Fatal Fury: Battle Archives Volume 1

Simply put, this collection is true to the first four 2D fighting games but somehow the series just doesn’t hold up as well as it did back in the day.

Fatal Fury Special is the cornerstone of this collection. If that means anything to you, Fatal Fury Battle Archives Volume 1 might be worth a look.

While the features are non-existent and a lack of online play really bogs down the overall value it is only fifteen bucks. All four of these games are worth that based on nostalgia alone, not to mention having them all in one place for convenience.

SNK faithfully restored each game, and while the lack of extras hurts, we wholeheartedly recommend it.

It’s a nice package overall, though we can’t help but wish there had been more: additional games, development art, pics of the arcade cabinets, movies of great players or the anime, cheesecake drawings of the bouncy Mai Shiranui – anything.

Even though Fatal Fury was never as well regarded as Street Fighter II, they're still excellent games.

While Fatal Fury: Archives Volume 1 might be a cool nostalgia trip for all the old hardcore guys from the arcades, I’m afraid that it just won’t this current generation of gamers.

For those of you that have yet to experience the Fatal Fury series, give this collection a chance. It may not be the best out there, but it still gives you a taste of better things to come.

Battle Archives Vol. 1 does a graceful job in proper organization and presentation, and the ports are arcade-perfect --although they may lend themselves to a better appreciation for today's game mechanics. Unfortunately, the online multiplayer included in the Japanese release is sorely missed for the U.S. title, and that deeply lessens its value.

The AoF Anthology had its fans and the same holds true for the FFBA. Anyone who is looking to play one of the more recognizable 2D fighting franchises could do a lot worse than this.

For an SNK fighting enthusiast and genre fanatic, this game is a must-have. The characters, fighting system and old-school graphics and sound really bring a person back to the genre's roots. For casual gamers, the incredible difficulty will quickly turn them off. Gamers looking for a challenge in their fighting games need look no further.

Comprised of Fatal Fury, Fatal Fury 2, Fatal Fury Special and Fatal Fury 3; Road to the Final Victory, I imagine, will only appeal to the aforementioned Fatal Fury enthusiast.

The arranged soundtrack is the greatest gift this collection has to offer.

Fans of previous 2D-Beat’em-Up games should consider to buy the title, because very much of the good old times is contained. The title can easily be compared to competitors in the genre.

Battle Archives Vol.1 is mostly worth for what it represents, not necessarily for the - dubious - quality of its games.

This is a great release with 4 truly classic games, though I must ask why these are not on Playstation Store.

You're still better off importing the Japanese version of the "Street Fighter Anniversary Collection". "SFIII"'s on that. [Issue#172, p.89]

Fatal Fury deserves its place in the higher echelons of videogame culture and it deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as the other greats that we all know and love. It's a shame that this release has come at the end of the PS2's life, when a lot of people have gotten rid of their console for bigger and better things.
