This game is probably the most improved sequel outside of Just cause 2 ever, almost everything the original game failed at this game succeeds massively with. The story is so much better as instead of playing as a faceless assassin like in the first game, you're a charming Italian guy who injects a much needed sense of humor into the game. The environments are more varied and much nicer than the original and the fantastic parkour remains fun. The soundtrack is also very well done and even memorable at times. The game is also very lengthy taking hours upon hours to do everything. Only problem is the best strategy in combat is still to keep countering and blocking constantly and two of the 14 sequences are DLC which is a bit unfair. Other than that though It's a fantastic sequel and great game. Expand

I love the platforming, open world, graphics, characters, customization. So why give this a 6? Well one of the key things that this game relies on is combat. And the combat is so poor compared to other games that it can drag the whole experience down. It could as well be a turn taking combat system.

A great improvement over the already excellent "Assassin's Creed"

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Better and improved. Not the graphics though. The only thing that disappoint me. Is funny how the first Assassin's Creed had better graphics than the second one. However, in the middle of the game (close to the end) the story made me felt like it skipped something important and not enough explanation. Also, the ending is too easy. Punches some random assassin looking guy and then cutscene. I was not expecting to have a boss fight so soon, (Cant even say its boss fight since its so easy...) like i said, i felt like there r not enough explanation even though i fully understand the game. I was expecting more like the......classic assassin way? (i dont know, having a hidden blade fight or at least something like that.) Expand

AMAZING. It's safe to say that you can play this game from start to finish without a break. You can almost never run out of activities to do with all of the side missions and the open world gameplay is great. Awesome storyline and a fantastic main character who never gets boring. This is definatly one of the best games I've ever played.........Nothing is true, Everything is permitted.

Personally i prefer the original but that doesn't mean that this is not good as well. Maybe it was because of the historical location. I think that the middle age of AC1 was better retracted than the renaissance of AC2. In spite of these minor details it's always satisfying to play the AC series. It's a reference of this generation's gaming.

All I have to say is I really hated this game. The story which I found to be truly unique and enjoyable about the first one failed to interest me in any way. And I didn't like Ezio anywhere near as much as Altair. The controls are somehow clumsier, less responsive, and more awkward than it's predecessor. The large amount of content it has is sad because I found that the game was either tedious or boring, and dragged on for way to long. Combat still sucks, actually it may be worse. And honestly it's just nowhere near as good as the first game. I may still play the other games in the series just to see of there's any improvement, but honestly even if I do they'll be low on my to play list. Ubisoft is back with more Assassin ass-kicking goodness. This time, we are put in the world of the Italian Renaissance with our favourite assassin, Ezio! The gameplay has improved, the characters are much more relatable, the story is solid, and everything flows as nicely as the rivers in Venice. HIGHLY recommend.

played this a while back, but I remember this to be a great game. It definitely was more diverse than the first game(gun, flying, etc). I did find the game kind of repetitive, but just stick to the story line, missions and you'll have a good time. There isn't much to do after beating the game though, as if you kill civilians for fun, you'll desynchronize or whatever. A solid 80.

Where the game fails to stand up to the original title is in the assassinations themselves. The first game gave you the freedom to do whatever you wanted. It simply gave you the target and the tools to get the job done. This game insists on pushing you down a more linear, scripted path. You HAVE to climb this part of the wall. You HAVE to remain undetected. You HAVE to use a specific weapon... I really don't appreciate that change and it limited the impact of the game. Ezio Auditore da Firenze is, in my opinion, a big improvement over Altair ibn al-Ahad, who was never given much development, he was just there to be a cool assassin and kill. We live through Ezio's life, going from a brash and energetic teenager, to a wise and skilled assassin, making us truly care for him and play through to see what happens next. Cut-scenes are now actual cut-scenes, the theme and feel of Renaissance Italy is matched to perfection, and we also see development in Desmond and his situation. The first Assassins Creed was pretty impressive, with great ideas and concepts which were ruined by the repetitiveness , however Ubisoft found a way of making the gameplay much more varied, and definitely more exciting. This is a true sequel with around 18 hours of singleplayer and tons of sidemissions and diversions. One of the best games of 2009.

