Probably the best game i've played, ever. The story is interesting and complex, the gameplay is brilliant (fixed every bad thing from the first game) and the graphics make you feel like you're really in 1500 and in Italy. Amazing.

The first game was an interesting and in many ways inspiring idea but ultimately a huge disapointment and initially I can recall avoiding this game, how stupid was I? Everything that was lacklustrous and poor about the original is simply non-existent in this successor. Gameplay is so much smoother and has a much more natural feel to things. The simplicity in this game just wasn't what it was its predecessor, its more flowing and much less frustrating. Also, the variety on offer compared to the first outing is superb! Theres much more to do and so much things to explore and theres new toold and weapons to keep you satisfied it is truely remarkable how much of an improvement this game is. The storyline is the game sees you switch from Altair to Ezio, an Assassin this time however the game is set in Italy. The game follows Ezio Auditore de Firenze who seeks revenge on all those who have betrayed him and his family however he soon uncovers that his families deaths are part of a much larger conspiracy. Ezio's journey will take you to several different locations in Renaissance Italy and you even get to know Leonardo da Vinci! But the storyline isn't all you can do, theres side missions including assassin contracts and races. Yes at times its reptitive but the majority of games fall victim to that but even so its not so reptitive it becomes dull and boring! Visually the game looks great, its not the best on offer but that is irrelevant in all honesty! Theres no multiplayer with AC2 but there really is no need. Not every game requires online to be a success and AC2 is certainly in that category. The bottom line is at the price this game is selling for for those who haven't yet played it you really ought to do yourself a favour and buy it! Its possibly the most improved game Ive ever played because the AC franchise came back bigger, bolder and better, a hell of a lot better, so much so that now the Assassins Creed franchise is up their with the best and rightly so! One of the best games of recent times make no mistake AC2 is a game you should play. Expand

It's a nearly perfect game - the difficulty is right, there are a lot of things to do, and the only problem is when AC stops being AC and tries to be Tomb Raider: running around caves, setting off contraptions, having limited time to jump through hoops in order to get to hidden door. That feels a bit unoriginal, especially to those who have played all those Tomb Raiders through the 90s... But as soon as you get to run on the rooftops again, and the weather is changing above your head, and you hear city life down below, it's all good, and that's a world worth spending time in. Expand

The first Assassins Creed was pretty impressive, with great ideas and concepts which were ruined by the repetitiveness , however Ubisoft found a way of making the gameplay much more varied, and definitely more exciting. This is a true sequel with around 18 hours of singleplayer and tons of sidemissions and diversions. One of the best games of 2009.

'Black Flag' improved on the core mechanics a lot, and presented a more appealing setting, that made me feel like I was on a vacation. The virtual version of Italy in this title can only compete because it was an interesting and culturally very significant setting, but be aware that the core gameplay isn't a convincing reason to recommend this particular game.

The Italian-culture is well explored with beautiful scenery and history embedded into the game.
The plot reveals are jaw dropping at times and unlike many other open-world games with exploitative levels, solving the extra puzzles and searching in hard-to-reach places, dramatically extends the plot and adds a real sense of challenge.

The biggest flaw with this game is the same as the previous game, the over-arching story with Desmond's capture is not explored well, and it treated purely as a plot device to launch you into the time-frame of the game.

At least the first game forced you of of the Animus to interact and learn about the capture and the reasoning. This game just throws you into the Animus, and there's really no need to ever come out of it, and the game will not force you out until the game's basically over. While this allows you to explore and live as Ezio, it means your connection to Desmond thins, and really ceases to be important until the end.

I love the platforming, open world, graphics, characters, customization. So why give this a 6? Well one of the key things that this game relies on is combat. And the combat is so poor compared to other games that it can drag the whole experience down. It could as well be a turn taking combat system.

