One of the best resident evils out there. It keeps you on edge every single second. Though it sometimes can be quite the challenge. I love it!

Its a 9. Gamecube is a 10 out of 10 because its looks quite a bit better but over all this is a great port of what is in my mind, not only the best game of the year, but my favorite game of all time!!

This is a really good game. I can't believe someone on here complained about the controls, especially since the horrid controls of every other Resident Evil game makes them nearly unplayable to a lot of people.

Som bits were the most exciting, intense and terrifying moments in gameing. Others were fun but let the game down. it had laid the template for a great game. But trust me this game is worth it for the great bits.

The best game I have ever played and a vast improvement on previous RE titles. I was hooked from the start to the finish. The graphics are great, the plot scary, the gameplay is long and replayable and I'd definitely recommend buying it. Only a couple of very small nagging points, but hardly worth mentioning - ALMOST FLAWLESS...!

The last/best atmospheric game of the classic franchise. The number four part of the franchise, surprise the player with a magical tension , and solid gameplay. Set in Spain is also a great move for the series, expanding the setting is always important. Even the graphics seems to be comparable to games of the 360 and PS3 very detailed and fresh. Best in the series after 1 and 2 .

For starters there are no longer fixed camera angles in areas the camera is now at the back of the characters, most of the guns have laser sighting and scope to help with aiming and the zombies have been replaced by humans who are mind controlled and infected by Las Plagas. All these changes reduce the scare factor of the game compared to its predecessors but also makes the gameplay more action orientated, higher paced and makes the controls more responsive and making the A.I more diverse. The Ganados the infected humans you fight in the game are alot more smarter than the zombies and the way they gang up on you and attack you is alot different than the predictable zombie grabbing and blood sucking from the previous games. The Ganados can hit you with their melee weapons either by stabbing you or throwing it when they are far away and even throwing dynamites at you. On top of that those villagers also react differently to your gun shots shooting in the leg will make them limp, shooting them on their arms will cause them to drop their weapons, the Ganados can also get stunned during the combat which will allow the player to go near them and perform some special unarmed moves. All these changes and additions make the gameplay more fun, diverse and less repetitive compared to the previous Resident Evil games. The players finds alot more ammunition and healing items in this game as the enemies that are killed almost always drop the healing items, ammo and money and treasure as well which the player can use to buy and upgrade weapons from a merchant who appears throughout the game. The game also has some interactive cutscenes that make you think you are actually involved in then game even when you are just watching the cutscenes which is also a great addition. There will be also points in the game where you go through areas while protecting a defenseless girl who moves with you she can't fight but she can get hurt and you can use your herbs and First aid sprays to heal her and she will also be helping you solve some puzzles in the game these levels of the game may be frustrating at times but they are still fun and entertaining. The scare factor may have been toned down but that doesn't mean RE4 did not give me the creeps there were alot of points in the game that made me jump and scared me s**tless the part where you first fight the underwater monster, the part where you fight the El-Gigante, the part where you fight the bugs in the sewer and specially the part where you first fight the Re-generator all those moments just scared the crap out of me the first time the played this game. However the scary moments in this game are far less than there were in the previous Resident Evil games. The story is really good despite the only connection being between it and the previous RE being the characters Leon, Ada and Wesker and the mentioning of Umbrella otherwise its a completely different story. The story is far from epic but it is still well told and well written. Creating a chemical to control the humans than taking over america and taking over the world may sound too gimmicky and may have also been a used up formula for the stories in games but it was executed well here. The graphics are really good considering it is ps2 ofcourse ps2 has done better with God of War and MSG games but still the graphics look very good however the ps2 graphics still don't hold a candle up to the Gamecube version but that is because GC had a better graphic card the the PS2 and graphics don't totally make a game. The game's music and sound effects are just superb always suit the environments and the sound effects do a good job of building up tensions and giving the creeps. The voice acting is good however the dialogue can just be cheesy and corny at times. Apart from the main story the game also has the awesome and fun Mercenary Mode, Assignment Ada (a small mission for ada) and the ps2 version has two new extras which were not in the GC version the Movie Browser where all the game's cutscenes can be viewed and the Separate Ways in which you play as Ada where she explains her motives for being involved in the main campaign. These extras just makes the players come back for playing this game for hours and hours and having fun and really increasing the game's already high replay value and lasting appeal. Overall Resident Evil 4 is a great achievement on the part of CAPCOM. 9.5/10 Expand

