Very much a game that hasn't aged well at all. The sequels are all far superior and this feels like a tech-demo of what the games would become. The game has massive potential in all areas but falls on its face in most. The free-running is probably the most fun part of the game as it feels realistic and is enjoyable exploring the massive cities and scaling the towers is very cool. The free-running is probably the most fun part of the game as it feels realistic and is enjoyable exploring the massive cities and scaling the towers is very cool. However the missions are boring and repetitive, the combat is a chore and the best tactic is to simply constantly block the enemy's attacks and late in the game when you are faced with large groups of foes this becomes very frustrating. finally the story goes nowhere, before playing the sequels I thought the Desmond parts of the game were completely unnecessary as they added nothing and simply confused me. Overall I would skip this game if you want to get into the franchise unless you are super interested in it as you wont really miss anything story-wise and certainly not gameplay wise. Expand

No variety, you will do the same things over and over again even the cities look quiet the same. The story is alright but you can see the plot-twist from a mile away so it is not really interesting. Controls are just terrible on the brink to unplayable. What kept me playing were the good graphics and the awesome main assassin missions, the rest is forgettable.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Assassins creed is a great game, and one of the best in its production year. Being the first entry in a franchise, Ubi-soft tried to make use of the Prince of Persia style wall climbing mechanics that we know so well, but did they succeed?..... Yes!

Assassins creed has one of the best graphics in the entire AC series, but some story elements seam repetitive the more you proceed through the game. Sneaking, pickpocketing, eaves dropping....these elements where fun for the first 2 assassination sequences, but for the rest it seamed repetitive.
although, finding your way through the dessert mountain passes was fun, but the overall experience was let down by the un-engaging story.

Just a decent game. The main thing that sucks about this game is the repetitive missions that get extremely boring after doing them 20+ times. Ehhhhh.

Good mechanics. Fighting and climbing was fun. The story was really interesting for me. But the way it's told, with the same objectives for each level, made the game a bore. Took me 10 hours to complete. It's okay, but I don't think I'll play it again.

As the starting point of what would end up becoming one of the most beloved franchises of the 7th console generation, 2007's Assassin's Creed was truly a unique voice in a sea of familiarity; something new and different that no one had really played before. That's not to say the game is perfect by any means, because a decade later, it's far from it.

To begin with, the story is very simplistic but is executed well for what it was: after a mission to retrieve an ancient relic goes horribly wrong, a demoted Altair must assassinate 9 Templars to prove his worth and move his way back up the ranks of the Assassin Brotherhood of the Third Crusades. It works as a progressive story, showing the growth of Altair and how his peers and mentor react to him during this growth. It makes you feel like you're progressing through the ranks and manages to keep you interested through its decent character work and interesting storytelling. Some of the characters can be a bit one-dimensional, and Altair weighs a bit more on the 'bland' scale of Assassin's Creed protagonists. The story can also get a bit stretched out and slow at points, however there is also a massive twist at the end that comes as quite the surprise.

Gameplay is a bit of an oddball, skipping between fun and tedious at random intervals. To begin with, there is no fast travel, which can make going from point A to B very slow. Free-running works but is very clunky and a bit buggy (however not as buggy as some future instalments). Combat is simple and easy to understand and get to grips with, but can be exceedingly slow, as well as a pain when confronting many guards at once. Also stealth can be very slow and not very gratifying, making stealth sections a bit of a slog . On the other hand, there is a decent amount of ways to confront enemies, making every confrontation feel fresh. However, the mission structure is not very fresh. All missions (pick-pocketing, racing, eavesdropping, beat ups) are integrated into the story and are essential to getting to each individual you are assassinating. It's fine when you have to only do it once or twice, but to do it up to 7-8 times? This becomes exceedingly repetitive.

Visually, for 2007, the game actually looks really damn nice. Each city has its own unique feel and atmosphere, with its inhabitants reacting and behaving in different ways to events happening in their cities. It's also structurally impressive, which helps to make the world visually appealing and brings the world of the Third Crusades to life.

All in all, it was a humble beginning for the Assassin's Creed franchise. Whilst this game was really decent back then, the original Assassin's Creed has aged terribly and the flaws really do stick out more then they did. It's not terrible, but it's just not that great either. It's a very 'meh' game.

The game has a rather simple plot and the biggest problem is the gameplay. The idea is great and combat can be pretty challenging sometimes but all in all, this game is the ultimate winner of repetitive gameplay! It will make you do the same things for around 12 hours. In every new city district you enter, you will find completely the same side quests and after only a few hours of playing, I was asking myself: “Didn’t I do this already 100 times?”. It is worth mentioning that jumping controls can be a nightmare sometimes and you can end up on a totally wrong side or worse, in the water, which will cause the last checkpoint loading screen (protagonist is a tough warrior but for some reason he cannot swim). The good thing about this game is that it is just a bit of a boring prologue to a few much better Assassin’s Creed games (II, Brotherhood…).