The Length and quality of the campaign, it is a long game and not linear so you always want to know what comes next. The character, Ezio Auditore da Firenze. He's very likeable, he's a strong and bad-ass when he wants, but he also has his soft side. The recreation of The Rinascita of Italy. Side missions and objectives, which were not present in the previous game. Such as races with the horse, or doing parkour. Assassinating different objectives and collecting different objects for rewards in the game, or trophies. Graphics. Variety of weapons and wide inventory.
    BAD POINTS:
    ● Still can't get with the horse into the city. Present day didn't improve, it's still VERY boring. Stealth is okay, but many would prefer a face to face battle.

In this way, Assassin’s Creed II signifies what makes a true sequel, and does it exceptionally well. It certainly has a few loose wires in its system, but nothing that keeps it from being a wonderful experience that should not be missed.

Assassin’s Creed II is an inspiring success as a sequel, improving and expanding on nearly every aspect and mechanic of the first game, and adding plenty of new and meaningful features into a wonderful mix. It does this with an excellent story with plenty of characters, a good economic system, improved gameplay, a good amount of worthy optional-missions, fantastic cities and atmosphere, and a superb soundtrack. It does have some snags, such as slightly repetitious assassinations, some poorly designed side-activities, and combat that has remained clunky. But fortunately, the experience is not overwhelmingly hindered by those blights. Assassin’s Creed II is one of the most inspiring game experiences of its time, and Ezios quest for vengeance is one that you will not regret taking part in.

The second Assassin's Creed is where the series really hit its stride, evolving into something that could be churned out on an annual cycle. However, with a character like Ezio Auditore Da Firenze, this really isn't a bad thing (my username was inspired by him). The plot picks up right where the first left off, with an entertaining escape from the Abstergo base. As soon as you get into the Animus 2.0, there is a feeling that this game will feel completely different in tone to the last- and that isn't just because of some pretty new visuals.

As soon as we meet Ezio, he oozes charisma. The first level is standard tutorial, but you instantly fall in love with the characters. When Ezio finds out his dad's dark secret, things pick up like they never did in the first game. When Ezio watches his father and brothers die, I had a tear in my eye. This is a story of revenge, but the writing, pacing and action is so perfect that it doesn't feel cliched or predictable at all.

The gameplay has been rightfully improved, with better parkour and free running mechanics and more refined combat, with better, bigger enemy types. The multiple new weapons are badarse, with the double hidden blades being standout combat options. The new economy and money systems are in their early stages of design, but are refined enough to be enjoyable. Once again, there is plenty to do. The open world of Italy is larger than the original's Holy Land and is immaculately detailed. The graphics are spectacular. While the animation and character work is still brilliant, the city steals the show with sweeping architecture and multiple landmarks that are done justice in the Anvil engine. The soundtrack and acting is top notch and the controls fit like a glove.

If there is one downside to the game, it lacks a substantial amount of innovation. Combat still isn't as great as it could be and the stealth is slowly deteriorating. But, you will rarely care. With an excellent (if a little drawn out plot) and entertaining historical events, this is an almost perfect sequel to what was an iconic new IP for Ubisoft.

The first Assassin's Creed was a great start to a great new franchise, and its sequel improves on the first game in every single aspect.

Gone is the repetitive seek and kill mission structure of the original game, introducing a flowing and dynamic story structure that allows for even greater variety and letting you carry out your missions in any way you want. The setting of Renaissance Italy is absolutely beautiful, being one of my favorite video game settings ever (though the actual cities do feel a bit small), and the musical talents of Jesper Kyd is used to the fullest to bring this wonderful setting to life with a soundtrack that is one of my favorites from any game.

Somehow, the story of Assassin's Creed II has managed to surpass its predecessor, feeling even more involved and amazingly presented. The story makes you feel for the characters involved, and though it's of course another quest for revenge against those who wronged you, a story done approximately a billion times before, it's quickly supported by the feeling that you're involved in things much larger than your own story. The Assassin's vs Templars narrative is woven well into the story, as you discover conspiracy and treachery, in the end finding your revenge, but also new purpose as you realize just what is at stake.