The attention to detail to the overall package is outstanding, with a perfectly paced story that keeps bringing unexpected surprises in both the storytelling and the gameplay. this is a great feat especially considering the main story is more or less 15 hours long, not counting the bonus material that extends the fun with minigames and side stories. level design is extremely well done and atmospheric, character design is intriguing, the music emphasizes the horror produced by the atmosphere, and the gameplay involves more than simply running and shooting thanks to small but effective variations and some exploration. My only small complain is that while the voice acting is very professionally produced, some of the dialogue is a bit cheesy for a game with serious themes. perhaps the few bad lines of dialogue are intentional from developer capcom as a trowback to the horrendous dialogue in the earlier resident evil games but this is only a very minor thing. A slightly more significant complain i have is that the control scheme is just a bit dated and slow, but effective nonetheless. Expand

And you could choose limited ammunition if you don't customize your weapons making the game more difficult than usual. The downside of the game is ASHLEY because she is basically useless; so useless that LEON did not kiss on the end of the game. This is the Resident Evil game that proved the franchise could be reinvented and reinvigorated without even having to needlessly throw zombies onto the screen. The new enemies were just as merciless, brutal, and horrible to face, and it worked well. Add in major adjustments to controls, camera, and the atmosphere- the moodier the better it seems, and you've got quite the winning formula.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First off, I played through this game AT LEAST 5 times. I had just as much fun the first time as I did the fifth time.

Resident Evil 4 is not too horrifying, except one level towards the end. This is where you fight dark blue dagger-toothed monster things that cannot be killed, unless you shoot 3 of the parasites on their back. You can cripple them by shooting their legs off, but they regenerate and grow back. (Thus, the reason they are called regenerators.)

Enough rambling. The game as a whole has decent-okay combat. There are around 12-15 guns you can buy, not counting the unlockable ones that you can get after beating the game.

The small amount of people who gave this game poor reviews don't seem to have played the game before. There is, in fact other modes than story mode. Assignment Ada, and Missionaries. Missionaries is just a free-play mode where countless hordes of zombies are hurled at you until your chopper arrives. Pretty fun to do after you beat the game and don't feel like playing it again. Assignment Ada isn't that fun, to be frankly honest. Its just replaying a mission as a woman named Ada, except its 500 times harder. The story is pretty long, and there are multiple paths that you are able to take during the game.

The enemies you face consist of the generic zombie, (a spanish farmer that tries to kill you with pitchforks and knives.) cult group members, (pale people in black cloaks that try to strangle you), enemies with wolverine-like claws that have their eyes stitched shut, and scary-ass chainsaw men/women with bags over their heads. They actually might be scarier than the regnerators I talked about earier.

