. That's not the only problem, either. The story and dialogue that you're forced to endlessly watch is ham-fisted, convoluted and confusing. It gets so wrapped up in it's own intricacies and technical details, that the bigger picture becomes diluted and difficult to understand. In the end, I found MGS4 to be a fun game with infuriating story components that came close to unraveling the whole package. I really think that Hideo Kojima needs to reel himself in and go back to basics for the next Solid Snake outing. Expand

In all honesty the basic mechanics have generally changed very little since the Playstation One days and, while many would argue that it hasn't really needed to, it does mean that it is behind other stealth games like Deus Ex or Dishonored in terms of the level of freedom offered. Fortunately Kojima’s ability to conceive ideas and set pieces that very few other game designers can, means there are always surprises just around the corner and this is largely what kept me playing all the way to the end. If Kojima can accept he is a game designer not a film director then maybe we’ll be treated to a true classic again one day but for now this will do.

MSG4 was a disappointment to me...and a large fan of the series. The dialogue is pretty terrible. I cannot fathom why the writers kept having Snake keep on repeating what people were telling him in the form of the question. "It was the Patriots, Snake." "The Patriots!?" This happens MULTIPLE times throughout the game. The dialogue was honestly eye-rolling...it was corny, and disappointing.
Anyway...the game is worth the $30.00 I paid for it used. Pick it up...enjoy it as much as you can, because to make it through the exaggerated dialogue and trite cutscenes took every ounce of needing closure to the series as I could muster.

That is never a good thing. I was so bored throughout the constant sneaking and crawling that I almost wanted to get caught, I probably shouldn't be complaining about a lack of conflict in a stealth game, but when sneaking around is this boring, the game developers have done something wrong. Why were there so few enemies to sneak past in this game, there was a point in the game where I didn't come across any enemies for what seemed like a full half hour. I was just crawling in an empty jungle. Even as the game got better at Act 3, Act 4 came along and through me in a blizzard and gave me no direction to go in (and of course the only enemies I find are the giant, two-legged, mooing robots). Not to mention this series is to meta for me to have any sense of immersion. I was very aware that I was playing a video game and that is never a good thing. Video games are a lot like movies or books, they need to take you to places that you could only dream about. There was some good to the game, though. I liked the story, even though I didn't feel much for the characters (but I could tell there was a lot of history here), Act 3 was great, and the bosses were all sorts of creative. But I just feel like this game wasn't ment for me. Fans of this franchise will enjoy this game for many years, but I couldn't care less. I'll just go on youtube, watch the cutscenes, and call it a day. Expand

I was disapointed as MGS1 was truly epic and there were maybe 3-4 cutscenes with this kind of pointless ramblings about sciencific facts. In contrast, this game, the whole experience is like this!!
I find myself being unmotivated to start after taking 1 day breaks.

Also, the game has turned from being stuck in the middle of nowhere trying to infiltrate bases....into a boring action game where there's too much action on the screen going on at the same time... it killed the whole espionage aspect that I liked the most about this series.

I hate developpers these days, they keep changing things that weren't broken to begin with and end up changing everything I liked about the series.

It's game play is simple and easy to get behind, but Metal Gear Solid 4's lengthy cut scenes and short amount of interactivity make it less of a game and more of a way to wrap up the complicated story line of the series.

Good game but horribly overrated/overhyped. The biggest problem is it's niche market. Whilst it might cater to some people, it won't bring new people to the series nor be a huge system seller. After the most likely lackluster sales, it might even come to the 360 so no rush for a PS3.

By the end you will have seen four crazy bitches scream for 20 minutes straight (which is honestly nothing more than irritating), You will have seen a monkey smoking, a full grown man crap his pants and then watch in disbelief as the game try's to make you laugh with fart jokes, a gay vampire dance like a ballerina as you repeatedly blow his brains out, an incredibly pale ninja guy fight with a sword in his mouth, the absolute worst attempt at romance I've ever seen a video game attempt during a shootout, and to top it off there will be a wedding at the end the is so unbelievably gay that I literally turned my system off because of. I can see why people love MGS4, but for me, I can't. As much as I like video games with stories, MGS4 takes it to a whole new level. Then you have to install the different chapters onto your PS3 and you can only have one at a time, so either you load Chapter 1, then load 2, and if you wanna go to another save file, you gotta load Chapter 5... it's complete hell. But through all this garbage, MGS4 does have a decent multiplayer that'll keep you hooked for about 1 hour, and the gameplay is fun in Singleplayer and is a MGS in the end so you can't really go wrong there. But when the game makes the player wait 30 minutes to actually interact with the game and actually play it, I can't call it a game. Metal Gear Solid 4 is an interactive movie. You spend more time, trying to follow a story that makes little to no sense, than you do actually shooting bad guys. I could go on and on about how much I'm disappointed in the game because it drove me insane, and there are a lot of combat elements that are realistic and fun, but the actual "GAME", just sucks. This game is overhyped. The story becomes ridicilious with all the Nano things, the bosses are boring and you do watch more than play, which is a big failure if you thinking about, that this actually is a game. Its big fan service with things like shadow moses included, has good graphics and also the gameplay is good but the things that i mention above just ruins a part of the game.

