A good game, a damn good. I actually played DMC 3 first, since it is the first in the story (just like in Star Wars) and I found the game very enjoyable. At "Dante Must Die" the game turns very hard, but that is expected. I love challenging games and this one is definately one. There are some very bad dialogue, I'm pointing to Dantes dirrection, although most of the stuff coming out of his mouth is funny and just awesome. Vergil is actually my favorite DMC boss/characther in any DMC game, if not counting Dante, although Vergils campain was very rushed, since there were no cutscenes, it was still solid and fun. All the parts, from older DMC games, come together very nicely when thinking about the story. A good game, though it's definately not one of those games that you can just pick up and play at any certain moment. I miss young Dante and I really hope for DMC 5 to be made. BTW stop making charachters that try to replace Dante, like the pussy Nero. Expand

A great game that most should give a try.Vergil has few moves and no cut scenes of his own except for the beginning, making it seem that the developers just tacked it on for more value. Dante is even cockier but some of his lines just seem so tacky. Still very awesome but the plot wasn't that thick or developed. Definitely worth a buy.

Outstanding to be a reharsed edition. It fixes original's problems (in particular difficulty) and the chance to play like Vergil is better though he has limited gun move. The inclusion of palace of blood is very good. Other issues, i think, are to uncover in a very uncoherent and apparent lack of variety playing Vergil mode. 9/10 no major faults.

The thing that's best about him is that he does feel very different to Dante, it means you have to play differently, and master him separately. But here's my DMC3 review: What a brilliant game! Extremely hard, enemies coming from all over the place, slick 60 frames per second, tonnes of boss battles. The system is fair and responsive, everything is programmed correctly to make a fine experience. It has six fighting styles, so you choose one at the start of each mission. Trickster is for dodging, royalguard is for intercepting and stopping attacks, swordmaster is for showing off, gunslinger is for making guns more stylish at a distance, quicksilver is for slowing down time, and doppelganger means you can split into 2! Combine this with the fact that you have 5 swords and 5 guns - and you can take 2 of each of those into each mission, and you have... 600 combinations in total! Keep experimenting and you will never get bored. This is one of the best games on the PS2 and stands up today. Expand

The controls are solid and the game play is without a doubt amazing. the guns seem fair and all the weapons have there ups and downs. The boss fights were just as i expected which was simply amazing and stunning. i loved this game... for the 1st half. Dear god the 2nd half , you literally are running through copy pasted levels again and again and again and it seems that they had half a teem who knew what to do and half a teem sitting on the couch complaining about how long it was taking. the boss fights remains constant, but not much else does. Moving on the story is laughable. im seroious, ive never played a game with a story this bad. In one scene Dante just drives a motorcycle up a wall and jumps off and kills a bunch if guys, while in others he's just a flat out douche. while im complaining i might as well talk about my arch nemesis, the fixed camera, which you can "control" at certain points but ends up just moving 2 inches right or left and cant move up or down. One last thing is the game after replaying it twice( the 1st half and 2nd half) it says you can replay on a harder difficulty or as virgil the brother of dante, but his problem is hes supposed to be the bad guy and his story seems to play out in the exact same levels as dantes did. But with all that, i still liked dmc 3. I was a little dissapointed after the halfway point but considering what it set out to be it reached that, but it seemed to set its sight to low and could of been so much more Expand

I was originally expecting virgil to be some kind of token unlock character, either completely overpowered or completely useless, but he's actually a balanced character to play, and even more surprisingly, he's got some serious depth to his combat. The **** tier level design is forgiven this time with the addition of the bloody palace, a place where you can go and endlessly beat up hordes of demons without all that terrible platforming and crappy puzzle solving.
If anything, if you've never played this game do it at least once right now, so you've got a good benchmark for "rebellious youthful dante" before the new DmC reboot comes out.

To think DMC 3 would not only be a better game over DMC 2 but also DMC 1 makes this one of the best comebacks in a series I have ever seen. Not just even a comeback but also as a prequel done right. In a day and age of gaming where series that focus so hard on plot, characters and world building a prequel usually undermines the entries and fail to stand out as well. Devil May Cry 3 I'dTo think DMC 3 would not only be a better game over DMC 2 but also DMC 1 makes this one of the best comebacks in a series I have ever seen. Not just even a comeback but also as a prequel done right. In a day and age of gaming where series that focus so hard on plot, characters and world building a prequel usually undermines the entries and fail to stand out as well. Devil May Cry 3 I'd argue does this so well on top of delivering great gameplay and moments, that it deserves recognition and say it beats DMC 1 barely and towers over 2.

