This review is only for the online play since I have not played the single player. Dice took the best and funnest shooter available and made almost every aspect of it worse and less fun. The menus all suck, it does not remember your favorite maps so every time you log on you have to re-select what mode and the map that you want to play. All of the weapons are harder ti aim or target, for instance the sniper rifle wanders so much that it is difficult to shoot anything that is not standing still or at short distance. While the maps seem different, most feel exactly the same, most are boring and are too cramped & tight, very few places to feel safe, this is why I don't like modern warfare games, every time you turn a corner there is someone waiting to kill you that you can't possibly know is there. Thanks for ruining my favorite game, I'll trade it in next week for Uncharted 3. Huge disappointment. period. Expand

Yet again another game that takes an excellent franchise and completely stuffs it. I'm currently going through the single player on normal, it would appear that every enemy is an expert marksman and can see round corners, whereas your team-mates (most of whom i would have shot myself a long time ago) appear to fail at hitting a barn door with a banjo. This game is so over-rated! Campaign is poor, multiplayer is fun at first but then you run into everyone using a shotgun that can kill you from 20 foot away. Graphics are great in some area's but then really poor in others and the huge maps are pointless on the PS3 due to the amount of players.

While this may be a decent game, I would not recommend paying any large sum of money for it. In a sad attempt to imitate the blockbuster moments of Modern Warfare 3, all originality is forgotten. As with every shooter there are evil Russians and WMDs. However the single player is not the focus of the game. The multiplayer is decent in that it provides some deep gameplay in large maps. The problem I have with it is the few overpowered weapons and tactics abused by the community. The vehicles are balanced when they aren't taking shots at you from long distance for the entire match, but this is the only way they're used anymore. Many weapons, namely the USAS-12 will have you throwing your controller at the wall. These faults wouldn't effect the experience much except for the simple fact that when you hop into a game, about half the team will be using the same gun with the same attachments, which can take you out of an otherwise immersive game. 6 for sound graphics and deep gameplay, but a poorly written and executed singleplayer and a suite of overpowered/overused weapons that really can take away from the experience. The multiplayer is the main meat, though, and always has been with the Battlefield franchise. Basically speaking, I don't like that either. The matches generally consist of players camping prone in bushes or hiding in shipping containers, but they can't really be blamed for that... Nature of the beast, I suppose. Another annoyance is that a lot of the maps are very tight and don't give you any breathing space. It's a case of; spawn, die, spawn, die, spawn, die... Not so much 'Battlefield' as 'Battleroom'! Ultimately I find Battlefield 3 very frustrating to play. Occasionally a team will pull together or I'll get on a hot streak and I'll have a great, fun match. But that only happens about once every ten games. The rest of the time it becomes a tiresome slog and just isn't fun. And why play a game if it isn't fun? Expand

Not to mention the random "Bad Luck" kills. Also, the PS3 had a plus over the Xbox version: A damn input lag... come on, this worked just fine on the beta, how can it not work now?

Ok, so first off the single player of battlefield 3 is pretty disappointing, the story was pretty predictable and the storytelling was some of the least dramatic or engrossing I have played. 'Between a rock and a hard place' provided some interesting imagery and 'comrades' must be my favourite level but really the single player offering here is poor. However the multiplayer experienceis much better I have had no problems finding matches and the option to use a server browser makes finding my kind of games far easier, everything in the multiplayer game seems to work very well and though it can be frustrating at times I feel that this is due to the inherent competetive nature of online shooter rather than any flaw with the game. My only real complaint here is the quality teamplay capabilities, I have only been able to form parties of up to 4 (I believe this is intentional) which is much smaller than I would like in addition to this our group was often split up apon joining matches often onto opposing teams. The quality of voice communication also leaves some to be desired it is often difficult to understand squadmate and you can only communicate with your squad. For this I must dock battlefield points. Overall though with a solid online component it would be difficult to view this as anything but a good buy for an fps fan. Expand

When you fire a real gun you should be able ADS and follow your target and I find this really difficult. If I turn the sensitivity up my character turns too fast and makes it hard for me to move... 5) Where is the remote control chopper from BC2? 6) The game lacks direction, especially in the bigger multiplayer maps... a good example is that I'm 9 hours in and have yet to find/fly a jet. 7) Quickmatch takes like 6 tries to find a game and the load/death timers seem a tad too long. 8) You know the games in trouble when the reload animation works about 66% of the time... Overall the game is rushed, flawed and full of glitches, most may seem insignificant but when you combine them all... just REALLY hurts the game. The single player is offensively horrible and a flagship example of EA's lack of understanding for narrative. But when it comes to Battlefield it's not about the narrative--it's about the online multiplayer and its amazing!