All in all, this is a GREAT game. I hope this review helped. :D

It changed the formula a bit and sadly later games continued this trend to become more like Michael Bay making Resident Evil presentation-wise and closer to Call of Duty gameplay-wise. There is the rumor and some evidence that they want the Call of Duty sales numbers so they make the games more similar. This however can not be hold against this game. The story features Resident Evil 2 veteran Leon S. Kennedy who is now a government agent. He is searching the missing daughter of the US president that is missing without a trace. He is in a remote region in Spain as there was a rumor that she was kidnapped by a strange cult named Los Iluminados. What follows becomes a struggle for survival that even challenges Leon as survivor of Raccoon City. The story is really good B-movie material and kept me going. It changes a bit of the lore as it is the evil Umbrella Corporation is not the villain as it was disbanded years ago. There are also complete new enemies and here they succeed as some of them are really scary like the idea of the las plagas or especially the regenerators and iron maidens. Remark: If you find the idea of the las plagas to fantastic to be real look up the real life species of Sacculina on Wikipedia for example. Be warned it is an unappetizing and scary experience. The boss battles were intense and enjoyable too. I still remember some of them fondly. Gameplay-wise it focused more on action and shooting than survival horror (Clarification: I still would call it a survival horror game). A clear deviation from the previous games. It does however work really well. You can aim freely with your weapon that has a laser sight. You can use this to slow enemies by shooting them in the legs or vulnerable parts (no not genitalia). The knife is now a relatable weapon if you know how to use it. Together with smarter enemy AI it is an improvement. The bad parts are some quick time events I dislike. There is one remarkable example I want to point out. A video sequence started and looked like it takes a while (villain monologue) so I dropped the controller and want to drink a bit fo refresh myself. Then came a quick time event in the video sequence and I died. Another thing I dislike are escort missions like the huge majority of gamers. This is no spoiler as the setup “Missing daughter you have to save” tells you this is an unavoidable trope. I freely admit that they did everything to make it less of a burden. What stays the same is the inventory management. You still have to make decisions what to take with you and what to leave behind. Your inventory is now in the form of an attache / brief case. You also find collectible items to sell at a vendor which stalks you trough the game (This means available at certain spots in the area not always behind you. He has also some useful things to buy).Beware some items can be combined to get a more valuable item to sell. Herbs return and are the same as in the other games. There is a new herb when consumed increases your max health for the rest of the game (Yellow colored if I remember correctly). I think I should give you a fair warning as the game is pretty gory but not the gore for gore sake way. Many of us remember the death sequence especially the guy with a motorized wood cutting tool. The presentation is excellent for its time. The areas are huge, the graphics were amazing and the soundtrack enhances the atmosphere. Depending on the version the synchronization or speakers are sometimes weaker. Overall this was an immersive and intense game. It changes the formula but is still survival horror enough. Be warned Resident Evil 5 and 6 change more to be shooters or action games. This game however becomes an easy recommendation and just slightly misses the 10/10 mark. Expand

I am usually not a big fun of FPS games, but I have to say, I love this game. This game reminds me of elegant old days, while gameplay is what matters.

+ The game is hard and challenging in a good way, you know you could do better next time, or check your suitcase come up with new strategy, or check the map to loot some treasures for cash, it forces you to explore the map, yet it is no way boring, I don't collect for trophy, I collect because I want to.

+ I love characters in this game, even Ashley. I think she is more realistic than Ellie.

+ The text in the game is very good, they offer you both information and some rest. I love it, first time I read every single text in a game.

    - The control can be annoying sometimes, you can't move while aiming, that is fine, but you can't move while ready a knife, that is not cool, and the fact that you can't stun an enemy with your knife is also annoying while you get stun by every single hit from an enemy. You can't run while changing direction, what you actually do is stop, turn your face, then run again, it is annoying.

    - QTE in this game is harsh as hell, actually is not Quick Time, it is super human reflex, it is really hard to perform a QTE unless you know you should perform a QTE, and the QTE button you have to push seems to be random. They even add QTE in cutscene, do you know how many times I put down the controller just realized there was a QTE so I picked up the controller yet didn't have the time to perform the QTE?

    - Some enemies have way too many health, can be annoying if you don't upgrade your weapon correctly.

    - Last boss doesn't have many phases, which is a let down, I was really hoping something more epic.

Overall, one of the best games I've ever played, give it some time to get used to the control you will love it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Years after the destruction of Raccoon City, wiping out any living creature and the virus with it and Umbrella finally finished,Leon S Kennedy, now a goverment agent is assigned to find the missing daughter of the president of the United States, who has been aducted by an unknown occult, her whereabouts was unknown until one day it was mention she was in a rural part of Spain, thats where the game begins.

