From the kind of car you may have in your garage in real life, to Rally monsters of the 90's, and even LMPs, this game has a selection like no other of the era, and even a greater selection than most racing games today. The licenses help ease you into the games physics, giving scenarios to help you learn the feel of driving in GT4. But also have the silver and gold times for those hungrier for perfection. Then there is the simply unmatched number and types of events. Races reminiscent of a get together on a Sunday, to 24 hour endurance events, to everything in between stand before you. The 100% speedrun for this game is 260+ hours. That should give you an idea of the sheer amount of content. And even then, you wouldn't have used every car. So you can go start again, completing the game without a single car having been reused even once. No racing game, whether a part of the Gran Turismo, Forza, Need for Speed, or any other series, can possibly match the accomplishments of this game from 2004. 100/10, a must play for all. Expand

One of the best racing games of all times. The nostalgia might be strong with this one, but to this day it still holds up. Just can't praise it enough. An official remaster by Polyphony would be nice, however I can understand why adding content to the starving Gran Turismo 7 is a priority considering that GT4 graphics are still decent.

This game is challenging but fun and when you are stuck there is always a way to get through it.
This is the racing game and from a 2005 game it is beautiful. The cars still look good, the tracks are amazing and unique and super fun. The game isn't ball busting punishing but gives a decent challenge.
This game was the reason I love racing games, and no game in the series competes with it.
And what racing game has 700 different cars you can drive ranging from one of the first motorized vehicles ever from 1886 to a 2022 Nike Concept car from 2005.
This was also the first Gran Turismo game to have most to all of its tracks be based of real race circuits. And was the first to have the full Le Mans race circuit and also has the legendary NĂĽrburgring as a drivable track.
This game is amazing, Just watch the Iconic opening with Van Halen's Panama. This song and intro is so iconic it has been stuck in my head for over 13 years. And I will never forget the intro or the song because of this game.

Title: Gran Turismo 4 PS2 Version Review: A Masterpiece of Racing Realism

    10 out of 10

Gran Turismo 4 is a racing game for the PlayStation 2 that completely redefines the genre by providing an unmatched level of driving realism and content richness. My interest in the game was immediately piqued by its meticulous attention to detail, large car collection, and engaging gameplay. In terms of racing video games, Gran Turismo 4 is unquestionably a masterpiece.

Gran Turismo 4's beautiful graphics are one of its best features. Despite the technological restrictions of the PlayStation 2, the game nonetheless manages to provide stunning images. Every aspect of the autos has been painstakingly modelled and faithfully reproduced. Few other games at the time could compare to the stunningly realistic rendering of the tracks in terms of realism. Racing in this virtual world is a genuinely immersive experience, and the visual fidelity further enhances that.

Gran Turismo 4's driving mechanics are superb, finding the ideal balance between usability and realism. Because of these differences in handling, each automobile has an own feel. The handling is immensely enjoyable, whether you're drifting around turns or keeping precise control at high speeds. Each race feels like an actual motorsport experience thanks to the developers' extraordinary efforts to generate realism.

The vast car collection in Gran Turismo 4 is one of its best features. There is a car for every racing lover among the more than 700 available from different manufacturers. The range is wide-ranging and includes anything from classic vintage cars to contemporary supercars. Each vehicle is faithfully replicated, both in terms of design and functionality, demonstrating the incredible attention to detail. Gran Turismo 4's car collecting and customization joys are unmatched and will keep you entertained for countless hours.

Gran Turismo 4's career mode features a rich and interesting advancement system. Starting with a low budget, you progress through various racing competitions, collecting credits to buy new cars and upgrade your current ones. The different races and difficulties make the gaming interesting and new. The sense of achievement you get as you advance and open up new events makes every triumph feel significant.

Gran Turismo 4 also has a remarkable attention to detail. The game has realistic weather effects, day-night cycles, and damage modelling, which adds to the realism. The soundtrack is likewise well-chosen, with a variety of officially-permitted songs that enhance the racing experience.

In conclusion, Gran Turismo 4 for the PlayStation 2 is a true gem in the racing genre. Its stunning graphics, impeccable driving physics, vast car collection, and deep career mode make it an unforgettable gaming experience. Even years after its release, it remains a benchmark for racing games. If you're a fan of racing or simply appreciate finely crafted games, Gran Turismo 4 is an absolute must-play. With its unmatched realism and sheer enjoyment, it deserves a perfect score of 10/10 on Metacritic.