Battlefield 3's story campaign and multiplayer are two completely different games. They have the same graphic engines, controls, weaponry, and even locations--but they are nothing alike in terms of concept and enjoyment. EA/Dice attempt a low-key narrative about a soldier that uh...sits in a room and talks about past experiences that have marginally anything to do with a terrorist plot 8 hours from execution in New York City. This soldier informs his "keepers" that a man named Solomon is behind the attack. They aggressively...because aggression means drama right?...interrogate the solider about where he first heard of Solomon. We then flash back to the first real level--the vary familiar earth quake level from early demonstrations. Here, we undergo sniper scenarios, fend off an onslaught of stupid yet deadeye bad guys and deal with an IED. Not one time is the name Solomon mentioned.

If you decide to play through the campaign (I did for the trophies) then accept that the narrative just isn't there. The most important details and most exciting level is actually at the end of the game. Up until then--it's basically a series of tasks that lead to cheap deaths and aggravation. I almost broke my controller in-half more than once. Because Dice thinks good lighting means glares and lens dust don't expect to have the easiest time spotting black-clothed enemies from black backgrounds. My tactic was to stand in the open waiting to be shot so I could trace muzzle flashes to enemy locations. Your AI buddies will take the best shooting locations and then fail to do much damage. And if you take the cover assigned to them, they'll push you out of the way. Now, sharp shooting enemies that don't need to raise their guns to get head shots is one thing--but the fact that you can't trust the game to direct you to your next goal safely is unacceptable. Most the game is spent following a specific soldier. An Icon will appear over their head and you must walk within a few feet in order for the game to progress. This is quite annoying when the soldier is standing in an open field behind no cover and every attempt to reach him leads to another death. Sometimes they're on the other side of a battlefield and every enemy you kill is immediately replaced, making it near impossible to get across without dying. What's worse--the game will ask you to do illogical tasks. In the first full level, you're asked to go up on a bridge that provides no cover and man a light machine gun while all 20 bad guys shoot at you. I died 10 times in a row without even reaching the gun. Finally, I crawled to the gun but accidentally hit reload. By the time I had finished reloading, the commander was already sounding retreat... One mission has you escaping to a plane...but the game won't allow you on until your teammates have boarded first. I didn't realize this till I was blocked from boarding by an invisible wall and shot to death. On my next try--I simply laid down behind some bushes until they called for me to board. It was an absolute miserable experience.

Yet with all these miserable attempts to make exciting scenarios no moment in the single player campaign, was any where as exciting as the many memorable events of online play. I was once involved in a five minute firefight in an alleyway. Our team needed to capture the alley to allow for flanking positions on an MCOM station and the other team obviously needed that not to happen. Rockets flew over head, grenades were thrown back and forth, soldiers were dying and being revived left and right--it was amazingly intense and despite coming out on the losing end, I had more fun in those five minutes than in the entire single player campaign. Makes me wonder why they even bothered. Battlefield 3's online experience is awesome and a great update from Bad Company 2. The graphics are neater (even with PS3 doesn't get the full glory of the PC version) and the gameplay is smoother. The levels are great and allow for a wide variety of strategy and challenge. There's no room for heroes or loners--you need to work together to succeed; communication is key. This is a game for those looking to use tactic and cooperation to win. There's plenty of points to be earned without killing a single enemy (mine mostly come from heals, revives, and base captures.) Of course, that doesn't mean you won't find yourself kicking a little extra ass from one game to the next. If you're looking for a chance to just kill-kill-kill--you may want to look elsewhere. But if you're looking for an in-depth battlefield experience--here it is as the name implies--and it does not disappoint.

I'm also not at all impressed with the menu system. For example, you can't quit a server between battles, which means you actually have to start a match in order to leave. This means that sometimes entire teams leave right as a battle starts, leaving you alone to defend until new people join. Also the leveling system is weird, and only allows one pre-set per class, so there is no way to build different presets for different situations.