The gameplay is almost the exact same as the previous game, but with some new features that make the gameplay more varied and give you an extra edge. New assassination techniques are available, such as the ledge assassination, hiding spot assassination, and my favorite, the air assassination, the most satisfying way to take down a target in the series. In addition to new weapons and equipment, such as multiple melee weapons, smoke bombs a friggin gun, you are supplied with two hidden blades later on in the game for double the assassinating power, allowing you to take down two enemies at once, and for the more lethal assassin, they can be used in open combat and their counter moves are always instant kills, even for the biggest and baddest enemies in the game (if you can nail the very small counter window they have).

More freedom to use your new skills is also appreciated, with the open-ended level and mission design allowing for creativity in your missions. Perhaps you'll follow your target from the roof, or maybe you'll follow them using a group of courtesans to distract guards, and once you're there, will you drop down from the roof in the middle of the circle of guards to take them out, or will you use a smoke bomb to cover yourself during your kill and your escape?

A new economy feature feels more involved, as well, allowing you to purchase new weapons and armor, or even change the color of your assassin garb. Maces, spears, daggers, swords, and axes are all available to use in combat, providing great variety to settle violent disputes.

Assassin's Creed II is a prime example of what a sequel should be, improving on the previous game in every way and adding new additions that feel right at home. The game holds a special place in my heart, and is one of my favorite games ever. If you can only play one Assassin's Creed game in your life, make it Assassin's Creed II.

I can rebut each and every argument that anyone has toward slandering this game, including main complaints about the control scheme and the lack of multiplayer. The control scheme is difficult to use only to those who do not take advantage of the training ring located outside of Ezio's villa. Any problem you have with the controls can be learned by practicing your combat and your movement skills there. As for multiplayer, the game can be played by one's self, or with a friend or family member. I found it extremely enjoyable to decode the puzzles from the glyphs with my wife, who HATES video games. A nice addition to the game is UPLAY, a trophy style system introduced by Ubisoft that allows you to "buy" extra things for your game (like extra throwing knives, an Altaïr costume and an exclusive map that lets you explore the Auditore family crypt as well as getting you a nice wad of cash) once you have achieved certain conditions in game. Also the missions are rather boring as well, Ezio will usually be helping with numerous problems in exchange for tracking down and killing key templar leaders. Luckly there is more to do in AC2 but the majority of what you will do is probably going to be left sparingly. My biggest issue with the game is the terrible combat...it just feels clunky and basically ends up as button mashing, even though there is some potential for strategy. There isn't much challenge in the game, although in this case it doesn't detract from the overall experience. I found some of the puzzles kind of hard, not because of the puzzle difficulty but because if you are playing this game on a smaller standard def tv some of the tiny pictures and text can be tough. This could be used as an excuse to by a 60" 1080p tv though, so maybe that isn't such a bad thing. In my ideal gaming world, they would take the elements of Infamous that were great (the fluid scalability of the environment and action) and mix it with the great story and enhanced realism of ACII. After playing Infamous ACII feels slow and sluggish to respond, but ACII undoubtedly had a better story and more diverse missions. Overall, this is a really good game that could have been great. Eventually I took the plunge, but after the first hour of tedious missions, pointless activities, frustrating controls and the pointlessly stupid 'man from future reliving memories of ancestors' BS my heart sunk. They've done me, I thought. Ubisoft are laughing at me; they made me play their first terrible game, and then tricked me into thinking their sequel was different.

And then a turning point game, around about the time when the protagonist, Ezio Auditore da Firenze, leaves Florence and sets up home in a villa. Suddenly, the game felt good. It all clicked into place. It began to be...enjoyable. All which, with hindsight, renders the first hour of ACII as perhaps the most prolonged, convoluted and unnecessary introduction to gameplay that I've ever seen in a game. But, no matter. It was over, and the fun could begin.