Good music, graphicsand online play, decent story, bad gameplay. The gameplay consists of running from cutscene to cutscene, the game holding your hand the whole way through. This game was a huge disappointment compared to MGS3, but it is decent enough. I'm glad I bought the Greatest Hits version for $20.00, otherwise I would probably feel ripped off.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In terms of game play this game would be a 9 out of ten. mostly because it did not reward stealth as much as the other MGS games. it is the story and Raiden that bring this game down. at the end of mgs2 you felt helpless. the enemy was so much bigger than you could imagine. then in mgs4 it was just two old guys fighting each other. and explaining all the supernatural stuff with nano machines was just bad. plus they took innocent Raiden and tried to make him a bad ass. I loved innocent Raiden. Expand

It answers questions that I didn't ask, it sloppily puts in convenient plot points for the sake of fan service and it takes away almost all the charm that I fell in love with from the first 3 games. The best thing I can say storywise is there were a few parts that made me chuckle and if you ignore this one, it doesn't really take away from the original 3.

The only part of this game that I legitimately enjoyed was Shadow Moses. It was the only fan service moment I enjoyed and it was honestly just really cool to see that iconic area in HD. It's probably the only part of the game I think I would ever want to revisit. Most of the game is inferior stealth, easy boss battles and incredibly annoying on rail shooting sections. Not to mention more forced combat segments than any Metal Gear game before it. Basically, everything I don't like about the Metal Gear series is brought to the forefront here.

At least I'll always have the first 3.
I beat this game in December of 2019.

I kinda knew what to expect from this, having read about all the cutscenes, and having played MGS on PS1 years back I knew that it'd be another ridiculously unfathomable Japanese plot about stupid fantasy characters with idiotic names. That said, I picked it up second hand because of the hundreds of 10/10 reviews. I honestly don't know how anyone could really think this is worthy of any more than a 6 or 7/10 at best. For a start, gameplay makes up about 20% of the experience, but the gameplay is seriously dull. At no point do you really feel in danger, instead there are long periods of plodding about areas that feel like they've been designed on Super Nintendo in 1994, followed by a frustrating bit that you might have to do a few times because the objectives are just unclear and baffling. Let me be clear - this is not a game for grown adults. I have arrived at a part of the game that requires a bit of trial and error to overcome, and having tried a few different methods, I just can't be bothered to waste any more time on this game, I have more important things to do with my free time. The only things MGS4 has in it's favour are it's presentation and the cutscene graphics, which are pretty despite the truly preposterous "storyline" which tries to sabotage your will to live. I agree with everyone who says the cut scenes are too long. They are.... and they are boring. Sure you can skip them, but they do give you info on what the plot of the game is. The gameplay isn't good enough to live on its own either. I'm not sure why this game is so highly rated.

Usually I tend to write more in my reviews of games I haven't enjoyed than of those that I have, as I feel there is more of an obligation to explain and justify a negative opinion. But for MGS4, I simply can't be bothered. I couldn't take the time or effort to finish the game, so I'm hardly like to afford much attention to reviewing a game I hated. Part of the game's big selling point was its stealth mechanic. Spiderman 2 had a better stealth mechanic. I appreciate that the story only makes sense to those who are fans of the series, but in a way not having played any of the other games makes me more of an objective review of the game as it stands alone. And MGS4 stands silent, in the shadows, preparing to crawl along on its belly so that nobody else notices how poor it is.

This is the pinnacle of fan-servicing. I have never seen such bad writing in a game of this caliber. Hideo Kojima was always a terrible writer but the stuff he's come out with here is just beyond words. Somebody should have broken the man's fingers or at least put him into cryogenic freezing for 200 years in the hope that when he would reawaken Konami would be long gone, and there would be no company that would have his repugnant brain in employ. Some cutscenes go on for twenty minutes... some go on for two. It doesn't make any difference because by the time they get to the point you have already forgotten what you wanted to find out. The characters (protagonist(s) and antagonists) are all repugnant and two dimensional. I do not care about their hopes, dreams, desires, fears; they can all go jump in the lake.

