Johnny Depp adds a good deal of credibility to his role in the game (and the movies, for that matter), but as far as late-generation PS2 titles go, this one should walk the plank.
-
A pretty standard hack-and-slash action game that doesn't deliver on much of the stumblingly bombastic charm of its title character.
-
For a game that was inspired by a movie that was inspired by a theme park ride that was originally inspired by a book, The Legend of Jack Sparrow is less than inspired.
-
It is incredibly shallow and repetitive, offering up a fair amount of wasted potential and providing the gamer with little or nothing to really go on, but manages to still be fun.
-
One of the nicest things about the game is the fact that players will be able to play co-op with another individual.
-
Game InformerThe only thing this game does right is not inflict an ancient curse on the player. [Aug 2006, p.85]
-
Games Master UKWe love Jack Sparrow, but we're disappointed he's not in a better game. [Sept 2006, p.69]
-
Electronic Gaming MonthlyIt may be stupid fun - and it certainly gets monotonous - but at least it is fun. Apologetic kids should be thrilled. [Aug 2006, p.89]
-
Has all the right parts, but none of them gel together well. The swordplay never truly excites, while the puzzles and enemies never rise above mediocrity.
-
The combat needed to be tons better to be really enjoyable.
-
The Legend of Jack Sparrow was very disappointing as a game and hurt the franchise’s appeal as a consequence.
-
Disney may have a massive hit in the theaters but they have one heck of a dud for the PS2. This almost recalls the fabled "ET" in terms of rushing something, ANYTHING, out the door to cash-in on a popular movie only with better voice work.
-
Official Playstation 2 Magazine UKA lightweight grog and cutlass battler that only just scrapes average thanks to Depp's turn as Sparrow. "Prince of Persia" does the swashbuckling action so much better. [Sept 2006, p.94]
-
Official U.S. Playstation MagazineIt's a very rudimentary action game with some fairly sloppy gameplay mechanics and AI that's so bad it might as well have been programmed by some sort of weasel-like creature. [Sept 2006, p.81]
-
Legend has some charm, thanks mostly to Depp, but gets repetitious very quickly.
-
All that saves Pirates on PS2 from completely walking the plank is Johnny Depp’s boisterous performance, the rare drop in co-op gameplay, and the fact that it’s always fun to be a pirate for a while. But as far as everything else goes...you’ve been warned.
-
Bogged down by a host of flaws, but in the end, it's still a passably entertaining sword-brawler. Its relatively short run-time, clever script and Johnny Depp voice-over are enough to justify a rental for fans of the film.
-
Plays like hundreds of other action fighting games, and looks worse than half of them.
-
Jack's narrative is amusing, and pirates are just deliciously cult and cool. But the game walks the plank when you realize that it's a bland, buccaneer version of God of War.
-
PSM MagazineIt's still passably entertaining for Pirates fans, but Jack Sparrow's legend deserves a better game. [Sep 2006, p.86]