You're in a village, trying to find someone to ask for Ashleys whereabouts, where a man violently tries to kill you with his axes...there you have no choice but to eliminate him...soon you realise the whole village is against you. What happened there? What happen to the villagers? Why they act that way? Only for you to find out.

This is the first game where the camera is behind you back, the graphics looks really awesome in this game, better than Resident Evil Code Veronica, you should see the cutscenes how lively the characters are,Leon is more tougher and good looking,Ashley looks ok,secondary characters look awesome too. The location is in the more rural part of Spain, the village, the church,a castle,a mine,an island,a laboratory etc all of them look terrific. The fire looks really real so real that if you get close to it you can get hurt, you can rum in the water too and use a speedboat as transportation,be careful, not all water area is safe.

The controls plays as always but more intuitive, meaning that they don't move as if they are tanks, they move more like humans, you can run, climb, shoot, kick and hit enemies etc. The variety of weapons is enormous, most of them have this lasersights which can be more easy to aim at enemies which mostly you want to eliminate them shooting them in the head. The boss fights are hard sometimes mostly cause they really hard but sometimes you'll have to use the enviroment to your advantage to gain success in your battles.

Whats new here are the quick time event which during scenes you will have to stay alert cause you will never know when danger is near, when you do know you will have to press the buttons really fast otherwise its game over for you especially the Leon vs Krauser knife fight, believe me,i had to try a few times to get it all right.

In this game its the first time where you can buy and sell stuff thanks to the merchant you find throughout the game, when you find him you can buy new weapons,a bulletproof vest, upgrade weapons for them to be stronger and you can sell precious items you find,in some of them you have to do a little mixing to other items so that they can have more value.

Lets talk about the moment you find Ashley, well Ashley is a damsel in distress where you have to protect her from enemies, you can give her simple instructions like wait so you can investigate the area, once you see that its safe tell her to follow you and she will, also you can tell her to hide if that option is avaliable. You will have to keep her close to you cause enemies can take her and if the enemy that takes her to a door its game over...it will be game over if she suffers damages. Also a new item is the yellow herb,it cannot be use by its own but if its mixed with a green herb or a green and red together, your health will grow each and each time you use a mixed herb with the yellow one cause both Leon and Ashley starts with short health. Those herbs can be use for Ashley as well.

Once you complete the game,a mercenarie mode is avaliable where you fight against a horde of enemies, you can pick Leon,Ada,Krauser,Hunk and Wesker.

For the ps2 which is the version im reviewing,a new scenario is avaliable called Separate Ways where you play as Ada Wong, you will play in her perspective, her objection is to find a sample for evidence,i figure you guys know shes playing in both sides here. You play exactly like in Leons scenario but Adas is much shorter and more easier than Leons.

Well i guess its safe to say that this is one of the best Resident Evil game yet but its not my fav,its has better gameplay and better graphics than all of the previous Resident Evil but i enjoyed the story of Resident Evil 2 & 3, But this is a long Resident Evil game and its story is also very cool and easy to understand. If your a fan of Resident Evil game or even no fan, you'll definately will have alot of fun with this one, sure the zombies are gone and the scare factor is not as high as the previous ones but still its not going to stop you for having a blast with this one...and who knows? Maybe its a good thing. Good work Capcom, hats off to you :D

The big draw was the exclusive content (two Ada Wong campaigns, new costumes, extra weapons) which made it a rebuy for those who owned the original. -Resident Evil 4 was special game on its decade because it added an "over the shoulder" third person camera . This mechanic differences this game from the previous ones, The most part of the game is action, there are more enemies and you need this shooter mechanic. In my opinion what makes this game worse is that there aren't so many puzzles as in other resident evil games. This gameplay in our time is not a great thing , but at that time it was really innovative. I still loving it's gameplay even being a bad decision in the saga.
The aim with the red dot for me it's a cool mechanic that is different from other third person shooters. There are parts where there are puzzles and that it's nice to keep some of the essence of the saga. This game also includes a very common nowadays mechanic that consists in upgrade and customize your weapons thanks to the money (ptas) you gather from enemies.