Well let me start with multi-player (where Battlefield 3 shines): The maps are huge and varied with decent graphics and frame-rate. Unlike COD you can play with little experience of on-line play. Granted you will die numerous times and not kill too many yourself BUT with COD you do get 'owned'. The points system and levelling and numerous types of multiplayer is great, along with vehicles. I generally don't enjoy multiplayer FPS but this I love.

Single player however overall is terrible in my opinion. This is not related to story, that is pretty decent, or graphics, they are cool. It is due to general playability. Firstly I have the enemy within my guns sights (very clearly too I may add) and I shoot but nothing!!! This has happened numerous times. Secondly the enemy can be so far away and dead accurate that you can barely see them and they kill you in no time. This is fine occasionally but it has been this way through most of the campaign. I am sorry but these issues especially, the aiming one, ruined these game for me. BF:BC2 single player was better along with COD MW1 & 2.

Overall it is a bit Jekyll and Hyde but due to being a (mainly) single player gamer I will have to give this a 6.

Battlefield 3 at its core is successful in its biggest shot yet at a better more diverse multiplayer but is the first person shooter market too densly populated?
Graphics: 8.5 - The new frostbite engine gives off some stunning visuals not to be taken lightly but not groundbreaking on the console versions as they are on PC in other words not in the batch of 'best' looking games on console.

Presentation: 8 - New menus and altogether some new implementation in place the presentation within the game is fantastic.
Sound: 8 - Sounds fantastic with the sounds of buildings crumbling around you truly feeling immersive and the sounds of the guns at a high quality.
Gameplay: 7 - Hugely let down by its single player attempt it feels like a high production film with a low production writer. In other words the single player to be blunt feels confused among the gameplay values and in a single player experience which should be sensational its a little disappointing the features of the multiplayer weren't implemented enough into the single player because the multi-player is great.
Lasting appeal: 7 - In the densely populated market of first person shooters and the single player not being one with huge replay value it really depends on how dedicated the player is to the multiplayer.
    Overall - 7.5/8 possibly.

ONLINE ONLY: The game is what it wants to be, a realistic shooter with grit that offers something different for shooter fans sick of the Call of Duty series......Where it falls down is the fact that I was never able to finish a game of Rush before the game crashed and kicked me. It was so bad I traded it in for MW3, that's saying something......Such a shame

This game was really fun the day I played it in a room with 10 people. When playing online without friends, it's not very fun at all.

I wanted to like this, I really did. I love the Battlefield series. Battlefield 1943 really is a shining example of how to make a great war multiplayer game thats balanced with a classy interface, good balance (hits etc) and great graphics. Same could be said for Bad Company 2. However Battlefield 3 really messes up a lot of areas for me. First the graphics are absolutely terrible on ps3/xbox. If you must buy PC version. Saying that though thats not enough to save this game for me. Dice should have focused on making an engine that looks great all across the board. I mean it looks like utter S***. Second the interface is terrible..terrible.. bad company 2's was much more classier. Finally the balance is so outta whack..one shot and your dead unlike 1943 which lets you use skill to land a number of hits to kill and enemy (unless a head shot). Only saving grace is the layout of the maps, the sound design is once again incredible, and of course the weapons, vehicles, etc are great. Servers are stable. As for single-player why bother with that (resources should have went straight into multiplayer) Overall I expected a more polished engine (graphics in bad company and even 1943 are WAY better) and better balance. I would recommend not buying this and saving the money. Buy if you must when it drops in price. Otherwise hold out till Dice gets their act together and delivers a better game graphically and gameplay wise. Expand

Let me start by saying this, the game did not live up to the hype presented by EA/DICE and longtime BF fans. The graphics are nothing special when compared to PS3 exclusives. The single player is meh, same as any other generic military sp. Online I've encountered frame rate issues and occasional freezing. The graphics in online play are also not as good as the single player portion.Let me start by saying this, the game did not live up to the hype presented by EA/DICE and longtime BF fans. Rent first, you may or may not like it. Expand

Hopefully EA reconsiders its approach to toppling Call Of Duty in the future, and allows its games to develop their own personality, rather than imitate something else.

Despite its incredible competitive online play, we can't ignore the shortcomings of its campaign and Co-Op. [Jan 2012, p.66]

The nine multiplayer maps seem to be designed specifically to let players come up with their own creative strategies. Compared to COD, this gives the player a real sense of freedom. There is no such thing as a perfect strategy or a trotten path. [December 2011, p.74]