Oh yeah and 'uncompressed audio?' **** you.

Gameplay mechanics are still as faulty as ever in true lovable MGS style. Restrictive environments aplenty and horrible control scheme. Movements are too jerky and unrefined to produce a smooth and subtle stealth experience. Stick to Splinter Cell (or Dishonored etc). The game also looks like garbage and this is inexcusable considering how long it was in development for... This is the same year that we had Dead Space and Far Cry 2 and they still hold up today. The biggest visual problem is that amount of really cheap cover ups, 90% of the textures are smeared and the brick walls look like an armada of pasta bakes lined up next to each other.

The MGS series was groundbreaking at one point in time, although the golden years have long since passed. MGS might have been the first human to ever take a dump in a toilet but it missed the bowl completely. If you love Hideo Kojima then go right ahead and disregard what I have said but if you want to play an actual game then steer clear

I hate drawn-out cinematic. I hate Japanese style heroes that can magically be stabbed and shot before getting up to jump ten foot over 2-legged giant pelvis gunners and kill them. It takes the player out of the immersion of Snake's mission and bores me to tears. I loved the first MGS but this one angered me with that ripped-off feeling. CoD4 is infinitely better.

Where to begin? First off, the game still plays like it's from 1998. Why should we be forced to pull two triggers and then a third button just to be able to fire a gun in this day in time? Secondly, for all this bullshit about the graphics being great, not too many "reviewers" mention exactly how limiting these environments truly are; I don't want a sandbox-style stealth game, but when the game uses a myriad of invisible walls and "blocking in" techniques as well as the cheap respawning ideas forcing your hand to complete it just the way Kojima wants you to, it's a little ridiculous. Which brings me to the final failure of MGS4, a lot of reviewers have complained about a lot of the game and then given it a perfect score because it's a Kojima game; I'm not going to bite, Kojima, you are a failed video game developer and a failed movie director if you ever became one. Terrible dialogue and a heavy amount of redundancy throughout many of the cutscenes make what little inspiration that could be taken from them seem trite and when you, as the player, are taken out of control of the game and are forced to WATCH all the great action sequences, it makes me wonder how they can call this a "game" at all. You also have the worst combinations of "anime" logic: grim ambiance mixed with "toilet humor", action scenes where the heroes NEVER DIE even if constantly out of cover and getting shot multiple times (unless they have cancer or something equally dramatic, so they can end with a long monologue). So you have a mix of attempting to portraying a grim future with nonsensical "action". And mechs vs swords.. let's not even get into that.
Dialogue is even worse, as everyone is a philosopher and eager to share their generic insights as the great truths of the world. Great for the younger generations, I suppose.
Another thing that was especially confusing was when they make a shocking revelation, the characters don't react much, only to appear terribly surprised when they go over the same topic AGAIN. I guess this is to make sure that those who fall asleep during cutscenes don't miss everything? So exasperating..

    Then, what about the game?
You've got stealth mechanics that are as good as they were a decade ago, with enemies going from blind to omniscient and omnipresent in seconds.
Snake, for the legend that he is, can barely climb over a box, so you're pretty much railroaded from A to B, not a lot of a freedom.
I don't play a lot of console games, and this is a good reason why: aiming and moving is extremely awkward and slow, leading to "battles" that look extremely awkward.

So yea.. I don't know. I remember loving MGS 1. MGS 3 I couldn't be bothered to suffer through the game parts. Now this. How can anyone put up with this, if not entirely blinded by the "coolness" factor?

Very disappointed! It is a movie not a game! Just finished and, a part from some the technical issues, the in-game graphics looks horrible, very old gen with some horrible low texture. A part from that the interaction tooks approximatively 1/4 of the overal experience (let me say from 8 to 10 hours of real gameplay).