So many things stopping this game from being fun. In watching the TV advert you might think the game looks innovative, but it seems like the guys who made it just lack the skills and market research to produce a game that is actually fun. It's not fun riding to different cities on a horse while enemies 'attempt' to catch you. Though the graphics are great I don't really care, graphics don't make up for uncreative gameplay on what looks to have been a creative game. Highly overrated by many people who swayed me to get the game, but I'm disappointed that I have to climb the top of high buildings and look around, rather than doing real stealth type missions, the gameplay doesn't even involve much stealth, you could walk around in a populated city, steal someone's knives and the guards will only suspect you. I'm in no rush to get the sequel Expand

The Free-flowing controls are fantastic. Assassin's Creed accomplishes everything it set out to do in terms of making you feel like a parkour master assassin (if that makes any sense)

    Cons:
The story is a real let down. The story in the future is barely explained to us and leaves you with many questions in regards to the setup. In addition, the story in the past is also very generic. A simple, your power has been taken, earn your rights to get it back story is very boringly told and I never felt like it escalated at any point.
The gameplay design is awful. Every chapter (Or memory block as the game calls it) is the same. Travel here, jump off some buildings, help some random guy who is in trouble with guards, kill a dude and then you are done! I never felt like there was any variety.
Even though the graphics are nice, I personally noticed some frame rate drops. Every now and again, I would notice slow down, which really took away from the experience.
There are NO interesting characters. I didn't care for Altair or anything he wanted to do. To me, he felt like a character with no personality, IN A GAME WHERE THE CHARACTER NEEDS A PERSONALITY!!!!

Overall, Assassin's Creed is a very ambitious game and succeeds in some areas, but everywhere else, it falls flat on its face.

There is basically no real variation in the sub-missions you complete before attempting an assassination, as others have noted. The combat is so easy once you get the hang of it that the easiest way to get out of a guards line of site, whether it is 1 or 20 of them, is simply to reduce them all to corpses. This also tends to hollow out the actually assassinations themselves, since stealth/evasion is both superfluous and inefficient. I find it shocking that it received such high reviews from so many professsional reviewers -- a clear indication that very few bothered to play the game all the way through before lavishing it with undeserved praise. But once you get about an hour into the game you have experienced all there is to it. The story consists of doing the exact same set of missions over and over and they are not even fun quests. The developers clearly put a lot of work into the stealth and movement systems but then put that effort to waste with the horrible use of it in the missions. I also did not like the combat system: any time you had to fight more than one guy (which is most of the time) you spend most of your time waiting for someone to attack you so you can block and counterattack which becomes very tedious... like everything else in the game. There are also numerous incredibly annoying parts in this game from heralds shouting the same speech at every other corner in the cities, how very slowly he climbs walls (he does everything else fast, why so slow here?), how many more sword fights there are than assassinations, and most of all the beggar woman who just won't take no for an answer.

This does show promise for the rest of the series but I was very disappointed with this one and suggest skipping over it. My favourite moments from the game were stabbing the overly annoying beggar woman, throwing countless guards off the rooftops, and finishing the game so I could put it back in its case never to be played again.

The game is also poorly optimised for PlayStation 3, with the frame rate dipping often and in some cases dipping so much making the game unplayable and forcing a reboot of the system.

The only thing Assassin's Creed 1 has going for it is that it was an interesting concept for a game, the way the writers created a fiction storyline within non-fiction setting is pretty neat, and the visuals, whilst outdated to today's standards, were great at the time, and the attention to detail in the world's architecture and visual design should be applauded.

The biggest thing is how bad the game controls. They tried to make the most with the controller and I think it's too much. Each button does a drastically different thing. It focused way to much on trying to make you feel like you are actually Altair and it didn't work.

The story is interesting but basic. You can tell it is heavily Matrix inspired. I know the stories get better in the later installments but I'm not going to play those after this game. The Assassin story was also very basic. It was a concept that has been used many times before but with Assassins.

The graphics were good for the time. I think they hold up today honestly. They did a very good job with the graphics but there aren't any subtitles. I know it's not a disappointment to everyone but it was to me. I really just wasn't a fan of this one.

The fighting mechanics are difficult to control, the guards ALWAYS notice you no matter what, and trying to climb something takes FOREVER. I'll admit, I'm not the best player ever, but I'm not far below the skill of an average audience. I take no pleasure in having to retry a mission over and over and over and over and over with the same result. The only reason I'm even trying to finish the game is so that when I play the second one I have a better grasp on the story. Don't buy this game unless you're prepared to become so enraged you want to break everything and then kill yourself. Expand

This game is ass. Its dull repetative and boring and i couldnt even bring myself to finish it. The entire game consists of the same 4 activities and same 3 cutscenes over and over and over with 0 variation. The voice acting is so dull you wont pay attention to anything other than the modern day parts, and the cutscenes feel like they dont progress anything and are just wasting your time. This game is ass. The game graphically has aged amazingly but they ruin it by puttiing terrible colour filters over everything to hide the fact that everything looks the same. The cities are the exact same just with different colour filters. The stealth is terrible and boring, all you do is get caught, run and break line of site, and go to one of the 3 types of hiding places and wait for them to forget about you, it is nothing more than that. The combat is terrible too, its button mashy as hell and the only other method is waiting for them to attack you and pressing one button to kill them. This game is terrible. Expand

  1. Its stunning visual style, high concept story, and wildly open level design are like nothing else, even if too much repetition begins to frustrate in the later hours. It’s a game people will still be talking about five years from now.
  2. With its riveting story, beautiful visuals and surprisingly lifelike world, Assassin's Creed is an incredibly deep, enjoyable game that kept us addicted from beginning to bizarre end.

It attempts a lot of ambitious things and it almost succeeds at every one. But it's apparent that these grandiose ideas may have been a little too much to master the first go-round. But hey, at least the groundwork is laid for a killer sequel -- right, Ubisoft?
