Walks a fine line between serious sim and classic Blitz action and maintains a perfect balance from start to finish.
-
Some of the best arcade football I have player in a while.
-
Consider this, you can play the game almost anyway you wish, with strict rules or with the attitude. This is a game that is highly entertaining to play and watch.
-
NFL Blitz Pros blend of a more realistic style of gameplay and hard hitting action definitely improves the single player experience without overly sacrificing the multiplayer gameplay.
-
A solid game, but the sluggish gameplay holds it back considerably.
-
GMR MagazineMidway has successfully overhauled their classic series, but it has kept the ultraviolence that made it so popular. [Oct 2003, p.68]
-
The play dynamic is still fierce, there are tons of extra modes and fantasy teams to unlock, and the PS2 supports online play. It's still a great two-player game, and the slightly better single player experience should make most fans of the series happy.
-
Play MagazineThey've gone the realism route, and the end result is a mixed bag. [Oct 2003, p.83]
-
A slightly schizophrenic brew. The true-to-the-sport side won't please the football gamers used to deeper titles from EA or Sega, and those who just like the idea of flagrant late hits might be disappointed that some of the lunacy seems to have been toned down.
-
Game InformerMore refinement is needed on the game in general, and Blitz Pro can be limiting. However, this is exactly the kind of jump I've been waiting for Midway to make for years. [Sept 2003, p.107]
-
It's ok for a secondary Football game if you have friends over, or want to go online occasionally. But as a single player game, or something you play leagues with on the PS2, I think this is the year Blitz doesn't quite fit in. And I love Midway, so this is a very difficult thing to say.
-
PSM MagazineIf you enjoy the Blitz style of play and want a more standardized approach to the game you've been messing around with for years, then this is your title. [Oct 2003, p.33]
-
A game that just doesn't fit in. Out of the box it's not as fun as its predecessors, and nowhere near as deep or engaging as Madden or ESPN.
-
The inclusion of half-hearted simulation elements and toned down arcade gameplay result in Blitz Pro turning into a watered down shadow of its former self. Hopefully next years version will restore some glory to this now tarnished franchise.
-
Electronic Gaming MonthlyStill a user-friendly pigskin experience with lightning-fast over-the-top gameplay. Yet I'm forced to throw a penalty flag at the lack of big passing plays I've come to love from this franchise. [Nov 2003, p.172]
-
Has good qualities, but, ultimately, it tries much too hard to be something it isn't.
-
Fusing a lightning-quick, over the top football engine with a realistic foundation in professional rules simply doesnt work. Its like putting Wayne Chrebet in a West Coast offense both are great in and of themselves, but adding the two together leads to mediocrity.
-
It was like playing a toned down version of last years Blitz game with 11 players and 10 yards for a first down. Same playbooks, same style of play, same moves and a turbo button.
-
Official U.S. Playstation MagazineIt's really hard to complete a pass now - I actually found myself achieving more solid success with the running game. That's not supposed to happen in Blitz! [Nov 2003, p.138]
-
By diluting the elements that set NFL Blitz apart from other football games, Midway has left the door open for its game to be compared to "Madden NFL 2004" and "ESPN NFL Football." Unfortunately, there is no comparison.