The only redeeming factor of this game was the boss battles which I hoped would only get better after facing off with Octopus but they actually seemed to get easier and more uninteresting until the major faceoff with the two metal gears beating the crap out of each other which was definitely the highlight of the game and I thoroughly enjoyed it for what it was but let's be honest, the play control on the REX metal gear sucked. The last stand between Snake and Liquid where you are punching the crap out of each other was so horrible when it came to play control that I wanted to take my six axis controller and boomerang it at the programmers of this game. I am glad that Kojima will never make another Metal Gear title. What ever happened to the GREATNESS of Metal Gear Solid 3? Metal Gear Solid 3 was definitely the defining moment of the series and we should just leave it at that. First, the biggest problem with this game: this is hardly a video game. This is a movie. It was thought as a movie, but somehow someone somewhere said "nah, let's make it a video game". It was thought as a movie, but somehow someone somewhere said "nah, let's make it a video game". To make up for this media trouble they inserted, I kid you not, more than nine hours of cutscenes. NINE HOURS. It took me 20 hours to finish the game, not being a veteran of the series, and NINE of those were from cutscenes. This is simply unacceptable. This by itself throws my score to under 5. Doesn't matter if you do every other part wonderfully, if you have NINE HOURS of cutscene you have failed as a video game developer, you are a failed movie director who somehow got someone to give you money to make a video game. This is by far the major and most stupid problem with the game.

Second part, more than half of the rest of the game (that includes actual gameplay) is extremely scripted. Point-and-click scripted. Like, things appear in your screen, aim and shoot at them. And QTEs, of **** course. I didn't almost fell asleep in these parts, but I sure wasn't entertained either.

And finally, the writing. I jump into this game head-first after all the glorious reviews I've read about it never having played another Metal Gear, so I thought this was just random crap put together. After finishing the game (only because I had bought it) I decided to look into the story. So it seems that it's not random crap put together, it's fanservice crap put together. So there's these guys, who are clones, and this guy got the arm of the other guy and so got "possessed" by the other guy, and there are these really old guys, and almost everyone dies, BUT WAIT THIS GUY ISN'T ACTUALLY DEAD, nvm he died now, the **** end. And loosely tied with straight out fanservice, they could have Kojima appear in-game and shout "THIS IS WHAT YOU WANT, RIGHT? LOOK, I GOT IT IN THE GAME!" from time to time. There are a lot of things that happen purely for fanservice reasons. Overall bad story, **** horrible dialogs, 2D characters, jokes on the level of kid's anime and a presentation that takes OVER NINE HOURS OF CUTSCENES to present all this ****

If you are a die-hard fan of the series and you MUST know what happens next, well, play it. Why the **** not. Just don't expect much. If you aren't, stay away from this piece of crap.

I can't recommend this - Snake Eater was phenomenal - balanced gameplay, decent length, real progression and sensible cut-scene lengths. Disclaimer* I know most people aren't going to agree with me and think i'm trolling, but this is my honest opinion. And just a heads up, this review is also about both MG4 and MG3.

I have played the third and the fourth installment of this franchise and for the longest time, i just didn't get why people loves this franchise so much.
And to be completely honest with you, i think this entire franchise is simply awful in every way possible.
Why you my ask, well let my break it down for you.

First lets start off with the story.

    It's way to freaking complicated.
Call me stupid or what ever, but i wasn't able to follow along with any part of the story.
And the main reason for that is the cut-scenes are way to **** long! Every time somebody starts talking, i immediately notice the completely terrible voice acting, the god awful script, and bad pacing in the story.
Every cut-scene almost made me fall asleep.
The main character sounds so off, like the voice actor was trying too hard. It almost reminded me of Christian Bale's Batman voice. The worst part of his voice that is.
It's all so very cringe worthy, when the characters are talking like they have to say every emotion possible.
Making all kinds of awkward stuttering noises all the time, which makes the dramatic moments fall flat on it's face. Like they are forcing an emotion that they clearly want the player to feel, even though we all **** know what is happening on the screen. We used our freaking eyes. That's 50% of the dialog making "huh" and "hmmmmm" noises. Just **** stop it already!
The story also interrupts the game-play constantly, And by constantly i mean all the **** time. Just when they are teasing you with a little bit of game-play, *BIiiib biiib*
And you have to listen to this moron explaining every **** detail about every mechanic the game has to offer.
(Why can't i just find out about some of that **** by my self huh?)

There is all so a lot of filler with overreacted motions from the character, Like at the beginning of snake eater when he lands after jumping out of the plain, him landing in that ridiculously cringe worthy pose, and stretching it out for like 10 sec.. Wh.. why????? Why do you have to make it so freaking stupid?!

Second, the game-play (Mostly aimed at Snake Eater.)
It's just way to basic when it comes to combat.
Go behind the guy, and snap his neck, or shoot him with the tranquilizing gun that makes them fall asleep.
Crawl around all the time and hid in the grass, or out of sight.
Don't kill or kill the endless spawning of enemies.
I don't know man, i just don't find that fun. And don't get me wrong, i love stealth games, (Like Hitman, Splinter Cell, Dishonored etc.) Which i have play many many many many times before through out the years of my gaming life.
But this **** just feel dated as heck and down right boring.
It's all so very choppy when it comes to close combat, and aiming with weapons.

