Costing only $5 bucks, PS3 gamers that enjoy old-school arcade-style gaming won’t find a much better value than the next-generation brick-breaker Hyperballoid HD.
-
The levels are imaginative, but the gameplay's nothing to get hyper over.
-
It is a well realized casual game that is big on the glitz but short on the revolutionary gameplay elements that can really grab you.
-
In short, if classic brick breaking games are your thing, then you should give Hyperballoid HD a chance. With a huge number of levels, almost as many power ups and the inclusion of power downs, Hyperballoid HD is a great way to waste some time.
-
No matter how much variety is in each level, or how shiny the graphics are, the simplicity of the gameplay can become a bit redundant after about half an hour or so.
-
The variations of backgrounds and objects is what makes it worthwhile in my eyes, but I’m willing to admit this may not be the opinion of others.
-
Hyperballoid HD is meant for the casual gamer, as it's a fun, accessible and very affordable piece of gaming.
-
Play UKIt's simple, throwaway fun. [Issue#188, p.87]
-
At first, Hyperballoid HD offers a nice, traditional brick-breaking experience with a ton of levels, but issues like the lack of high scores and leaderboards keep it from being an easy recommendation for its cheap $4.99 price tag.
-
There’s nothing technically wrong with Hyperballoid, but there’s nothing noteworthy about it either. It’s a brick breaking game, but there’s no flair to it. This is the bare minimum of what you’d expect from a title in this genre.
-
If Hyperballoid spent just a little more time in development and had just a little bit more of a budget, it could have been a great addition to the flooded ball and paddle genre.
-
Hyperballoid HD is more faithful to the long tradition of Pong games, but is slower and not as fun as its nearest competitor Shatter. Both games are surprisingly cheap, though – I see no reason why fans of the genre can’t own both.
-
It may not be as showy or flashy as some of its peers on PSN, but for just a few pounds and a tiny 80MB download, it’s a good purchase for retro fans and those who can’t get enough of the sub-genre.
-
What ultimately dooms Hyperballoid HD to relative obscurity is the fact that it doesn't do anything to stand apart from the crowd.
-
Hyperballoid HD's brick breaking is competent but far from compelling, and most of its levels are a grind to get through.
-
Playstation Official Magazine UKReasonably pretty, totally inoffensive, and crazy cheap at 3.19 quid. [Mar 2010, p.107]
