Take the role of rogue E.O.D. operative Nick Kang, assigned to the task of taking out the merciless Russian and Chinese crime syndicates plaguing the City of Angels. The action is non-stop and you can never repeat the same mission twice as you play through a branching storyline that takes place across 250 square miles of accurately recreated Los Angeles. 1. The shooting control takes some getting used to, but stick with it and you’ll advance through a solid plot laced with a meaty hip-hop soundtrack, celebrity voices, and...drumroll...a playable Snoop Dogg! You’ll never need MapQuest in L.A. again.

Striking a balance between cinematic, story-based gaming and free-roaming fun is harder than most people realize, and True Crime manages to pull it off in a way that brings excitement, challenge, and even a few laughs here and there (some of the voice work, particularly that of one Mr. Walken, is priceless).
  3. So from a game design point of view then True Crime is a rare refreshing change from the norm; thankfully True crime features strong gameplay to actually back it up with a number of improvements to the "GTA3" rulebook and a smattering of innovative ideas.

You won't spend as much time with True Crime, but that time will be spent enjoying nicer visuals and a very deep story experience, as opposed to flipping cars across parking garages.
  5. True Crime is, thankfully, not a total failure, although one does get the impression that with more development time and more polish to individual aspects (aside from the impressive driving sections), the game could’ve been a masterwork.
  6. A game that simply lacks polish and, in some cases, feels unfinished. It makes decent attempts with its different styles of gameplay, but none of them are particularly well done, and the game's storyline doesn't tie them together in a satisfying way.

Half the game it should have been. Whoever came up with the inventive level structuring or spent months mapping LA has every reason to be furious with the lacklustre implementation of their ideas. [Christmas 2003, p.106]

This time you are on the other side of the law as a sort of renegade cop. It is cool the things you can do like flash a badge, shoot warning shots, manually aim, and you get random crimes from your dispatch like street racers, cock fights, and even bum brawls Great Game, a must rent if not buy. I liked the game, my biggest problem with the game is that i feel like i spend more time on loading screens than playing the actual game.

I must say, I didn't think I could be surprised at how much I could enjoy such an old game. Out of all the GTA clones out there, this one sureI must say, I didn't think I could be surprised at how much I could enjoy such an old game. Out of all the GTA clones out there, this one sure drops the ball, but still walks away with some redeeming features.

Story is serviceable enough with a very good cast for the era it was created. Nothing overly special though. Visuals and sound are pretty standard for this generation of open world games. It is lacking some quality of life features that the GTA franchise was know for. Where True Crimes stands out is the game-play as a cop. Controls are clunky as hell, but the ability to arrest people and trigger some pinpoint aiming does make for a fairly unique experience.

What really lets this one down more so than the controls is the overall lack of flow in the level design. When having to hit the streets to stop crime, it feels more like busy work than authentically operating as a cop.

There are some game-play features that are different enough to warrant a play through if you are a fan of the open world genre. But this one falls just short of being a staple in video game history.