-The story of this game is so simple, the plot locates us after the incident of Racoon city, umbrella has "vanished" and suddenly the president's daughter disappeared. Leon S. Kennedy (the same police officer from RE2) he's an agent from the government that has the objective of rescue her.

-All the events take place in Spain, where there is an infected cult called "Los Iluminados" alongside with "los ganados", the habitants of the village. Ashley Graham, the president's daughter is captured by the cult, and Leon must save her. Story could have been better, Spain is not well represented, is very different to the real country. Its habitants look like mexicans cause of their voice, and there are not any recognizable place from the real spain.

-The characters are good, in general, most of them have their own personality and are interesting.Leon is a really funny character that is always joking, and also brave. RE2 fans love this character because of his haircut and aspect, is a very memorable character. Ada Wong also have a place in the story, and same as leon , character from RE2. She is a suspicious woman who is spying Leon to get information about the virus of "Las plagas". She is working for what remains of Umbrella Corporation. Lord saddler and Ramon Salazar are the two main villains on the game which are really nice. There is another new character called Luis Sera who is a really cool character and is easy to take it love.

-to be a game of 2005 it has great graphics and also great sound effects, you can feel the atmosphere every moment in the game. The sound effects are really well designed, reloading the gun, shooting, impacts and more.(these are some examples of good sound effects of the game)

-In general this game is great and entertaining, with some issues, but still great. This is a unforgettable adventure,no doubt.

Although the game changes the classic RE formula, it's forgiven for how well the game was made, from the atmosphere, to the gameplay, to the enemies... it might be lacking in the horror department, but that doesn't stop it from being a classic.

I seriously question why it took me this long to finally finish playing Resident Evil 4. I have certainly known about the game pretty much since its initial run and I have attempted to play it multiple times, but for whatever reason I just now decided to hunker down and finish it. Better late than never, and I'm glad I did. It can be easy to go into a game like this thinking, "Oh, it can't be THAT good", because like, say, Ocarina of Time, everybody and their distant uncle has sung this game's praises over the moon for over 15 years, but no. RE4 really is an amazing achievement in modern gaming, and one whose influence is still clearly felt to this very day.

Rookie cop turned government agent Leon S. Kennedy has been tasked with traveling to a remote European village in search of the President's missing daughter Ashley Graham. Immediately upon arrival, however, he is greeted by a hoard of blood-thirsty villagers, infected by a parasite known as Las Plagas. Now, in addition to rescuing Ashley, he'll need to put a stop to this virus and the people responsible for releasing it. If you thought that Resident Evil stories were campy and over-the-top before, RE4 full-out embraces its cheese. It is an incredibly dumb plot with lots of illogical, death-defying moments and cartoonish villains that, really, you can't help but enjoy. Even as schlock, there was a lot of love that went into making this work as evident by the solid, campy voice acting. The creators are fully aware of this, and thus you can appreciate this game for what it is. If you were ever worried about walking into this game without any prior RE experience, continuity isn't too big of an issue here and instead works well as a stand-alone horror action game.