There is a flaw with the AI system, it doesn't even have one, they just react to certain actions you do, nothing more. It's overall a great game, it's better played on console as well. The first game was an interesting and in many ways inspiring idea but ultimately a huge disapointment and initially I can recall avoiding this game, how stupid was I? Everything that was lacklustrous and poor about the original is simply non-existent in this successor. Gameplay is so much smoother and has a much more natural feel to things. The simplicity in this game just wasn't what it was its predecessor, its more flowing and much less frustrating. Also, the variety on offer compared to the first outing is superb! Theres much more to do and so much things to explore and theres new toold and weapons to keep you satisfied it is truely remarkable how much of an improvement this game is. The storyline is the game sees you switch from Altair to Ezio, an Assassin this time however the game is set in Italy. The game follows Ezio Auditore de Firenze who seeks revenge on all those who have betrayed him and his family however he soon uncovers that his families deaths are part of a much larger conspiracy. Ezio's journey will take you to several different locations in Renaissance Italy and you even get to know Leonardo da Vinci! But the storyline isn't all you can do, theres side missions including assassin contracts and races. Yes at times its reptitive but the majority of games fall victim to that but even so its not so reptitive it becomes dull and boring! Visually the game looks great, its not the best on offer but that is irrelevant in all honesty! Theres no multiplayer with AC2 but there really is no need. Not every game requires online to be a success and AC2 is certainly in that category. The bottom line is at the price this game is selling for for those who haven't yet played it you really ought to do yourself a favour and buy it! Its possibly the most improved game Ive ever played because the AC franchise came back bigger, bolder and better, a hell of a lot better, so much so that now the Assassins Creed franchise is up their with the best and rightly so! One of the best games of recent times make no mistake AC2 is a game you should play. Expand

Probably for less than dinner out with your favorite dining companion you can enjoy over 30 hours of gameplay if you dig into AC2 as your next meal. That's how I came across AC2. I despised the first game, which was more or less a tryout of next-gen hardware at the time. The original featured a bland story, somewhat disappointing graphics despite being lauded, and worst of all repetitive game design. The latter is something I think developers battle in any game. Every game has repetition, and every game has certain confines limited by it's own design. Life itself has repetition, but for some reason it's something we want disguised in the form of "fun" when it comes to gaming. Super Mario Bros. on the NES had tremendous amounts of repetition and it's still fun to run through all the familiar levels. No one really complained upon it's release or ever, that the levels are all basically built around the same premise. Personally for this meta-reviewer, games like GTAIV do a poor job of this and I find myself yawning as I strain to finish the same errand missions over and over. AC2 manages to make it feel as if the player is stumbling upon more than just the plot. The discoverable items in the game just kind of fall into your way without much effort. If you want to 100% the game, however, it's going to/ take some serious dedication. The main point here is that none of the scavenging is really required nor does it detract from the meat of the game. Something I hope they expand in the future (I haven't played Brotherhood) is the village monetary system. It was the one thing I searched out during my play through. Every item you purchase including weapons, clothes, paintings, and other collectibles all translate into improvements for your home villa. It's a fun way to express historically, how traded technology and wares would equate to value for parts of the world engaged in trading. The more you trade/buy at other locations the more income you'll receive. Soon Ezio is in the mint receiving some fat pay checks after every 20 minutes of the game clock goes by. This in turn frees you up to scour the world for treasure or just let it be and wait until pay day. The narrative itself is the driving force of this game. Things start off slow explaining the background of the Aldetorre family, Italian culture, and a bit of history. The latter of which takes more of a forefront than it ever did before. Using the "animus" matrix style jack in and time travel method of the first game Ezio is fed knowledge on historical landmarks, people, and dynasties from a team of people in the "real" world. The interface is very well done, and blends easily into the game. While linear, the narrative takes you from place to place with ease and has you exploring the tourist spots of Italy centuries ago; Venice, Rome, Florence... And they're all done with believable style and form, so much so you feel as if you're actually trekking around a replica of historic Italy. The brisk story and colorful characters draw you in with solid acting and one mission to the next. It never gets stale or repetitive, even doing similar tasks you never feel like you're forced to cover the exact same ground all the time. As the first game suffered from a lack of polish, AC2 stands greater than the sum of its parts.Everything comes together here in a package worth far more than today's asking price. If you skipped Assassin's Creed II like I did when it first came out, you can now visit Italy for less than the price of dinner. Expand

