A bit too dark (as in "no light"), linear and uninventive. It is also strangely entertaining. [Mar. 05]
  2. Fans of the third-person action genre are suited to enjoy this game and will certainly walk away with some level of satisfaction.
  3. One need not be a huge fan of John Constantine, nor even know anything about him or the Hellblazer series to appreciate the experience (though it might make you cool).

Once you get a few levels into the game, you start to see the purpose and role of each weapon, and Constantine encourages you to think strategically about how to take down enemies.
  5. It's a fun and a very stylish third-person action game - a lot better than the movie deserves, by all accounts. Just don't buy it expecting to see anything you haven't already seen before. [PSW]

Strangely compelling. The character, however underdeveloped he might be in this particular interpretation of the fiction, is enough to justify playing through what is otherwise a distinctly mediocre action title.
  7. Falls into the usual pitfalls of not immersing the player in enough to make playing the game worthwhile. This is a rental at best.

Nothing Earth-shattering, but respectable, much like the film. [Apr 2005, p.61]

The unique abilities of Constantine and scary atmosphere that Bits has established will make your mouth water, but you'll be hard-pressed to find anyone who can tolerate the shoddy gameplay. [Apr 2005, p.120]
  10. It might be good enough for fans of the film looking to walk in Constantine's shoes, but if you're simply looking for a good action game, you can do better.
  11. With mediocre sound, graphics and variety, Constantine could make the Devil himself happy to know the torment it will bring to us.
  12. 60
No single aspect will blow you away, but there's enough variety, the puzzles are fun, the controls work well, and you keep moving quickly, so it's a fun ride that's unlikely to bore you unless you try to play through it a second time.
  13. 60
Spell casting is a nice twist but overall this is your usual movie tie-in.
  14. You get the sense that the developers are simply going through the motions and don't didn't bother to offer a refreshing take on the genre.

Replay value is low; better rent before you buy. [May 2005, p.76]

Neither heavenly nor hellish. [May 2005, p.94]

For $19.99 I can see fans of the original source material or the movie losing themselves in that reality for awhile. Until then you're ordered to either rent it or ignore it altogether. Your call.

The problem here is simple laziness. Constantine is a dull, monotonous shooter with few redeeming features, do yourself a favour and buy some of the superb graphic novels instead.
  19. A terrible movie spawns a mediocre-at-best action game that compares poorly with both the motion picture it’s based on and the comic book that inspired them both.
  20. If not for the weak animation, I would say that Constantine looks surprisingly good. Instead, its static appearance cheapens the overall look of the game.
  21. 50
It’s a shame though that the game only lasts for about 4-5 hours though, as Constantine could have been a good 3rd person shooter adventure if done properly.
  22. Edge Magazine

Constantine’s narrative is compelling enough, and some excellent puzzles save it from the ignominy of being yet another average third-person movie tie-in, but only just... Yes it’s uncomplicated, but still an engaging realisation of the source material. [Apr 2005, p.99]
  23. A mix of detailed cut scenes and graphically pleasing levels helps move the adventure along, but cannot cover up what is essentially a derivative and straightforward action game hanging its hopes on a movie licence.
  24. As a movie port using the oldest recipe in the book, Constantine is about as average a game as you can get, which is actually better than most licensed translations. Neither Heaven nor Hell, Constantine is merely a short stay in Purgatory.
  25. There are some rare moments where things are fun, but uninspired boss fights, repetitive corridor crawls and obvious puzzles (water = time to take a trip to Deviland) rob this game of any of the fun the source material could have provided.
  26. 40
The game feels like it was made a few years ago, took few risks, and was just now released. Now it feels dated.
  27. Constantine (the game) is terrible... In the early days of the PS2, Constantine would've been cutting-edge; a fun action romp. But this is 2005, not 2001. We demand that games look, sound, and play better than this.
  28. No joke, I actually fell asleep playing the game, and it was only 3 o’ clock in the afternoon!
  29. The enemies you fight are the definition of repetitive. They are the same type of demon you see in the movie except in seven or eight very subtle variations.

Very linear and repetitive, and zero replayability, but very fun. I still remember many things about this game all these years later, like the final boss. Better than any Max Payne game I've played, thats for sure. Full Review »

The game didn't make me as excited as the movie itself. The gameplay wasn't bad, but the graphics left something to complain about.
