Clever premise; disappointing delivery. The plot is fairly simplistic and exceedingly linear, towns consist only of single images where you select whom to talk to from a menu, and you generally shouldn't expect any frills (like an equipment system). Opportunities to sell your soul are few and far between, and frankly not as rewarding as they sound; you get what you pay for, and then the game just..ends. Gameplay is somewhere between Ogre Battle and a more traditional grid-based tactics game. Production values are pretty low; for fans of the genre, the graphics probably aren't so much an issue as certain amounts of awkwardness in the interface and a general lack of overall polish. Voice acting and translation (very nonliteral) are pretty good, and Japanese tracks are included, as we've come to expect from NIS.
I enjoyed this game, but I'm a rather extreme fan of the genre, and I was constantly thinking about how much better it might have been.

poor story and overly complex battle system that sums up this game nicely . Not to mention the tone of the story is all over the place . It has all these cutesy characters and slapstick comedy but deals with heavy themes like genocide and rape rather poorly i might add.

The combat system consists of using squads but only the squad leader shows up on stages and each leaders have their own tactics and combos a melee type character leader has 1 range attack and ranged character have 4 ranges it can be upgraded to 5 ranges using tactic from the menu instead of attack 'however with a ranged character as leader if the attack is carried from a distance any meleeThe combat system consists of using squads but only the squad leader shows up on stages and each leaders have their own tactics and combos a melee type character leader has 1 range attack and ranged character have 4 ranges it can be upgraded to 5 ranges using tactic from the menu instead of attack 'however with a ranged character as leader if the attack is carried from a distance any melee type character in the squad positioned in the front won't attack the enemy' there's front, middle and rear positions in a formation each character has a combat skill according to its position on the squad mixing characters types in a single squad will generate different combos, each squad has its own room, there is different types of room each has its own effect on the squad, rooms are upgradable using decors but they disappear after each battle there's up to 9 slots for 3Front 3Middle 3Rear characters towards the end of the story however room design is messed up there's a lock option to not change the room but there's a little chance to get the desired formation in a specific room quickly apart from the room design mess there's too many long cutscenes almost before and after each battle and in each city before entering and leaving skip option is really useful here and gig's dialogs are cool! 1. Once you overcome the learning curve, it's easy to enjoy Soul Nomad's brand of charm and humor. [Oct 2007, p.118]
  2. Soul Nomad is a fun game, and one every NIS fan will enjoy. For others trying to find a unique SRPG with an emphasis placed on characters and interaction, look no further.

Soul Nomad is a surprisingly radical departure from type for NIS, and it's largely successful. It's just more frustrating than it needs to be. [Oct 2007, p.57]