Speaking of action, this was one of the biggest changes made to RE's formula. The series had been leaning into this direction as early as RE2, but RE4 is the game that went full ham on the concept. While not the first game to utilize an over-the-shoulder 3rd Person perspective, this was the game that made it the standard. Structurally, it still is classic RE at its core. You still have tank controls, you explore the environment for items and ammo, solve the occasional puzzle and defeat a boss every so often. However, whereas you were encouraged to avoid enemies when necessary (and you are still encouraged to conserve ammo), RE4 wants you to obliterate everything and everyone. Most enemies you defeat drop valuable loot, like gold coins to purchase new weapons from the local merchant, ammo and other item pick-ups, and RE4's combat is immensely satisfying because of it. That, and it's always fun to stun your enemies, run up to them and give them a good old roundhouse kick to the face, and then follow up with slashes from your knife. You'll be squaring off against a good variety of enemies, from simple farmers, to machine gun-toting infected soldiers to whatever parasitic monstrosity you come across. While the bosses have a lot of spectacle, most are very simple to take down (and that's without using a rocket launcher on them). You'll be offered a wide variety of potent weapons that you can upgrade and just go to town with, and half of the fun was just seeing what new weapons will be available for you to try out. Once you are done with the main campaign there is still plenty more to do, like a couple of extra campaign modes and the Mercenaries mini-game. It would be an outright lie to say RE4 lacks value and content.

While RE4 was certainly the most linear game in the series up to this point, exploration is still a key component. You'll be scavenging for not only ammo and healing items, but also for rare treasures to sell. Plus, it's just worth exploring just for the game's atmosphere. While not as handsome as the GameCube version, the PS2 version visually is no slouch. Puzzle solving, on the other hand, takes a massive backseat in favor of its action. If there are any real criticisms I have against this game, it would be the lax use of puzzles and the rather dated QTEs, but these are really minor marks against the game.

The only other thing I can say about this game is that it really is as great as everyone says, and its no wonder this has been ported to darn near everything you can think of. This is an easy recommendation to anybody wanting to get into the series, and just for horror buffs and action junkies in general.

I dare you to encounter the chainsaw guy in close quarters with no upgrades to the basic handgun. The immersion is amazing. It has some of the best elements of gaming dating back to atari. If this game had come sooner in the GameCube lifespan, its no doubt it would be a stronger console contender. You can have the best game on the market and the console for Sony and Microsoft's price point. This is the best time to be a gamer with multiple consoles. . RE4 has all of the polish of Kojima's METAL GEAR and the gameplay depth of Microsofts's HALO. If only there was the sense of free roaming akin to Rockstar's GTA series. My only qualms are linear gameplay and only semi interactive environments. But those are minor, eight out of ten easy for the PS2 version, I did like the extra missions even if the story still takes a backseat to the action. Now I am sure what GC's power is based upon, simple ideas that originated at the start of the generation, and PS2 already has left that mark a long time ago... Still, this is the best Resident Evil out there but it certainly isn't the 9 or 10 rating suited, the graphics of 'resident evil : dead aim' were far more sharper and superior to it, what critics said was a bias that the graphics on the GC were more greater than PS2's, for this game is a PORT, and not a REMAKE, that the system could not have had picked up the detail. Since there are a few modes you can unlock after finishing the main story, you can spend hours and hours until game completion. (I bet if the game was released nowadays you would have to pay to unlock the extra modes as DLC) Not to mention replayability is excellent - no wonder why people are still playing it 10 years ago after its release!

Now let's be honest. I love RE4 gameplay wise, but story wise it's horrible.
    1. STORY IS **** It took place in Spain, has nothing to do with Umbrella and zombies.
    2. This isn't even horror. It's just a shooting game. You never run out of ammo and there are no scares either.

This game should be released as a one-off side story, never as Resident Evil 4. I absolutely loved the setting of the demo - it has that eerie and claustrophobic atmosphere of previous RE games and pretty interesting settings (took place in a locked down castle, hallucinations from infection etc). RE4 really wasted the opportunity to be a proper RE sequel, which is a huge shame.

This game is also where the series went downhill. Because it is so successful, Capcom tried to remake this action-without-horror-TPS spinoff twice (as sequels again, no less) and failed miserably. How surprising.