Dante's character "returns" with a goofy and B/C-script dialogue that is clearly all about killing demons and being the rebellious, bringing back what was the complete opposite of what DMC2 tried to do. While the plot, the characters or themes aren't groundbreaking and cliche fisted to high hell, it delivers the combat front and center without a second thought. Killing enemies compared to DMC1 was like added crack to a much needed rush for players as Dante can be far more responsive and adapted in fighting demons. Combos are far more satisfying to pull off, the different moves with weapons and different variety of them allows far more creativity for players to take down enemies.

The bosses and enemies are quite good. Perhaps its because of the writing being so generic and cliche, but the bosses resonated more for me then even bosses in DMC1 and was a blast to play for most of them. I like Cerberus, Geryon, Beowulf, Nevan, all fights with Vergil and Jester. Speaking of Vergil, you play as him in this version. Considering the original version was hard for many players and Capcom was getting flak for it, giving Vergil as a playable character was genius. Sure he has no real story in the game from his playthrough, but his combos with his three weapons and summoned swords are fantastic. He really feels like a cooler more reserved fighter to Dante's hot headed nature.

The unlocks, dizzying Bloody Palace mode, Turbo mode, and other quirks that were thrown in really impressed me as a kid and still do as an adult. It's not perfect however, the use of the rank system rears its head in DMC3 similar to 2. It can really hurt a player's sense of accomplishment when they take damage or use items and come out with D's or C's. Fortunately you can replay missions and become more accustomed to the controls and enemy attacks as you do. The difficulty is quite punishing. Even on normal the game can be daunting for new players for their first time through. Hard gets worse, Very Hard goes off the rails and Dante Must Die is insanity to the extreme. If you want a challenging game that demands 110% from your skill level, then this will be your game, but for commoners this will be a deterrent. The styles implemented are good, but the constant need to switch them at statues of divinity is very taxing on patience.

Despite the issues the game has, it is an excellent prequel game that revives the series and punches the lights out of its past entries with stylish demon slaying grace. Match with a industrial rock soundtrack and theme song and you have a wet dream of demon slaying come to life. While it lacks far less of the serious tones the previous 2 games have, at least the ending of 3 still solidifies Dante as the demon hunter fans of the first game have come to know and love. Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition is one of the best games I have ever played despite the issues and is the best prequel game (for me) of all time.

This review is mainly critics both DmC and DMC4 and how DMC3 is able to mix them both well.

DMC3 vs DMC4 - DMC3 has one rule -- to make every command accessible with direction and one press of a button. DMC4 ,however, brings up other commands which require **** timing and tilting the analog stick which is impossible to perform while you constantly moving.
In addition to that, the developers of DMC4 forgot why they made the style system restricted to switch between checkpoints rather on the fly. It's because it would make Dante more complicated to use and break the goal they set out in DMC3. Ever tried to perform a combo while trying to switch between Trickster and Sword-Master ? Yea, it made you perform atleast 2 button combination (switch style on the D-pad and then rest you thumb immediately on the analog to perform the move you want, sounds easy, but it's not.. it battle). I am only scratching the surface of the combat but that's something for another day. The other issue in DMC4, unlike in 3, is the enemy design. It's pure annoying to play against almost any type of enemy (especially those damn Blitz!). TBH, DMC3 has it's fare share of annoying enemy times, but there weren't that many. In-short, DMC4 doesn't want you to just have fun and learn the mechanics of the game... it wants you to freaking MASTER IT'S ASS! It you don't got the skill, screw you, because this game isn't for you... **** you DMC4.
DMC3 delivers great experience for both average and hardcore gamers.

DmC - this game isn't really bad (aside from that story i.e.), but it tries to appeal to much for the casuals. While it does have it's own dedicated evade move (which is shallow in 3 and 4), the combat just isn't as DMC like as it should be. JC is also very easy to pull off unlike in 3 and 4. DMC4 makes JC too hard to pull off, while again DMC3, lets you easily to pull a JC but you're not timing right, you might simply jump on an enemy's head without hitting him.
Another thing that is mediocre about DmC are the bosses, they're way to scripted and don't provide much. Bad... DmC does atleast keep it's fare share of style and vibe and mostly.. accessible for all gamers (unlike DMC4, COUGH* HALF ASS GAME).