Assassin's creed 2 is a huge improvment over the first in some ereas but in others I felt AC1 was better , specifically in the story department. The free running is basically the same in the second game, and although it is very fun to run across Italian towns from one rooftop to the other there are issues that can sometimes become really annoying. In some of the times the game automatically makes Ezio jump to a completly wrong direction causing you to fall to your death. The combat, though still a bit shallow, has improved by much so now you have tons of new different weapons with special finishing moves that add more variety to the action. The game is also longer then the first( 15-20 hours of story missions). The story however is a little overdone for my taste. The ''conspiracy'' stuff wasn't clear at all and it seems the developers want you to get intriqued and curious about things they don't even know themselves. Ezio is a weaker character then Altair in my opinion. The plot is all over the place and new characters come out of nowhere. Ezio is just way too powerfull for a regular guy. how he had become an assassin ubisoft doesn't show. Altair felt like a true assassin that was raised years to become what he was. Ezio becomes a master assassin in practically a year. Overall if you liked the first game you will also like the second. Unfortunately AC2 stumbles graphically, looking very dated at times with constant screen tearing and draw in problems becoming annoyances. Also the missions are rather boring as well, Ezio will usually be helping with numerous problems in exchange for tracking down and killing key templar leaders. Luckly there is more to do in AC2 but the majority of what you will do is probably going to be left sparingly. It's not fair to call AC2 a disappointment, due to the richness crafted from its gameplay and narrative but it's hard not to be disappointed with leftover problems from the original AC and the mainly boring missions, but hey at least each mission gives us more narrative intrigue right? In comparison with the original, AC2 is a prodigious game. Scaling buildings sometimes didn't transmute well even with the ostensible improvement over AC1, albeit overall by itself, a good game nonetheless.

There isn't much challenge in the game, although in this case it doesn't detract from the overall experience. I found some of the puzzles kind of hard, not because of the puzzle difficulty but because if you are playing this game on a smaller standard def tv some of the tiny pictures and text can be tough. This could be used as an excuse to by a 60" 1080p tv though, so maybe that isn't such a bad thing. In my ideal gaming world, they would take the elements of Infamous that were great (the fluid scalability of the environment and action) and mix it with the great story and enhanced realism of ACII. Eventually I took the plunge, but after the first hour of tedious missions, pointless activities, frustrating controls and the pointlessly stupid 'man from future reliving memories of ancestors' BS my heart sunk. They've done me, I thought. Ubisoft are laughing at me; they made me play their first terrible game, and then tricked me into thinking their sequel was different.

And then a turning point game, around about the time when the protagonist, Ezio Auditore da Firenze, leaves Florence and sets up home in a villa. Suddenly, the game felt good. It all clicked into place. It began to be...enjoyable. All which, with hindsight, renders the first hour of ACII as perhaps the most prolonged, convoluted and unnecessary introduction to gameplay that I've ever seen in a game. But, no matter. It was over, and the fun could begin.

AC II has the same annoying sticky controls as the first game and the same dodgy camera, but the missions are much more varied (there is repetition, but nowhere to the same extent as before). The combat has also remained slow and boring, boiling down to counter-attack, lather, rinse, repeat, but in all other aspects the gameplay is fun. What stands out most are the side-missions that send Ezio into crypts and caverns for some Uncharted/Tomb Raider-style platforming, climbing and puzzle-solving. The economy system also works well, encouraging you to bother with side-missions and activities that were just pointless distractions in the first game.

I've tried to explain why ACII is a good game by picking out certain aspects and features but, in all honesty, I can't really put my finger on it. Its whole is greater than the sum of all its parts, and it just feels good to play. And that's enough for me.

