Fracture should be awarded for it's innovation in bringing a new mechanic to a genre that's always been about the size of your guns. For the gamer who likes some strategy with their shooter.

Fracture has a unique premise of manipulating the terrain to gain advantage over your enemies. However, the main problem with this is that it never feels necessary to actually make an impact on the game. It is needed in the game to get past certain areas but this is only because the developers force it onto the player. The visuals at first can look pretty good for its time but when you start to play more of it the entire game looks out-dated, even for a 2008 game. This is a good rental but the story is so weak there is no point in playing it unless you want to experience what the game-play offers. Expand

I didn't get very far into this game before deciding not to play it. Basically, it did not seem play tested by the developers. The first major gripe I had was how forced upon you terrain alteration was. I'm all ok with using the developers tools however they are forced upon you as the only way to play this game....and it is way overdone. The first major gripe I had was how forced upon you terrain alteration was. I'm all ok with using the developers tools however they are forced upon you as the only way to play this game....and it is way overdone. The second issue is that given that terrain alteration is so necessary they get the most obvious and easily accessible controller buttons leaving the shooting, aiming and sprint to get the other buttons....which are more awkward and annoying to use and none of this can be remapped through the options menu. That would have made a huge difference. The third issue is I ran out of ammo and frequently got stuck with weapons and no ammo, and none in sight. Melee didn't work all that great either so another frustration. Then on top of this when you zoom in your character goes all fuzzy and moves ultra slow for some reason. Overall I'm an hour in and four things which are bothering me. Time to put the game down and move on to another one, this one deserves low rating. If you have patience go for it though a quirky part of this game did call to me. I actually like hardcore games but this ones design just put me off way too easily. Expand

More space marine sci-fi shooter malarky, only now you have a tool that can make terrain go up and down! The ability to raise and depress terrain is not enough to base a game around, the way in which it works is lazily implemented; small explosion, and the terrain smoothly transitions to a higher level, or lower (depending on what button your press), no geometry is carved or created, it More space marine sci-fi shooter malarky, only now you have a tool that can make terrain go up and down! Don't bother unless you're easily impressed. The demo is available on PSN, try it for yourself. Expand

This was actually a really fun game, well at least the first few hours were. Even 12 years later it holds up as being a pretty interesting, fun, little 3rd person shooter. It has the one notable gimmick of being able to control the terrain on a whim. Your terraforming powers allow you to raise or lower the ground as you see fit. Even 12 years later it holds up as being a pretty interesting, fun, little 3rd person shooter. It has the one notable gimmick of being able to control the terrain on a whim. Your terraforming powers allow you to raise or lower the ground as you see fit. However the game gets pretty one note pretty fast. There's not a lot to do other than blast your way through enemies and then raising the ground to clear an obstacle, or lowering it to get under one. There was hardly any creativity ever put forth in utilizing your terraform powers. The game needed more puzzles to complete with your powers. Also the mechanics of it didn't work terribly great. I would often find myself lowering the ground I was standing on when I meant to lower the hill in front of me I had just raised. Things like that became frustrating. The camera was far too zoomed in and made it hard to see the things you were trying to clear and how relative your man made hill or spire was to the fence you were attempting to clear. I feel this is the perfect example of a game that would have tremendously benefited from a sequel. I feel like a sequel would have fleshed out and polished all these little shortcomings of this game.

The worst part of this game was the constant onslaught of enemies. It became so annoying towards the end. The second you would enter a new part of a level the game wouldn't allow you to soak in the atmosphere and begin to think about the next challenge before it filled your radar with enemies. On the easiest difficulty the enemies would go down easier with melees than with the weapons which made them feel even more like annoying little gnats and rendered the shooting pointless. Some of the guns were quite original and fun like the one that shoots an underground rocket and detonates on command. Others were incredibly satisfying to use like the black widow which is a grenade launcher that explodes on command.

Overall this was still a fun game that was better than a lot of stuff coming out at the time. The buttons were laid our correctly and you could sprint and it was much more colorful than the brown/green/yellow haze that tainted seemingly every game at the time. The music was really good which is no surprise from a lucasfilm company project. One reviewer that I read stated that the main character of "Jet Brody" is the single most derivative character in all of gaming. Couldn't agree more and can't believe that name made it to the final product. A sequel could have taken the pages out of Halo 2 and allowed you to play a separate campaign storyline as one of the "bad guys." I felt playing as both factions could have been a lot of fun. O well. Here's to sequels we will never get.

Generic in every sense of the word. The terrain deform function could have been interesting if utilized properly.

A jarring experience that tries (and fails) to marry a wildly ambitious gameplay dynamic with some of the most disappointingly generic art design we've ever seen. [Nov 2008, p.106]
  2. Fracture is a solid effort that offers a new mechanic to the shooter formula and allows for some exciting new ways to play. Unfortunately, for what it does right in Terrain Deformation, its issues fall with the basics of the genre due to spotty AI and frustrating aiming issues.
  3. Fracture is a good game, despite its flaws; and although it has a lot of lost potential in its story, its distinctive gameplay mechanics allow us to give it enough credit to say it’s worth checking out.
