If the developers can put as much emphasis on gameplay as they do in the franchise mode, this series might actually become something noteworthy.
-
I was pleasantly surprised by the upgrades made from last year's version...The two biggest problems that I had were with the passing game and fast breaks.

Game InformerDefinitely receives the Most Improved Series award. [Apr 2002, p.77]
-
For overall quality, it's stuck somewhere between a rock (a solid "NBA 2K2" title) and a hard place (the underachieving "NBA Live 2002").
-
Perhaps not the most complete basketball title, but definitely a contender.
-
It's a good training game, but there's too much looseness in the controls to make it a top draw.
-
Official U.S. Playstation Magazine"NBA 2K2" is still the obvious choice for basketball fans. But 2Night's stock remains on the rise. [May 2002, p.99]
-
PSM MagazineIt doesn't offer anything that would make us recommend it over a better basketball game. [May 2002, p.26]
-
It's not altogether a dismal title, but the rebounding and passing flaws bring it down pretty far. Which is a shame, because the game looks very good.
-
Suffers from a series of problems ranging from stilted animation that adversely affects its gameplay to downright poor AI.
-
The game is just not as fun to play as either its prequel or the new breed of b-ball games. This is mostly due to arcade physics forced to fit into the straight jacket of a simulation engine.
-
While the graphics have come along as expected, there just isn't any substance to make ESPN NBA 2 Night 2002 worth your time.
-
I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the heinous menu music. During Franchise mode, there's this rap song - I think it's rap - that sounds like a reject from the "Breakin'" soundtrack. It's neither hip nor hop.