    So... DMC3...
    - A great anime story to enjoy.
    - Enemy is fair and isn't too easy and hard to play against
    - Simple and complex in gameplay == the perfect hack and slash game
    - Thus , accessible to all gamers.
    - Provides challenge.

Remember, my fellow gamers. the key to a good hack and slash is the mechanics of the game and well are they implemented.
Cram in too much mechanics doesn't mean you game is automatically better... ahem DMC4.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a game. This is my favourite Devil May Cry game by far and the one I've put the most time into. Devil May Cry 3 does what Devil May Cry 2 should have done. It improves upon almost every aspect of the 1st game. The combat is extremely deep and there are so many different ways you can approach nearly every encounter in this game. All of the weapons feel unique and all have their own uses. The addition of styles also lets you further choose how you play. There are also so many different hidden techniques in this game that add even more depth to the combat. The bosses are for the most part, pretty damn good (Except a certain boss in mission 19). The final boss in this game is now my favourite video game boss of all time. The game handles it's difficulty just like the first game which is great. You start out on normal. If you die 3 times to the same encounter you unlock easy mode. After beating normal you unlock hard (I feel like hard should have been selectable from the start because nothing really changes besides the enemies dealing slightly more damage. I'm told that this is because hard was normal on the original release though). After beating hard you'll unlock very hard where the game gets considerably tougher. Then after beating that you'll unlock Dante Must Die mode where the game becomes absolutely insane! Devil May Cry 3 on Dante Must Die mode is probably one of the hardest games, if not the hardest game I've ever played. If you manage to beat that then you'll unlock Heaven or Hell, but that's more of a joke difficulty and is pretty easy to beat in my opinion. The game also lets you play as Vergil, Dante's brother, after you beat the main story. He's pretty fun to play as but he only has one new cutscene and his missions are the same as Dante's. It didn't really bother me that much though. You will also unlock the bloody palace mode after beating the main story. It's a fun horde based mode that gets progressively harder the more you advance. As for the story and characters. This series has never been known for its story, but surprisingly enough the story is actually pretty good in this game. The characters were also very interesting. Dante is intentionally made super cheesy in this game since it's set when he was a teenager so you're either going to love him or hate him. I think him being this way really adds to the games charm though. One negative about this game though are some of the enemies I feel are pretty badly designed. For the most part, the enemies are fine. Not as interesting as they were in the 1st game, but still fine. However, there are a few enemies that I would straight up remove from the game if I could (F*** The Fallen!). That's really the only issue I have with this game. The camera might annoy some people but I personally didn't mind it. This game holds up brilliantly by today's standards and it's hard to believe it's a 14 year old game now. I highly recommend this game to anyone who likes action games! Expand

Don't want to make angry Toxic DMC fans but true DMC fans know this game is actually saved the franchise. Everything is so good at this Hack N Slash game. Story,Dialogues,Gameplay, graphics and characters.. I remember how many times I finished with Vergil. People must play this game. Glad they did this game Special Edition.

This game has to be the best out of all of them!! The graphics is amazing and the dialogue in the scenes is amazing and hilarious! Dante is my most fav. Char. but Lady at a close second. The games in order may have went from brilliant to lousy to absolutely spectacular, but this is an absolute must have game!!

Devil May Cry 3 plays out to be a very good game, the plot is interesting although all you ever do is fight through the whole game if not solve puzzles as well. The combat controls are great as you can effortlessly chain gun and swords combos for devastating attacks. The graphics are good and the voice ancting and sound are all pretty good as well. The Vergil version that allows you to play as Vergil is not all that great because it is merely you playing through all the same levils as Vegil and not Dante and he (Vegil) does not have as much variability as Dante does so Vergil is kind of dissapointing. The only flaws are that the story seems kind of pathcy but other than that it's good. Overall Devil May Cry 3 is a great game that is definately worth playing for the fun of it. Expand

Better than DMC2, DMC4 and of course DmC, but still only decent compared to DMC1. It can get pretty fun at times if you don't stick to one style or move to play the game but instead find different ways to beat it.

The extras are nice, but the most important feature is the tweaked difficulty level. No more tears while playing! [Oct 2006]

The game's a little easier this time, but playing through with Vergil is a completely different experience.

Far more than a new skin for the same action, playing as Vergil drastically alters the way you approach Devil May Cry. [Feb 2006, p.106]
