  1. Many of you will undoubtedly find Dead to Rights II too unoriginal and repetitive to give a chance, but from my perspective this game is a great rental experience worth checking out on a rainy weekend.
  2. This is not a game that anyone will accuse of vast depth. It revels in action-movie cliches, from Jack’s nearly-constant bad puns (“This ought to heat things up,” he says, grabbing a Molotov cocktail) to the near-invisible story to the waves of idiot cannon-fodder who populate each stage.

Though melee fights and arbitrarily thrust on the gamer and Slate's jerky hand-to-hand fighting techniques often connect when they should miss wildly, there's enough here to give this disc a spin. [July 2005, p.82]

This type of third-person shooters has been done before, and it's been done better. The game may provide a few hours of fun to people looking for a quick fix with no strings attached but it’s difficult to recommend as more than a rental.
  5. So if you like playing video games to release tension, and you don't care about good stories or online multiplayer modes or any of that stuff, definitely rent this one or something.
  6. It's more of an anti-expansion that removes more features than it supplements.
  7. The bottom line is Dead To Rights II tries to make like a summer action blockbuster, but ends up more like that large tub of movie popcorn; too expensive, too short-lived, and ultimately unfulfilling.
  8. 60
Unfortunately, Dead to Rights II maintains its predecessor's graphics and camera glitchiness.

Much like Dante and "Devil May Cry 2," let's hope this is just a sophomore slump, and this series will come back stronger in a future installment. If not, it truly is dead to rights.

What seemed really cool back when Namco first announced the original Dead to Rights -- the sweet disarming animations -- just aren't enough to carry another repetitive action game for more than a few levels.
  11. Linear gameplay, long loads and some crashes did nothing to endear this game to the shooter’s heart.
  12. While the original might have a following, this sequel fails miserably with drab story and pointless combat.
  13. A classic example of a game that isn't any good yet manages to be enjoyably passable for long enough that you might come away with the mildly mistaken impression that it's actually good.

A lesson in what happens when there is an unwillingness to evolve or risk new ideas. [June 2005, p.126]
  15. Dead to Rights II feels like a stripped down, budget version of the first game but at a top-whack price. It's content to retread old ground, which wasn't all that solid to begin with, and fails to bring anything genuinely new to the series. [PSW]
  16. Electronic Gaming Monthly

What we have here is a title that tries hard to impress with its flash, yet stumbles over fundamentally busted gameplay. [June 2005, p.99]
  17. Play Magazine

Takes the action-shooter genre and shoves it straight through the Blanderizer 6235 to ensure any sense of novelty possibly contained therein meets is brutal end. [May 2005, p.50]
  18. A bit of the same old song and dance provided by most shooter games on the market.
  19. Cheat Code Central

The end result is a game that features the 3Ds - less depth, less detail and less difficulty.
  20. 40
All things considered, it's probably a blessing that Dead To Rights II is a short game. Most players will easily nail the coffin shut in a weekend.
  21. Computer Games Magazine

On the easier levels, it's a silly exercise in mashing buttons to spew ammo throughout a world of bad physics, cheap animation, and tinny sound. [June 2005, p.90]

A functional but boring game that attempts to cash in on the violent-game buzz. [July 2005, p.76]

Contrived shooter with little to no depth... This is as generic as they come. [July 2005, p.122]

It's almost as if the developers of Dead to Rights II decided to rip out the fun factor that flowed freely through the original, leaving an empty shell of a frustrating and quite dreadful product.

It’s tempting to go so far as to state that this is the epitome of mainstream, generic console fare, but it doesn’t have playable rap stars or street racing in it, so it doesn’t even merit that.
  26. This is not to say that Dead to Rights is a damned awful game. Its just not a good one and has very little original thought behind it.
  27. If you’re into mindless shooting and action, Dead to Rights II might be a pleasant weekend diversion. However, if you’re looking for a game that improves on the original, delivers an interesting story, varied gameplay, and is worth $50, you need to look elsewhere.
  28. Horrid audio, a cookie-cutter storyline, mediocre graphics and gameplay that gets more and more tired the longer you chug through it all add up to a game that simply does not need to be experienced. Ever.

Huge arsenal of weapons includes rocket launchers, grenades, molotov cocktails, but more importantly a HUGE waste of my time.

I am seriously begging you to not buy this game. Playing it doesn't even make you feel dirty, it literally makes you unclean to the point that dirt has bonded to your skin and you can't scrub it off no matter how hard you try or how many bars of Zest you go through.

We’ve a right to enjoy this kind of brainless, murderous throwback, but we’ve also a right to expect it to be made to the standards of videogames of five years ago, never mind those of today. [July 2005, p.91]
  32. It manages to stumble all over itself from the second you turn it on and never manages to recover. Simple control functions are handled clumsily, changing weapons is a chore and someone actually thought the dumb melee-exclusive levels would be a good idea. Like the rest of this stinker, it is not.

Totalmente. Full Review »

But then it deteriorates into a repetitive chore that ends up overwhelming you so much that you just can't take it anymore. Just run through a bunch of tight corridors and other small areas, kill everything in sight, reach a save/load next area point, rinse and repeat. And that's the whole game. There's literally nothing else, aside from a few cutscenes. You also get SurvivalHorror-level amounts of ammo and health. It all gets pretty frustrating and tiresome. Such a shame. Such a damn shame.