Graphics, realistic driving, fast cars, it's brilliant, but it would be better if it didn't go on for so long as it gets boring after a while (a very long while) that shows how long this game goes on for. The size of the game, as always, is definately enough to keep you playing for a good long time and the graphics are top-notch. But for a game that is so obcessed with being the ultimate driving simulator, you'd think they would've included realistic crashes, rather than bouncing off cars/barriers like a souped-up bumper car. That said, it's still a cracking game.

The real driving simulator has become even realer than before. The grafic is quite the same I think but it´s way moor fun to play this than GT3. There are some things I miss but this is enough for me to survive until Granturismo 5 hits PS3. It's a gr8 game, but not as "grantastic"as GT2 was.

In fact, there are only handfull of games that support 1080i, and GT4 is only one for PS2. I cannot believe that developers pulled 1080i with 60fps on PS2! I don't think Forza will be able to do that. (they downed to 30 fps already.) It's beutiful to look at. Gameplay is still solid racer. B-spec mode is great when you get tired for races. I let cpu do the race while I go have a cig or catch Sportscenter. When I come back, I get money. Overall sound seems better than gt3. Music seems to be more suiting for racing than Gt3. So many people complain about the car damage. Have people played NFS: High Stakes? In simulation, it's pain in the butt to fix your car after every race. AI racers are good racers with precision, but rather dumb when it comes to competiting. Only one mode that I miss is online mode. I'm not really into online experience with consoles, but I was hoping gt4's sell-your-car mode can help. However, it doesn't interfere with car collecting frezy gt4 has to offer. If you love cars, get it. I was getting chills when I saw Delorean in the DMC shop! Too bad it doesn't have as much as european cars and american cars as I hoped for, but there is a car for almost everyone's taste. Muscles, Exotics, Rice rockets, even cars like Ford T, and Mercedez' first car. It's a great game, but not a truest simulation. Physics is still the best I've seen. It even improved over Gt3. Cars feel heavy like they should be and some cars like NSX understeers and some oversteers. Truest simulations are way too difficult to enjoy through TV screen and GT4 is a fun sim to let you enjoy cars. Stop complainin and enjoy! Expand

Gran Turismo 4 is the recipe Polyphony Digital and Sony should stick to, no deviation just refinement. I never completed this game which is not a criticism, just a testament to how large the game is. The multiplayer was also great with the car selection being half the fun going through 80 manufacturers to pick the best car.

The only problem I had with this game when it came out was its lack of damage, which if included would've made the game a perfect console racer in its day, instead of the only the best. It is still enjoyable to return to approaching a decade after its release which for a car game is testament to the vastness that is Gran Turismo 4.

Now for a look at GT4. Lot of content, some reward cars can be awkward and the manager mode an entire sub genre I think started here (I may be wrong but can't recall other niche games or notable doing this till GT4).

First is the menus. The orange and blacks of menus, HUD and more are gone in favour of a more white modern look. I enjoy the other design but the quality of it (resolution I mean) it still looks appealing as if it came out in this generation for a map in GT Mode to options/arcade mode (also less boxes and blandness like modern games too).

Music remixes are still here & great. While licensed music has more variety of genres and artists.

The driving model is more higher level skill. The variety of FF, FR, MR, 4WD & RR are still different enough & quirks that cars are known for are present. Many tracks do look like their real life counterparts now. While some new ones have been added alongside some less appealing too many cars for advertising big number counts when its too many versions of a Madza MX5, Honda Civic or others. Too many trims included.

No car classes or Gear Score/PP/PI system, no level system (didn't till GT5 & further focus, even stricter in GT7. Only Corvette/Alfa Romeo Racing Italiano/Racing Lagoon as RPG focused for the time.

Licenses tests offer 80 tests (16 per 5), 3 1 lap trials each (15 total), then 8-10 per of GT1-3. There is variety but some are filler (repeats). GT4P save import offers bronze tests & 100K.

Coffee Breaks are fun little side challenges. No 1L Fuel left of GT6 yet but many cone focused (cone maze/spiral) or marked Gymkhana course layouts.

Driving Missions are introduced. Many of these are more so overtake missions such as slipstreaming, 1 Lap Magic aka time limit back of the pack and overtake all opponents (Sprint in FM6&7), 3 lap overtaking with opponents scattered around the track & overtaking just 1 or 2 opponents of a similar car range. 1 lap magic times can get long to wait for so be careful about how to beat them. Some around 30 seconds others 100.