It has a very original combat system with shooting and it makes a more challenging game, it's not like some shooters on the PS2 where it auto-locks and all you have to do is press the shoot button. Don't get me wrong, it's not a challenge because its broken. Its a challenge because when a villager is charging you, sometimes you cant line up the shot and have to pull your knife and brawl for your life. I also really like the inventory system, if you are OCD and want to make everything just right, you can spend almost hours combining, crafting, and sorting your inventory. The controls are simple and are easy to understand. It takes under a minute in the first part of the game to get everything down. The game-play mechanics will have you saving every last bullet so you don't run out (or maybe i'm just really bad at saving my ammo). I also liked, at the beginning, the scarcity of ammo for everything but your pistol, then making you fight hordes of villagers with a grenade, 6 shotgun shells, and 20 or so bullets in your pistol. Verdict: A must own for video game collectors, or anyone who owns a PS2. Expand

Its true that the graphics, the effects, the setting and the length are great altogether. But the enemy AI its unacceptably mindless. You will find yourself in situations where you are in front of an enemy and it doesnt see you, even if you shoot other enemies close to it, or if he sees you, for some reason cannot attack you. Or enemies that walk into ground traps and nothing happen, but at the same time are placed so they must walk into laser traps and explode. Or enemies that spawn just behind you, like they came from nowhere because theres no door. Or the shocking case of a scene where an enemy shows with a rocketlauncher and you just wait so then he shoots to the wall and kills himself. Theres too obvious loopholes for certain enemies that make the game easier than it should be, and to be honest the default difficulty is already easy as you never feel like you have to manage your ammo carefully. One curious fact is that the radius of dinamite, grenade (etc) is bigger for enemies than for you. As others have pointed out, the game is based on limited controls, i suppose this is done on purpose, but throwing a grenade accurately can be very difficult or impossible, and simple things like a button to dodge the arrows of the enemies that carry crossbows for example, or more important, a way to fast change weapons with an animation (rather than pausing the game each time) are missing. The flaws of the game doesnt end there though. The game is very linear, in the sense that theres no secrets or secret areas to discover, and the full map is given to you before having explored it as well as the weapons you can get. The save points sometimes are too overspread as well, it feels like theres one around every corner, even when the area in-between wasnt challenging or lengthy at all. About the story, characters and plot, they are of the most stupid, disastrous, ridiculous and non-sensical you will ever see in a game, so its better just to overlook it. So while this is no doubt one of the best games of the ps2 catalogue, calling it the best would be an insult to other games that are much more deep and perfect and whose mechanics are much better thought out. The story is cheesy but doesn't feel cheesier than a good action movie, and the graphics at the time were stylish and really helped create a blend of horror and action. The sections are rememberable and you can tell this game was perfectly crafted. Unfortunately, this port is really just not the most amazing version of the game with long loads, poorer graphics than the Gamecube version, and slowdown on the framerates but of course, I didn't notice this stuff until I actually grew up. If you are looking to play this game and get that retro feel I would recommend the Gamecube version, but this is still an amazing game. The PS2 version though is definitely the worst version with again, horrendous graphics and visual quality, really long loads for simply the inventory, and choppy framerates that hinder the gameplay quite a bit on this version. I don't like PS2 games but this one I liked. Which is not to say it's perfect. It starts off as survival horror and then about half way through, it turns into Quake or Aliens or some sci-fi movie. So I liked the first half, not so much the second half. Plus the inability to go back to previous chapters is a huge let down. This ought to be doable since it's all one I don't like PS2 games but this one I liked. Which is not to say it's perfect. Nonetheless, it's addictive because the save points are spaced really close to each other. You keep on going for one more save point. Game took me about 26 hours to complete. One good thing is that you can replay the game with all of your advanced-level weapons. Too bad the game doesn't provide enough incentives to play a second round. The only gameplay element that was uncharacteristically poor was Krauser, where you had a three minute time limit and his pattern was impossible to figure out. Graphics are stunning for a PS2 game. Gameplay is 100000x less frustrating than God of War or MGS2. If they ended the game after you saved the girl, I would have given this ten out of ten. They just dragged the story out way too long. The game managed to create an interesting plot line, but after the castle, the storyline delves into a very atypical ending and the loose ends of the story are unnerving. I will also state that the game was a wonder to play through; rather easy, interesting and fun. However, my biggest beefs with RE4 are the way the game managed to not entice me to continue; I found myself thinking, "wow, this is very classic RE" and not in a good way. I personally prefer the claustrophobic interiors of RE2. And worst of all, I wonder how this is a resident evil game, and i find it oddly reminiscent to SH: The Room to the SH series. However, this game does contain substantial gameplay, but the story still remains rather dull to me. Also, I found myself loving Assignment Ada and Separate Ways, more than I did the regular game. 7/10. definitely, not my top 10 of all games. Expand

