At it's best it's almost like a 2D Silent Hill game. At it's worst it's a tedious slog to play through. This is one psychological survival-horror game that nails the survival aspect, but doesn't really deliver on horror. The scares are lacking here, so it's strength lies in it's ability to make you wonder just what the heck is going on. The scares are lacking here, so it's strength lies in it's ability to make you wonder just what the heck is going on. There's almost always something weird, unexplained thing around the next corner.

The gameplay can be a mixed bag. I loved sneaking past enemies and finding new ways to collect supplies, but I hated every time I had to find a way to deal with enemies when there was no way to sneak past. These moments can lead to a lot of frustrating deaths and/or irritating combat.

These moments along with the fact that it's just not scary bring the experience down. However there are still reasons any horror fan should check this one out. It has a compelling (if vague) story and atmosphere that kept me playing through my frustration. There's also some really cool side-content to dig through. Overall it can be frustrating, and I didn't find it scary, but there are still reasons to check it out, especially if you're a fan of the genre.

Lone Survivor might just be the purest survival horror game of this generation, leaving the player to desperately fend for himself, without offering him any clear information whatsoever on what's going on. One-man developer Jasper Byrne manages to use what are essentially GameBoy Color graphics to his advantage, suggesting horrors rather than flatout confronting the player with them, and expertly using creepy sound design to strengthen the experience. The map mechanics suck and it's a shame the game doesn't last very long, but horror fans can't go wrong with Lone Survivor.

This Director's Cut shows very few novelties but Lone Survivor is still disturbing and oppressive on the smaller screen of Vita.

A riveting survival-horror adventure, Lone Survivor: The Director's Cut is the best way to play the utterly terrifying indie gem.