You did have R Racing (story/challenges)/MotoGP time trial, checkpoints, overtaking challenges to get concept art and bikes, or MotoGP3 20 custom tracks never seen again or TOCA story mode/motorsport variety but GT4 offers it's style of content offerings.

Like those listed above to the GT2 approach of:
-one make events (no randomiser this time so no filtering Super Speedway anymore XD),
-Endurance from 1 to 24hrs (3 24hr events) (no dynamic day/night) or 100 lap counts,
-Drag Race (1 Las Vegas Strip so not as many as Sega GT on Dreamcast or FM3),
-photo scapes to position cars in photo mode,
-speed tests or races (5 credits and a custom race based on the car you selected),
-3 difficulties and many rally events
-B spec mode useful for tracks you don't like or endurance events which does cut out after going to the pits so you have to reset it again. You can x3 speed which isn't present in GT5&6 B spec sadly but GT6's player control option with R1 and accel/brake does put it up a bit then just paces.

The event variety is good. You have a good mix of drivetrain, supercars/Horse power requirement, car classes (hatch, muscle, trucks and more) old era or modern era, one makes, rally and more are available.

Tuned cars offer different complete/better parts than makers.

With some rewards as concept/historical, some not all can be used in main events only in arcade mode/speed tests. But it varies, try out some concepts to find out (message will tell you if you can't use them). So be careful winning concept cars for some events you worked hard to beat. Events can be repeated/sell those cars.

Car selling prices vary, concepts aren't worth selling anything (unless fan mods).

The mix of road, wet, dirt & snow for rally is great. Some tracks are tight, so get creative with ways to pass single opponents. Some GT2/3 tracks are removed (some still there like Tahiti Maze/Swiss Alps).

With some new added like Grand Canyon, Paris, Italian cities (Coast de Amalfi, Cita Di Aria), Tsukuba wet & Cathedral Rocks.

Used car dealers return, results of car types/region are fair but still awkward. Especially for non-Japanese cars you can find some for certain events, but best to go with new cars. For trucks go for new dealers. Besides day 690-700 silhouette cars.

If you complete Beginner & Professional events you receive the end movie. But Extreme Events are available as a bonus besides the rally, endurance (after 25%), US, EU & JP events.

The game can easily last 100s of hours, be played many different ways even with the fair event requirements (something many modern games like FM6's linear & side content approach could learn from. But different in structure to a PGR2 that has car class event careers but is allowing many event types/tracks still) events so many are open ended (main or side). With many ways, casual/custom challenges/B spec/roleplay.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Love the game, it was my first ever game that I played on my own PS2 console when I recieved a silver PS2 Slim. I fell in love with it and played it alot with my nephew who is 1 year younger than me. How it looks and plays is pretty good, and the progression in Gran Turismo mode is amazing, you could grind a race over and over again to get cash, or redo entire cups to recieve a prize car you could sell, etc. There are many ways for you to progress on your own without any tutorial system of the game restricting you. The closest you get to the tutorial is the License Tests and it does quite an okay job at teaching the players specific stuff to expect within that class, but some of it gets challenging and it may or may not encourage players to strive harder to keep playing and attaining licenses. There may be flaws, such as the one lap magic missions, especially the last one, and a few false braking indicators here and there, but that's easily overlooked if you're looking for a Gran Turismo game that isn't restrictive, forcibly linear and has tons of things to do. I'm going to try not to rehash everything said. First of all, the game is beautiful, the car list is much improved over GT3, etc. Now maybe it's just me, but the AI has seemed to have gotten worse. This of course is exacerbated by two key things: the increase in rolling start races, and the horrible changes to the rally mode. Let's start with the first. The Gran Turismo I'm going to try not to rehash everything said. The Gran Turismo series generally has two types players: those who mod their cars and prefer to race against their own times and be so far ahead of the CPU that you can lap them in a two-lap race. The other type is the kind that prefers to have a really challenging race, where any mistake will cost them the race as they are maybe just a little undermatched to the CPU, but their driving skills are far superior. The problem is that the rolling start races, which of course always have the CPU "Ringer" at the front are ridiculous, and they force the user to seriously mod their cars way above the class they're racing in just to be able to catch up to the ringer, which, incidentally, is even faster in this game.Take for example one of the classic car challenges, which is a series race. I was in a 650-700 hp Chevelle SS, lightened, all drivetrain upgrades, etc. On the Nurburgring they had a rolling start. By the time I reached the start line so that I could fully accelerate (they limit you to 50 initalliy), the rest of the pack was right in front of me, while the '67 Cobra with 400 hp was 7-8+ seconds in front by the first turn. I was never actually able to pass him, due in part to the other CPU cars battering into me numerous times and cutting me off in the early part of the track. This is crappy for an individual race, but then in the context of a series, it's even worse. If my car is upgraded so that I can make up 8-15 sec. diff. from the start of a rolling race, then what happens when it's a standing start. I am way way ahead of everybody. So you either have races where you'll never catch up, or where you could sit at the start while the CPU does 2 laps, and still beat them. Of course, the ringer has also been tinkered with, and unfairly so. In this same series, the first standing start I was way ahead from the beginning. In the second standing start race, the ringer shot out to a 5 sec. lead going into the first turn, and then accelerated about two times faster as before. Total crap. Also, they completely ruined the fun of the rally mode because they are too lazy to do a damage model. So, since yes, damage is important in all racing and especially rallying, they impose a 5 sec. penalty (where you're limited to 31 mph for 5 sec.) any time the front half of your car touched the wall or the CPU. Now I might be able to deal with this, except that the CPU driving is so horrible that many times you'll hit something b/c he cuts you off or any other such nonsense. Additionally, the CPU gets no penalties. I can't tell how much fun it was for me when I was drifting around a turn and the CPU (following a normal line, not drifting) plowed into my side three times in the turn as it drove through me, and as my car spun off balance, I knicked his bumper and was rewarded with a 5 sec. penalty. Sweet. My other big gripe is that contrary to what one critic said about driving medium range cars for a while, that's BS. He obviously didn't play the very first rally, with an Easy difficulty which you only need your B (first) license for, and you get a 760hp Cadillac Cien for winning. Also, b/c of the Used Car Showrooms, you can start off with a much nicer car right from the start than if you were forced to buy new. In all, loads of fun, but there are some extremely frustrating problems. Props on the inclusion of city tracks in the rally mode. Expand

