Filled with enough chaos and wicked humor to forgive the slight reliance on platform clichés, Whiplash really is a hell of a game. With a little more polish before release, this game could have been a true masterpiece.
  2. It's not insta-classic material, but it is a fun game that exhibits solid gameplay and a good sense of humor.
  3. 80
Its humorous tone and extremely satisfying random destruction really make it worth playing.
  4. 80
It's addictive, funny, and will make you feel more than a little sad when it's over.

Whiplash's style takes it a long way; hell, any title with the power to make PETA smile and fume at the same time has got something going.
  6. There are flashes of comic genius in Whiplash, but equally as many missed opportunities. While this game is good, it narrowly misses the mark.

Look past some simplistic visual designs and enjoy the bright, unique style the artists have worked into Whiplash and you'll find a solid game that entertains after you've had your fill with the holiday A-lists. [Jan 2004, p.66]
  8. Only a single player game with not much to offer in comparison to better known platform franchises.
  9. It hits the nail on the head in terms of entertainment. It may be very familiar, it may not be the best of its genre, but it is excellent mindless fun.
  10. It doesn't have depth or any mind-blowing mechanics, but the destroy-everything-in-sight gameplay is more rewarding than you'd expect.

Coupling some jokes that get old and haggard with an assortment of repetitive running and jumping tasks makes for a disappointing experience.
  12. A decent foundation for a possible series. Unfortunately, lackluster navigation, combat maneuvers and repetitious sound effects, amongst other slights weaken this game significantly.

There's a surreal sweetness to Spanx and Redmond that makes everything in this game very enjoyable. [Jan 2004, p.113]

While I love Whiplash's over-the-top concept and humor, its gameplay and graphics languish in a sea of averageness. [Jan 2004, p.128]
  15. The inclusion of a role-playing-like level system adds a small amount of depth to an otherwise shallow title.
  16. 68
Its not long before you realise you're pretty much just running around the level bashing things senselessly, interspersed with the good humour just to make sure you don't fall asleep.

Lead characters aside, another element that makes Whiplash so amusing is Genron itself. Although animal testing is hardly a subject to be laughed at, the game gets away with making fun of it because it's the humans themselves that are portrayed as being dumb animals.
  18. There was an obvious attempt at dispensing some decent puzzles and plenty of skewed humor and while the humor works, the overall game just doesn’t.
  19. Visually, things are on the sloppy side. The collision detection is awful and there’s a distinct lack of detail to practically everything including the menus, which are rendered in fuzzy detail.
  20. There are hundreds of more interesting games to play rather than waste your time on something as average as Whiplash.
  21. Unfortunately, humor is the only thing Whiplash seems to really nail, and chuckles alone aren't enough to carry an entire game.

The gameplay is tedious and repetitive, the graphics are sloppy, and the story isn’t entertaining enough to allow the player to look beyond the game’s flaws.

While it's fun to destroy everything from computers to cafeteria trays, the action gets old, fast. [Jan 2004, p.37]
  24. The more you play the more both the gameplay and Redmond’s catchphrases err on the repetitive side.
  25. 60
While this is certainly not a huge title and there's little innovation, I must admit I enjoyed it.

Unfortunately, its excellent concept, experience system, and humor aren't enough to drag Whiplash out of a sea of average gameplay. [Jan 2004, p.60]

Gamers will revel in the destruction that unfolds as they guide Spanx and Redmond through the Genron labs, but you soon realise that the humorous touches are hiding a basic and rather childish title. [Mar 2004, p.119]
  28. The game's single biggest problem is that while it starts off by making you laugh most of the time, it's not long before it slips into a formulaic procession of irregular gags and the same basic gameplay elements cut and pasted from start to stop.
  29. Cheat Code Central

There's not really a lot of control in this game. All you really have to do is get ready to do some button mashing when you find yourself in a combat situation.
  30. Edge Magazine

Despite the simplicity of the puzzles, it's an unnecessarily bewildering game for the first hour or so. There's an RPG's worth of menus, full of abilities and stats you just don't need to know about yet. [Mar 2004, p.109]
  31. As good funny and entertaining as Whiplash is off the bat, I don’t feel I grew as a result of having played it, and might have even shrunk a little four hours in.
  32. Eidos has produced a turd of such magnitude that there is no adjective to describe my overwhelming distaste for this game and many of the things it stands for. [Jan 2004, p.134]

The gameplay is fun, the two main characters are an entertaining duo. although i remember little of what the game was like, when i first played it i do remember it being great. i wish they would do a sequel or at least remaster or rerelease the game for newer consoles. :( Full Review »