The game.. well, has a few jump scares and sometimes has a feeling of claustrophobia, but calling it a survival horror still feels wrong. More like a horrific action game. Anyways, the monster design is rather fun, boss fights are pretty varried, and your little companion doesn't get in the way as much as you'd expect, since you can basically just toss her in a bin and leave her there, and more than a few times she just randomly gets seperated from you for extended periods of the game.

So, yeah. The game can be pretty fun. I can't see the hype behind it being the greatest game ever, but gameplay wise it was certainly alot better than previous resident evils. However, the absolute abandonment of atmosphere in favor of it leaves a sour taste in my mouth. And the writing has never been very good in any resident evil, but 4 is what heralded the B grade hollywood action movie shenanigans. At least leon is painfully unfunning in every game he tries.

Anyways, the game is fun enough, but I'm a bit sour over what it brought upon. I wish its dialogue just wasnt so.. ugh.

Could've been great, but the lack of multiplayer and co-op mode makes RE4 a single-player experience only hermits can enjoy. It's a shame because there was plenty of potential. Now, RE4 is nothing but a pseudo-FPS (1 player to boot) with an unoriginal plotline.

The lack of ammo you find forces you to aim at vital spots, but that's a little hard when possessed spanish zombies and monsters are swarming right at you. At first, you'll want to aim for the head and it saves you ammo, but later in the game when you shoot enemies in the head, a parasite pops out which you then have to spend even more ammo blasting it. With that in mind, you'll want to avoid headshots. Most people have nothing but good words for the "behind the shoulder" view, but I thought it was clunky and very hard to move Leon. You'll be constantly moving around trying to find where you are, since the camera moves when you move. Since you can't move when aiming with a gun or knife, you'll be running all over the place out of harm's way only to aim again and then run away again. Finally, the parts of the game where you escort Ashley are very tedious, as she can't defend herself and you are forced to rescue her when (and that's a definite WHEN) she gets carried away by an enemy. On a good note, the graphics are pretty good and the script and dialogue are deliciously cheesy and fun. The campaign is fairly long, and the extra bonus missions will keep you playing for a while (if you haven't already given up from the difficulty like I have). Expand

It's the same game as you saw on the 'Cube, with more extra's. but the graphics and sound detail sabotage the game in alot of ways. Attention to detail is RE4's selling points, so why sabotage it with low polygon counts, decreased texture detail, and PRE-RENDERED cutscenes? It's overall a rent, but a buy if you have no other way to play it.

And they even add a shop? What the hell, is this resident evil or Counter strike? The game kinda starts to get boring after the first two massacres. Also, you have "over the shoulder" perspective but the character moves like in old resident evils, it's SOOOO unintuitive.

To finish, something really annoying was he fact that the action takes place in Spain and the voice actors are clearly speaking mexican dialect, it makes me feel the game is kind of a joke, they didn't even research anything about the place the game was taking place in? I only give it a 6 because graphically it's kinda nice even if it's old and because the storyline was good despite the mexican thing kinda taking away the immersion.