Assassin's Creed II is one of the best games of the year in my opinion. The story, soundtrack, voices, and everything about the sound is stellar. At minimum, without doing any sidequests, the campaign comes to about 15 hours. I played the first AC at my friend

Positives: The main focus is the graphical depiction of these beautifully rendered cities and the way the main character seamlessly interacts with them which is also the games main selling point. Then there is also the amusing story and fab voice acting. Negatives: On the downside there doesn't seem to be much else. The missions are mostly monotonous and kinda silly (and at times plain stupid), the only real difficulty is during the rare dungeon moments and some time-trial tasks which to me ranged from pretty cool to utterly dumb and frustrating for no reason. And that's part of the game's problem: many things seem random and for the most part its like you are constantly stuck in training mode. Another issue i have with the game is its fighting sequences. They feel very amateurish and rushed, especially compared to the excellent fights in Batman Arkham Asylum. One other area which the game needed work is its maps and sense of direction and purpose in general. There are times when you have no real idea as to what it is expected from you. Like when you are told to "tag" a villain (follow him) undetected - at some point the game tells you "checkpoint reached" and there is a cut scene which would make you believe that your tag task is over. Yet sometimes its not and when you go near the enemies it tells you mission failed cause you where detected. As for the map itself, there are times when its difficult to understand if a target is supposed to be on a high level (roof), ground floor or within a building, causing for some frustration. The maps also lack actual direction when it comes to going from one city to another yet this was not a real issue for me once i figured it out...still So as you can see, for me, the negatives are far greater than the positives which is a shame cause this game could have been truly epic. Yet despite its many flaws i still had a lot of fun playing it for most part and the climbing/rendering of the towns and cities is phenomenal. Expand

Perfect, it had enough similarities to hold onto what made AC 1 great and enough changes to make it still more interesting but didn't deviate to much from the original formulae :)

Don't let the AC1 fool you. AC2 is different in many ways. Lot of effort has gone into making the cities in the game. A must have/play-and-sell.

While Assassin's Creed 2 does make some improvements to the problems of the first game, it is far from being problem free. First of all, this is not what I would call an "open world" game. There is no replay value to this game at all unless you enjoy collecting useless items. You could spend a weekend collecting feathers, but why?!?! The story is extremely linear, and there are no "choice" moments in the game that give you the feeling that you are having an impact on your surroundings (adding to the whole no replay value factor). Sadly, this leaves the whole game feeling morally disconnected. Even GTA4 gives you the choice to not kill a guy every once in a while. Finally, the combat is way too easy! You will find yourself dying far more often from unintentionally (and frequently) jumping off of a rooftop mid-quest than from getting killed by an enemy. Honestly, get Uncharted 2 or Arkham Asylum if you like scaling walls, stealthy kills, and good story-lines. But if you must get this game, at least the guards in AC2 don't attack you for running anymore... Expand

Assassins creed 2 was a masterpiece and genuinely good fun to play. It sorted out all the problems of the first game and the story was engaging, but the flaw in this is that this is the game that should have been released first. If Ubisoft hadnt made all the mistakes with the first game, then this could have been a whole lot better. that's my opinion anyway.

After playing Arkham Asylum and Uncharted 2 in the past few months, I feel that Ubisoft really should have taken a leaf out of Naughty Dog's and Rocksteady's books with regards to the character movement. Those games make everything flow beautifully and you rarely feel stuck or a lack of control, unlike in AC2. Other things I found annoying were the mini-map, which rotated both the map itself and the characters icon, ultimately becoming disorientating. The game again feels repetitive in a similar way to the first with a handful of features and at times it's unclear as to why you're doing things as you have little or no feedback from the game. If you enjoyed the first game immensely, then this is probably the game for you. If however you're undecided, I'd either rent it first, or invest your money in another game such as the ones I've mentioned above. Expand

I can rebut each and every argument that anyone has toward slandering this game, including main complaints about the control scheme and the lack of multiplayer. The control scheme is difficult to use only to those who do not take advantage of the training ring located outside of Ezio's villa. Any problem you have with the controls can be learned by practicing your combat and your movement skills there. As for multiplayer, the game can be played by one's self, or with a friend or family member. I found it extremely enjoyable to decode the puzzles from the glyphs with my wife, who HATES video games. It has everything a game should have. Action, adventure, gore, sex, violence, suspense, conspiracy and history, while combining all of these concepts into a true masterpiece. Fantastically done. [Games are] about delivering a world that you want to invest your time in, full of characters you can have an emotional connection with, and Assassin's Creed II does that almost perfectly. [Dec 2009, p.102]
  3. Assassin's Creed II is such an improvement compared to its predecessor that it feels like a completely new game, rather than just a sequel. The varied missions really shine and the narrative is very effective, in all it's Forrest Gump-esque glory.