But some of the gadgets are really creative, and well thought out. Like the camo suit in 4, and the stamina/food meter or what ever it's called.
But they never feel like they did anything to the game-play that made it fun for me.

    Third, Theme and Verdict.

A big problem i have is the theme of the games.
It's like it doesn't know what theme it's going for.
In this game in particular it's trying to be all serious, but it never hit me emotionally in at all throughout the entire campaign.
For example,(!!!Spoilers!!!) there was this woman that "died" near the end of the game. And the guy who talks to you through snakes eye-patch and that woman had a thing for each other i guess. But it just come out of nowhere, with no build up what so ever in the game. How am i going to feel any emotion if non of these to had any connection at all huh?
And maybe i missed something, or maybe i just have to play the first two games to understand it, but **** that, people starting out on these games needs to know wtf happened between these to in order for this to work.
I'm not gonna freaking waist 100.000.000.000 hours of cut-scenes of my life just to figure that out!!

Look, i can go on on on but the think is, i know why i feel this way about basically all of these games.
And i think the reason why i don't like these games is because i never grew up with them.
And a lot people who did are praising all of them for that reason.
They care about these characters, and know every little detail of the story.
But for me, i just don't give a **** about any of this.
And trust me i have tried so many times to get in to this franchise before, but i'm **** done trying now.
Maybe these game just isn't for me, which really sucks because i really wanted these games to blow me away like they have been doing for millions of others.
But i guess that's just not gonna happen.
So my final verdict for Metal Gear Solid 4(And 3) is a 1.5/10

I know that this game is supposed to be "high art", but it feels like talking to someone who really likes the sound of their own voice. When people say the cutscenes are long, it's not just the actual time it takes, it's the fact that between the stilted and poorly translated dialogue and the repeated, drawn-out exposition I can't even tell you how many times I fell asleep during a cutscene and had to restart it. I do really like a good story in video games, but everything here just feels like a crap anime.

There is a good story here (and the nostalgia of act 4 is a high point) but it's drawn and spread out for the sake of being artsy. And we've got a healthy dose of toilet humor and female characters designed by 13 year olds.

It should also be mentioned that the gameplay sections (less than half the runtime of the game) are straight out of 1998. You still get that weird hunched shoulders running and you have to stop dead to hit the crouch button, otherwise you'll dive. But don't worry so much about that-you're only running from cutscene to another cutscene anyway.

So I think the real questions you need to ask before diving in are: Did you want Solid Snake to be older with a dad mustache? Do you want a 20 minute phone call explanation of each weirdly buxom boss AFTER you kill them? Do you want someone to spell out for you why war is bad over and over? Are you in to the type of story where you might spend several minutes watching a little girl cook eggs? What about the type of story that might culminate in a slap fight between two geriatrics? If the answer to any of these questions is "yes", then go for it.

I had high hopes for this "game" but it turned out to be a boring movie with brief moments of interactivity. Everything you know and love about Metal Gear is DESTROYED by this rubbish. Don't waste your time with this, you think you're progressing through a story, but all it does is keep beating you over the head with a "War is bad" message. This game makes me ASHAMED to be PS3 owner.

The most disapointing game I have ever played more dissappointing than halo 3 ,which was pretty bad I stayed with Sony For my love of this franchise but having seen the end result I may as well have bought a wii.... at least it has games that don't call themselves the best game of all time and then turn out to be.... Garbage.

extremely long cutscenes (i've fallen asleep twice), poor controls (i stand when I want to crouch, i go prone when i want to stand), graphically not up to par with todays games (looks like Gears of War/Ghost Recon 2), must be a fan of the weird japanese humor or you won't get it. you'll either love or hate this one.

Awful, just awful. Boring and totally uninspiring gameplay. This game play style was ok last GEN but please it does not belong on any new Gen machine.

Guns of the Patriots is almost intimidating in the consistent quality of its ideas, invention, and execution...Even by the series' stratospheric standards, MGS4 is a remarkable high point. [June 2008]

If you've ever loved any one of the Metal Gear games, or any moments from the series, there will come a moment when MGS 4 will send your spirits soaring. If you've loved them all, well then there'll be many, many more. It’s a masterpiece.
  3. Guns of the Patriots is a frustrating, fractured game that turns Metal Gear Solid's world upside down several times over, but never changes it.