AC II has the same annoying sticky controls as the first game and the same dodgy camera, but the missions are much more varied (there is repetition, but nowhere to the same extent as before). The combat has also remained slow and boring, boiling down to counter-attack, lather, rinse, repeat, but in all other aspects the gameplay is fun. What stands out most are the side-missions that send Ezio into crypts and caverns for some Uncharted/Tomb Raider-style platforming, climbing and puzzle-solving. The economy system also works well, encouraging you to bother with side-missions and activities that were just pointless distractions in the first game.

I've tried to explain why ACII is a good game by picking out certain aspects and features but, in all honesty, I can't really put my finger on it. Its whole is greater than the sum of all its parts, and it just feels good to play. And that's enough for me.

Assassin's creed 2 is a huge improvment over the first in some ereas but in others I felt AC1 was better , specifically in the story department. The free running is basically the same in the second game, and although it is very fun to run across Italian towns from one rooftop to the other there are issues that can sometimes become really annoying. In some of the times the game automatically makes Ezio jump to a completly wrong direction causing you to fall to your death. The combat, though still a bit shallow, has improved by much so now you have tons of new different weapons with special finishing moves that add more variety to the action. The game is also longer then the first( 15-20 hours of story missions). The story however is a little overdone for my taste. The ''conspiracy'' stuff wasn't clear at all and it seems the developers want you to get intriqued and curious about things they don't even know themselves. Ezio is a weaker character then Altair in my opinion. The plot is all over the place and new characters come out of nowhere. Ezio is just way too powerfull for a regular guy. how he had become an assassin ubisoft doesn't show. Altair felt like a true assassin that was raised years to become what he was. Ezio becomes a master assassin in practically a year. Overall if you liked the first game you will also like the second. This was my first Assassin's Creed game and it's what got me hooked onto the franchise. The variety of game play was astounding and definitively a improvement upon the first. The way Ezio draws and sheaths his sword was clunky, his robe acts like it's made of plastic (there's not much sway to give the illusion of an actual robe like the first game), and flamboyant dress of Ezio (with the unnecessary cape) makes him stick out like a sore thumb in a crowd of NPCs. Small details like this may seem dismissive but for me it gives me a sense in the quality of the game and how much time developer's spend on it to improve the tiniest details. Though it is superior to the first game but feel the developers took a backseat approach detail and quality wise in making a environment that was as less believable than first Assassin's game. Expand

This game is great, specially the storyline. They create a great bound between the player and the character. The graphics are awesome, the sound is very good, the gameplay is diversed and is not repetitive. The only thing I didn't like was the whole city-travelling thing. It's a very good game overall, I'd give it a 8,5 if I could. I'll give it 9 only because it seems unfair to give it an 8.

Renaissance Italy is brought to life beautifully in this game and watching Ezio jump and climb all over these historical landmarks is a thing of beauty. Visually its meant to be taken in as a whole because when you get up close on characters and objects things do look pretty ugly but you can mostly forgive that for how the game looks as a whole. The freerunning gameplay is very fun but doesn't always work the way you need it to. This game is definitely not flawless and I wasn't surprised that it didn't win game of the year but I wasn't surprised that it was nominated. I would highly recommend this game to most types of gamers. Expand

played this a while back, but I remember this to be a great game. It definitely was more diverse than the first game(gun, flying, etc). I did find the game kind of repetitive, but just stick to the story line, missions and you'll have a good time. There isn't much to do after beating the game though, as if you kill civilians for fun, you'll desynchronize or whatever. A solid 80.

Personally i prefer the original but that doesn't mean that this is not good as well. Maybe it was because of the historical location. I think that the middle age of AC1 was better retracted than the renaissance of AC2. In spite of these minor details it's always satisfying to play the AC series. It's a reference of this generation's gaming.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Better and improved. Not the graphics though. The only thing that disappoint me. Is funny how the first Assassin's Creed had better graphics than the second one. However, in the middle of the game (close to the end) the story made me felt like it skipped something important and not enough explanation. Also, the ending is too easy. Punches some random assassin looking guy and then cutscene. I was not expecting to have a boss fight so soon, (Cant even say its boss fight since its so easy...) like i said, i felt like there r not enough explanation even though i fully understand the game. I was expecting more like the......classic assassin way? (i dont know, having a hidden blade fight or at least something like that.) Expand

AMAZING. It's safe to say that you can play this game from start to finish without a break. You can almost never run out of activities to do with all of the side missions and the open world gameplay is great. Awesome storyline and a fantastic main character who never gets boring. This is definatly one of the best games I've ever played.........Nothing is true, Everything is permitted.