I suppose if you didn't like the choices available in gt3 more generic music was probably a good idea. That said, I don't believe the audio quality is as far as it could go. Sound effects seem rather bland still it's still that 1995 sound all race games have and the music is not in digital I presume. Just take a listen to the quality of need for speed underground released much earlier and you can see the quality could be better. The options in this game are fantastic however I'm still disappointed more high speed racers aren't available (default) as I prefer going right into arcade mode and racing. I don't want to do sim mode and unlock everything and I don't even know if that's possible because I'm not willing to make this game such a time sink. I score high points to this game for minimal load times and for excellent steering wheel feel. I would like to point out though that in the ps2 library I do feel the flatout series nailed steering wheel feel even better than gt4. I can't complain about the feel however of all ps2 racing games to date that I've played these are the only two series I feel the wheel simulation was worth the purchase. Imo flatout nailed the feel of the terrain and crashes much better (more immersive). With respect to that comparison, gt4 terrain and turns still feel a bit floaty even with a force feedback wheel from where I feel they would be optimal. Graphically it's decent but considering I have an HDTV and I've changed options to 1080p in game with 16:9 aspect it really doesn't seem what one would expect. All in all I find this game really decent but as I mentioned some other race games did better jobs in different areas. That still leaves room for improvement doesn't it, and why I rate this game as 8/10. It's a massive game with lots of choice but even with all those options it didn't rank as my highest scoring race game on the system. With its high quality though it is a game that will stay on my personal library and I highly recommend it to ps2 fans or anyone still into old school. Expand

PS2's power were elevated to maximum with such realistic graphics (we're talking about 2005), impressive until nowadays, even though GT4 weren't exactly a jump comparing GT3, but just a little step. A bad game for this? Absolutely not, but GT4 looks like a GT3 2.0. About its obsolecence, Gran Turismo 4 is just like a GTA upside down. While only graphics on Rockstar's game is dated but playability doesn't, Sony's exclusive is still gorgeous visually, while physics (cars doesn't even damage when hitted for example) is elder. Predecessor game in franchise got the same issues, but I only talked about 4th title because of four years releasing difference. Even for its time, game sins in innovating, what sadly reflected in current days, obfuscating the good and nostalgic experience that player could be Expand

Sorry Eden, the game is an 8/10. It's the best in the series, but I can't lie for you to distort the ratings here...

  1. Whilst the game can offer a certain joy of ownership for a fraction of the cost, those who are not passionately interested in motoring in general won’t want to put the required effort in.

Some professional race drivers even use the incredibly life-like tracks in this game to prepare themselves for the real thing.

Blows by the competition like it was sitting on jack stands, and is the new high-water mark by which all other driving games will be judged.