Graphics are stunning and the environments are extremely realistic when I went to Italy and visited the cities that were in the game, I was like, "Whoa! These buildings and landmarks actually look exactly like what I saw in the game!!!" and that was really cool. So one of the biggest highpoints is the detail put into making the cities come alive, and you do spend almost all your time in the cities so it was a good call to really focus on making them more immersive.

While some of the gameplay does get blatantly repetitive at times (only reason why it's not a 10), this is still a great open-world/sandbox game with a lot of different weapons and techniques to try out as the game progresses and a healthy amount of side missions to keep you busy if you don't want to continue the main plot just yet. I loved the whole upgrading system for your city and decorating/improving your villa was fun. Moneymaking was really easy this way and I was raking in the dough halfway through the game, and financial security even in a game is important. heh

I thought the story was really interesting, and the way it played into actual historical events was fantastic. The characters were all well done too, with great voice acting, and it's interesting to see how the web of relationships goes along. Not too much interaction and depth beyond cutscenes for the NPC characters though.

The environments are more varied and much nicer than the original and the fantastic parkour remains fun. The soundtrack is also very well done and even memorable at times. The game is also very lengthy taking hours upon hours to do everything. Only problem is the best strategy in combat is still to keep countering and blocking constantly and two of the 14 sequences are DLC which is a bit unfair. Voice acting is decent and the main character has some depth. That said, the game throws a lot of side characters into the mix, and they never really get fleshed out. Over all, I found the story to be a load of disconnected New Age mumbo-jumbo nonsense which is a shame considering the potential of a setting as rich and beautiful as Renaissance Italy.

Now let's get to some positives; like I said, the game's world is absolutely beautiful and it's hard to not get immersed in it with all the somewhat "historically accurate" information the game offers. It also runs at a fairly stable framerate throughout, screen tearing is not too bad and the draw distance is very impressive. Bottom line: If you're into video games that actually require skill and timing and despise the influence Hollywood has over AAA-titles, then this game is probably not for you. "Counter kill" ad nauseum.

I still find the gameplay repetitive at times, the whole control-scheme still needs a bit more polish and the new inventory- and shop-system feels clunky. For example, once you've purchased a new armor, you instantly equip it and the only way to equip another armor again is to gallop all the way back to your mansion. But over-all, I must give it to the Ubisoft Montreal studio, they've really made a huge improvement in their relatively new series.

    Pros:
The visual style is ABSOLUTELY FANTASTICAL IN EVERY WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The art direction made me feel as if I really was in 1400s Italy and really immersed me in the game.
The story, unlike the first game, is actually very well told! In the future, the story escalates and picks up from where the first game left off and gets quite exciting as we meet new main characters. Also, the story in the past is a massive improvement, a very likeable main character and a well told revenge story definitely made me invested in finishing this game.
There is enough content in the game to keep you playing. There is a bit more variety in what you can do. There are more collectibles to find, secrets to unlock, more varied side missions and a generally vast open world!
ACII retains the same excellent controls from the first game and feel like a natural fit for this game.

    Cons:
Even though I didn't mention this in my review of the first game, the combat can get stale after a while and you will go out of your way to avoid fighting whenever possible.

Overall, ACII is a massive improvement of the first game and I would definitely recommend it to EVERYONE EVAR!!!

  3. Assassin's Creed II is such an improvement compared to its predecessor that it feels like a completely new game, rather than just a sequel.
